Aside from the power of the Padishah Emperor lies the strength and influence of the noble houses, formally known as the Landsraad. The most politically influential group within this governing body are the Houses Major or Great Houses. They are comprised of nobility which claim a planetary fief or homeworld, acting as both industrial and economic centers for their coffers. At any time, there are around 100 great houses represented in the Landsraad, though this number has historically fluctuated as their number is not fixed. With varying political and economic fortunes, there have been as few as 35 and as many as 157. However, among this conglomeration of dukes, barons, and counts are the exploits of three major houses which both the book and upcoming film focuses.

Apparently Frank Herbert got the name from seeing the name "Harkonnen" in the phone book. He presumed it to be Russian/Soviet. He was looking for a villainous name for the character.
Well, unless he wanted to make stuff up there is not a lot to go on in any way. So honestly this is about as in depth you can go with lore of Dune (if you stick to the main books). The rest of the great houses are just a powerblock relevant to the plot more as an entity than many different characters

What I find a shame is the fact that there are so many channels who cover the general knowledge of Dune, but no one seems to get the idea to actually delve deeper and teach us the lore we do NOT yet know. For example I would be interested in anything but the three main houses since they have been covered over and over.If there are so many other houses (thankyou for that information btw) then please please make a video on that.
In the book the Lansraad is made up of many great houses, but only certain ones are mentioned. Atreides is important because its the only one who can threaten the emperor, currently. partly because he is a popular and just leader, partly because he has the strength and arrakis of course set as a trap, which he takes. -- The houses most often mentioned aside from corrino and harkonnen are moritani and ginaz, which had a war, ginaz formerly trained swords men. If we go an accept the expanded universe of brian herbert's books--which ill understand if one doesnt, Ix is house vernius. Ix in the original frank herbert series is never called a house. The novels dont actually explain many of the other houses but have to do with the bene gesserit, bene tleilax and guild far more. richese is mentioned only as a specialist in miniturization and doesnt figure much into stories. So there just really isnt a ton on them. House ordos is in the gaming universe, which is not canon. House minors include the only one i can mention is the one Rabban is part of, a under house of harkonnen. There is also a place the guild takes defeated houses as sanctuary known only to them. I would just read the books, their appendicies and there is a Dune wiki. you can read the Dune encyclopedia, but this is not canon.
We know about one line about the other great houses like moritani and ginaz, unless you aceppt Brian Herbert's expanded universe books as canon, which many people dont: he makes Ix house vernius, in the original Ix is never mentioned as a great house. The training schools and other entities like Ix, Richese is barely mentioned beyond it is specialized in miniaturization, Bene Gesserit, Guild, Bene Tleilaxu are far more important usually in the books. We also know next to nothing about the houses minor by name: the one the beast rabban is part of, a vassal of the harkonnens is the only one i can think of. There's a special planet? or planets? only the guild can access called Tupile, where defeated ones go, and the Bene Gesserit have a special planet with an extreme environment like Arrakis of their own, mentioned in Chapterhouse or Heretics. Every major house has "family atomics" usually forbidden to use. Interfamily warfare is governed according to the Imperial feudal constitution by rules and known as Kanly or vendetta.
The dune fans tend not to accept the other books that mention them as cannon due to the fact that Frank himself didn’t publish it. It’s a very extremist group of fans. Also a the lack of past mainstream appeal of dune kinda lends to this trend, which seems to be changing as dune takes over Star War’s spot as the favorite syfy franchise.
@@Socialistsflyfree I also preferr Franks work in its pure form, but am still thankful that his son did his best to continue the legacy. As for Dune taking over from Star Wars, that is just a phase which will pass. Eventually a new Sci Fi banger will come along and the Dune hype will dissipate. If there is any reason that Star Wars goes down the drain, then that is all thanks to Disney, but the fundament created by its predecessors and their hardcore fanbase will undoubtedly keep SW alive. Ofcourse Disney will claim this to be their doing, but the more they produce this money printing conveyorbelt garbage, the less valued it will be.
People can only make videos over what is covered in the source materials. Most of the other houses are only mentioned in relation to these three. The information does not exist in canon and any video on the other great houses would be speculation at best.
We have a family name Härkönen in Finland. It sounds about same pronounced. Never thought about the connection.

Herbert literally flipped a phone book in the 60s until he saw Harkonen and thought yeah, that sounds foreign enough. True story.
@@MrAsdasdasdasdasddd Harkonnen (Haakon = son of a noble) thus princes, What Herbert was realy looking for was a synonym for Princepi ( the first rulers of the Imperium Romanum ; the Julian ceasars. A split off from the julians are the Claudians (the house of Alpheus) or as what Herbert came up with, the house of Atreus. The house of Corrino is the descendence of Alexander the great, often depicted as a 2-horned god-son (Corn = Horn). And so on, Herbert constructed his lore based on classic antiqiety.
@@willempasterkamp862 sure, but there's a way simpler explanation above. An Ox is Härkä in Finnish and the Harkonnen family coat of arms happens to be an Ox. It's widely considered to be the canon explanation.

It's honestly really cool the juxtaposition of Lady Jessica and Feyd-Reuth. Both are Harkonens and behave like them, and both show that Harkonen does NOT mean evil, but simply proud and driven. Feyd-Reuth displays some elements of respect and honor for his an Atreides opponent that earned his respect. His pride desires to fight an opponent using his real strength, and even though he won it with a trump card (I mean I don't blame him for not wanting to die), he honored rather than desecrating him after he killed him. There were even remarks of his potential character should he have been raised by another man. Lady Jessica is that 'what if' example.
Why did Lady Jessica choose to have Paul? She never says it outright, probably because she lied even to herself, but it definitely wasn't for Leto's sake. No, SHE wanted to give birth to the Kwisatz Haderach herself, and it's blatantly obvious considering how she raised Paul and her near-delusional hopes for him. Yes, he turned out to be the real deal, but she straight up took a massive risk of ruining a cause she otherwise did believe in, all because her pride wanted herself and not her daughter to raise the Kwisatz Haderach. The Duke wanted an heir, not the Kwisatz Haderach. She didn't even consider Paul's feelings in raising him to become what he was. This is a very Harkonen thing to do.
Paul didn't have enough Harkonen in him to be a proper Kwisatz Haderach. Feyd-Reuth's worst tendencies would have been tempered by a more powerful wife, and the potential son would have been a good and honorable person willing to do terrible things to be the Kwisatz Haderach. So was Paul, but Paul was forced to become what he became, he never wanted to be the Kwisatz Haderach. The potential son would have wanted to be the Kwisatz Haderach for the power alone, their pride would drive them and make them believe that themselves alone were worthy of such great power. They would not need circumstances to motivate them, they would be entirely self-motivated, and while they would certainly be brutally pragmatic, above that they would also be just and honorable.

Funfact, Landsraad in Norwegian and probably other scandinavian languages means council of the land, or council of lands.

Herberts example was the roman senate existing out of roman patrician families (the houses), similar the space guild is based on the jewish sanhedrin existing out of sadducees (priests, star-watchers, navigators).

Not gonna lie, I've never read the books, so I was really hoping you would talk about the great houses not just the main 3 that all other UA-cam videos talk about.
Thing is, there really isn't much information on that, we don't even have a cannon list of great houses in the landsrat.
based on the roman senate, there were a few patrician families (maybe a 100) that controlled the landsrad (assembly), it's very specific to determine each family even for proffessional historians, and Herbert for obvious reasons didn't.
Definitely an interesting tack to take, mixing details from Expanded Dune with the Dune Encyclopedia
I must say this channel deserves more likes and subscribers, you can see the dedication towards making each and single video.

House Fenring is a minor house which is why it didn't make the cut for this video. It however weilds a certain level of power due to its relationship with the imperial house."
The Dune Encyclopedia mentions many more, such as Houses Wikkeiser, Moritani, Fenring, Ordos, Kenric, Wallach, etc.

The Imperium seems to model the Holy Roman Empire quite a bit, though I've never seen this written about as Herbert's inspiration. It's almost like the HRE were active in a mercantilist era which was more capitalistic than it was in our timeline... and controlled most of a galaxy.

I love how each house has a different way of maintaining power and ensuring the loyalty of their people. House Corrino uses brute strength and idealism. House Atreides prefers diplomacy and inspiring legends. And House Harkonnen relies on good old fashioned exploitation and consumerism. All equally effective, all completely distinct
love Dune series but admit I am not interested in the worms the spice etc. But I find the space travel the Great Houses and the politics very interesting.

Paul = Drusus germanicus (pretender, rightfull heir ; James the Just)
Because “Duke” is a title found in English royalty, and one the English-speaking audience would be familiar with and sympathetic to. “Baron” is more central- and Eastern European, and therefore connotes foreign-ness and harshness.

How i would have wished Harkonnen to be the good guys and Atreides the bad guys. I say this because i loooove the name Harkonnen. I don't like their logo though. However, in spite of this, the harkonnens weren't always evil. We can know a great Harkonnen hero in Brian Herbert's and Kevin J. Anderson's The Butlerian Johad. Only Brian Herbert and his father know why they became evil.

What happened to house attrieds/calladan after the massacre on arrakis?
It remains untouched as far as I know, Jessica makes sure the jihad does not reach Caladan, and doesn’t even allow any of Paul’s fedaykin to set foot on it. Since the Atreides empire conquers the known universe during both the jihad and Leto II’s reign, Caladan still belongs to house Atreides

Personal force fields (shields) block bullets in Dune, making melee combat more effective for infantry than handheld guns. Heavy weapons like artillery and explosives are still used, of course
