Jean I love this "awesome 10 min. block" . You are right about problems a beginner would have with it. So my sister suggested me to echo machine stitch the blocks as she helped pulling quilt through the throat & later I knotted it every 3 finger width (4 inches) all over. It was the best idea for me with this queen sized quilt . Best of all I finished it! Thx for this beautiful quilt, I see others in my future only smaller. Peace n luv, Jean

Aw no....how terrible for your suffering!! My son suffers from Fibromyalgia - some days he can't function at all...Just keep it small and easy - don't overwhelm yourself and take many breaks! Remember...this should be fun! Something to look forward to, but if you are daunted, it will get folded up and put away! Small and steady wins the race! Feel better!! :)

A lady said you can take 2 door wedges to hold your door open and put them behind your sewing machine enough to tilt it a little forward which helps you shoulders. I love this quilt. I really enjoy you teaching. Thank you so much

With lots of practice, practice, practice, you CAN do it! I, personally, have never sent out a quilt to be quilted......1 ~ I can't afford to, 2 ~ I couldn't call it all MINE if I did and 3 ~ I would have a hard time giving over creative freedom to a stranger. I know that SO many quilters are comfortable and love their Long-Armers, and I respect that! More power to them! :)
Of course, I love you. ! I was just asking for your professional opinion . Coming here from a professional seamstress for 50 + years. It's planted in our brains wash all fabric before sewing due to shrinkage. If it's for me I know how to wash correctly so it's no big deal. . I was just wandering for the ones your selling . Good to know about 5 Color catchers . I heard of using one but 5 seams more sensible with a big quilt . Thanks for that tip. I make baby doll quilts and was just wondering. I watch hundreds of videos trying to get away from that 5/8th inch seam that's in my brain .!!! Quilting is so much easier. Not trying to get points here but your my favorite ! Your good for the newbies cause your Real .
Oh JO!! You just earned Major Points here!! :) I, too, was a seamstress forever, only having learned to quilt about 12 years ago or so - and that darned 1/4" seam - what's up with that?!?!?! HAHA!!! :) And yes, cotton shrinks, but in a quilt, about 3%, it's all good! I too, give precise info on HOW to wash, i.e., cold water, delicate cycle, mild detergent, no bleach, lay flat to dry and then tumble warm to fluff.
Thanks for sharing your quilting. I think I would mark even my straight lines. long arming is expensive but looks so good. I don’t have the space for one and have only had the patience to quilt baby quilts on my machine. I have made hundreds for Project Linus and local shelters. Not sure about taking on a full/queen on my featherweight. I would rather hand quilt when it’s going to someone who will appreciate the time and effort. Another great video.

Have you ever thought of investing in a long arm quilting machine? I ask because you make he most beautiful quilts and it would cut down on your time. Either way I can't seem to get enough of your videos. By the way, not sure if it is Maxwell who is your video guy but what a marvelous job. 😊
Thank you for watching me! I have THOUGHT about a long arm...but the cost is prohibitive at this time. In my dream world, one would appear and I could churn out more quilts than ever! LOL! But I can Dream!!!! On my earlier videos Maxwell and our son Eliot, were my camera guys...but they got fed up and bought me a tripod and taught me to do it myself! LOL! THanks again!
Do you have a built in walking foot on your machine? If, not, it may be a good idea to use a walking foot attachment for quilting the straiight line quilting. This will help feed the layers of the quilt feeding through without distortion or puckers. For free motion quilting, beginners need to know that they do not use a walking foot, perhaps the darning foot or free motion foot and they have to drop the feed dogs when doing the free motion type quilting. Your finished quilt is beautiful!
Thank you! I have never used my walking foot (for any machines I have) as I feel they are cumbersome and slow - but the majority of quilters love them! Yes, when I'm free motion quilting the feed dogs HAVE to be dropped and a special foot put on - I explain that in detail in one of my previous videos where I am free motion quilting. It's so Beautiful Jean ! Iwanted to know if you wash them before you sell them or just wash the fabric before you make them ? The yellow really makes the colors pop .
Would you think me bad if I say I don't prewash OR wash my quilts after? There are 2 completely different schools of thought about pre-washing - I'm of the 'not bothered'. I like the crisp way my fabric comes from the bolt and when I quilt I am very careful about washing my hands and keeping my area clean so my finished product is still lovely and clean. The other 'side' speak of chemicals, bugs, rat poop, filth, etc., about fabric and then hand oils, dirt from floor, dust, from quilting it, etc.,.......I suppose I am a filthy, buggy, oily person......and interesting that I have sold over 200 quilts and never had a complaint upon the first washing. I DO HOWEVER, ALWAYS ALWAYS include about 5 color catchers (Carbona is best - better than Shout I believe) for the first washing. Do you still like me?!?!? :)
Jean did you stitch in the ditch all the seams first, before free motion quilting? I’m ready to quilt my version of this fantastic quilt top. I consider myself a beginner quilter. Love you and our videos. Thanks
I have practiced and practiced, until I just can't practice any more, and my free motion quilting looks horrible! Looks like a toddler did it. (now, if a toddler HAD one it, it would look fabulous, but not if a 60 year old did it) he he! The stencil might help , right? You make it look So Very Easy! Your quilts are all so beautiful!
You have to get your brain and your fingers/hands on the same page! Steady and not too fast nor not too slow. Shoulders DOWN and perhaps a drink? LOL! But seriously, you will find your shoulders hunched up around your ears if not careful! (I'm right, huh....happened to you! LOL) Let all the energy flow through your hands and fingers..concentrate on that, instead of worrying about it. Sounds all airy-fairy (which I am a lot of the time) but it really does help! Relax and each practice is one more step to enjoying it! :) Remember, this should be fun!
Feed dogs are down, Stitch length to ZERO and if you can adjust your presser foot Pressure to less, that is the ideal setting for Free Motion Quilting. Thank you for liking my quilt Darlene:)
Jean I need some help I am trying to join strips together on the bias. I can't figure out how to join the second piece and keep the seams on the same side does that make since?I am joining 3 pices by the grace I got the last one right but I can't figure out how to get that second piece right. that is another beautiful quile thanks I get so excited when you answer me
Are you talking about the binding strips? If so, put one length to the left of your machine and then one at a 90 degree angle in front of you. Stitch on the diagonal from edge to edge. That way the seam will be spread across the strip and not bunched in one place. Don't know if that's what you mean......:( Hope it is!!!! :
Hi Jean, this weekend I tried to quilt the blanket I'm working on, but my fabric sandwich seemed too thick to move nicely - I adjusted my tension like crazy with no luck. I used the same foot you have here, do you have any suggestions? I went ahead and ordered a walking foot thinking that was my problem. You mentioned putting your shoulder in it, I've not done this step before so do I need to really push the fabric through? any thoughts would be much appreciated, I so enjoy your videos for us newbies :0)
Good for you to try it at home!! I don't know about your tension - mine is automatic. You are just doing a 'straight' stitch , as it were? Then your feed dogs (the bottom 'teeth' ) should be up and should be grabbing your fabric through. You do need to bunch your fabric LOOSELY around the needle, front and back, so the fabric feeds smoothly. I have never used a walking foot so I don't know too much about that. Yes, it does take a bit of muscle to keep all the quilt sandwich where it should be..but the key is loose. Hope this little info helps! Thanks so much for watching me!! :)

Thanks Coleen! You CAN do this!!! :) My machine is set at about 10 stitches per inch, but when I quilt I lengthen them to about 12 - 13 stitches per inch. Thanks again for tuning in! :)
Keep bragging, you deserve it. I only hope I can do this free motion better now. I like your advice on focusing on one small area. I think thats what kept me from working on my quilt tops for so long. Im inspired now. Do you use cotton thread in top and bobbin? Don't know if I missed that part.
You can do it Christine:) Whatever thread I am using, I like to use both in the bobbin. However, I DO like Aurifil thread. It is a bit more expensive, but doesn't generate a lot of lint, which some cottons are prone to do.
This was my Brother VQ3000 which has since been 'retired'. I put over 28 million (yes that is correct) stitches on that machine, and the motherboard is shot. Got my monies worth though! I love my JUKI TL2200 qvp mini (which is a mechanical straight stitch machine), but I also love my computerized JUKI machine, which does fancier stitches. (it is model DX2000qvp)

Hi Jean, this weekend I tried to quilt the blanket I'm working on, but my fabric sandwich seemed too thick to move nicely - I adjusted my tension like crazy with no luck. I used the same foot you have here, do you have any suggestions? I went ahead and ordered a walking foot thinking that was my problem. You mentioned putting your shoulder in it, I've not done this step before so do I need to really push the fabric through? any thoughts would be much appreciated, I so enjoy your videos for us newbies :0)
Good for you to try it at home!! I don't know about your tension - mine is automatic. You are just doing a 'straight' stitch , as it were? Then your feed dogs (the bottom 'teeth' ) should be up and should be grabbing your fabric through. You do need to bunch your fabric LOOSELY around the needle, front and back, so the fabric feeds smoothly. I have never used a walking foot so I don't know too much about that. Yes, it does take a bit of muscle to keep all the quilt sandwich where it should be..but the key is loose. Hope this little info helps! Thanks so much for watching me!! :)

Thanks Coleen! You CAN do this!!! :) My machine is set at about 10 stitches per inch, but when I quilt I lengthen them to about 12 - 13 stitches per inch. Thanks again for tuning in! :)

Keep bragging, you deserve it. I only hope I can do this free motion better now. I like your advice on focusing on one small area. I think thats what kept me from working on my quilt tops for so long. Im inspired now. Do you use cotton thread in top and bobbin? Don't know if I missed that part.
You can do it Christine:) Whatever thread I am using, I like to use both in the bobbin. However, I DO like Aurifil thread. It is a bit more expensive, but doesn't generate a lot of lint, which some cottons are prone to do.
How do your stitches stay locked if you don't tie or back stitch?
They are locked /knotted into place when you put your needle up and down several times in the beginning hole of your stitching line.
Jean, what machine are you using?
This was my Brother VQ3000 which has since been 'retired'. I put over 28 million (yes that is correct) stitches on that machine, and the motherboard is shot. Got my monies worth though! I love my JUKI TL2200 qvp mini (which is a mechanical straight stitch machine), but I also love my computerized JUKI machine, which does fancier stitches. (it is model DX2000qvp)
How do yo determine how much to charge for a quilt ?
I add up the materials and the amount of hours and go from there - usually making just a few dollars an hour, but it pays for my hobby!! :)
