It’s time for another carwow electric car range test!
We’ve got the new Tesla Model 3 Long Range Performance going up against the new entry-level Model 3 Standard Range Plus and the Polestar 2!
All three cars will start with a fully charged battery, and they’re going head-to-head on laps of the M25 in London to see which goes the furthest!
When you just look at the stats, it seems like it’ll be a walk over for the Long Range Performance, given it has a claimed range of 352 miles, compared to the 278 and 292 miles of the Standard Range Plus and Polestar 2 respectively.
But will it play out like that?! Or will their claimed ranges vary wildly in the real world, just like we've seen in our previous EV range tests? There’s only one way to find out… Let’s GO!

Best car ever. If you want to pay luxury car price for a car with quality like a Lada Samara. Except the Lada does not look like a dead fish in the front. And with the Lada you dont have to wait forever for it to charge when on roadtrips. And the battery power in the Tesla slowly dies upon you, year by year it gets worse, decreasing the range. Tesla fanboys only "love it" because they are fools and don´t understand cars. 99.9% are environmentalists who think they can "change the world". Except battery powered cars are not really that great for the environment because it needs huge amounts of metals and the batteries can not be recycled in an easy way today. Also, the electricity needs to be clean for it to be of any benefit at all. Most probably are not, depending on where you live of course

Simple: you DON'T flip through the menus while driving, because those are settings you adjust once, when you first get into the car (including wheel and side mirrors position). Any Model 3 owner will tell you that they quickly decide whether they prefer battery % or miles of range left, and they never again touch that. If you really need to see both, you bring up the Energy screen and leave that on.

I recognize that the performance would increase, but I am always on the verge of getting into trouble the SR+ due to its acceleration and speed as it is. That’s not how a heat pump works Matt! It car does scavenge heat from the battery but a heat pump is like an ac in reverse.
Resistance heaters are 100% efficient as 1w power equals 1w heat. A heat pump is moving energy so 1 w power moves 2-3 w of heat depending on outside temp. I think it also has resistance heaters for when it’s really cold until the battery heats up.

Great insightful review. So the only reason you preferred the polestar was the styling and location of speedometer? Both of which I prefer the tesla(owned a car with a central speedo). The only down side for me would be Tesla service Center reputation, the rangers are great though.

technically, claimed range is always based on a mixed road usage, not 100% highway. Pity that looks and more importantly, internal ergonomics are way too important to put completely aside in favour of only range. At some point, range becomes less relevant.

Would be interesting to see the same test with EV vs Hybrid vs Diesel vs Petrol filling all of them on the same amount of money. Even a couple of each type but from different segments like for example Zoe and Model S vs Yaris Hybrid and Lexus LS500h vs 208 and Audi A6 diesel vs BMW 120i and I don’t know some kind of luxury petrol saloon. Would be interesting to see difference.

Is it true that “Running these cars to zero does long term battery damage”
“Heaters drain battery up to 60 % more in winter”
“Batteries lose about 20% range in cold winter months”
“batteries suffer drain even when not in use and lose about 30% over one or two weeks if not plugged in”

    • @Xenon0000000000001
      @Xenon0000000000001 3 роки тому

If the battery went fully down to zero, it would do damage, but no EV allows you to do that. In this test the cars all still had a few % of battery left, but it just doesn't let you use it to prevent damage. The battery percentage that's displayed in the car is the percentage of usable battery. If never charges all the way to 100% full either.

  • @siraff4461

These last bits around small roads and car parks are a bit pointless. Apart from only adding a few miles you're using regen a lot and not fighting 70mph wind resistance. That 8 miles on the performance would only be a few on a motorway.
The standard range might have done slightly better if the bonnet fitted properly too but I suppose thats to be expected from Tesla.
