Golden OPEN Acrylic is a slow-drying acrylic paint that enables painters to explore techniques traditionally reserved for oil paints. The slow-drying quality gives artists longer working time for easier blending and even subtractive techniques. There is a unique thinner and mediums for use with OPEN, but the paints are compatible with regular fast-drying acrylics and clean up with soap and water like regular acrylics.

Very good, clear, and informative video! It answered my question about the amount of time it takes to dry, and the encouragement to use it over (and with) traditional acrylics!

Nice video, Ken! Would you recommend Open or Regular Golden Acrylics? I'm currently a beginner and painting with liquitex basics, but looking to upgrade. One thing I don't love about acrylics is fast drying time on the palette and the mixes drying out before you get a chance to use them all. For that alone, I'm considering switching to Open. I'm using a wet pallet and it kinda fixes that issue, but to paint gets more and more diluted on water over time, so they tend to get a bit transparent. So, I think I wouldn't mind the Open paints being a little more transparent than normal because I already have to live with watered down paints. On the other hand, almost every serious acrylic painter seems to prefer the regular Heavy Body, so I'm stuck! Thanks

You can meet halfway and buy Golden retarder and mix it with heavy body, slows down drying time but not as much as Open paints

Question: I wanted a slow drying acrylic so that I have more blending time over several hours with portraits. BUT when it does dry to the touch, if I understand you correctly, we still have to wait 3 weeks before adding the next layer of paint over the first layer? That completely defeats the purpose of changing from oils to acrylics it seems? Help?

Nope you can layer them after they dry but they will get reactivated if you are not careful or use hard bristlr brushes. Depends on how thick the layers are. A thin layer should dry enough so you can paint over it as seen if you use a normal gessoed surface. What it means when you need to wait for several weeks to varnish or seal it is because delamination or crackling can occur if the varnish cures faster than the layers beneath. You need to wait for weeks to make sure that before you varnish, the layers are really dry so as to create a separation between the layer or varnish and acrylic so they don't bind too well. This works well when you do conservation and restoration as stripping the old varnish could become a challenge if it binds too well with the paints. That's the logic behind their advise to wait for weeks

His talking speed is fine and the music is lower than his voice. You're just slower than most people.
