This performance was soon after Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated. It felt like the bad guys had won and hope was dying. Yeah, Colonel Tom Parker was just looking for all excuses he can to make sure he has enough dough off the 50% cut he took of Elvis' earnings to feed his stupid gambling addiction, and never really cared about society status once in his entire pathetic life of deceit. Which is why Elvis is very defiant against what Tom Parker wanted and insisted on pushing for this song to come out instead of bowing down to Tom Parker's corporate greedy demands.

Now you're talking, you are seeing the many different sides of Elvis. He sang everything from gospel to opera. Elvis fans have been so protective of him because of the hate laid on this man very hateful rumors. I lived in the 50's I saw what he did for music and his fight to bring black singers to the forefront. the racist 50's white stations wouldn't play black artists, till he changed that. There is a lot to know about his 23 year career. I hope you will do the documentary. "Elvis Presley and the Black Community" the echo will never Die. Thanks for listening.

Elvis had this song composed for him to perform as the finale of his nationwide TV Christmas show on NBC. What made Elvis the greatest is that he could sing anything. You look at a rock and roller and say...."Hey that guy sings R&R so great"....but when you put that same person into a country setting or a blues setting or a gospel setting, you realize that person's limitations. Elvis had no limitations. He sang every genre of music equally well and well enough to say he was "all of the above" in terms of genres. I love music so my taste in music extends in all directions and I have yet to find another artist that could be given a song....ANY SONG and have the ability to sing that song as if that genre of music was his or her specialty.....Elvis was a once in a lifetime talent. There will never be another entertainer to match what he brought to the table.

He is baring his heart, soul, and convictions in a 100% raw, genuine, unpretentious, real Elvis Aron Presley way, believing and transmitting every syllable of the song's message with every fiber and cell of his being. People going on TV and trying to boycott his music and saying he was working with the Devil because of his music which was influenced greatly by hie faith , gospel, Hume’s and The many black influences he had went growing up! He related to black America because they were dirt poor and lived and went to church with many blacks and he saw them as neighbours and friends and did not understand the hate and fear! It broke his heart and contributed to his eventual addictions and slowly giving up !

Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis’s love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination. Just 9 miles away from Graceland (Elvis’s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck, was for them.

Only when viewed from a historical perspective of what was happening in 1968 can you really appreciate how incredibly brave this performance was, especially for someone trying to make a comeback!!! 1968 America was a much different place…one of the great things about America is that we do indeed learn from our mistakes of our past. Like all change, it’s slow and painful…for all of those that think we haven’t made huge steps forward, I invite you to study the 50’s and 60’s!!!
In 2023 we wonder how can a song about loving your fellow man POSSIBLY be a protest song…let me assure you that it was in 1968!

Remember this was his comeback from years away making movies. He was himself worried he had been away from singing too long. And racial tensions were extremely high in 1968, not to mention anti Vietnam protests, Bobby Kennedy was also asassinated...this song was a HUGE risk & his manager advised against it. Elvis had his flaws but the man definitely had guts. RIP Elvis 🙏 You are still remembered & missed!❤

Thx for mentioning Kennedy - he's hardly ever mentioned as part of this.

Well I'm old enough to have lived thru & remember 1968. It has to have been one of the most turbulent years in US history. We have come a long way since then..not all good, not all bad. We need more real leaders teaching the truth & peace rather than all the haters, pot stirrers, & glorified violence. IMHO the media & false leaders gain $ & power from throwing fuel on the hate. Wish we had true leaders like MLK & RK. But Sadly we don't or the haters are drowning them out. I wonder if that's why RK's legacy seems to be fading...just a thought 🤔

Regarding deepthroating the mic, it actually served two purposes. Definitely it comes off as funny but thing is as you've probably started figure out, Elvis and the people in his band and backing choirs tease each other or trick each other or prank each other or startled each other, Etc.
As both a musician and a sound man, I just think it's fantastic that Elvis found a way to not only interact directly with the audience and his own band, but even involves the sound guy in it. And so by doing that, in that brief moment it causes this really sharp feedback which you can hear but to the sound man especially if he's got headphones on, that's going to wake him up and really get him. And so sometimes Elvis did it to even involve the sound guy from a distance and also to make sure that he was just constantly on the top of his toes.

Great reaction. Thanks for elevating Elvis. His passion and emotion while singing this song is genuine. Elvis was super sensitive - he was deeply impacted when he heard that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Elvis's home town of Memphis. Elvis had a preternatural ability to emote in his singing and that comes through in this performance. Hopefully you see how emotionally spent he is at its conclusion. Thanks again!

This was one of my favorite songs. I had this - get ready - cassette lol and I would belt this driving from work at night. It's a nice beat for a night drive and screaming some lyrics where no one can hear you 😂😂😂

As per producer-director Steve Binder's interview, the song also encompassed the assassination of Robert Kennedy + the world's problems @ time. They had the TV on @ time when Robert Kennedy was assassinated after seeing the news of the assassination, Binder & Elvis sat up until 4 a.m. talking everything over w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings -- Binder asked Earl Brown to compose a song based on those discussions & was loosely based on King's speech. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam.

Elvis' people and the special's producer wanted Elvis to close the show with a Christmas song or something lightweight, but he requested a song that was much heavier and pertinent to the times. The song was basically written for him on demand. And surprisingly, it really wasn't the huge hit you might think it would be (peaking at #12). At the time he was working his way back from a number of years of moviemaking and lightweight soundtrack songs. This special kicked off a new, more mature stage in his career and a number of great (superbly produced) recordings followed.

I look into his eyes, feel the expression in his voice, and it always takes me back to that time when I was only a young teen. I have watched this performance many times since the original TV special, and we first got video tape, until now in the YT, and digital age.
I’ve read about it’s inspiration, how and why the song was written. Nothing in all of the commentary, explains more about him, than his humility at the end of this amazing performance. “Thank you, good night.”

The was written for Elvis. Elvis expressed his thoughts to the song writer. This song and performance was put together in about 24 hours. The Colonel insisted Here Comes Santa Claus would closed show but Elvis had no intention to do that.

I was friends with Charlie Hodge his confidant and best friend for years after Elvis died n he told me that when he finished the song n went back stage he cried. Oh yes they first had him wear just the white suit but Elvis wanted to add the red scarf to represent the blood that was shed in assassinations of both MLK N JFK. I love your reactions n ignore the negative comments

Elvis was supposed to sing a Santa Claus song here. He was told not to sing this. He was very passionate about the subject matter. Elvis really believed in equally and bringing people together. Watch Elvis And The Black Community.
