Lets see, not his car. In a different country where you may not know all the traffic laws. Not much experience driving on the opposite side. Yeah, have fun with that.
I've done some preliminary research and it sounds like a pretty damn involved swap. I know an engine wouldn't be difficult to find. Even the kl04 from a Probe/Mx6/626 would be faster than the BP while also making that brilliant sound.
I currently own a 2000 Mazda 626 with the KL-G4 v6 and a 5 speed Love the sound it makes, idle sounds very similar to the idle on the Lantis, but much quieter lol. It's honestly the most fun I've had in such a plain looking car! I've wanted to submit my 626 to RCR for the longest time, but I have difficulty writing about it, I get stuck on "it's a v6, and brown. it's a 5 speed manual, and brown. The motor makes 170 horsebrowns. Have I mentioned the exterior color? It's BROWN"
Everyone I've ever met that owned a v6 mazda 626 1996-2000 or a Lantis v6 or a Cronos has always had positive things to say about the cars except availability of parts.
Love ya Mr. Reg, but we absolutely have roads like these in the USA. I visit once or twice a year from China, and I'm blown away with the back roads that we have to play on. Some have lower speed limits, but I took them for granted when I moved abroad.
When I saw you open the door and looked at the stripped interior, I thought oh no, not another rice box. But then I saw the roll cage and the visible sheet metal where the back seats should be and heard that V6 sing, my jaw dropped.
AnInternetAsshole they take tuners quite seriously in New Zealand, I saw a mint 180z in Auckland with a completely bare interior, save for one racing seat, a fire extinguisher and some gauges, and it was just parked at a trendy restaurant. Like seriously it’s extremely cool as far as car culture goes
Coming back to this video because I bought a MX3 V6 not too long after watching this video and going down the Mazda KV6 rabbit hole. Loving every second of that car too
This whole thing where you want to have fun with the car, but you don't want to bother anyone is so disgustingly relatable. I'm going to need you to stop being me.
I had a 1996 Lantis Type R V6 2L, great car!! Basic setup for back in 2003, it had stainless headers, after market exhaust, changed ignition leads and plugs, removed the back seats and kept it just carpeted. 171hp
Wow I just watched TST video on this car not too long ago and I'm happy to see this guy actually said what he was going to do and turn this thing into a full track car.
The US is a big place to say there are no curvy roads. Go drive in the Boston mountains in northwest Arkansas. You’ll be so tired of driving blind curves.
Canyon roads around California, Mountain roads in the Sierra Nevadas, tail of the dragon, Mount Rainer national park roads, etc. Anywhere there are mountains, are typically going to have fun roads.
It feels so weird seeing this, of course there is highways and interstate’s, if you haven’t been in any 50k-.5k and lower(literally) towns have you even seen America and our roads? The country is so big saying it’s all big straight roads is ridiculous.
There's plenty of nice curvy roads spaced out with straights to let the engine roar before braking for the next corner where I live. Heck, the road I live on is one. Couple of fun corners, a nice bit of straight, and plenty of pock marks in my front yard from idiots going to quick and putting themselves into the grass and rolling.
Kyle Scheffler I haven't been this underwhelmed since I found out singles bars are just a place to get hammered while still being alone and annoyed by the idea of other people enjoying themselves
YES! I’m glad you’ve got to experiance the KF in all it’s glory. Personally I prefer the KL-DE and KL-ZE in Probes and MX-6’s, because it retains that 7,000 rpm redline with a displacement of 2.5 liters instead. From what I recall they’re the same outside size, the KL series are just bored and stroked .5 liters. I would love it if you would review a Probe or something else related to this soon! Thanks.
daffyflyer sadly true, the mx3 weighs perhaps a hundred pounds less than a V6 mx6 or even a 626 sedan. Hard to see where that weight is though. Luckily a V6 swap into a 323 hatch is easier than a B swap into a CRX and can get you down to just over 2000 lbs!
a screaming v6 didn't fit with the classic roadster thing mazda had in mind with the miata. They have very little torque too, not that the BP was a torque monster anyway...
Awesome car, great video as always. I gotta respect you for not getting on it too much but I’d really like to see you drive something at it’s limit in the future. Especially with those wonderful roads.
When I knew you were coming to NZ the V6 323f (Lantis) is the very car I recommended you drive! These things are seriously fun, especially for a fwd sedan! The V6 is so smooth and punchy for it's size and the car has an amazingly well balanced passive rear-steer suspension set up.
Yeah, this has that same weirdo 3 stage manifold. Neat design, and gives it some really good midrange, although supposedly holds it back a bit at the top end.
Let's not forget their larger v6s. The dohc 3.0 je-ze in the 929 sounded magnificent and put out a healthy 200hp. Also had a variable length manifold (variable inertia charging system). Hell, it even had a variable dual outlet muffler that could open and close one of the pipes with a solenoid!
Mazda Lantis was based on the 2nd generation Protégé/Familia/323 platform that we got here from 95-98 and it was sold in Canada for a couple of years apparently..but only with the 1.5/1.8 liter 4-bangers. The MX-3 was based on the 1st generation protégé platform 90-94. KF-ZE is a 2.0 performance V6. We got the K8-DE in the MX-3 and you could easily swap the 2.5 liter KL-ZE into it. The exhaust note was tuned by Porsche on the K-series engines, Mazda made note of that in their car brochure materials from the 90's. I would say it sounds better than the VQ motors but that is subjective.
I bought one of these a week ago, but it has the 1.5L twin cam. Still a ton of fun to drive, although it does have some small issues affecting comfort. And i only paid 530€ or 620 USD, it was inspected a week before buying, timing belt changed at 248k km, it has 260k km on it now.

How I wish you'd check out my collection of F2 engines and Mazda GD chassis cars that no one knows a thing about.
I used to work at mazda when these things where new, (in AU) not as popular as they should have been, got the same engine on a eunos 30x, and the ol' 500. intake noise is amazing, and you can feel the 3 stage intake. I really liked these engines, spent a lot of time fixing the distributor on 'em. thats all I can remember about them.
Apparently mazda did test this in a miata but the installation resulted in oiling problems. the 1.8v6 we got in the 323 had same power as a stock 1.8 mx5 (130bhp) Much easier to turbo or supercharge a BP for way more power they're basically bulletproof.
There are roads very much like this around Sonoma, Napa, and Santa Rosa, basically California's wine country, and are quite enjoyable in sports cars or motorcycles. Highway 35 on the San Francisco Peninsula also qualifies, as does Highway 9. Come to Northern California some time!
That car sounds godly.

Sounds like it makes twice its horsepower
Captain Piratedanger well its still only a 2.0 n/a. 180hp isnt bad for a 2.0. Not Honda vtec values but very good still.
It sounds like an absolute monster. I bet this thing is amazing on the track.
It’s like 60 more than the 1.8L
99Lezard99 Honda's 2.0 makes something like 211.
Of that year, hondas 2.2l made under 200hp
Finally! Some uncut footage of Mr. Regular really giving it some gas! That was so fun to watch. I admire your bravery in someone else's car haha.

My Mazda doesn’t even have the badge
I do too. When my 1996 MX-5 was totaled I made sure to keep it.
Eunos, not Mazda. Albeit it was under Mazda.
@@FranklinSoong No, it is the eternal flame badge. Stock standard Mazda badge from 1992-1998.
The desire to swap a KLZE into my Miata is growing..

Do it. And record good video for the rest of use to see what Mazda SHOULD HAVE MADE.
I'm not the only one subconsciously ducking my head am I?
Just a few weeks after this I had to rebuild the seat mounting, because tall people were just way too close to the roof :P
Subconsciously? I found my self involuntarily ducking haha
As usual with RCR, half of the screen is the roof
Oh his head was legit touching the cage though. The seat position was dumb.
Lapin this one you could tell he was propped a little higher than usual

You should try the MX3 with the 1.8L V6 it's even smaller and lighter and sounds just as good

what an incredible sounding engine
I'm a simple gear head. I see RCR uploads a video, I click.
This has to be one of the best engine sound ever.
The Lantis/323 was my starter car in Gran Turismo 4. Very fun to drive and produced a decent amount of power when fully tuned.
The mazda3 k series is one of my favourite engines to listen to. If the mx-5 ever got one from the factory, it would have been damn near perfect.
