Alex..I love your work ethic and figuring out challenging things…the fireplace will be beautiful when your finished…praying your arm heals quickly…love the shwoos call…
I saw a picture on Pinterest where someone made a mosaic of mirrors on the front of an old fireplace and I immediately thought how cool a mosaic of sea worn pottery would look! 😊
You need waterproof arm sleeves and gloves that you can close tightly areound your forearm. Doing an amazing job with the fireplace! Both of you are fab!
There is a lot to be done, but chip away at one project at a time and before you know it your home will sparkle with beauty and love, You both can do it , take joy in each completed project.
You are really going to appreciate your beautiful fireplace when finished, you sure have worked hard for it and your room renovation. The two of you have been very busy around the homestead, it shows, looking great!
Alex, I'm probably the 100th to say this but go visit a vet, they have gloves they use to IVF cattle that will make your life much much better!!!!! Aa a construction guy my whole life, I am proud of your bravery in renovations!! Been there with the lime burns.
A fine example of hard work and determination, Alex. A good alkalizer is baking soda. That's what you clean up the terminals of batteries with. Next time you want to neutralize the stinging from chemicals or insect stings and bites, use a baking soda and water wash and or poultice. Happy recovery, Dear girl.
Oh my goodness I hope you feel better soon. You should always neutralise the cement burn with vinegar asap as it continues to burn long after the initial contact. I suffered Portland cement burns while laying some large pavers. I wore gloves but they got a small hole in them and it was only when my fingers started stinging that I realised the wet cement had got in. I didn’t have it as wide spread as you but it was painful and I had a spot where the skin turned black. It did heal but months later it would flare up and blister again and again. Funny thing was my husband was working with the cement alongside me and wasn’t even wearing gloves and he didn’t have any reaction at all! But please be careful and wear PPE all the time. Keep vinegar handy whenever using wet cement. BTW I just found your channel and subscribed straight away!! I am watching all your videos from the start because I like your attitude to work, just get in and get it done! We can all learn from that. Hugs from Australia
Im just loving watching you both redo this beautiful home. Alex you are very much like me. Very much self safisant. Mom too.. i love seeing that. Its on my bucket llist to visit Scotland.. i would just love to go there!!
Alex , get yourself a couple pairs of the rubber dish washing gloves and try them when you have to work with the cement. That's what I use when I'm making my yard decorations and my bird baths . They have like thick cloth on the inside & are liquid proof on the outside .
Oh Alex, been there done that with the cement. I remind a small pond with cement a yr ago. Same thing it got into my gloves, oh boy that stings. My dad was a brick layer, builder and I've loved laying bricks and stones my whole life but I've never been in so much pain as I was with the pond. I think because you use yr hands as a trowel the gloves just burn out. Brilliant video as always. Cheers Monika from Australia 😊✌💕
Keep a half a cup of baking soda in a quart of water near you. Baking soda instantly neutralizes the concrete burn.just washing it in water will not stop it from continuing to burn the skin.
Alex your a Champion 🏆❤. I was yelling trying to protect you with the Concrete, it is so caustic to your skin 😮. but you muscled through Amen ❤️. Have no skin contact wet concrete or even the dust bad for your lungs ❤❤❤❤
We installed a log burner in one of our rooms and taking out the old fireplace c1940's, revealed a large deep fireplace which was a bonus. we rebuilt the front brickwork with bricks contemporary to the age of the house -1850's but I also had a time capsule buried into the brickwork, might be worth considering. Years ago builders used to bury some token, as a good luck charm - I did find a clay pipe bowl in the rubble....
Alex, while watching this and noticing your chemical burns from the cement I thought right away that it was caustic and that you should neutralize it with white vinegar. Because I’m not sure what kind of cement you used, I wanted to double check so I looked up some information, and it seems that is the case. However, just in case, I recommend that you look up your type of cement and see if it is indeed caustic, and if so, they have a way to neutralize it and tell you exactly how to proceed with cleaning and using white vinegar or any other pH balanced neutralizers if you don’t have the vinegar. You must do this right away as soon as your skin becomes wet. I hope this helps you in the future please stay safe and take care of yourself. ❤
"Dear, Sweet Girl!" seems to be the main comments being posted on recent videos. You are certainly up against it here, and there is a genuine outpouring of love and support going on. If possible, I would be packing up my tools and heading down to help you. But unfortunately I am on the other side of the world to you, so I'll just have to cheer you on from afar.
