The brass ring or drive band has the rifling marks from the barrel of the original weapon that fired that round. The rifling is the twist inside the barrel that spins the round as it passes through the barrel to give it accuracy and keep it from losing balance and just tumbling. Those rifling marks are the same the police can use to trace a bullet to a certain gun as they are much like a finger print, unique to a certain weapon. Wonderful find and I'm glad you found it "after" it was detonated. 👍
Hi from New York, Always a great video. As some others have said. 'It's nice to see the smiles." My lady friend and I do a lot of the same watching you both. Take care and stay safe.
Gail & Alex- The stream fishermen here attach wool felt pads tot eh bottoms of their boots. They help give traction on the slick rocks. The felt pads also work well on slate, tile, metal, and cedar shingle roofs. I was on a lot of various roofs in my younger years installing antennas , and the old wool socks I wore over my shoes saved me from sliding off many times. The flat piece of metal is a driving band from an artillery shell, not an aerial bomb. The driving band contacts the rifling in the cannon to seal the gasses in, and lakes the shell spin upon firing and makes the shell more accurate. No matter how old a shell, grenade or bomb is, it can still kill you. Men disarming U.S. Civil War cannon shells have had them explode and kill them, and we fought that war from 1860-1866. (Yeah- They say the war ended in 1865 but fighting continued into 1866.). Properly sealed black powder, Torpex, ANFO, TNT, etc, can still be as deadly as when it was made. Many people are still killed every year in France, Belgium, and the battlefields when plowing for planting, and hitting an explosive shell and heaven forbid, a gas shell. It's called the Iron Harvest.
Reminds me of a good old fashioned lark from back in the day . Most enjoyable you do an amazing job and work so hard to give thousands of people something enjoyable to watch . Something different every week x
OMG, where I live, in southern California, it is 112 degrees out. I would love some rainy weather right now! Alex, I didn't know you had two brothers, it's nice to see one of them.
I'm so jealous of your lovely cool weather! It's been around 100 degrees for months now here in Northern California. Be careful while mudlarking, ladies! We want you to be around for many years. ❤❤❤

The fact that you might find something going back a million years (in parts of the island), or to the Middle or maybe even Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Celtic, Saxon, Norman, Viking, and on up all of the historical periods (and those I've missed) almost in any river channel or streambed, or on a beach... it's just amazing. I realize that in Scotland the options are less extensive, but there you have your own set of mind blowing histories to sample. For that matter, where I live just having the prospect of rain the way you do is amazing. In South Texas, USA, we have been having brutal droughts in the summers each year, and the vegetation dies way back every summer. We have been losing big oak trees every year to the droughts, so seeing all of the green in the video is amazing.

My husband had just brought me my morning (well Noonish) tea when your bombastic video popped up. You are so blessed to live in such a remote gorgeous area. The closest I've come to military artifacts is the periscope from a WW II tank someone gave my father when I was a kid. We loved to play w/it outside peering around the house or trees. Now we see, very closely, the Air Force planes that fly over our vacation cabin's property which is in a military flight path. The noise is deafening & they fly so low I always think I should be able to see the pilots faces, but they are too fast. My father was in the US Air Force stationed at the base the planes fly out of. What a very interesting lark this turned out yo be after the wash out at the raging river. Ooo it was a bit of a jolt to the nerves when you found the tail end of the 'bomb'. I remember some of your first videos of digging up a little of your hillside beneath your house. Some of that probably ended up in that stream! Im glad you didn't find a whole bomb, that would have been a stressful day!
This episode reminded me that in 1974 my husband was stationed in Berlin with the USAF. I had taken my new baby in her stroller to the building where we shopped on the base. The area was being excavated for an extension to the shopping area and suddenly we were told to move away from the area. A bomb had been discovered, people around me were saying a terrorist left a bomb. (We were having problems with Arab terrorists at the time). I said well, it’s more likely that it’s a bomb from WWll. Of course that’s what it was! It’s frightening to think that the workers might have set it off .
