Great video! Good tips too for those folk that haven't replaced seals before. And yes, no tool needed! Done that many times, just find something with the same diameter. At some point, maybe I'll pick up the tool set...lol.
@@VikingsGarage most drivetrain seals are pretty similar design too, just different diameters. I remember in my early, early days even using a block of wood across the seal face and a hammer to tap it into place. Plenty of stuff to use if you put your mind to work. I released my first video with the new 4Runner by the way. First half is why I’m ditching Ford, the latter half showing the new ride. We’ve had it about 6 weeks now and getting close to 2K miles already.
Always great info my brother!! Appreciate all the time and hard work you put into these videos that help so many of us out!! Hope the fam is doin great as well brother! God bless you and yours!! Soli Deo Gloria~
Before I bought my "new to me" 2003 4Runner, I was crawling under the car to look for issues. The left rear backing plate looked like it was wet from oil so I figured I needed a new seal sometime. After buying the car, I extended the rear axle vent to a higher location and found out that the original vent was actually frozen closed with all kinds of crud. I installed a new check valve next to the gas filler and that leak on the backing plate actually stopped.
This is actually a very important point. I literally check those vent valves when they come in for service without a question. I could have mentioned it in the video, completely forgot. Nice catch, nonetheless 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@cripplecreekstudios and @efil4kizum I quite frankly don’t watch his channel at all, I got my reasons. So clearly if he published something similar this is clearly a coincidence. Trust me, I wasn’t expecting to be changing that seal. But not much of a choice. I might only have 20k subscribers but other than all the talking, I’m truly trying to show people how to do their own work, therefore saving thousands in the process. 🤷🏼♂️
@@VikingsGarageI believe you are both Toyota Master Diagnostic Technicians. I highly respect both of you and the knowledge you provide and the care you show us DIYers. That Rear diff housing needs a serious decrusting deweathering cleaning painting and roadsalt protecting... I did that on my gen1 tacoma and made it badass looking
Great video. I watched one that disassembled the parking brake and that made me not want to mess with trying to do this. When the seal is going in and it's supposed to be flush with the race, can it be pushed in too far?
You need to have it flush with the outside race, which will be the optimal way. If it bottoms out to the inside race it will still seal perfectly fine.
Looking to see if you have a lower ball joint video. Idk if mine are bad, going to get a professional opinion sooner than later hopefully today. Online Toyota parts seems like the oem is a whole new LCA Assembly.
Hello! I’ve been enjoying your channel for a few years now. I have recently purchased a brand new 23 ORP 5th gen and right away the crank shaft seal was leaking, misdiagnosed twice, it’s now been supposedly fixed. This is now the second Toyota that I’ve purchased new, previous 14 FJ, that’s had thousands in repairs right off the bat. I’d like to share my story?
@@VikingsGarage TY for that info. 280K miles on the 4th gen and haven't had to do anything but maintenance so far. Arizona truck, so no rust probably helps!!
Hi Vikings Garage, I have been watching some of your videos and you seem to have a vast knowledge about the 4Runner. I was wondering if you would be kind to share your opinion or possibly a solution to a problem that seems to be common. I have a 2023 4Runner TRD Offroad Premium that makes a gas pedal vibration/gridding sound(that’s the best I can describe it) when I am driving and it is most pronounced when I am going below 5mph when I turn my wheel about half way and go forward or in reverse. It also happens at 25 Mph or so just not a pronounced. I did put a level on it but it has been doing it since new and people on the forums seem to have the same issue on select 4Runner. The issue has seem to started since COVID. I hope you can help or have experienced this.
@@VikingsGarageI have an update. I have narrowed it down. It seems that it has something to do with the steering. It does it when I am stationary too. I turn the wheel half way and turn it very slightly(like a half and inch) back and forth continually. I can hear a grinding/vibration noise from the gas pedal. Maybe it is the steering column or something?
To give people the option, like I said in the video… “ I didn’t find a can of the correct size while I was doing the job “ Otherwise I would have done exactly that. Though crowd!!

It’s really a fairly easy one to do.

As a new 4Runner owner, I love this channel and yes, i am subscribed. Already did the AC drain from one of your videos!!
🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I’m in the same boat. I did the AC drain mod that Viking recommended and I really like his explanations. Hope I never have to use them though 😂

Very well illustrated, thanks
Thank you!!🙏🏻
Great tip thank you very much. I have a 4Runner. This may come in handy someday.
Hopefully not, bug same exact process.
God bless!!
I used an old canister oil filter to install the rear axle seal on my 4runner. The Toyoya 90915-YZZD3 filter fits perfect.
That is a great tip, thank you for sharing this!
For the money you save DIY'ing this job, spend the $22 for the bearing seal driving kit. As always a great maintenance video - thank you!
I totally agree!
👍🏻
I’m so blessed to be subscribed to you brother this is the exact video I needed thank you!!!
Much appreciated for your support!!

Hi viking what are your thoughts on adding an oil catch can to a 4runner ??
There’s no need for it.
