Laureen, DC did a graphic novel around 2002 -- Batman chased a worldwide child-kidnapping ring all the way to Brazil-After a battle with the leaders, the place caught fire..He got all the kidnapped girls out, but left the slavers trapped inside to burn. And yep, Crane's always been a Psychiatrist since his first appearance in the comics. I loved this movie because it's the only one to really show how much strife and pain Bruce went through to become Batman.

Joker killing Bruce's parents in Batman 1989 was one of the (many) flaws in that movie.
From 1939 to 1989, it was always Joe Chill who killed them. The story changed slightly, from being a random mugging gone bad (like in this movie) to a mob hit (like in Gotham) but it's always been Joe Chill.. Tim Burton made too many small changes to the source material and it's kinda sad that many people think Joker "always" killed Bruce's parents when the only piece of media that tells the story that way is Burton's Batman.

    • @logandarklighter
      @logandarklighter Рік тому +6

Not quite the only - Batman the Animated Series hints - ONLY hints - that Joker might've been his parents murderer. And ONLY because at least in the first season, BTAS was meant to be a spin-off or tie-in to the first two Batman movies. (Most visible in the design of the Penguin).
BUT - they distanced from that idea or let the references fade as Batman and the other DCAU shows went on and Tim Burton left the movie universe of the 90s. By the time the New Batman Adventures in 1997-1999 aired, it's likely that Joker murdering his parents in the DCAU was no longer canon.

The Dark Knight is the most celebrated film in the Dark Knight trilogy, but this movie is every bit as good as its sequel. The more realistic world isn't for every Batman fan, but it stays true to the characters and atmosphere of the comic books for the most part. I saw this in the theatre with my dad when I was a kid, and I remember the two of us, along with the rest of the audience, getting super excited after that end scene with the Joker card
You're definitely going to love The LEGO Batman Movie. It's pretty much BoJack Horseman doing Batman cosplay lmao

Dark Knight is iconic, but Batman Begins will always be my favorite. His character was a shock to Gotham's system, and almost came across as a myth, a spook, or even something out of a horror film. Nolan's grounded take on Batman was a refreshing take, and set the next two films up perfectly.

The random guy, Joe Chill, is the killer of Bruce's parents in ALL Batman media. In Batman 89, there were two guys; the Joker fired the gun but the other guy, identified as Joe Chill in the novelization, grabbed the pearls. Joker's inclusion in the deaths was meant to make the fight between Batman & Joker more personal. Also, Batman in original comics, DID kill criminals, he was originally a Pulp Action Hero before a Superhero, that's why in Batman 89, Batman Returns and Batman Forever, he didn't have a problem putting criminals in positions to die or be killed. He only stopped killing in comics because of the Comics Code Authority. Also, in Batman Begins the novelization, the body of Ra's Al Ghul was not found, implying he survived.

The Batmobile (Tumbler) is in fact an actual vehicle specially built for the movie. There were seven built for the film's production. In Chicago when they were filming they would have several of them parked on Lower Wacker Drive for some of the daytime scenes. Most of the action took place at night when it came to the Batmobile. so you would hear lots of loud explosions and vehicle crashes happening into the wee hours of the morning.

Lifelong Batman fan here who grew up reading the comics! Batman is one of the oldest comic book heroes, the first comic featuring him came out in the 1940's, and over time he has gone through numerous iterations. In the original 1940's comics, he was a dark, brooding, tortured vigilante loner -- as you'd imagine he would be after watching his parents die. Originally, he was the anti-Superman: not a villain, but not the pure and saintly Christ figure that Superman always was. Superman took criminals to jail with a smile and a wave, while Batman savagely beat them up first, then took them to jail with a scowl on his face. As the comics progressed over the decades, he became a little less dark and a little less of a loner, eventually teaming up with Robin and Batgirl. This probably was a reflection of the times; the generation that won World War Two preferred more noble heroes to dark brooding ones. By the 1960's TV series and the 1966 movie starring Adam West, he became campy and lighthearted, and teamed up with Robin in what was basically a comedy series.
By the 1970's, when he joined the "Justice League," the comic book Batman had lost his dark side and became a straight-up good guy hero with a regular personality. But by the 1980s, his popularity plummeted, probably also a reflection of the times -- the 1970s saw Watergate, stagflation, political chaos, etc., so the idea of a noble hero became less appealing.
So, in the late 1980s, DC comics re-booted him as the "Dark Knight" with the idea of taking him back to his roots as a tortured loner. It was in this version that Raas Al Ghul and Lucius Fox were introduced as his mentors -- in the prior versions, they just skipped over his youth and his training and how he acquired his weapons. In this iteration, in one of the most famous comic books ever written, that darker version of the hero actually kills his long-time nemesis the Joker (he locks him in an abandoned concrete underground sewer with no food or water, and walks away). That comic was legendary but also incredibly controversial, so in the Tim Burton version (starring Michael Keaton) and the Christopher Nolan version (the one you just watched), they kept the tortured "Dark Knight" idea but without the murder -- but, as you observed, he comes very close to murder with Raas Al Ghul.
Interestingly, the first 1989 Tim Burton Batman stuck with the tortured loner theme, but by the fourth movie of that series (with George Clooney as Batman and Joel Schumacher as the director), the series weirdly got away from the "Dark Knight" and fell back into the campy comedic 1960's-era Batman, complete with Robin -- which is why most true fans like me pretend that those movies don't exist and were so grateful when Christopher Nolan rebooted it again with his version.
The Joker has always been Batman's main nemesis; from the beginning he was supposed to be a distorted mirror to Batman: a clown-faced joke-cracking villain fighting the dark, brooding vigilante hero in black who rarely talked. But originally, he was not the person who killed Batman's parents; Tim Burton introduced that idea in his 1989 movie as a plot twist.

Great reaction, Laurenn. The three Nolan films are really good, I do agree with you about how Batman reacted to not saving Ra's al Ghul, very out of character.
In the original Batman timeline in the comics, Scarecrow a.k.a. Dr Jonathan Crane was a Psychology teacher, he was mocked by his colleagues, one day whilst teaching he produced a gun in the classroom and said to the class that they know that it can do harm but you don't really fear it until it's fired so, he let it off in the classroom to prove his point, for this he lost his job, unable to get another position he turned to crime using the Scarecrow alias and using his fear compound to make his crimes easy. In the original comics again, Joe Chill killed Bruce Wayne's parents, which was made to look like a hold up, Batman later found out that Chill was employed by crime boss Lou Moxon to kill Thomas Wayne, Bruce's father, because he was going to testify against him in Court. Later on in the comic book 'The Killing Joke' it was changed to Jack Napier who later became The Joker. I hope that this helps explain it.

It's not crap, yes, he has killed in the past particularly in the beginning of his career, then the writers changed the character moved him from New York to Gotham, and made up his no killing rule, the films have played 'fast and loose' with this. He even used guns in his early days, but what I was getting at is how the character was supposed to behave at this time.

Via Comics, Joe Chill (the guy in this movie) is the guy who killed the Waynes. As with pretty much all things Batman, there is about 900 different variations on each backstory - in some versions he's just a hood that was trying to get money for food....in other versions he's a hitman hired by the Falcone family ....and i'm pretty sure there is a version where he's doing the hit for the Court of Owls. With Batman, there's never like a single definitive answer to much of anything, since the stories get retold/rewritten to fit whatever story whatever writer is telling.....but it's always been Joe Chill (except in the 89 Batman, where it's Jack Napier, and on Gotham (Matches Malone) and the Joker movie (where it's just a random clown)

You'll need to rewatch the others to catch more things you might not remember. Especially, in Batman rises, they tie up so many loose ends. It was fascinating why Batman let Raz supposedly die. But, if you go back to the original comics and animations of the Dark Knight, Batman always seemed to be very dark and sometimes really did have to do what was right in order to stop the killlings. It seems unlike him and your right except for those times that his rage, frustrations, and his training showed him how dark people will get. I like that about him! Thanks again...

Great reaction! I'm sad that you've seen The Dark Knight though, since it is my favorite superhero movie of all time and I love seeing other people experience it for the first time. Still, I'm here for any and all Batman reactions!
Happy Holidays to you, Lauren! I hope it's the best holiday it can possibly be!
P.S., two great movies that don't get much attention from reactors are Kuffs (with Christian Slater) and The Abyss (a tense and amazing James Cameron movie). I hope you'll consider reacting to them one day!

    Fantastic reaction Lauren
I went on my first date to Batman 1989 when I was in Grade 7.
I remember my date and I were both very nervous as I spilt our drinks and she split the popcorn. Fortunately the theater was nice enough to replace it all for free.
I was a little disappointed you watched The Dark Knight before
this. Batman Begins provides necessary contexted.
However I'm so glad you watched it now.
I'v watched your channel since the beginning and noticed you are good a picking up on the nuances or reading between the lines when it comes to a characters behavior or situations in scenes.
You don't just take a character behaviors at face value or make assumptions. You seem to pick up on clues. That's a good.
Unfortunately another person recently reacted to The Dark Knight before watching this movie.
It was a mistake for that person because they made several terrible assumptions about Bruce's behavior and other characters because they didn't have the context from Batman Begins or your ability to read between the lines.
This person didn't seem to understand that Bruce's arrogant playboy behavior/Him appearing to show off or bragging about something was simply part of his cover to protect his identity as Batman.

In the comics, Henri Ducard was a French mercenary Bruce Wayne worked with in his early training years. They separated because Bruce disagreed with Ducard's willingness to "get dirty" and kill people. (But in this movie, "Ducard" is just an alias for Ra's al Ghul)

About letting Ras die - as beloved as this movie is, that moment has been a little controversial. The no-killing rule for Batman has never been consistent. He carried a gun in the earliest comics. When comic book violence was cracked down on in the 50s, a lot of things changed for a couple decades. In the comics, though overall, he rarely kills unless there is no other choice for the most part. He definitely wanted to avoid it within his moral code. The Keaton Batman killed a number of people LOL People sometimes forget that until they revisit those. The Affleck Batman used lethal weaponry quite a bit as well. The Batman Animated Series doubled down on the no killing for a number of reasons. This movie series and the new The Batman definitely get closest to Batman's comic book moral code within the live action films. I love Batman (1989), but it's weird revisiting the Keaton movies and realizing how much murder Batman committed in them LOL Back to the original question though, I think him not saving "immortal" Ras was always intended to be used later in some way - his return in the form of his daughter essentially in The Dark Knight Rises, if that makes sense. Sorry for getting long winded LOL

Always a highlight to watch your reaction's, my personal favourites were always the two Tim Burton Batman movies with Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson as Joker was amazing. That trilogy comes pretty close and brought back the Batman hype, especially with the second part. Two of my favourite actors were also in this trilogy Gary Oldman show's how good he is no matter what he does in a movie and the outstanding Michael Caine of course.
The trilogy brought back what Batman lost when Tim Burton left after Batman returns.

One thing that I loved the latest comic lore in Batman, that he actually forgave Joe Chill for killing his parents. He was even visiting Joe when he was dying due to his age, and in his funeral too. That shows the power of forgiveness and how it made Bruce a much bigger and a better man.

Batman's origins have varied over the decades. The basics are mostly the same - young Bruce watches his parents get killed in front of him in an alley. However, some details change depending on the story and who wrote it. In some versions, the Waynes are killed by a mugger named Joe Chill. In other versions, the killer's identity is left unknown and remains a driving mystery in Batman's life. The Joker is only the killer in the '89 Tim Burton movie and virtually in no other Batman media. This is because while Sam Hamm was writing the script, a Hollywood writer's strike was looming. Hamm needed to finish the script in a hurry and had to quickly come up with the killer's identity, ultimately decided to have The Joker be the killer in a rather poetic twist.

Hey Laurenn, before reacting to Batman vs Superman, I highly recommend watching the Zack Snyder universe movies in chronological order for proper context...
    1.) Man of Steel
2.) Batman vs Superman (Ultimate Edition)
    3.) Wonder Woman
    4.) Zack Snyder's Justice League
PS: Make sure you watch BvS - Ultimate Edition as WB forced Snyder to cut the runtime so they could run more showings in the theaters (but that's another story)

It’s still a wonder that Christian Bale went from being severely malnourished in The Machinist to buff in Batman Begins.
The funny thing is he was too bulky to fit in the suit, so he had to lose some weight.

I'm pretty sure it is not canon that the Joker kills Bruce Wayne's parents. That was Tim Burton's own idea, though I did like that twist in the Michael Keaton Batman. It made for a better movie, because you could then draw back on that in the scene where Bruce recognizes Jack Napier as the Joker because of the phrase he uses; "have you ever danced with the devil on the pale moonlight", or something like that.

The BIGGEST plot hole in this movie is that the microwave emitter would vaporize the water in people's bodies too. The microwaves would excite the molecules of all water and not just open or running water. The people around that emitter when it turned on or in the near vicinity would be cooked from the inside out.
