I'm only 23 minutes in, and I perceive you are a great teacher. Thank you! To me, unless I have a teacher, Affinity is a challenge to learn. It's like no other. Open a blank page, with no manual, and begin clicking. 😂 Thank you for this video! My design life just got easier!!!
Hi Julie, I do not have a video on Bevel/Emboss yet. However, I want to create a video on all the FX (which is where the Bevel option is), so stay tuned :)
Sir, you are THE BEST person ever! I'm currently switching from adobe to affinity and you're such a savior..I've been using adobe since 15 years but somehow affinity apps feel very different and I was stuck..till now, thanks!
Been ages since I watched a video from end to end absolutely glued to the screen. As a person with ADHD I get bored easily and skip or forward the video allmost every video or abandon it altogether. Your video I watched without realising time. You sir deserve my sub more than any person I subbed before.
Needed to create a logo for me, and I was having free trial for 6 months, and it's going to end in two weeks, just downloaded the app now. Thanks to you, I have grasped the fundamentals of the app, endless thanks to you.
Excellent tutorial. I took this as an unexpected crash course after leaving Adobe for Affinity. This was just as good as the courses I paid for to learn Illustrator. I think you'll have an influx of new views soon. Thanks!
Thank you for the tutorial! You explained everything very clearly and I really enjoyed learning something new 🙂Will for sure check out more of your videos. Take care!
I wonder how many people googled "how to lock children" 😂 Amazing tutorial, I've learned extremely much from this and I'm gonna repeatedly come back to this video. Really well done!
Thanks for the content. I try to learn and become proficient with at least 1 new major software title each year (CAD, Design, Video, etc.) So this was my first stab at something from Affinity products. Needless to say, I watch a lot of tutorials to help me learn. You are an excellent instructor!
Many thanks for a great tutorial from a 65 year non techy old un! AF2 has been sat looking at me from my desktop as I didn't even understand the basics. Now I'm creating , thank you :)
Wow! You go at a helluva pace! And as I've only opened Designer for the very first time a couple of hours ago, I'm struggling to keep up! ( Being 82 years old might also be a factor!!) But, seriously, you explain everything so well, albeit faster than I'd like, and I'm learning plenty. I'll probably have to watch each section several times to understand everything, but thanks so much for all the time you've invested in making this video. A really great start to my understanding of this programme.
Hi, thanks for watching! Yes, this video is a little bit faster paced, but I added bookmarks so viewers can quickly re-watch parts. In my more recent videos, I try to go a little slower :)
Well I’ll be getting to the newer ones in due course. But I’m really enjoying the first tutorial. I only ‘play’ with editing programmes for fun and as a hobby, although I do do posters and flyers for my bowls club, and create ecards for birthdays etc. Thanks again for your guidance and assistance.
Eye opener! This is the best tutorial I've watched in two years regarding tutorials for designer software. Definitely what I needed and I even now understand how and why vector holds quality and why png etc does not [bonus]. Absolutely brilliant! Heading to purchase this software now that I have confidence to invest and learn from your videos.
@@TechnicallyTrent , so far so bad 😂😂. Typography is something I would like to make my niche, I have wondered through programmes such as Kittl, They're brilliant it does most for you, but they become a dime a dozen and there is no way to manipulate to your own unique style. Could you recommend some beneficial videos for a beginner wanting to focus on typography in Affinity please?
For typography, I just released a video on the Artistic Text tool: ua-cam.com/video/iTqPvYfKNEE/v-deo.html I will be releasing a video on the Frame Text tool in a few days. I focus more on how the tools work than actual typography concepts. But I do want to create a general Typography 101 video about how type can be used with graphic design. Stay tuned!
@@TechnicallyTrent watched this within one hour of release, even my hubby who has absolutely no interest at all commented on how easy anyone can follow along to your tutorials. Getting to know what each tool is capable of is fundamental, I find your video length perfect and not to over whelming.Thank you Trent, keenly waiting for your next release, no pressure or anything 😅
Great, great video about Affinity Designer and all its capabilities and possibilities. The way you explain and the speed of your words are just precise. Thank you!
I've been using SketchUp for 3D-design for a couple of years now, but I really wanted to get into 2D as well. Quickly found out that the controls and workflow of SketchUp and Affinity Designer are extremely similar, but I was still missing some basic knowledge. Was, therefore, looking for a beginner, but fast-paced tutorial and this is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!!
Ok, Trent...I'm at 11:57 in your video, and I have already learned more from you more quickly and efficiently than any other beginning tutorial in 3 years! I know many rudimentary things so I can hack my way around, but you have saved me countless hours learning how to move objects around! Thanks! Now, on to the other 1 hour and 47 minutes! Thank you so much!
Just purchased AD a few days ago and really impressed with the functionality and smooth feeling of it. Your explanations are perfect, clear and concise, no wasted time.
Trent...again thank you for the detailed instructions you provide. You do a good job - that is what I strive to do in the UA-cam tutorials I do for Woodworking and 3D print making on Lasers, CNCs, and 3D printing. One of the things I focus my channel on helping people with is designing projects to use in each of these efforts. In the past my focus has been primarily on using Vectric vCarve or Aspire, and Lightburn software packages. But, as I purchase files I notice some people appear to use things like Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, and other graphics programs for the svg, and other vector files they sell. So this has gotten me more interested in trying to seriously learn Affinity Designer and therefore you see more questions from me in your comments section. Your replies have been helpful and I know how challenging it can be to keep up with comments and provide a thoughtful reply vs. UA-cam's suggested candid response they offer us creators. In show of appreciation for the work you have put in and the fact I am asking some pretty detailed question I want to give you a thanks and will use the thanks button to do so. This may not be the best way to do this but it is quick and heartfelt. OK now that I bribed you a bit, another specific question. One of the things in designing the projects I do is to have accurate measurements with my designs - for example if I am designing a layout for a cribbage boards, I would want the holw vectors to be be 1/8" in diameter and the width of the board and traks, etc. to be specific measurement parameters to allow the svg or dxf file to be imported into the vectric or laser software at the correct size. Do you have a video or series of videos about designing with specific size/dimension parameters and then ensuring my exports remain true to those design parameters? Do you have a website, Patreon, or other way for people to reach out with specific questions?
Hi @RobSandstromDesigns, thanks for your donation, I appreciate it! And best of luck with your channel. Handmade crafting is something that is constantly on my to-do list, especially with resin. I just need to sit down and finally do it. I don't know a lot about lasers, CNC, and 3D printing, but it doesn't surprise me that many people would use common programs like Adobe Illustrator and Affinity Designer. Probably if you can unite those topics (laser/wood with common software), you'll find a dedicated audience. As for your question, typically vectors are designed to be independent of size. My understanding is that when you import them into your tool's software, that is the stage where you specify the actual physical size. To keep things straight in your head when designing, you can specify the size in inches in Affinity Designer when you create a shape. Example: a circle that is 2" in diameter next to a square that is 1". This will allow you to set the relative size of things. However, I don't think the actual physical units of "inches" will be stored with the file when you export it. My guess is that you will need to re-specify the overall size of the design when you import it into your cutting/laser software. Let me know how it goes! As for contacting me, currently UA-cam comments or email (shown on my channel banner) is the best way. Have a great weekend! Trent
Your videos on Affinity Designer are absolutely great. I really enjoy your videos and I discover something new every day. Thank you for your effort and keep it up.
THIS is the Affinity Designer tutorial I've been looking for!!! Superb breakdown and demonstration of the functionality. There was so much to absorb, I will come back to this again and again, and learn something new each time. Deepest Gratitude!!
Now that was a tutorial worth sitting through. I cannot remember something as loaded with good stuff such as this. I'm about to start going through your back catalogue. Thank you !! Aiden
This is an AMAZING tutorial, man. Thanks for such an awesome effort. This is actually letting me get into graphic design, which is something I've always struggled with.
This is amazing thank you. I bought affinity a while ago but was too intimidated on how to begin learning. With all the hype surrounding it at the moment, it has spurred me on to try and learn it and your lesson has made it make a lot of sense.
You truly are a really superb teacher - clear and thorough, anticipating and addressing our potential areas of confusion. And this is such a generous offering. Thank you so much!
Great video! Clear explanations with many good examples in a pleasant pace: not too fast, but not too slow either. Top teacher! Thank you for your time. 👍
Thanks, Great sir. In two days, I finished your course and learnt a lot. Tomorrow I am going to buy Designer on Black Friday. Three days ago, I bought Affinity Photo for for my thumbnail creation. Will follow your several tutorials in future.
Best instruction video I've seen in a long time. Wish I'd seen this a month ago when I started my journey. Would like to see a video that could help importing jpg black and white line art into AD and then how best to create Celtic Knots, from simple Trinity to complex designs. So many options and hard to tell which is the best; pen tool or shapes, when to add or subtract, or when to use Shape Builder or compounds. No one addresses these as they don't involve many of the graphic tools that AD offers. But, still you clarified so much in the crash course.
Thanks for the comment, @jacisiehl5002! Yes, black and white raster lineart provides a particular challenge. One thing you can try is converting it to vector with Creative Fabrica's free tool. The results can be hit or miss, but it is worth a shot: www.creativefabrica.com/features/vectorize-image/ref/2746202/ I show how to use it, along with coloring line art with Vector Fill and raster painting, in this video: ua-cam.com/video/dgrfQd45FJ8/v-deo.html
Thank you so much. I gave up on vector illustration for a while. Coming back and using a whole new software felt like a wall I needed to climb. Thank you so much for being my ladder 😊. The tutorial was amazing and so informative that it's so shocking to me that it's free. Arigatou gozaimasu ❤
Man thank you so much for all the hard work I'm sure went into this. This was the best most comprehensive Affinity tutorial Ive ever taken. I feel like it filled in so many gaps in my knowledge that were bugging me! All the best to you!
This is great, thanks for putting this together. I've known some of this stuff for two decades from photoshop and similar tools, but your straight to the point approach doesn't feel redundant. Keep it up!
Awesome video Trent! You may already know by now, but I have one tip to use for switching back to sharp nodes in the pen tool. Instead of the "hold right click then left click method" you can hold ALT and left click to switch back to the sharp nodes. This way the menu doesn't come up either.
Thank you! Downloaded Affinity design last night. Got up this morning and your video came up when I searched YT. Just watched the entire thing and did the exercises along with you in your video, and subbed, great video, very helpful, and I will be watching your line up. Glad I found your channel right away.
I really enjoyed this. It's not going to make someone a pro in 2 hours but once you're done this, you'll understand any other tutorials you run across to learn techniques. There's a few chapters I'm going to need to watch again to solidify a couple things but I'm definitely feeling more comfortable with the software. I guess next will be some early color theory and figure out how to go about animating these things. Thanks for throwing this out here. It's helped people.
Thank you for this tutorial! I've just finished it after years of laziness. I finally feel at ease and I really feel like I understand a lot of the software!
Thank you so much, I am very grateful for your kindness in sharing this information for free. This makes it so much easier for a newcomer to learn how to operate the seemingly overwhelming software. Much love.
Hi Roxanna, thanks for watching! A Publisher tutorial is on my list of topics, but I'm not sure when I will get to it. But I'd like to do it at some point!
Amazing video. I'm still in the first 30 minutes but it is really entertaining and easy to follow. I doubted about watching it because it's 2 hours long, but I'm finding it far from boring! It is such a good tutorial!
Excellent video tutorial. Way too much for me to absorb at this tie but it gave me an awesome overview and a place to come back to. I have avoided getting into Affinity software suite even though I have had it for many years - learning curve too high for me - but your videos are helping. Now that I am getting into 3D printing and Laser Engraving I am finding the ability to manipulate svgs and images much more important.
The colour picker has also become my favourite tool, I can just simple snap Affinity designer 2 the side of my screen. Have say a web search of images of background images snapped on the other side for inspiration. I can simply go over to my browser window and pick a colour that I like and then use it on the random design I'm working on to get the hang of Affinity designer 2. Loving this very thorough tutorial so far. Learnt alot already.
Yes, I love how pretty much every color UI in Affinity Designer has the color picker. It is very convenient and I find it so frustrating to use other programs that are missing that feature. Thanks for watching!
@@TechnicallyTrent Same here, goes to show the developers have actually used the programme themselves. Oh boy, that's a good point 🤣 copying an image into the program i.e. using paint (since everyone has paint to use as a comparison) using the snipping tool just to extract a colour no longer feels adequate lol. Thanks for making such an indepth tutorial, have shared it with friends and family.
I just came into design thing and tried almost all the popular vector graphic software, and affinity is the best looking interface lol. It's super nice to see, easy and the best, snapping also the best among all popular vector software. It's just that, no bitmap trace. I wish that they make the bitmap tracing that is equal to power trace in coreldraw, because I find it the best bitmap tracing among all vector graphic software. They also need to make the capability of exporting to illustrator file.
Just swapped after 30 Years using Adobe to Affinity Designer & Photo. Fantastic overview and I am only 20 minutes in. +1 Sub. Ok back to watching the rest. ❤
Brilliant tutorial, extremely helpful! Thank you very much for sharing your experience. As others have said, you're an excellent teacher. I was quite unaware of all that Designer could do, as many of the tools remained mysterious even after a few trial-and-error runs.
Not a beginner, just deciding if I want to switch from Adobe to Affinity and super scared that I won't be as comfortable with it. I wanted to get more familiar with the similarities and differences and this video was a great help with that!
Thank you, I’ve never used a programme like this before am looking forward to learning…one thing I would love to do but am having problems with is adding text to a spiral. I have been playing all day with no luck, now to look at your other vids to see if there is anything on one of these.
Hi @corinnecollins, thanks for watching! I have a video for putting text on paths (and circles) here: ua-cam.com/video/u7oHYMoMgTo/v-deo.html I think I made that video before the Spiral tool existed, but the technique will work with Spirals as well. First make a spiral with the Spiral Tool. And then with your spiral selected, select the Artistic Text tool and hover over part of the spiral. You'll see your cursor change to indicate that you can start typing. Hope this helps!

Hi @thomasgabriel1957, thanks so much for your donation! It is much appreciated! - Trent
Hi @andrewhughes459, thanks for the tip!
Thank you very much for a clearly explained, no nonsense video. It has helped me a lot.
Brilliant Video, Easy To Follow, Very Informative. Many thanks for the time you put in to make the video.
No problem, Eric!
Thanks
Thanks so much for the donation!
An extremely concise but thorough and effective crash course for anyone to get up & going - Thank you Trent
No problem, @lookthrumyeyes....glad it was helpful!
Thank you! Downloaded Affinity design last night. Got up this morning and your video came up when I searched YT. Just watched the entire thing and did the exercises along with you in your video, and subbed, great video, very helpful, and I will be watching your line up. Glad I found your channel right away.
Hi @GarrettBM, glad to hear that!
Great video. The walkthrough is amazing!! Thank you!
Such a well made tutorial, you're great!
Thanks @gloups825, I am glad it was helpful!
1:34:27 You can simply tap enter or backspace to add or substract the selected shapes.
Good point, thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much, I am very grateful for your kindness in sharing this information for free. This makes it so much easier for a newcomer to learn how to operate the seemingly overwhelming software. Much love.
Thanks @ethosuniverse, I'm glad it was helpful for you!
Thank you sooooo much for this! By any chance would you ever consider making a tutorial similar to this for Publisher 2, too?
Hi Roxanna, thanks for watching! A Publisher tutorial is on my list of topics, but I'm not sure when I will get to it. But I'd like to do it at some point!
Hands down, thumbs up, lol, the best crash course for Affinity Designer 👍👍
Thanks for watching, @RebelliousX82 !
This course is perfection, Through and thorough.
Amazing tutorial!!! This is the BEST one I've seen to date. You have catered to my learning style completely. THANK YOU!!!!!
Thanks, @motube08 , glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this tutorial. Im gonna check the rest what you have publish.👌
Hi Kevin, glad it was helpful!
Super thorough and helpful! Impressed by the knowledge and clarity, not to mention how direct/succinct everything was. Subscribed!
Thanks @rjacksonartwork189!
Nice tutorial, very helpful! I recently swapped from Adobe to Affinity and your videos made my (designer) life so much easier. Thank you so much!
No problem, @adada1st!
I always appreciate this kind of content. Thanks a lot.
Amazing video. I'm still in the first 30 minutes but it is really entertaining and easy to follow. I doubted about watching it because it's 2 hours long, but I'm finding it far from boring! It is such a good tutorial!
Thanks @jomaix!
This was an incredible crash course, moving from adobe products to affinity and this was exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!!
That's great, @RobSandstromDesigns...I hope it helps with your 3D printing and laser engraving!
I appreciate how thorough your tutorial is. Cheers!!!
Very impressed, I learned a lot!
Just swapped after 30 Years using Adobe to Affinity Designer & Photo. Fantastic overview and I am only 20 minutes in. +1 Sub. Ok back to watching the rest. ❤
This is a very useful tutorial. Thanks for sharing it with us.
My first 30 minutes using Affinity Designer; 😐
I'll adapt using this tool for a few coming weeks.
First 1 hour; Designer 2 generally runs smoother and is more efficient on lower-end hardware.
Trent, this is an incredible tutorial, thank you SO much!
No problem, @TracyCul, glad it was useful!
Always looking out for your content. Thank you for your time.
Wow, what an excellent tutorial video of many features of Affinity Designer 2. Thank you SO much!
Thank you! Very informative.
Brilliant tutorial, extremely helpful! Thank you very much for sharing your experience. As others have said, you're an excellent teacher. I was quite unaware of all that Designer could do, as many of the tools remained mysterious even after a few trial-and-error runs.
Hi @Roquefortraider1, glad it was useful!
Not a beginner, just deciding if I want to switch from Adobe to Affinity and super scared that I won't be as comfortable with it. I wanted to get more familiar with the similarities and differences and this video was a great help with that!
Thanks @rayne_stormzz, glad it was helpful!
Excellent video! I had trouble understanding the Pen Tool and you made easier to understand with how and when to use which mode.
Hi @gh0stransist0r, glad it helped!
Here well before 1 million subs. Great work!
Do you have a tutorial for Affinity Photo 2 ? Really liked this one !
Hi @boumans11, not yet, but I am working on it. Stay tuned!
Wow, what a great video.. Thanks.
Thank you for this extremely valueable tutorial ;)
Thank you, I’ve never used a programme like this before am looking forward to learning…one thing I would love to do but am having problems with is adding text to a spiral. I have been playing all day with no luck, now to look at your other vids to see if there is anything on one of these.
Hi @corinnecollins, thanks for watching!
I have a video for putting text on paths (and circles) here:
ua-cam.com/video/u7oHYMoMgTo/v-deo.html
I think I made that video before the Spiral tool existed, but the technique will work with Spirals as well. First make a spiral with the Spiral Tool. And then with your spiral selected, select the Artistic Text tool and hover over part of the spiral. You'll see your cursor change to indicate that you can start typing. Hope this helps!
Thanks so much perhaps you show a demo on your next live for me x
Sure, I'll answer it on today's live stream :) @@corinnecollins
Thank you so much I’m in the UK and I think your live is at 15.00 my time 🤞🏻
Bedankt
Thanks Huser, I appreciate it!
Thank you for this tutorial! Very helpful!
Thanks for your efforts, it surely helped me understand Affinity features and their uses. 🌟👍
Glad to hear that!
Best tutorial I have seen. Amazing work. Thank you!
Thanks @cpapsales, glad it was useful!
