I dont like how the lines are pixelated as theyre being drawn and then smoothed out afterwards. Is there a way to change this? I just bought affinity designer and this is bothering me a lot
Hey, not sure what you mean to be honest. I don't seem to have that issue. The o ly thing I can think of is that my canvas size is usually pretty big (around 5000px square), so maybe at smaller resolutions lines are rasterized while you draw them? I'm not too sure. Sorry I'm not much more help :/
@@RSKT_art Sorry it is kind of hard to explain but basically it seems like the lines are extremely poor resolution immediately after drawing them but once I lift my pen from the screen the line undergoes some sort of processing which smooths it out and removes the pixelated edges that made it look low in resolution.
@@Josiah_Harder Ahh okay. Are you in the Pixel or Design persona? Vector (smooth) brushes are only avaliable in the Design persona. If your brushes are coming out as pixels, you must be in the pixel persona. You can't access pixel brushes in the design persona and visa versa. So my original rough sketch at the start is using the pixel brush, but then I switch to the design persona and use a vector brush to do the actual linework. Hope that helps you out man :)
@@RSKT_art Youre being exceptionally gracious and patient with me I thank you for that haha the problem might be with my computer or pen maybe then because when I use pixel persona my lines are rendered in full resolution but with high latency behind my pen for the initial part of the stroke until it catches up. But when I switch to the design persona the pen is very fast and responsive but the resolution is low until I lift my pen and it processes the line. This is the case with both the pencil tool and the vector brush tool. If this is abnormal and not something to be changed in settings then it must be a problem on my end haha
@@Josiah_Harder Haha, no worries mate. Yeah that is super weird, I've never had that issue before. Fantastic video with great details on outlines and shading! Very helpful. The one thing I struggled with is the clipping masks and how to draw inside of just the mask. Could you make a video on just this part or share some additional details on clipping masks? Thanks again for a great video!
Yeah the clipping masks can be a bit strange sometimes. You basically want to make sure the clipping mask layer is selected, and when you go to draw on it, you need to draw inside of it. It doesn't always work though so sometimes you just click anywhere to create a pixel layer, and then drag it inside of the clipping mask layer so it's nested inside of it. Hopefully that helps :)

Thank you for the tutorial. How do I put the texture just on the object and not background and things around? I am trying to learn but cannot get past that step!
No problem! You just need to make sure your pixel layer is nested in your clipping mask. If you need a more detailed look at this process, I created a much longer version over on Affinity's main channel. Here's the link to it - ua-cam.com/video/yzaiIP31AqE/v-deo.htmlsi=fm2-IGSc4IQ3IjhV
Thank you for sharing your artwork and talent with us. I have Affinity and the Frankentoon brushes but had no idea what they or any of the other brushes can do. Your work is gorgeous!
Thanks for this video! I dont know why I'm so hard on myself when it comes to shading and highlights. I always stop at basic color and then I hate it because I know I'm not gonna add shading or highlights. Then I just went to not doing color at all. But I decided to try again and I'm actually happy with the results! Thanks again!
Thanks for your videos. For me as a beginner they are very helpful. Why are you using the pencil tool for the base color in a new layer? Wouldn’t it be easier to give a fill color to the existing outlines? Or if you want to separate the lines from the fill, why not copying the outline, setting the fill and switching off the contour? Thank you
No worries! Honestly, it's just the way I do it. Sometimes I'll draw in a lot of detail, but the lines done allllways connect, and if they do and I use the fill option, there are sometimes tiny little inconsistencies in super, high detailed areas. It might have been my computer having issues, and maybe after a few updates it works better now, but I just found it harder to work that way. So I just use the pencil tool instead.
Awesome tutorial. I'm by no means an artist and never sure where to start, but following along, I manage to create something that I never thought I would be capable of. Now just need to take time to learn this programme even more. Thank you for sharing.
Hi, thank you for this tutorial, but I have a question. In time 4:30 you are starting to use brush without the stabiliser and your line looks natural. But even I switch off this setting the line is smoothed automaticaly. Is there something more to set for this? And even you use the stabilizer enabled, you don't have that helper line which following the cursor.
Hey, sorry for the late reply. The stabiliser has a few options that are worth playing with that can help. However, for this tutorial I used a graphics tablet, which is probably why my line looked so natural. The resolution of your document can play a role too (I tend to make mine rather large like 5000px wide). Also, I do have a tutorial on my channel for drawing like this without a tablet, which involves using the stabiliser and a mouse. Hopefully I've helped answer your questions :)
Hi, great tutorial, thank-you! I was wondering if you could tell me why you use a vector brush for the highlights and a clipping mask/pencil tool for the shadows? thanks!
Thanks heaps! You can honestly go about it however you like, this is just the way I prefer to do it. The pencil tool feels really natural to me for drawing in shadows, and using a vector line for the highlights just makes it look kind of embossed :)
Awesome vid mate. I have just one question about when you added the first textured layer. My texture falls outside the colour selection, how do you keep it within the colour layer. I come from using GIMP where you would 'right click', 'select layer', then paint freely with in that space. Only had Affinity Designer for a couple of days. Cheers.
Hey, so it should mask out properly when you draw on the canvas, but sometimes this issue happens for. me too. If it does, drag your new pixel layer onto the vector layer in the layers panel. You want to make sure the pixel layer is nested inside of the vector one. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching :)
Cool video. I just bought some things from Frankenstein like his "Texture Pro 2 for Affinity", "Comic Book Sketch Raster Brushes", "Comic Book Ink Vector Brushes", "Comic Book Templates", "Realistic Charcoal 2 For Procreate", "Paper Block Brush Pack", and finally "Rockstar Kit for Affinity Designer." So I'm good to go for a little while now. I also have about half of the custom stuff that Affinity sells on there website so yea, I have a good collection now. Also I have the whole suite: Photo, Designer, and Publisher.
Super helpful video but I'm not sure if I've missed a trick here - how do you use the texture brush without it spilling over the edge of the clipping mask and onto the artboard? Every time I try to use them they paint outside of the base colour?
Thanks! A few other people seem to have this issue, but don't worry. Make sure the clipping mask is selected in the layers window and the start drawing directly in the shape. It SHOULD work then. If not, just drag the new pixel layer in the layers panel, so that it is nested inside of the vector layer (so underneath it and slightly indented). Everything should behave normally after that. :) Hope this helps.
Hi thanks a lot - but I don´t get how you´re using the pencil after 5:59 - if I am doing this, it colours all over my details and lines. How do you prevent it from doing this? Thanks!
Make sure you're layers are organised and that you are painting inside the clipping mask. If you wind up drawing on top, just drag your new later onto the vector shape in the layers panel, and it should mask it out :)
nice process steps and results... but, what if the outline is not made thick like the original shape which should be enough with just a shadow if needed
Loving these videos, they're helping a ton. The only question I have would be, where do I get the frankentool ink pro brushes? I really like that style of brush, but I can't seem to find them to purchase anywhere. Thanks again for the videos, you've been a massive help in both AD and Procreate!
Thanks so much for saying that! A lot of people ask me this question, so I'm just going to copy and past my answr to it from a previous comment. "Frankentoon has since updated his website to a whole new domain. This brush used to come free in a pack, but it doesn't seem to be available in any of his packs anymore. It's a shame, but honestly, just set up a brush with tapered ends and that's all there is to it. I don't know how many times I've told people this (and I don't think half of them believe me) but you DO NOT NEED this brush to make work like this. You can do this with nearly any brush, just enable pressure sensitivity if you're drawing with a tablet for tapered ends, of manually taper the ends. Inks pro is not the "be all and end all" of brushes, it's just something I find myself using to save time. Please experiment and you will be able to pull this off :)" If you have a look at my "drawing without a graphics tablet" video, there's a section in there about stroke profiles that might help you custom build a vector brush more to your liking. Best of luck! Sorry I can't be of more help.
@@RSKT_art No, that was perfect! I’ve been toiling around their new site the last few days, and I thought maybe I was losing my mind, lol, I wasn’t sure if there was more to it than just the tapered end, but now that I know, I think I’m good. I’m honestly think I’m just becoming a brush hoarder. Thanks again and keep it up! I’ve been loving all of your vids.

Take a week just learning the basics and you will be good, I been using soft soft since it was Fruity Loops back in 03, and still learn
Thanks bro!
Awesome tutorial. I'm by no means an artist and never sure where to start, but following along, I manage to create something that I never thought I would be capable of. Now just need to take time to learn this programme even more. Thank you for sharing.
That's so awesome to hear! Really happy to hear this helped :)
What a great video. Super well explained, thanks! Any video in your channel on how to record yourself with soft soft? I'm under the
Hi, thank you for this tutorial, but I have a question.
So I went into soft soft and tried to intuitively grasp the basic fundantals. And now listening back I feel like I'm one step ahead of Nice tutorialm.
eventually it all snapped into place and I started learning how to add all the effects, titles, motion text. It was pretty cool to see my

@@RSKT_art Thanks!
@RSKT_art cheers mate.
Awesome video! Really interesting to see how other people approach their designs. Learned quite a bit! Thank you!
No problem at all! Thanks for tuning in :)
TNice tutorials was an amazing tutorial. You are a great teacher
Sounds like you're good to go! You'll be able to pull a lot off with that toolset! :)
Awesome video, thank you 🙏🏽
Glad it was helpful!
@@RSKT_art Awesome, cheers dude, much appreciated!
@@joshuastubbings8389 No worries! :)
This tought me quiet a lot. Thank you.
No problem! :)
Yo...I feel tNice tutorials on another level. My heart felt tNice tutorials
Thank you so much 🙏 you really helped me 😊😊😊
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching :)
You can do this however you like! This is just the way I go about it :)
I am very glad that I stumbled upon your video
Happy to hear it! :)

Please experiment and you will be able to pull this off :)"
If you have a look at my "drawing without a graphics tablet" video, there's a section in there about stroke profiles that might help you custom build a vector brush more to your liking.
@@jimmymcgreason haha. Nothing wrong with being a brush hoarder. It's good to have options! Glad you got it sorted :)
@@RSKT_art Hi, I found those inks pro brushes, the creator Enrique replied to an Affinity forum post recently, " I know this thread is kind of old, but just for the record, that Inks Pro pack is a small bonus set we offer with our Advanced Illustration Vol.1 for Affinity eBook."'
Thanks for the tutorial : )
that was so use full! !
Glad to hear it :)
For a second, thought I was losing it. Seems there is no merge feature in this program? Even though they explicitly refer to it on one of their help pages, it isn't there. You have to instead group things? I'm sitting here hitting ctrl+E and nothing happened lol its not listed in the layers menu either.
Your tutorial is the simplest so far and I appreciate the simplicity of it.
Do you mean merging shapes together? Just select each shape and then select the merge icon at the top right of the interface :)
Thank you so much, I’m learning tNice tutorials in quarantine and you made it very simple I really appreciate it, thank you for going over every little
SUPER USEFUL tutorial. I'm making a printout of that reference at the end of the video for reference. Also, I've now decided to buy an iPad.
Thanks! So glad you found it useful :) I think there's a new iPad coming out soon, so you might be able to pick up the current one pretty cheap. I got the 12.9" and honestly couldn't imagine drawing on anything smaller, but a busy of mine has an old standard size and he draws just fine with it. Hopefully you get what suits you :)
