      I’m satisfied, but I do think the 5700G at the very least should have RDNA 2 graphics and I think the 5600G probably should too. I’m not disappointed, it’s still a nice product, but it would be great to have RDNA 2 graphics

      Disappointing compared to what AMD are capable of making.
      I suppose Zen 4 APU generation when they go to 5nm + DDR5 + RDNA2 GPU chiplet + stacked 3D v-cache will finally achieve enough performance for that smooth 1080p gaming.

      Memory bandwidth is an issue even with Vega or Xe. DDR5 is necessary.
      Also, Intel only just recently developed competition with its Xe graphics so AMD had nothing to worry about with its ancient Vega APUs to compete in the laptop segment.

    Ugh I would have loved a half height pcie slot somewhere on this, basically to add something like a networking or RAID card in hba mode.
    With a networking card fast enough to run uncompressed video you could create the ultimate thin client, so you can have a create a crazy server with like a bunch of GPUs and all your (flash) storage and compute power in a different room that doesn't need to be quiet and you can do some very cool stuff on that server as well. Also very nice for live streaming, Ali. And with a hba card you could get one with external busses and or use the expanded version to store your disks externally as a pro tip motherboards don't need a CPU to power up a PCIe card, so you could get a second motherboard, PSU, a raid card with both internal and external ports and store your HDDs super quiet enclosure so you can have a NAS that you can actually place in the living room (and maybe function as sound source)

    You forget that the Steam Deck and XBSS have MUCH faster memory interfaces. The former uses quad channel LPDDR5 @ 5500 MT/s and the latter uses GDDR6 over a 256 bit bus. If they made an RDNA2 APU on AM4, it would be bandwidth starved in many instances.

    Bravo, well said. As a former 3400g owner I'm also tired of AMD pushing Vega APUs for 1080p gaming. It's really not a good option for gaming. There's no reason why AMD couldn't be building an rdna APU in 2021, except to push their graphics cards. This is just my opinion based on my experience with the 3400g and I have nothing against AMD. It's a decent stop gap. My Dad wanted to buy my little brother a 600USD laptop. Instead he gave me the money, I bought a 5600g, 650w PSU, 16GB 3200mhz ram, B550 board and threw it in my old NZXT case. I even used my beefy old air cooler instead of the stock cooler. Once he starts working he can always upgrade and add a dGP and/or a 5600x after selling the 5600g. He has no consoles and an 8 year old laptop that barely runs. He mostly plays Minecraft too. So for his use case I think its perfect.

  • @Dakkidaze
    @Dakkidaze 2 роки тому

    a bit late to the party but here are some tips for people who want to get a similar build:
    0. Decide before buy. The CPU side is crippled(less L3$) so it's NOT as simple as a 5600X and an RX 550 crambled together. You could suffer from 5%-15% gaming performance lost compared to 5600X when you finally get a dGPU and decide to pair it with 5600G.
    1. Get high frequency memory if you can. AMD use Vega cores on these because DDR4 dual channel just can't provide enough bandwidth. DDR4-3600 is around 50GB/s r/w, on a system like this, it would be shared with CPU, while Xbox Series X could get 560GB/s across all those GDDR6(and yes, XSX's CPU use GDDR6 as system memory and share it with its GPU). Zen 3 APUs have pretty good FCLK records so get some 4400 or 4800 kits. DDR5-7200 C36 would have the same latancy as DDR4-3600 C18 but double the bandwidth. This could be enough for some RDNA2 cores but who knows, AMD cancelled the Vega 11 back in the day because there are too many cores and the memory bandwidth is not enough to saturate them.
    2. Do an overclocking on GPU. These Vegas could easily get a 10% oc. Download MSI Afterburner and start from there.

    On the other side, if you are building a pc for 2d art/photo edition, this thing is *perfect*. Just load a good amount of RAM and save hundreds of bucks on the 3d card that wouldn't give you any extra performance at all.

    Hi Ali ! great job on the video as always
    please consider trying to run the build with a B-Die memory and tightening timings... it has absolutely massive impact on performance (up to 30%)
    also these apus can comfortably run at 2200+ FCLK... so its a good idea to retest this build with 4400 cl 18 or lower with tight subtimings.

    • @TechLevelUpOfficial
      @TechLevelUpOfficial 3 роки тому

      okay you know that these APUs are actually meant for budget conscious builders right?!!! at least the 5600G...
      imagine getting an expensive super fast B-Die ram modules just to squeeze some extra bit of performance, that literally defeats the purpose of this whole APU idea. and i am talking about the 5600G because the 5700G is just expensive and literally useless for what it is, it's a decent CPU yes but for 360$ it just doesn't make sense at all, if someone has that money just for a CPU i am sure they can get a 5600X and still afford a 3060 or something like that even with the current situation......

    don't forget that Steam Deck resolution is 12800x800 or something relatively low for display size. it's adequate for mobile format, but not so much (probably) for desktop use when screen size is >20"

    It would be cool to see APU's with RDNA 2 graphics, but I'd still be super stoked to have something of this caliber myself.
    Me and my significant other have been playing a lot of Stardew Valley in our bedroom lately off of her laptop that is using a quite old Intel Iris GPU. Even a graphically simplistic game like this is more than the Intel chip is able to handle once you hop into split-screen, so to be able to replace our janky laptop solution with a super compact little machine like this one, would be really sweet for the type of casual couch-coop games that we play in bed.

    I want Josh from nfc to make a skyreach for the nuc extreme. That would make for the smallest full power boutique case possible. I also wish he would make custom cases and adapters that let you put a laptop gaming board inside a tiny pc case, or a custom aio monitor enclosure that fits a laptop or nuc extreme. Those ideas would be so cool.

    I'd like to know why ITX-motherboards are so frakking expensive? Cheapest X570 ITX-board is 200€, while ATX-variants start from 120€. Cheapest B550 ITX is 120€ while cheapest µATX-variant is 60€. Smaller board requires less components, less wiring etc.
    I have ATX-sized X570-motherboard with 3 M.2 drives (one uses PCIe -> M.2 adapter. It only gets only PCIe 3.0 x2, but it's just enough for Intel 660p drive) + 2xSATA SSD +2xHDD + a PCIe soundcard. This motherboard costs 10% less than cheapest ITX-X570 board.

    I'm sure the fact that desktop APUs are still on Vega is 100% because we're still on DDR4. Even if they could theoretically cram RDNA in an AM4 package for modest performance gains, it probably wouldn't make a lot of sense to spend any R&D resources on it with DDR5 just around the corner. And in fact, Zen parts with DDR5 support will also feature RDNA graphics.
    I'm still getting a 5700G anyway, should be fine until I can get my hands on a real GPU.

    If this APU supported DDR5 for future updates, the VEGA would run better, but i think the limiting factor is the DDR4 bandwidth - RDNA2 in a APU is going to rock and AMD will have a gold mine in their hands if they had released it to the DIY market Now

    My 5600g gets anywhere from 50 to just over 60 fps (depending on how busy things get) at 1080p on low settings (usually hovering around 55 to 60 fps) running doom eternal on Linux, that's with the CPU fixed at 4.4ghz and undervolted to 1.22v, and the iGPU left at stock frequency but the SOC undervolted to 1.07v, using a deepcool gamer storm lucifer k2 cooler in a completely passive system, no fans at all, temps usually sit around the mid to high 60's after gaming for a while, but never seem to go any higher, the older doom appears to use more CPU, so the temps sit around 7 to 10 degrees higher, I'm happy with it, its slightly faster than my old 3600, and slightly faster than my old gt 1030, and cheaper than those two combined.
