Creeque Alley is a really fun song of theirs that’s sort of about their history and name-drops some other folk-pop artists and bands of the era. Xo

Michelle Phillips is singing with Mama Cass & was married to the tall male singer & guitarist, John Phillips. After The Mamas & The Papas she went on to have quite a career as an actress in movies & T.V.

The song is about a relationship that died on a Monday. The singer was with his love in the morning and everything seemed right with the world. By the evening, she was gone.
This is a breakup song. Everything may seem perfect but life shows that it has other plans.

"I Saw Her Again Last Night" is definitely a song by The Mamas and The Papas that you should check out. John Phillips wrote that as a way to get back at Denny after he had an affair with Michelle. I saw another comment suggesting "Creeque Alley" which is a great one about how the group was formed.

I love Creeque Alley! I could be wrong and I should Google it, but I think Michelle is the only surviving member.. her daughter Chynna used to be in a group called Wilson Phillips and she has a youtube channel now called California Preachin (Chynna has long been a Christian and she likes to spread the word). Chynna's father was John Phillips and I'm not going to go into his history.. ya'll can look that up for yourself. Not sure which Cass Elliott song you heard but try "Dream a Little Dream of Me". I was born in 1959, so I remember this music well and that song reminds me of my mom, for some reason. It's a good song. Hope you are enjoying the baby. Take care.

@@connieb4372 You are right that Michelle is the only one left. My granddaughter heard "California Dreaming" on a commercial and asked me who sang the song. So went on UA-cam together so I could show her who was in the band. She looked at them and asked me how old they were now. Ugh...that was not fun to share. And I've got 4 years on ya! Born in '55

J/A, love the Mama’s and Papa’s. Amber, I have a great suggestion for you for female Friday kinda referencing this group. The group to react to is Wilson Phillips, because it’s a combination of the children from this group and The Beach Boys. The lead singer is Chynna Phillips (daughter of Michelle Phillips/Mama and Papas) with the other two singers being the daughters of Brian Wilson from Beach Boys. The songs called Hold On and it’s beautifully sung by the girls. By the way Chynna looks so much like her mother. PLEASE, PLEASE react to this on Friday. Thanks again y’all.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The lead singer, Denny Doherty, had the typical "beatnik" look of the late 50s and early 60s with the goatee and the Caesar haircut. Michelle Phillips was the free spirit of the group, Cass Elliot was the major talent (in my opinion) but the leader of the group was John Phillips. As a matter of fact he was one of the main organizers of the Monterrey Pop Festival which featured Janis and was the reason Cass was in the audience in the video you watched. The festival held in June 1967 was the beginning of "The Summer Of Love" and the beginning of the "hippie" era of the late 60s. Without Monterey Pop, there would have been no "Woodstock" I believe. Songs: "I Saw Her Again Last Night", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon)", "Creeque Alley" (a biographical song about the forming of the group), "Dedicated To The One I Love" (talk about harmonizing, this is it! It also features Michelle as lead singer), and "I Call Your Name".

Nah, Cass was objectively the best. :) John was dismissive of her for a long time and they put her through a lot of good natured and not so good natured hazing and hoop jumping for her just to be thought of as a member of the band.

They all came out of the folk music scene of the early 60's, that is why they could sing and harmonize. I believe it was the 'wrecking crew' who did most of the instrumental work for the studio recordings though. Truly they produced some of the most beautiful pop songs ever recorded. John Phillips was a song-writing genius. I miss them.

She carried a lot of mental health pain from being heavy in the 60s, which is tough from a marginalizing standpoint today, imagine 50 years ago. She was not given the chance she deserved.
