Love your explanation. Also want to add that the Mdiv is primarily for w2 employee pastoral work. Dont need it for entrepreneurial pastoral work. However, the subjects of the mdiv program should still be studied at least at the personal study non schooling level.

There are three kinds of knowledge. One, subjects you know. Two, subjects you know exist, but you don't have a keen, thorough understanding of them. And three, subjects and information that exists but you don't even know they exist. Failure to become educated in any subject...seminary topics or other...results in you not knowing what you don't know. This is inadvisable when presenting yourself as someone knowledgeable about a subject. MDiv is, and will be, the proper path to take if you want to present yourself as an educated pastor. There are no short cuts.

Hello, I'm seeking advice: I'm kind of at a crossroads... I'd like to study the Bible and apologetics on a college level, but there's also another perspective I've encountered, which says that "seminary is not necessary for getting into Bible study and apologetics and in fact, post-secondary studies might even steer me in the wrong direction, because being a Christian is about relationship with Christ, not academia. The letter killeth". What's your take on studying theology in an academic setting versus informally as a personal endeavor?

Knowledge. Just knowing biblical facts does not qualify you to head a church. There is performance of ceremonies such as sacrament and worship. Being able not to just witness but write a concise sermon. How to connect to the community. I have a roommate who prides himself as being an ordained minister after taking an online course he says for 6 months. That is no where near a Baptist minister study in a seminary for at least 2 years or for that matter 7 years required for a Lutheran pastor (4 years regular college then 3 years seminary). There enlies the difference in being able to testify about your relationship with GOD and know a few verses of the Bible and actually being able to run a church. For that I would pick as my go-to person for theological knowledge as the one who went to seminary.
