I’m excited to try to tie these Blowtorches! I’ve always liked to have flies like these in a fly box at the ready. They are great attractor flies with the bright tail and hotspot thread neck. Thanks for creating this how-to video ! Now, while I was on the West Canada Creek a few weeks ago. I used a 2 fly setup and didn’t have much luck until I used an emerger as my upper fly. It really got the trout chasing and hitting that fly. So, maybe you can create a how-to video on tying an Emerger. Thanks again Bryan!
Yeah... great one Jim! There are so many flies hatching in the summer that the trout tend to look up more for them.
Brian this fly is deadly in TN/NC. I really like the lower profile version you have with the dubbing as it make sense for euro nymphing. I always go with peacock hurl and end up a little too bulky. Thank you for sharing this! Keep the solid gold coming!
Peacock herl looks great but they're so delicate that I don't like to use them. The flies fall apart too easily even if you counter wrap the ripping. the dubbing is nice but a little tough to work with.

Enjoyed the video. Really liked the idea of using the loop to put the soft hackle on the fly. I've tied other flies using soft hackle and they got bulky by just wrapping the quill around the hook. i will be trying your loop idea for the soft hackle.
Yup... that is exactly what happens... the dubbing loop is tricky but worth it.

The fly I have on more than any other fly is the sexi stonefly (if there are good stoneflies in the river). Here is that fly in the heavy version. If you want to fish shallower water just tie it lighter. ua-cam.com/video/IepkZymRBdU/v-deo.html

This is an awesome pattern!! A “slight suggestion” that instead of removing your CDC from one side of the stem, you can place them in a stem holder to place the entire CDC feather (with both sides intact) to take your preferred feather length. I’m a very detailed oriented tier and dislike tearing my feather length rather than just putting the perfect length when placing it in my fly.

Interesting fly and great instructions! Having tied much other than steelhead flies but will give this a try. I may opt for the simpler method to attach the cdc as the dubbing loop may be beyond my ability.
It can get a little tricky. Some people will strip on side of the CDC, tie it in by the tip and wrap it a few times.

I'm surprised by how few tiers split the thread as Mark Petitjean does, as opposed to using dubbing loops, especially with small flies using flat thread. It affords less bulk, and is super fast.
Yeah... to be honest I just never split thread....
On the ice dub being so coarse, what I do is pull a little out and pull it apart several times. Like you are trying to blend a couple of dubbing’s together. It makes it a little easier to dub, not perfect but can get it on thread a little tighter. Some will still fall off but not as much
Thanks Mike. There have been a few other suggestions for managing the ice dub as well.. some people are using scissors and cutting it up a bit and there are other brands that are a little finer and easier to work with. I think your method is probably the easiest though. Thanks!
Awesome video. I'd like to see how you know how deep to fish. With a long piece of tippet how do you know the right amount to not get stuck
It definitely depends on the water I'm on and it will vary throughout the day from run to run. I'm using a lot of feel when determining how deep I'm getting and I have to adjust the weight of the flies to get it right many times. I've I'm not touching bottom at all I'm probably too light. If I'm getting hung up every few casts, I'm too heavy. I have to adjust all the time to dial it in for the water I'm fishing.

Another informative video thanks Bryan, keep them coming. My fishing sucess rate seems to be falling with the onset of the summer dog days. Do you have any comments or recommendations for adjustment that should be made as water temperatures rise?
interesting. Lots of variables there. Are the water temps still cool enough? Typically we stop fishing when the temps are above 67 as the fish can have a higher mortality due to lower oxygen levels and more stress from warmth. Are the fish getting pressured by too many anglers? Are they stocked streams where maybe the stockies are being taken or not surviving? In the summer the trout can spread out into shallower waters as long as there is current, oxygen and protection. If oxygen levels become a problem due to warm temps they'll move into pocket water where oxygen is being mixed into the water... again be careful of water temps.
Great video - I love these flies. I am using the same method and tools. I did not know the trick you shared about adding small amount of dubbing before inserting the fibers. I must try. Have you tried tag variation ? I have pink and green in addition to orange. Wondering what they would look like. I also have some black tinsel that could make amazing combos. I need to give this a try and maybe vary a bit the body dubbing in addition to peacok. Maybe using my favorite rainbow dub.
Yeah... there are so many good variations you could try! I've seen people tie then with green instead of orange and I'm sure they work!

To be honest... I fish the size 14 so much that I almost never fish a size 12 😂 But I bet they would do just as well... especially if the stream has some larger flies in it.
I hate to waste material too. And I get the Sulky ribbing ( and a lot of other stuff too) at Joanne’s or Michael’s cheaper then most fly shops.

I’ve had these flies in the box for a long time but no success until last week when they were the only flies the trout would take! Lost my last when in a big trout that broke off so I need to make more using your method. How do you differentiate when you tie flies of different weight so you know which one to use to match the conditions?
My fly box is pretty organized. I have rows of the same flies with heavier flies toward the top and lighter flies toward the bottom. Typically the bead size is going to dictate how much weight is in the fly but I do wrap varying amounts of lead into the flies when tying. If I am ever confused on how heavy a fly is I simply weigh it using this scale. amzn.to/3QMknP0 And then sort my box appropriately.
Great videos. When looking at your web site I noticed that your euro flies seemed to be only offered in one size option. Do you only tie your flies is one size per pattern?
Pretty much.. We have not been able to keep up with fly tying and I've had some family medical issues that took me away from tying for a while. I don't expect to have much inventory on the site for a while.

I had promised myself I would get into jig streamers this year! Even bought specific hooks for it. But I have yet to actually do it (water temps have been to warm for 6 weeks now with no end in sight.. I will make it a mission this fall and tie some jig streamers on the channel this fall\winter!

Hi Bryan love all your videos. I have had a very succesful season this year all on my euro rod. I am in market for hooks, and see saber is a wicked good deal. Looks like very similar to orientsun. ( Same model #) Maybe same factory? What is your experience with the saber hooks? I read reviews about hooks breaking before tippet does. Would you recomend the Saber? 5230 or 5240? Thanks for your input!
I started buying saber hooks because they were local (says Saratoga, NY on the label) and sold locally (FlyShack.com out of Gloversville, NY). I have had no problems with them at all and have landed a ton of fish and plenty of big fish on them. I use the 5230 model and buy them by the 100 pack I think. I've been very happy with them and they have given me no reason to go looking for another hook. And I snag a lot of bottom with my flies and break off 5X tippet by pulling pretty hard... have never had a hook break on me.
Thank you for all of the very informative videos. How are these jig hooks as far as same shape and size as compared to a Hanak H450BL? For example is a Sabor #5230 size 14 the same shape size as a Hanak H450BL 14. I do like Sabor hooks and would buy some but, I just need to know if the two hooks are the same hook for a size #14 in each. What I mean is a size #14 is not alway the same for all hook manufactures. I have used a Sabor #7020 in place of a Mustad 3906. I hope you understand my question.
I do understand your questions but I've never done a side by side comparison of the jig hooks. I use the Saber 5230 pretty much all the time. However, just from looking at pictures, the Hanak H450BL looks to be a wider gap hook more similar to the Saber 5240 (rather than the 5230).

Only taking that rod out does not allow me a fall back fly rod. Thanks again and tight lines. I'm using your leader formula where all parts of the leader are 15lb.

I've noticed that myself too... tying a light tippet onto a small fly is tricky for me these days...
I counter rib the tinsel with 6x tippet on my blowtorches, otherwise the tinsel will start ripping off after a few fish, in my case at least.
Yeah... I know a lot of people do that too. Devin Olsen did in his original tie of this I believe too.
I would like to see how to euronymph with lighter point flies, I have heavy point flies down but when I want to switch to something other than a big heavy stonefly I seem to have difficulty
That is a great idea! Thank you! When you go with less weight in your flies you will certainly rely more on sight than feel. I find that moving to a lighter leader system will help you see the takes more easily when using lighter flies. I'm really loving my lighter leader setup and find I can fish at greater distances with lighter flies and detect strikes easily!
So I have another Euronymph question. You replied to my frustration comment fishing flaming gorge in the wind on another video a week or two ago. Another question I have is how do you battle river moss. Do you go lighter flies and hold ot above the moss. Every river near SLC at the moment is infested with moss and I'm struggling with catching moss, thinking it's a strike 8 out of 10 casts.
Also, is anyone else anxiously awaiting the next video? I do hope it's the fly selection one. This is the only channel I've logged in to YT specifically to see if a new video is online.
I'm so busy with life that my channel takes a back seat a lot of the time (for now). I have so many plans and not enough time to execute on them. I'm working on an announcement video now. Might do a family adventure video that I recorded but I do have the fly selection slated for this fall by the latest! As for the moss... I don't really run into that in my rivers. I imagine I would try fishing higher up in the water column with lighter flies if that were the case.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Thank you as always sir. Totally understandable regarding life vs videos. I meant it more as a compliment. Family is and always should be top priority. I will try higher up and hopefully the fish will come out of the mossy bottoms. The moss is pretty bad in CO, AZ, UT and NM. I am in the 4 corners areas so get to hit all those states within a 4 hour drive. Luckily I have an amazing wife whole wake up and drive with me at 4 AM specifically to hit new and great waters.

Hello! I really hope someone responds here but why is Euronymphing so effective? None of the Euro flies I've seen look like an actual bug like traditional flies. Without getting too much into it I have really been trying to get in to euronymphing. I spent all day at flaming gorge and got 5 fish. 3 on the dry and 2 on euro, but the euros were luck. If I was using my normal methods I feel I would have crushed it. The 15 mph wind didn't help my tightlining. I am just curious because I really struggle with selecting euronymph flies while fishing.
Hi Curtis.. I put together a whole Euro Nymphing Series to help people learn to euro nymph. The series goes into great detail on all aspects. I think if you watch this series it will be pretty eye opening for you. If you have any questions along the way just leave comments as I try to respond to all of the comments on the channel. I'll be releasing a fly selection video in the next few weeks as well but here is my overall opinion on selecting flies. Trout are typically not anywhere near as selective of nymphs as they are of emergers or dry flies. Emergers and dry flies hatch at a very specific time of day and year so trout become selective when feeding on them because only certain flies are actively hatching at a given time.
But flies spend 99% of their life as a nymph living in the rocks at the bottom of the river and so a trout is likely to see a whole variety of nymphs in the river at any given time and are not selective of what they feed on when feeding on nymphs. But his is just one of many points... I would highly recommend checking out the series I linked... I think you'll find it very helpful!

Caught my first decent mountain whitefish tonight on the Euro rod while fishing the Weber in UT, and it all did come together. Tight line to the flies off the cast, felt the take, set the hook. That was fun. I do struggle with deferring a take and the bottom, but I think that comes with experience. One of the reasons I picked up my Clearwater 3 wt 10 foot rod was because of your series. Hopefully I will get the hang of it. Thank you again for the insight and also looking forward to the fly selection video.
You will definitely get the feel of things the more you fish! Not knowing if it is bottom or a fish is VERY common! I'm not sure sometimes which is why I set the hook if I don't know. Sometimes it's a fish. But you'll gain the feel more and more. Now I set the hook on fish and I don't even know what told me to set the hook... it becomes a 6th sense 😂
And I'm sure the wind was making it tough on your trip on Flaming Gorge. Wind makes everything tough!

That ain't a soft hackle. A soft hackle is a wet fly, generally fished with no added weight. This is a nymph. You might want to find out what a soft hackle is. See Sylvester Nemes, T E Pritt, Edmonds and Lee and numerous other resources (Edited to be less harsh)
