  • This is a full tutorial on Devin Olsen’s Improved Blowtorch. Most videos show his older way of tying it, but he has changed a few things. Also, I give some pointers/do’s and don’ts-that not only help you with this bug, but any other fly you tie.

      Good demo fly tiers talk you through the fly and explain techniques that have taken the years to develop. Charlie Craven, Lance Egan, George Daniels, and Kelly Gallop are some of the best not only tiers but teachers.ODTB is good too.

    Great video. Thanks for posting it. I used to tie in CDC by its rachis, but I didn't like the bulk it added. So now I split 18/0 GSP thread and just use the CDC barbs. This *does* look quite like Olsen's Crossover Nymph, as you pointed out to me before. I'll tie some of these up for my annual trip to MT. Luckily I have all the ingredients you listed in your note.

    Thin to win! I'm new to perdigons and I'm guilty of wrapping back and forth to tie in materials. The tip to flatten the thread and make 3 wraps to the front to tie in the wire is a good one. I would have wound all the way up tied it in and wrapped all the way back. Your thread control is terrific. The average tier has no idea about flatting and sharpening the thread. Keep making videos, I enjoy the good ones, unfortunally there are many out there like you said that are using poor thread and material control. Pinching the cdc makes it look more natural than trimming them with scissors.

    Great instruction on this tie..one thing I noticed that you do ..which another Tier explains on another channel ..is you twist your dubbing on your thread clockwise..I notice other tiers twist it on counter clockwise and when they go to wrap it on the hook it always blows out and they find themselves always adjusting their dubbing. If your a right handed tier your thread wants to naturally cord up which would be a clockwise rotation further more tightening your dubbing. Curious on your thoughts.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  3 роки тому

      You are 100 percent correct. As a right handed tier, you have to dub clockwise so the thread cords it up. Your dubbing is going to be locked in and isn’t going anywhere. You will be able to catch multiple fish on one bug without it unraveling, plus when it’s corded up it remains thin. Appreciate the comment!

    I do think you need to build a ramp of sorts with countersunk beads. They tend to have a lot more wiggle than slotted beads, especially when you're at the upper limit of a bead size for a particular size hook, much less oversizing a bead (even by one size). Another reason to go with slotted beads, I guess. Also -- any reason to tie the CDC in with the quill on some flies and do it with a dubbing loop on others? Are the techniques interchangeable in your mind? Thanks again ODTB.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  10 місяців тому +1

      JP-I like to lock in the bead at the end. That way you won’t have too much build up in the beginning that can affect to proportions of the fly. You certainly can do it with oversized, you just need to be aware of it.
      Both ways are interchangeable, but now I do a dubbing loop or split thread almost all of the time. It is easier and I like the look. Also, it is better for smaller flies.

  • @andrewmcgaha9629
    @andrewmcgaha9629 7 місяців тому

    Hey Cory, I'm really trying to learn the why, not just the how. What determines whether you use the quill vs a dubbing loop? I know you usually use a loop.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  7 місяців тому +2

      Andrew, that's a great question. It really boils down to personal preference. I prefer to use a dubbing loop when using CDC (even though in this video I didn't), as it is easy to control the length no matter what size the fly. Plus you can trim them to size.
      When tying a traditional soft hackle, I tie in by the quill, because you can pick a feather to fit the size bug you are tying. This way there will be no need to trim.
      Hope this helps.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  Рік тому +2

      Thank you , Nathan. I actually use a dubbing loop or split thread 90% of the time. I'll use the stem for larger (size 12) flies. This video was one of my first and I was just showing a way that was most popular. A split thread or dubbing loop is easier and more durable. Hope this helps.

      Todd, I ie these in size 16s and 14s. 2.3 beads to 3.5s. In the video, I believe it was a size 14 with a 2.8mm bead. I don't put any wire wraps on my flies. It doesn't add that much extra weight and does add too much bulk.

      Do the first one like ODTB does by tearing the fibers off one side and the wrapping ( little quicker and easier I think) then you can set the fibers aside you stripped off and us a split thread or dubbing loop with them for the next fly. You can also save the fibers you strip off and cut them up to make dubbing! I'm cheap and love to find ways to us all of the materials up.
