This song is so underrated, with a very important and powerful message. If you give too much of yourself to the wrong people, you'll end up giving everything away. It's important to know you should give to yourself too. For you are just as valuable.
This song is just timeless. One of those songs that feels like it's been around forever even though it's not even a decade old yet. Simple and honest melodic perfection.
I'm in Rochford where we tried to save a 150 year old English Oak tree, right outside the gates of two primary schools. the council decided it was worthless because they just want money. 😥 They destroyed it so they could build a 3 lane junction and a massive new housing estate. 😥 This lovely song really gets me now. We are devastated. 😥
Yeah, bored, overplayed and it won't feel that special to you because almost everbody's listening to it and you hear it everywhere. It's better when the song get's kinda old when YOU overplay it and not the radio because you can reach for it again, in the right time and it'll feel kinda new in a way. Dunno, it's just better this way.
Yeah but not as much as many other popular songs...They AT LEAST have 1,000,000... But that's alright....WE concluded that its nice to have a secret song :)
The book "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein is such a sad book, so deep, especially for what's supposed to be a child's book. I read it to my 9 year old daughter and told her the moral of the story is that in a relationship, in ANY relationship, if all you do is give, and all the other person does is take then that's NOT a relationship. smh
The Giving Tree was is my favorite children's book from when I was a kid. Now at 33 years old, it makes me a little emotional. It's such a sad and sweet story.
lyrics - All the leaves on the Giving Tree have fallen No shade to crawl in underneath I've got scars from a pocket knife Where you carved your heart into me If all you wanted was love Why would you use me up Cut me down, build a boat, and sail away When all I wanted to be was your giving tree Settle down, build a home, and make you happy? I lie in the dead of night and I wonder Whose covers you're between And it's sad laying in his bed You feel hollow, so you crawl home back to me If all you wanted was love Why would you use me up Cut me down, build a boat, and sail away When all I wanted to be was your giving tree Settle down, build a home, and make you happy? Well, I see a trail that starts A line of broken hearts behind you That lead you back to me The once sad and lonely fool With nothing left but roots to show, oh If all you wanted was love Why would you use me up Cut me down, build a boat, and sail away When all I wanted to be was your giving tree Settle down, build a home, and make you happy? Settle down, build a home, and make you happy?
I can't believe I just found this now!!!! This was my favorite childhood book!! I shed a tear every time the old man comes back and the tree, who IMO is feeling sad because has nothing left to give, and the boy (now an old man), just wants a place to sit. Such a heart warming book.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein Once there was a tree.... and she loved a little boy. And everyday the boy would come and he would gather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the forest. He would climb up her trunk and swing from her branches and eat apples. And they would play hide-and-go-seek. And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree.... very much. And the tree was happy. But time went by. And the boy grew older. And the tree was often alone. Then one day the boy came to the tree and the tree said, "Come, Boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples and play in my shade and be happy." "I am too big to climb and play" said the boy. "I want to buy things and have fun. I want some money?" "I'm sorry," said the tree, "but I have no money. I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money and you will be happy." And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried them away. And the tree was happy. But the boy stayed away for a long time.... and the tree was sad. And then one day the boy came back and the tree shook with joy and she said, "Come, Boy, climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and be happy." "I am too busy to climb trees," said the boy. "I want a house to keep me warm," he said. "I want a wife and I want children, and so I need a house. Can you give me a house ?" " I have no house," said the tree. "The forest is my house, but you may cut off my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy." And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his house. And the tree was happy. But the boy stayed away for a long time. And when he came back, the tree was so happy she could hardly speak. "Come, Boy," she whispered, "come and play." "I am too old and sad to play," said the boy. "I want a boat that will take me far away from here. Can you give me a boat?" "Cut down my trunk and make a boat," said the tree. "Then you can sail away... and be happy." And so the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat and sailed away. And the tree was happy ... but not really. And after a long time the boy came back again. "I am sorry, Boy," said the tree," but I have nothing left to give you - My apples are gone." "My teeth are too weak for apples," said the boy. "My branches are gone," said the tree. " You cannot swing on them - " "I am too old to swing on branches," said the boy. "My trunk is gone, " said the tree. "You cannot climb - " "I am too tired to climb" said the boy. "I am sorry," sighed the tree. "I wish that I could give you something.... but I have nothing left. I am just an old stump. I am sorry...." "I don't need very much now," said the boy. "just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired." "Well," said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, "well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest." And the boy did. And the tree was happy.

Question: If all you wanted was love, why would you use me up? Answer: "Through the polarity of our consciousness, our valuation and distinction "Here yes, there no", we bisect reality into two halves and are prepared to identify only with that half of reality, only with that half to which we have said yes. Man constantly carries a shadow around with him, and he does not know the shadow. A beautiful song that I've been in love with since before they made the video. The symbolism and amount of depth in this song is breathtaking. Good job guys.
Oh wow. I just learned that a book by this name existed, and when I went to find out more about it, the mere plot synopsis already got me bawling like a baby. Ha ha I´m still deep in tears, this is great...
I'm sorry but how old are you? b/c just about everyone knows that THE GIVING TREE is a real book. either you didn't read it in elementary school or you just don't know the classics of children's books in general or schools now a days don't teach these classics. i was born in 97 and i loved all these classics
Mg Reyes I´m from Brazil; American literature isn´t distributed or ordained as obligational reading worldwide, in case that´s what people normally think =/
Mr.Maia sorry i forgot that it's a worldwide thing i was ignorant to remember that it's from the USA and not the whole world but i think everyone should read the book it's too cute not to read and to see if it's in different languages
This song reminds me my dad for a few reasons. First being the book reminding me when I was a kid and the song has the group bread/ eagles sound to me, both of which my dad listened to when I was young. It is a great song.
I cannot get over how much I love this song ❤️ I heard it on the radio and fell in love with it. The guy said "and that was, giving tree by the plain white t's and I was like OMG I need to see the video! ❤️ Great job! Keep it up, Addy
How did I not know that this song existed. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein had always been my absolute favorite children's book since the day I first heard it. I love the tie ins in the song.
Reading this story now to my baby girl and its such a flash back to this song and that love that cuts. Then I think about how my mom always said she felt like a giving tree growing up. ❤💔
I have been a long time plain white tees fan but somehow i didnt know about this song. It’s now my favorite song by them. I have been listening to it everyday for the past week.
you know that feeling when you talk to a girl, then she just stops talking to you. but you two relate so much. and she meant a lot to you? yeah . this explains it.
I try to listen to it as rarely as possible bcs I know that after a time , if I'll listen too many times ,I won't like it anymore .Bute yeah , I can't help but listening again and again to it
I'm so happy someone else picked up on this! I just heard this song on my way home and was shocked that a beloved book from my childhood was used as inspiration for a pop song! I think this song is great, but it may just be sentiment for playing in the mud and jungle gyms.... oh well. Going on my ipod either way :)
It’s 2024. I just put this song inside a playlist I made for my girl hoping she’ll notice it among other songs and tell me she loves it in particular. She did ❤
One of the best songs that never went "viral" it's one of my favorites

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
Once there was a tree....
and she loved a little boy.
And everyday the boy would come and he would gather her leaves
and make them into crowns
and play king of the forest.
He would climb up her trunk
and swing from her branches
and eat apples.
And they would play hide-and-go-seek. And when he was tired,
he would sleep in her shade.
And the boy loved the tree....
very much.
And the tree was happy.
But time went by.
And the boy grew older.
And the tree was often alone. Then one day the boy came to the tree and the tree said, "Come, Boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples and play in my shade and be happy."
"I am too big to climb and play" said the boy.
"I want to buy things and have fun.
I want some money?"
"I'm sorry," said the tree, "but I have no money.
I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money and you will be happy."
And so the boy climbed up the
tree and gathered her apples
and carried them away.
And the tree was happy.
But the boy stayed away for a long time.... and the tree was sad.
And then one day the boy came back and the tree shook with joy
and she said, "Come, Boy, climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and be happy." "I am too busy to climb trees," said the boy. "I want a house to keep me warm," he said. "I want a wife and I want children,
and so I need a house.
Can you give me a house ?"
" I have no house," said the tree.
"The forest is my house,
but you may cut off
my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy." And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away
to build his house.
And the tree was happy.
But the boy stayed away for a long time. And when he came back,
the tree was so happy
she could hardly speak.
"Come, Boy," she whispered, "come and play."
"I am too old and sad to play,"
said the boy.
"I want a boat that will
take me far away from here.
Can you give me a boat?"
"Cut down my trunk
and make a boat," said the tree. "Then you can sail away...
and be happy."
And so the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat and sailed away. And the tree was happy
... but not really. And after a long time
the boy came back again.
"I am sorry, Boy,"
said the tree," but I have nothing
left to give you -
My apples are gone."
"My teeth are too weak
for apples," said the boy.
"My branches are gone,"
said the tree. " You
cannot swing on them - "
"I am too old to swing
on branches," said the boy.
"My trunk is gone, " said the tree.
"You cannot climb - "
"I am too tired to climb" said the boy.
"I am sorry," sighed the tree.
"I wish that I could give you something.... but I have nothing left.
I am just an old stump.
I am sorry...."
"I don't need very much now," said the boy. "just a quiet place to sit and rest.
I am very tired."
"Well," said the tree, straightening
herself up as much as she could,
"well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest." And the boy did.
And the tree was happy.

One of my all time favorites. Set you in different world of music.
Just heard this for the first time 2020, hits home wish I would have known this was out there a long time ago, it may have saved a life. Very well interpreted.
Someone who can write a song this great is an amazing artist!
I love this song. It speaks to my heart and is exactly what I'm going through.
You're not alone😞
+Nigel Martins =(
Brilliant !
A beautiful song that I've been in love with since before they made the video. The symbolism and amount of depth in this song is breathtaking. Good job guys.
Good grief this song is exactly what I've been going through. Never bawled spontaneously in the middle of a song before but lo and behold, here it is.
we seriously need more songs like this!!!
still here at 2021
Love this song, I can't believe there is no more views!
I've heard this story as a child and I cried for it all the time
This is an amazing song. This band is very underrated.
Love the song. So beautiful. Sad, but so true. Saw your show at the Kentucky a State Fair last week. It was wonderful!
Oh wow. I just learned that a book by this name existed, and when I went to find out more about it, the mere plot synopsis already got me bawling like a baby. Ha ha I´m still deep in tears, this is great...
I know I loved the book so much and then they made this song and I was so happy cause they made it match perfectly!
I'm sorry but how old are you? b/c just about everyone knows that THE GIVING TREE is a real book. either you didn't read it in elementary school or you just don't know the classics of children's books in general or schools now a days don't teach these classics. i was born in 97 and i loved all these classics
Mg Reyes dude calm down, not everyone reads every book in existence and you don't have any right to get on their case just for not reading a kids book
Mg Reyes
I´m from Brazil; American literature isn´t distributed or ordained as obligational reading worldwide, in case that´s what people normally think =/
Mr.Maia sorry i forgot that it's a worldwide thing i was ignorant to remember that it's from the USA and not the whole world but i think everyone should read the book it's too cute not to read and to see if it's in different languages
It's such a wonderful song
its 2019 already wow
This song reminds me my dad for a few reasons. First being the book reminding me when I was a kid and the song has the group bread/ eagles sound to me, both of which my dad listened to when I was young. It is a great song.
I cannot get over how much I love this song ❤️ I heard it on the radio and fell in love with it. The guy said "and that was, giving tree by the plain white t's and I was like OMG I need to see the video! ❤️ Great job!
Keep it up,
Addy
I love this Addy. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.
How did I not know that this song existed. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein had always been my absolute favorite children's book since the day I first heard it. I love the tie ins in the song.
this is me and and my friends favorite song and a few years ago she moved away so when i listen i tear up
Reading this story now to my baby girl and its such a flash back to this song and that love that cuts. Then I think about how my mom always said she felt like a giving tree growing up. ❤💔
This song tears my heart apart..
Whoever wrote this must have been really hurting inside..
Most under-rated/under-appreciated PLTs song. It's so good and emotional and simple.
That little boy is in my kindergarten class this year!
4 years later and I’m still crying over this song :(
IM CRYING 😭 I REMEMBER SEEING THEM IN CONCERT IN 2013 - THEY DID THIS SONG!!! THE MEMORIES

Really deep lyrics
Recently went through a break up, and this song makes sense to want happened.

I saw them in concert and I nearly cried during this song. ;-;

I have been a long time plain white tees fan but somehow i didnt know about this song. It’s now my favorite song by them. I have been listening to it everyday for the past week.
you know that feeling when you talk to a girl, then she just stops talking to you. but you two relate so much. and she meant a lot to you?

I cant stop listening to this
Thank you, Shel Silverstein ♥️ for inspiring this awesome song.
I'm surprised with the ridiculously low view count. I was expecting around 100m.
Aw just like the classic book!
I've lost count of how many times I've listened to this song lol
I try to listen to it as rarely as possible bcs I know that after a time , if I'll listen too many times ,I won't like it anymore .Bute yeah , I can't help but listening again and again to it
Something about this song tears me up. . So beautiful. ❤️❤️❤️love the Plain White Ts
What a nice reference to Shel Silverstein! It's a very nice song.
She did ❤
Why does this not have more views?!?!
I loved this song before, but seeing the video broke my heart. This song is so deep and has so much meaning. Thank you for Making it.
I bet you everyone can relate perfectly to this in some way
This is a great song that I can identify with in every way.
¿Cómo es que esta canción no tiene mínimo 10 millones de visitas?
Just heard them play this on tour last night in Minneapolis. Well done, and can’t believe I had never heard it before!
