What Jeremy wanted was a Z8 by BMW Motorsport. An Alpina's always focused on enhancing comfort. The Z8 is still beautiful
He had already driven the M sport version, when this review was made.
And he disliked it just as much.
...plus he even said that they didn't succeed in making it more comfortable, so...
The Z8 had a V8 engine that was from an M5 so yeah it already was an M car
Alpina version had a V8 from the X5 so won't be as fun as BMWs one

10 years later this car looks always great i find.
that's because who styled it was the person who made the karma fisker. so his unique style was pretty static on most of his design. but just like this car he could of done better.

+lelegume1635 When it was launched, I thought: "OMG! Has BMW suddenly de-learned how to style?" Its younger and smaller sister, the Z4, looked much better. Even the old Z3 looks better to me.

I do care that it's a bad drive, but goddamn i've been in love with it since they first showed it. What a pretty and timeless design!

Nevertheless, it still ramains one of the most beatifull cars ever made.

Because the stig drove it on a wet track I think and that stig was crap.
1 29 for a 570 bhp car is not good at all. The Evo did it in 1 26 and has 300 bhp.
Murcielago was retested in dry conditions and recorded 1:23

Oh, how wrong Clarkson was... 20 years later and Z8s are now worth more than $200k.... with the Alpina versions being even more expensive.
I still think the BMW Z8 a fantastic car. The styling is incredible, you get the V8 engine from the E39 M5 and a six speed manual...

The Z8 could handle like a lorry and I wouldn't care, it's still one of the most beautiful modern cars and one of the few where retro styling was executed properly. Clarkson is really much too harsh on the original, the Z8 was a very competent car, maybe a little too soft for a sports car, but as a GT it was about perfect and the M5 V8 is glorious. Too bad nothing was truly improved in the Alpina version, but that doesn't change the fact that this was more of a hit piece than a fair review.
wristofkings this car is now 20 years old and still looks modern and better than all new cars. I would like to buy one if they would not be so expensive. You pay 200k € for a good one and 400k for a Alpina
Sorry but 95k for that new is shocking. You could've gotten a 350z which handles better, arguably looks better and is similarly paced for 25k. Ok yes the BMW is higher quality in terms of interior and probably engine but 3-4 times as much? No way.

That's funny. I used to work down the street from a BMW dealership. My office faced the corner where they pulled out to start test drives. Every time someone tested the Z8, they would do the exact pendulum swing overcorrected turn Jeremy described. Still, would KILL to own one.

Actually, this was before they retested the Murcielago. The original lap was with an artificially wet track, and when they did it dry, the Lambo pulled a 1:23, which tied it for the lead at that point.

You know, how he compares it to that scania in the beginning, hes totally right. The bmw z8 provides a sense of wonder at every turn and every stop, making you beg for whatever is going to come next :D.
You know, as hard as he tries to bad talk it, notice all the smiling, laughs and fun had in it.
In fact, i think thats what catagory this car was made for. Having senseless fun. And when you combine that with its shotty handling and awful traction, you have fun ass daily driver :D

Ok I watch top gear a lot and I love it, I know that they sometimes use strange metaphors and have their own sense of humor, but saying that the Z8 drives anything like that truck is just stupid. There were so many different things that they could have used if they wanted to but by using the truck, jeremy lost all credibility in his argument. Jeremy, BMW never announced that they would stop making the Z8, it was only meant for a limited run to begin with. The Z8 was one of the best cars ever!
Alpina is great. I drove a B7 once in Germany and it was great..

I was thinking the same ting myself. This was only back around the 2000 mark too, not really very long ago.
You are right about the previous M3 it did have some mistakes , but not alot , the X3 and the 1-Series is not my choice , but the X5 is I`ve driven one and it was fantasticly comfortable and well handled .

@15point51 - new low sulfur diesel is actually pretty great, and the diesel engine's higher compression ratio means it gets more power out of the same amount of fuel. And that's even without factoring in the extra 22,000 BTUs per gallon in diesel fuel. But diesel engines generally only have a few thousand revs, and then you have to shift - so IMO, they're not as fun. And the cast iron engines are rather heavy. But the massive amount of torque is rather fun, especially in the industrial world.
At 04:30, there is a quite nice version of Fleetwood Mac's Albatross, but does anyone know what veriant it is?

I'd still take one. It just looks so good. It looks like the way they used to make cars. New cars really look like they are designed on computers. They look bulky. This looks like it was designed on paper by someone with talent AND experience. And nobody call me old either, I'm 25.

Wer annähernd das Gefühl möchte und dennoch einen Sportlichen BMW Roadster mit Wertsteigerung will den empfehle ich einen Z3 M oder 3.0 (alltagstauglicher).
Selbst die 1.8 und 1.9er 4 Zylinder sind sehr Preisstabil und ziehen sogar an obwohl die meisten Baujahre noch nicht mal 20 Jahre alt sind.

Ehm yes. He likes quite a few bmw's. All the M5's. When he drove the m5 v10 he said it was almost as good as a f430. He chose the e46 m3 over the Audi S4. He loved the e46 M3 CSL when he drove it on isle of man. He nominated the new 5-series for best car of the year, said it was all you could possible want in a car. And to top it of, he owned a bmw 3.0 csl.

@505197 btu that's why they have the stig drive it around a track, so that you can actually see what the car can do. My dad has one of these and was kinda pissed throughout this bit until they took it around and it put up a crazy time, lol

The Stig is a pro driver they got to help them test their cars. Since he is the one who chalks up the timings for the various cars they will be in a sense, more or less fair, cos he is always the one driving them.

Just don’t understand some people’s reviews of this car. Having 2 relatively new Ferrari’s, a boosted s2000, and now the original z8, I love driving this car. Every time.

330hp for a naturaly aspirated engine is still pretty impressive. bmw doesn't make a whole lot of turbocharged engine because they like to keep a constant power curve with luxury and smoothness in mind. m3's engine is very responsive thou, with one throtle body per cylinder. yes you can turbocharge them, but you are looking at paying 10k just to get around 100-150hp.

During the recent snow I spoke to several people who got stuck - most of them drove BMWs! True.
Rear wheel drive = problems in bad weather.
Other people had no problems, they all had little front wheel drive hatches.

yeah it sucks I was about to get a 1977 930 with 550hp at rear wheels only 17k in 2004 the guy don't have the car on his name so no deal then I missed the z8 instead got 2000 prowler which I still own since 2004 but man wish I got that z8..

I got to see this car while it was still under testing with BMW. I always thought it was a beautiful car to look at, but was never aware of its performance.
For some reason that car resonates with me. I want to have one. NAY, need to have one. Shame they're still so expensive.
