Latrell Sprewell: From CHOKING HIS COACH to Playing in The Finals! A STORY OF REDEMPTION | FPP
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- He didn't start playing organized basketball until he was a high school senior, yet became a multiple time NBA All Star and even an All NBA player. But that's the part of LAtrell Sprewell's story that you don't hear; as after making one big mistake by choking his head coach PJ Carlesimo, that's become what you automatically associate his name with, or maybe it's his infamous quote that he "has a family to feed" as he turned down $21 Million Dollars. But Latrell Sprewell was one of the most exciting, talented and underrated players of his generation. He took the JuCo route before suiting for the Alabama Crimson Tide during his upperclassmen years, alongside guys like Robert Horry and JAmes "Hollywood" Robinson. He was drafted as a raw prospect to the Don Nelson led Warriors, where he injected life into a team that was seeing the quick decline of their stars, Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway. Chris Webber would join him briefly, but that was over as quicly as it had started; and Sprewell the next few years as a great player on a bad team. But a mistake in December, 1997 saw him choke his coach and be given the longest non-drug related suspension in NBA history at the time; and even though he made a mistake, he was painted as a villain and became a scapegoat, even though he was definitely provoked. His career could have been over, but the New York Knicks would take a chance on him; and he would more than redeem himself with the New York Knicks alongside Allan Houston, Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson; as Sprewell was the X-FActor of their 1999 NBA FInals run. He would help the Knick transition out of the PAtrick Ewing era, before spending his final seasons with the Minnesota TImberwolves, teaming with Kevin Garnett and Sam Cassell to give the the Timberwolves their first and only Western Conference Finals Appearance. But then his career ended abruptly after he was worth more than he was being offered. So even there's a couple blemishes on Sprewell's career, he was one of the most popular during the 90s whose on-court game doesn't get nearly the respect it deserves.

Latrell Sprewell was criminally underrated
I see what you did there😭😭💀
😂 Good one.
I’m born and raised in Milwaukee,WI. He’s a legend here. Trust that.
Yessirrrr we love spree here in the mil
in my TOTALLY honest and/or accurate OPINION legend PRETTY MUCH sums up a retired bucks player i did do and/or PROBABLY will really LOVE being kareem abdul-jabbar
Also a legend here in Bama 💪
We loved his game all the way across the PAcific
Straight up legend and regular home town dude. Will post up and talk shit with you if you run into in the clubs.
I’ve always liked Latrell Sprewell. Yes he was a bit of a hothead, but on the court, he was a tremendous talent, competitor on both ends of the court and was fun to watch. If it wasn’t for the choking incident, he very well may have ended up in the Hall of Fame. Dude played with an edge and a fire that I just don’t see in most star players today.
A bit of a hot head is a huge under statement 😂
@@j_mad 😭🤣
HoF tho? 🤔
@@poindextertunes Absolutely! Spree was a HOF level talent without question.
@@poindextertunesyes. He was on his way if that incident didn’t happen. He already made 3 all star games and could’ve made another 3-4 easily if that didn’t happen
"The type of player to take a coach's breath away!" Lmfao... Litteraly choked P.J Carlismo😂😂😂😂😂. He was a beast though
😂😂
😅😅😅
He said that on purpose 😂
😂😂😂😂
😬
I still love that '99 Knicks team 'til this day!
I'll never forgot coming home from the beach with my boys. Got home just in time to catch Larry Johnson hitting the 4 point plays, the entire bronx errupted. This is a fact. The other time i heard that was after David Tyree's catch
@@Brhoward31Yo!!! That four point play was crazy. Back then a four point play was very rare. I was young but I remember that play and loved that team.
It sure was the good old days @@matthewc3488
Latrell Sprewell was the most electrifying player to play on the court. He had a solid NBA career.🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀
I never saw him choke.🤷🏽♂️😂
one of my fav players back then. his angry dunk on the break was a thing of beauty
Brah this channel should be having millions of subscribers.....we have to help this guy get some more money man.....he's the best at keeping us informed with underrated or forgotten legends
Golden State Sprewell was an athletic explosive baller
12:10 15 years 74 Million ??? That’s wild
Another Banger my guy Latrell Sprewell kill the hearts of Miami Heat fans but mad respect for him
He had the potential to be one of the greatest players, but his toughest opponent and his worst enemy was himself.
Side note: Though this is totally irrelevant to this video, I still dig those early 90s Orlando Magic uniforms. They were still dope.
You never miss my boi. I always enjoy your content. How about Rip Hamilton in the near future.
RIP was the man. He won at every level, except high school because Coatesville couldn’t get past Kobe & Lower Merion. Natty @ UConn @ chip with the Pistons. I remember working at Nova Basketball camp after Detroit beat LA. Jay Wright talked about RIP’s movement without the ball to the camp kids for about five minutes. He was so hard to guard because he was always on the move wearing out his defender.
Latrell Sprewell became one of my favorite players from being one of my big brother's (not a big sports fan) favorite players player. I was like if he liked Spree then I might should pay attention go him. As for me I am a lifetime sports fan and player and had all the video games and cards. I absolutely loved those Sprewell, Houston, Camby and LJ teams. Then my brother bought me a Sprewell Knicks dunk figure collectable. So thank you for making this truly Forgotten Player video. By the way i even had my hair like his and Troy Hudson when they played for Timberwolves since it was already long like that.
That T’Wolves team was sick. Troy Hudson came out of nowhere, a true bucket getter.
Sprewell was tremendous.
One of my favorite Knicks of all time took us to a finals
Being from bham Alabama, spree became my guy. I hate his way of thinking destroyed his career because he had another 3 to 5 more years in him.
I was so mad about that 1994 season being a warriors fan we had the team that year injuries happening then we lost Webber it was over spre for 3 he is a legend 💯
You did it again another classic Big Time Great Job
Thanks for this one, I was looking forward to seeing a video on Latrell when I saw you hadn't done one on him yet. Also, that Brian Shaw episode on the Paul George podcast might be one of my favorites of any I've heard just for the stories he tells about every big star he's played with.
The nba is the only job where you can choke your boss and not go to jail for it. Shaw and his team-mates should've got Spree off of their coach, pro ball players are such prima-donas and entitled folks. I wish that first judgement had been up-held,Spree needed to be taught a very hard lesson.
been waiting for this one for a while ...
Sprewell's stock REALLY dropped, even in the summer of 1995. That was after he was All-NBA FIRST Team in 1993-94! In the summer of 1995, an OAKLAND writer was asked if the Warriors might do a Rod Strickland for Latrell Sprewell trade, since both were disgruntled. The OAKLAND writer said, "They might do an Otis Thorpe for Sprewell trade." Now, I love Otis Thorpe, but Thorpe was 33 and on the downside at that time." Of course, in 1997-98, Sprewell was temporarily worthless. He was a great ball handler with the Knicks, REGULARLY going coast to coast on fast breaks!
Why would they trade for strictland when they had Hardaway. It has nothing to do w his stock.
@@jamespohl-md2eq James, I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. The Sonics had just come off of our second first round playoff loss, and EVERYBODY was so anti-Gary Payton in Seattle (yes, he was a punk). There was thoughts of trading Gary Payton for Latrell Sprewell, and then trading Kendall Gill for Rod Strickland, giving Seattle Strickland and Sprewell in the backcourt, WOW!!! But, to answer your good question, maybe they were ready to flip Tim Hardaway somewhere. OR, fans (myself included) believed that if the Sonics traded Gill for Strickland, and kept Payton, that we could make it work with Strickland and Payton in the backourt. Or, that the Warriors could have made it work with Hardaway and Strickland, or Hardaway and Payton, especially since Payton and Strickland were tall enough to play 2 guard. Believe me, after 1995, I wanted Strickland in Seattle SO badly! During 1994-95, I wanted Clyde Drexler in Seattle SO badly! I DO admit, that my "NBA trade ideas world" revolved around the Sonics and Blazers. Oh, as for Otis Thorpe, at the 1994-95 trade deadline, I heard that Charlotte was offering Hersey Hawkins, and the Lakers were offering Anthony Peeler AND a #1 pick! Portland REALLY undersold what they could have gotten for Otis Thorpe! The Blazers and Sonics are so STUPIT, when it comes to drafts and trades!!
@@unappealingundesirable2826dude get over yourself. You arent in basketball for a reason. Case in point ...your suggestion of pairing freaking tim hardaway with rod Strickland...NEXT
A profile on Zydrunas Ilgauskas would be lit
Ugliest spot up jumper of all time but he made them mfs 😂
Ahead of his time really. Although he might’ve been a touch too slow to play todays game
@@poindextertunes Nah he could play today. He can shoot and protect the rim ala Brook Lopez
He was my favorite player in the league at the time. I was a young teenager. My father took me to see the warriors while they were in portland. This was while spree was asking for a trade or a new contract from the warriors. He wasn't happy with them. He damn near walked up and down the court the whole game. No effort, didn't care. I never felt the same about him after.
One of my favorite players
I think the choking incident along with the emergence of Iverson signified a changing of the guard and transition to a different type of player.
Sprewell was nice on the Knicks!!!
those dada spinner shoes is all i remember
Love your stuff Please make a Clyde drexler video !
in my TOTALLY honest and/or accurate OPINION a really elite star TOTALLLY sums up a NON top 50 player who i did do and will SOMEWHAT like being clyde drexler

I wondercis a video on Joe Smith and Billy Owens coming next? I love this channel
This was blessed to go toe to with all the greats of his generation and he went for the neck at all times😂😂😂😂. Respect Killer 🙏🏾💯❤️❤️❤️❤️👑
Great video, as always.
I've always wanted a team with Sprewell, Artest, Kenyon Martin etc.
Glad you told both sides of pj 💯. Media always made it seem like he was a great guy
Facts we know how the media likes to play favorites but yeah pj was a notorious hardazz goin back to his time at Seton hall
This guy was a beast man.
Yeah, just ask his coach he choked. LOL.
@@kerry-j4mduur hurrr sO fUnNy
I had no idea he spent time in Flint. That speaks volumes about his style of play.
in 99 , slam magazine had sprewell on cover w lead story as "sprewell saved the nba", I think it was due to the nba lockout.
Spreewell and X-man, the two best Knicks pickups of unwanted players from the Western Conference. GS loss was our gain. Ridiculous that he's not in HOF.
Milwaukee’s Best💪🏿
Hated the guys attitude in gsw (choking incident) but respect the fact that the guy was able to become the player that he has become even though he was late in picking up basketball.

Joe Smith said a few of their big men were scared of him, said he had DMX energy and he was OD strong 😂😂
Right On 👍👍 💯
spreewell And Reggie Miller was my 2 favorite players in the NB.A
Latrell is the Chennedy Carter if the NBA - but with dunks added
Spree was really legit. Ppl that don't consider him good don't know ball
Spree messed that bag up when he didn't take that 3 year 21 million if he only signed that contract and got busy Spree was my guy since Alabama
Spree was my 2nd favorite sg after Jordan.❤️🔥
Grew up in the bay area and followed The Warriors during his tenure there. Trust me. We all took LS side. The die hard fans weren't clutching our pearls shocked shocked by Spreewell attacking PJ and thinking he was everything wrong with the sport and troubled youth, but instead, wondered 1) what stupid ass thing coach did or said to inspire the attack and 2) what took so long for someone to finally have done this to PJ. Yeah. We knew the truth and not the media narrative painting Spree as the heavy. PJ deserves to have his head likeness carved from stone and inshrined onto the peaks of Mount DucheMore. Spree went to the Lakers and ended up getting suspended throwing a referee onto the scoring table. Guess what. I admire his restraint. That ref was a piece of shit and stain to his profession. Magic returned to play and tried to mentor him, but then he himself bumped into a ref while arguing and hilariously got ejected and suspended too. In Magic's case, it was incidental contact and an accident that the ref over-reacted on. Spree throwing the ref on the scoring table was a formal justifiable grievance rebuttal to terrible pkay calling. Spree is a national treasure and GD hero
Spreewell was da 1st one w braids even b4 AI
The Media Didn't Mention That
PJ Was Very Racy Against Sprewell.

@@vittiriowashington5211 I will never understand blowing your $ like that. But honestly idk what I would do with that type of money so maybe it’s easier than it seems
I new a guy who's last name was spelled the same way. He pronounced it more like "Sproowl".
"the type of player to take a coach's breath away".. Too soon? 😂😂🤦🏽♂️
Hot take: Nelly coaching The Hardaway bros, Spree, n Mulls!
Now picture this squad in today's league!!!😤
Did y’all buy the Dada sneakers?
Latrell was a great player , but his temper didn't help
What made Weber sign a 15 year deal? Even with the option clause, that sounds like a messed up deal to make.
Maybe Nelson was trying to sabotage him. Keep him from having more teams interested in him. Nelson has always been a flaky person.
One year or 15 years is too drastic.
But Spree is one of my favorite players. And might need to check on some old footage of that TWolves/Lakers final to see if the refs ripped the TWolves off like the did the Kings.
Yes sir💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I never saw him choke in a game.🤷🏽♂️😎
The knicks would’ve had a chance if they traded for spree after don got rid of Webber.
Great work! Btw could you do a profile on Jeremy Lin aka Insanity? Lin had an inspiring story, respectable career and even his own documentary film. Thanks !
Do Scott Skiles. Tim Thomas was your last good video.
That coach deserved to get coach.... punching the guy was too much but Spree was one of the all time greatest and should be in the hall of fame
9:53 hi Dominique
P.J. Carlesimo was a coach who had problems with his players going back to his college days at Seton Hall. He was an abusive coach who liked to yell, scream, and berate his players in front of everyone. He never should have been coaching men in the NBA! That style was going to lead to problems. I'm not excusing what Sprewell did, but Carlesimo was a punk coach!
They didn’t want to pay Sprewell
Roll Tide🐘
Now Spree is definitely blackballed from da NBA😂
SPREE WAS HIM!
Can you do Neal Anderson? That guy could have been 10,000 yard rusher but I guess injury ruined it. Idk could be good video 🤷♂️
Injuries had very little to do with him not getting 10k. He barely played for his first two years and he wasn’t injured.
Russell Westbrook on the wing basically.
ROLL TIDE
6:52 probably one of the dumbest trades in NBA history 🤦♂️
ID liked Sprews game, but he really lost the crowd when he didn't take the 21 million
Jaylen Brown > Sprewell
bruh they’re from two different eras 😂
Damn good player, piss poor attitude and temper. The $21 million contract not being enough to feed his family is a great example of how stupid some athletes are.
Love Spreewell but HE COULDN'T GO LEFT TO SAVE HIS LIFE!!! LOL
That’s weird. The highlights show him going left.
@@jamespohl-md2eq You didn’t watch him play. Lol
@@luismartinez1560Are you retarded? The HIGHLIGHTS showed him going left.
And, I was watching Spree before you even knew who he was.
It’s not fair that a person is remembered by his or her character. Lol. Your title line nonsense. You basically just disregarded the only thing that matters in the world.
no disrespect but in my TOTALLY honest and/or accurate OPINION the 04 wolves and 99 and 00 knicks were nowhere near as elite as the 60 61 62 and 64 warriors who in my TOTALLY honest and/or accurate OPINION were led by a guy who in my TOTALLY honest and/or accurate OPINION is a legend who i did do and/or PROBABLY will really LOVE being wilt chamberlain
Can't stand him, but I always think of the lyric "Going off the hook like Latrell Spreewell" with him, lol.
thanks a LOT for your honesty SERIOUSLY
He choked
Latrell Sprewell's career was somewhat derailed by immaturity, but when he was rolling, there weren't many wings who were better than him.
He choked his coach P.J. Carlesimo in an ugly incident and spent the rest of his career trying to rehab his image and channel his aggression.

SPREE! I used to wear # 8 cuz of Spree. No disrespect to Kobe
