I actually own a mannequin because I sew my own clothes (and because my sibling impulse-bought it, didn't use it and gave it to me haha) and it does spook guests all the time! I would not have bought it but I do have a good space for it in my sewing nook and it does get used. That said, I would never change its outfit daily! It just houses my latest work in progress.

Mannequins for sewers feel to me to be more like a tool (actively used for a functional task in your trade/hobby) vs a 'decor' item (whose primary purpose/function is to be looked at).

Same for me! 😃 I don't use it for the fitting process (my body is too far from the standard, I just can't adapt the mannequin enough) but it's so useful for some steps that are easier done in 3 dimensions than on a flat garment.

i'm allergic to dust, so from young age i have been cleaning my room every week. While always liked the look of shelfs, the idea of dusting it all of makes me not want to have them. I only like ones that are closed off with the glass door. Anyway, when i see peoples houses here on internet or in real life, i can't help but to notice the shelfs and wonder how do you have time to clean all of it.

There is a horrible trend out there of people buying books simply for 'the aesthetic'. If you're actually a reader, fill bookcases with what you truly love and are excited to read. If you're not a reader, that's okay! But there's no need to buy books just to toss on a coffee table or destroy by spray painting them for 'a look'. You should fill your home with what you're passionate about- not with items you're using to try and impress others with.

I used to work for Pier 1 Imports, which was the king of unnecessary throw pillows. LOL. And we were taught to add them into all the furniture purchases. Buying a sofa? Add some pillows! Buying a headboard? Add some pillows for the bed! Buying a dining table with eight chairs? We'd find a way to get you to buy tiny little throw pillows for each chair! New styles for every season, whether you think it needs a pillow or not. Some of the Christmas ones even lit up. It was fun at the time, but talk about unnecessary clutter in the home....

seconding the using personal meaningful items as decor. my husband and i have 3 skateboards that we ride but also just love the way they look. i built 3 wall mounts for them and attached them to a skinny wall near our door. they serve as art but can still be grabbed to ride, and the part that sticks out is now a little shelf we put plants on. and in a hallway we turned the entire hall into a gallery of art we’ve picked up along our lives, and i filled in any small gaps with hidden silly memories, like eclipse glasses and a parking ticket we got on a vacation. our friends always give us really positive comments on our decorating

I totally agree with all of these!! I also think the ultimate goal of decorating is to feel settled and cozy in your home, but if you're constantly chasing trends, you'll constantly feel like you're catching up or not done yet. Surrounding yourself with meaningful items or secondhand items that already have some use to them can make you feel like your home is somewhere you can let your hair down, not an aspirational place reflecting who youd like to be in some idealized future

I don't really feel like I need to look at photos of events that I was actually there for or full of people I see all the time. But the art? Oh, the art kickstarts my imagination and spirals my mind into all sorts of spiritual musings! As someone who’s a little older than you I have learned something about the random knickknacks compulsion. When you get your first place you want it to look as perfect as possible, whatever your definition of home is. However, since we associate homey with people’s homes who are much older, i.e. grandparents and parents. We feel like we have to have all the same stuff they do even if it has no meaning to us. Now that I’m in my 40s, I’ve been able to slowly transition from things I bought because of the aesthetic to only having knickknacks that mean something. Basically, you will accumulate plenty of items that are meaningful just as a consequence of living life. In the meantime, it’s ok to not have a ton of tchotchkes filling up every surface. If you really want something look to thrift stores, garage sales. However, my favorite method is asking older relatives if they have anything they wouldn’t mind lending or giving to you to help make your home a home. It doesn’t have to be something that they particularly love even. My grandmother gave me a swan pincushion many years ago that was an extra she had and I treasure it to this day. Every time I look at it, I think of her. Trust me, you’ll soon have more things than you know what to do with.

Ashley's Home Furniture is especially guilty of many of these. There are so many great pieces I get from Craigslist for less than $100 whole and in good condition from people "redecorating", while Ashley charges in the thousands for new home decor.

I have a dining table and chairs set that I got from a thrift shop about two years ago and while there are a few labels under it with a bar code and number, reverse image searching it as only gotten me to where I think it came from Ashley's Home Furniture. While the table isn't made of the highest quality wood (it's a rather light table), I love the powder black metal legs on it and the chairs. The chairs are also pretty thick, which I love that there's no risk of them cracking if I need to stand on them, like when hanging curtains.
Four chairs and a table for $275. Add in taxes and that I did end up needing someone to deliver just the table, and my total was about $325-ish. My budget for finding a table set was $400, so I feel I made off like a bandit 😂.

For example - the art illustration books about certain films, the fashion world of the barbie movie (I'm waiting to have my own home before I snag it cuz I'm short on space), behind the scenes of certain films, etc. I feel like if it's about something you love, it'll be something you can look at often

My "coffee table" books are art books from my favourite Dreamworks films, or collections from my husband's favourite photographers. They're the kind of thing you flip often and they say something about us and what we value.

Purely because you asked 😅For the floating lightbulb. Imagine that you try to place a ball on a convex surface, the ball will of cause want to roll down from the high ground to the low ground so to keep it on top you could constantly push the ball back up whenever it started to fall. The floating lightbulb is the ball and by turning on and off electromagnets you push the light bulb back to the center keeping it floating.
Then you just stick all the electronics that are usually in the light fixture in the light bulb and have the light bulb charged by wireless charging allowing it to turn on and off when it's placed and removed from the wireless charging stand.

loved the video! home decor is something i'm very interested in and i'm always surprised by how much 'extra' stuff there is. like, i legit did not know about 'coffee table books' until very recently. i thought influencers were all just interested in the same type of books to read, and then i saw one hold the book up...and it wasn't even a book, it was like, a box made to look like a book!
one thing i would love to see you deinfluence [if you feel like they should be deinfluenced] is fake house plants...i'm not able to buy any for my current living situation, but when i move into my own place i would just LOVE to have a bunch of fake house plants add greenery to my space, without the stress + extra expenses of taking care of real plants. but i don't want to go overboard with it. i know they're purely decorative, i just see them in stores and get so excited. 😅

    - Rattan / straw decor dries, breaks and flakes over time
    - Decor, if not stored, will gather dust
    - If you buy one unique kickknack you’re going to want to find and pair it with something similar/build a collection and that’s such a task
    - If you want a handmade decor - just make it yourself! Macrame, pressed flowers in photo frames, crotchetted pillow covers - they’re all great and easy DIY projects!
    - For soft things - BUT IS IT WASHABLE? If it’s not, what’s the point. You want a dirty item in your house?

I'm a throw pillow lover! I'm a DIY enthusiast and throw pillows are perfect for a handmade project: they are of simple shapes, do not require fitting and can be made in multiple materials and techniques (crochet, knit, patchwork, macrame etc). Also you can have a reasonable amount of pillows and just change covers on them for seasonal decor or just to spruce things up.

This video hit home for me for a couple of reasons:
1.) I bought a random mannequin from a Sam Goody store that was going out of business in the mid-2000’s. I was gonna use it as a dress form, but it didn’t work. It was just a random mannequin in (another) cluttered corner of my room. Ended up throwing it away.
2.) Throw Pillows! This trend did not last long, as I realized it was a waste of money (for me). I bought two very early 2000-esque pillows that I never ended up using. The material eventually deteriorated and I, again, ended up throwing them away.
I don’t like waste of any kind, which is why I am a recovering hoarder. But when I move into my new place, it’s going to remain clean, comfortable and spacious. No more unnecessary extras.

This is actually my first time hearing about a mannequin as something beyond clothes-making or a cosplay tool.
For anyone still thinking about it - a "Gentleman's Valet" is a better option as opposed to a mannequin - and as someone who enjoys planning my outfits, it doesn't take effort to dress it, but certainly allows you to organise your clothes.
It's like a bigger hanger of sorts, and definitely helps with getting ready in the morning.
This isn't a crit at all by the way - I enjoy your vids a lot - I think the de-influencing is important, and finding what DOES work (especially when my Gentleman's Valet is a hand me down and made a huge difference in my life) I'm really happy you talk about what's supposed to be "iconic" vs..... well, what actually works for individuals.

Cloud couch was on my wishlist for awhile but after seeing how it *actually* looks all the time. Another thing I think people maybe miss a lot with sofas that are similar as well - they all use down. There are a lot of us with allergies to down.
I loooove coffee table books but my issue with most of them is everyone having the exact same ones because they think they need to. Slowly collect books over time of things that you *actually* love. Mine are weird design and art books because... I'm a graphic designer / artist.

I used to clean home professionally. Whether it's an apartment or a mansion, I saw the same few rooms being used: kitchen, family room, dining room, and bedrooms & bathrooms proportionate to the amount of people living there. The fancy sitting rooms or dining rooms just collected dust. The game rooms were rarely used. Forget the home theater. Unless you're having a big party once a week, you're probably not using all those extra rooms. It really dissuaded me from buying a large house one day.

This video was not made for me but I watched it anyway. I love my coffee table books but I keep them in my bookshelf and take it out when I want to look at pretty pictures. Also I love storage, started when I was young, if my backpack didnt have a ton of pockets, I didn't want it. I will say that I did/do have a problem with knickknacks, not because I felt like I needed to fill a space but because there is just so much cute stuff out there! My shelves when I was young were crowded. As an adult the only shelves I have are bookshelves, which I put knickknacks on, but I have far too many still in boxes that I'm having trouble giving away.

I recently had the idea to digitise all of my closet cause that was the only for me to keep rediscovering pieces that I liked and purchased but have never worn. Also digitising closet would give my mind a clear idea of how much of my money is in my closet (literally). This project is stalled due to:
    a. I just do not have the time or patience to digitise all of my clothes because I expect miracles (like finish digitising in one sitting)
    b. I bought the wrong kind of mannequin
I bought the mannequin which is propped upright on a rod with wheels. This took up floor space and frankly like Cara says was annoying in my bedroom. I bought a chicken-wire half bust and hung it on the wall. This worked out better because it now no longer took up precious floor space but also was easy to stow on over the door hooks in front of the door when I felt like seeing it and hide it behind door when I didn't feel like seeing it and of course, 0 cleaning really cause there is no much surface on it.
Have I started digitising my clothes? not yet but not all of my dreams deferred have been a total fail. Some have potential, just have to figure out the right way that works for me and timing - its everything in life.

That's just called falling out of a trend, it's not deinfluencing. You're wearing a crochet top rn which is in trends..The best way to deinfluence yourself is to actually have genuine hobbies and interest, that way everything around you never falls out of style in your eyes. If you were a seamstress or fashion designer of sorts, you would use the mannequin as a decorative piece, because that is a part of yourself.

Worked at Restoration Hardware for a minute and the Cloud Sofa was an absolute pain. Every time someone sat on it it had to be fluffed, and RH is kind of known for having overpriced, low quality (for the asking price) pieces; you're paying for the name not the quality. Honestly, I thought the couch was super comfortable, but makes no sense for anyone who doesn't have a full-time cleaning staff or nanny. That can also describe most of RH stuff.
If you want to spend that much money I'd say just go buy a hand-crafted one-of-a-kind made-to-order piece for the same price and better make. (Or just buy a second hand piece and have it reupholstered)
