    When ibwas 17 I worked for a guy that owned a small farm and machine shop. I pretty much hated every second of that job but I learned thing like this almost every day for the 2 years I worked for him. I'm 34 now and this trick is still ine of the most valuable lessons I've ever learned bar none.

      Holes contract a bit when you heat them, but they'll sometimes compress a plug a little. Chilling the plug next does a great job of shrinking it. Icicles are great for that.

    • @Rome1017Lights
      @Rome1017Lights 8 місяців тому +15

      98% of the time the object and the fastener are different materials, so they heat and cool at different rates. The different rates they expand and contract at is just enough for the threads to come loose since we're only talking about needing fractions of a millimeter of clearance.
      I don't think I've ever had to cool something down after heating it

    So many people in these comments do not even know what's going on. Nothing was stripped. The dust that you see when he took off the first one was the remnants of the epoxy that was there when it was first installed. He then proceeded to repeat the process by putting in a new plug. Neither plug was ever stripped.

Yes the plug is soft they are made that way so it fails before the head does in case of it freezing or extreme overpressure it’s more meant to be held in by a removable thread sealant and locker than the good and tight method. Also this is considered a serviceable part and is to be replaced after so many engine hours or when doing a head service it is now not replaceable as he made it permanently part of the head with the epoxy.

The head had obviously been torn down and hot tanked and getting the rest of the passages cleaned out is the last step before having it surfaced and then reassembling it. He didn't do sht to hurt it. Can't use pipe dope right beside the combustion chamber! You know how hot that sht gets? Pipe dope is not even close to being able to handle those temps. However, I still have so many issues with basically using jb-weld instead of grey rtv. Rtv will withstand the heat but won't cause the fastener to gall on the way out. Jb-weld absolutely will cause the threads to gall. My only complaint
