Glad you like the videos! Getting out of the elements and making a nice meal for myself is definitely a really enjoyable part of each of my trips. I love cooking so to be able to cook on a mountain is really fun. Really appreciate the support!
I just had to laugh when, at one point in the cooking process, the caption reads " simmer on a low heat for around seven minutes". That is the sort of thing you would hear on a Gordon Ramsey video in a fully equipped 5-star kitchen. And you are doing it in a space of about 2 square feet. On your knees!! With a bloody gale gusting inches from your flame . I absolutely love the cooking part of your videos. Awesome!!! Take a bow!!!!!
😂👍 I always really enjoy the cooking portion of my camps when the weather isn’t the best outside. I get so focused on what I’m doing that I am able to take my mind off the weather. I was pretty lucky the winds calmed down a lot during my cooking though, or I just didn’t notice it as much 😂. Really appreciate the comment! Hope you have a nice weekend.
Great video. I`v been in the swedish mountains for 40 years now.Mostly because i`m a flyfishing nerd. Many nights in tents..cooking and sleeping...Hilleberg is good stuff and Fjällräven and Trangia. If you are dry...warm and not hungry it`s a great experience to be in the mountains. Thank you for sharing. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
Thanks! Sounds like a great 40yrs. I went fishing a lot when I was younger. Never fly fishing though. I need to change that at some point. Reliable gear definitely makes for a much more comfortable experience in the mountains. Really appreciate the comment! ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I'm fishing in mountains lakes in Alps. Altitude is about 2000/2500m but it's the same landscape than your Snowdonia. I looked a lot of video about winter camping in UK. You're very courageous to camp in these conditions : wind, rain, melt snow, humid air etc. I camped a lot in mountains but never with all these conditions in the same moment. I must change this year my old tent. It will be a hilleberg tent. Probably the soulo tent even unna seems good.
Fantastic video, the production quality is excellent, seamless blend of both hiking & camping too. Love seeing your cooking too rather than a boil in the bag meal, spending that long at camp, why would you not want to take some decent food along! Seeing how you manage to get so much gear in the 45L bag makes me wonder what on earth others are taking with a 60-70L Rucksack. Really excellent content!
Thanks! On these long winter nights making a nice meal not only gives me something to do but it’s also really nice to eat something that’s not been rehydrated. A bit more work but worth it in my opinion for just a single overnight camp. I was pretty happy I could fit everything into this 45L pack. I definitely have to cram it in but it works. Also makes it a lot easier to hike/scramble with than my larger pack. Really appreciate the comment. Hope you’re having a nice weekend. ATB
Llyn Bach (small lake). A fantastic camping spot, and secluded and quiet too. Another wonderful video, have admired your filming style for a while. Simple and effective. Everything that's great about a great camping video; taking the time filming the location and getting a sense of the place, seeing your camp equipment, and of course; the food (no freeze-dried nonsense here!). Oh, and refreshingly no music! Well done, a joy to watch. Da iawn, dal a ti.
Really appreciate the feedback. I try to capture the entire camp the best I can. It’s nice to give a feel for the area. Especially when it’s as pretty as this. I also really enjoy how secluded this area feels. Both times I’ve been up here I’ve managed to not see any other people which is always nice! Thanks for the comment. Hope you have a great week. ATB
Being watching old videos when you never spoke I much prefer you explaining everything now Another great video with amazing views Loving all the new gear 🙂
Double poled with standard AND 10mm poles! That’s one rock steady tent 💪🏼 Great area, snowdonia has a real wild feel to it. And I did not know the trangia gas burner sat in the triangle!! 🤩
I was very happy with how the Unna performed in the wind 👍. The extra poles are great but the additional guy lines definitely helped. The triangle is a pretty versatile lightweight stand. Love using it with the gas burner when I’m looking for more control over the cooking temp. Snowdonia definitely has a wild look to it but parking can be a bit challenging compared to the Lake District.
The amount of work that goes into these "solo" videos...the amount of setup and back tracking to make a coherent visual narrative is amazing and completely underappreciated. It's like 3X the effort of just going on the hike. Also, can we just say....how great is that Hilleberg "sand" colored fly? Okay sure...there are reasons to have a "blaze orange" tent....but that Hilleberg sand color blending in with things is just sublime!!
👍😀 Thank you! It definitely takes a bit of effort but I’ve come to really enjoy getting to relive these trips again when I get back home and begin editing. I end up hiking a bit more but it’s worth it. I completely agree about the sand color. That’s probably why I haven’t even considered giving the other colors a shot. It just blends in so incredibly well with the landscape in both the winter and summer. Probably not what you want in on expedition but for these overnight camps I’m happy to no standout from a distance. Really appreciate the comment. Hope you’re having a nice week! ATB
@@MGE9436 Yeah....very true. But then again in 30 years of backpacking I'm trying to think of a single time my tent fly color could have made the difference either in finding my own tent again or finding me and I honestly can't think of one. I've never been so far off trail from camp that finding my tent again was an issue. As for finding me, the times that I could have taken a spill and needed help I was away from home base skiing or day hiking and sorta away from my tent. Not that that kind of emergency can't or doesn't exist and that a bright fly might assist rescuers...but in terms of my own real world activities I sorta like having less of a visual impact on the landscape. Pictures and promo photos of a bright orange tent on snow are neat.....but there's something about looking at a hillside and needing a moment to notice a human being has made camp on it somewhere.
@@MGE9436 I agree. I choose this color intentionally to blend in. Once I setup camp I am not hiking away from it. They make these tents in red as well which would be better for expeditions. Especially if you were planning to use your tent as a base camp and set it up a do day trips away from it 👍
Thats a fab set up with the Unna and the double poles, but the weight of 275g fro each extra pole brings the total close to the weight of a Nammatj 2. You are so right about changing the guy line angle as it makes such a difference. Picked up this video from your Instagram by the way.. Best wishes and thank you for a great video... Tom.
Taking the smallest pack possible (45L), was my priority because of the scrambles I would be doing on route. The Nammatj just doesn’t pack down quite as small. I also wasn’t sure what the terrain would look like up here, so I wanted the smaller footprint and a freestanding tent. I was actually also planning on leaving the 9 mm poles in the car. But as I was driving to Snowdonia, the wind forecast just kept increasing so I put them in at the last minute. Knowing the weather and what the location actually looks like now I would have tried to bring the Nammatj instead if I could’ve still fit it in the pack. Hindsight is always 20 20 👍. I’m definitely happy I got to see what the Unna can do though! Thanks for watching Tom. ATB
Just subscribed and I'm so glad I did, really enjoying your walks, wonderful to see landscapes that I probably will never see in person, many many thanks. ❤ for bringing the outside inside x
I’m happy to hear you are enjoying the videos. Snowdonia is a very beautiful place with a landscape that is quite unique. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment and for your support! All the best
It’s incredible to watch the cooking aspects of your videos - definitely next level. Thanks for the great content, really appreciate the efforts you put in with the videos 👍
Really happy to hear you enjoy the cooking parts 👍. I love to cook so it’s always a fun challenge to prepare a normal meal as I would at home with my smaller camping stoves and pans. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. ATB
I was pretty happy I could get such a comfortable winter setup into my 45L pack. It definitely made the scrambling portion of the hike a bit easier. Really appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Man, thanks for this new video. I know how much discipline it takes to shoot when you are freezing and there's so much wind. Big kudos!! Dinner was next level!! What a bummer about the new sleeping pad, it is supposed to be a beast of a sleeping pad (very interested in hearing new developments on that). The sleeping bag bit was really funny. You, the elegant autumn palette guy looking like one of the Teletubbies 😊. Oh and nice couple of camping hacks, btw!! Thanks again!!
I am still a little bummed about the sleeping pad. I’m not sure what’s going on but with such a high R value I was hoping it would perform like a furnace 😂. I know the rating system isn’t great, but I definitely wasn’t expecting to experience any cool spots. More testing is needed and I will probably talk about it in my next camp as well. The sleeping bag on the other hand is perfect. It looks absolutely ridiculous (not the earth tone I typically prefer either) but wow is it warm and comfortable. I am curious to see how things will go next camp. Thanks for the comment. Hope you’re having a nice weekend. ATB
Your production and editing skills keep getting better! My favourite days are when either you or Simon upload a new vid! Keep trucking son, and keep adventuring!
Nice! I camped in the roughly the same spot a couple of years ago. The temperature was a lot warmer, however we were attacked midges!! Think I would take the cold over midges. I was able to have a lovely view of the valley below whilst eating breakfast and the water was still, so I have a mirror picture of the rocks against the water 🙂
Cold numb fingers definitely can make it difficult to get things done. I try to keep the gloves on as much as possible but it sometimes makes it difficult to get tasks done around camp or work the camera so I’m constantly removing them. Really appreciate you watching. Hope you’re having a nice weekend. ATB
Absolutely 👍. I would not risk taking a budget tent in these conditions. It may survive but if it doesn’t, you don’t want to be without a shelter in such cold temps. Especially with the windchill. Appreciate the comment buddy!
Snowdonia is very beautiful. It would have been a bit nicer if it wasn’t so windy but that’s just how it is sometimes. Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend
You definitely brought your big brass set to this trip for sure! So gorgeous up there! Thank you so much for bringing us up there with you! Take care and Happy New Year! NQU
That Fjallraven flat cap must be a pretty snug fit to not blow away in those winds. i got one myself after watching your channel and asking you what make it was in one of your other videos, theyre great little hats. so thank you. great video, great cooking great narration. Loving this channel👍
Yes the size I have is a bit tight on my head. Especially if I haven’t had a haircut in a while 😆. But I do like it snug for that reason. Typically it stays on even in the wind 👍. Though, a couple years ago in Snowdonia a gust took it off my head and it landed in the lake. Fortunately the wind blew it back to the shore and I was able to get it back. I would have been gutted if I lost it! It has become a bit of a good luck charm on my trips 👍. Really appreciate the comment!
Great video, beautiful scenery. The double poled Unna behaved very decent in those gusts. Kudos for the fresh cooked dinner. Often I'm so knackered after a long hike that I'm pleased I only need to boil water to rehydrate a meal. Still, a big difference between eating food/fodder and thoroughly enjoying food... Looking forward to the next hike.
Thanks! I always love returning to Snowdonia. It’s such a beautiful landscape. I probably would have preferred a nice calm night but it was nice to finally test the Unna in some strong winds. On a really long or difficult hike I sometimes wish had something very easy to prepare like a dehydrated meal but normally I really enjoy the cooking process. Thanks for taking the time to comment. ATB
Well done Todd. That is a hard trek in good conditions.Clogwyn y Person,a classic scramble was the other side of the lake.Your filming is second to none.Food as always AMAZING.Stay safe .🏴
Thanks! It’s not too far of a trek, which is nice with the shorter days, but definitely a fun one with the nice scrambles. I always feel bad not naming more of the surrounding peaks but I just don’t want to butcher the pronunciation 😅. Really appreciate the comment! ATB
A very well made and presented video my friend. Loved the narration along with the scenery, sometimes ppl just get it right and this is a prime example... youve earned yourself a subscriber
gods this is a delightful video. lol i cant deal with temps below like. 60F and you're out there hiking in below zero! its beautiful though. I must say you also eat better out there camping than I do at home, and I'm taking your recipes lol. i love that you make that a part of your camp, a good home cooked meal instead of those expensive hiking meals.
I do enjoy the cold air in winter. It definitely provided its own challenges but it’s fun. Glad you like the cooking portion of the video. It’s always nice to have a proper meal while out camping and I enjoy the challenge of preparing meals I would normally make at home with my camp cooking gear. You should definitely try the recipe 👍. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
This is a great area. I've camped lots in the Lakes but not in Snowdonia yet. I've gone up that way many times to scramble the Clogwen Person Arete. I normally stay closer to the waterfall on great rock. You've tempted me to go. Looking on Google previously, I wondered about pitching the mountain side of the Llyn above the rock?....... Great film again ( and food ) . Loved it.
It’s a pretty area! I like how nice and secluded it is. Because I was running out of light I didn’t even manage to walk around to that side of the llyn. The mountain side does sit higher and I bet would provide better views though. Provide there is a flat spot 👍. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment. ATB
Hiking up that icy incline, my only thought was "how the h£ll is going to get back down?!" Always entertaining and such beautiful scenery. Thank you as always for sharing your adventures.
Definitely a bit of a challenging route in spots. I got back down very carefully. Getting down was definitely a bit trickier than going up. Appreciate you watching 👍
Happy new year!! Starting off with a bang, great stuff as ever. Have been waiting for you to cook in the Unna “vestibule”, man it looks such a good tent.
I am really liking this tent. A really simple design and it’s nice to know it can also handle some strong winds if I need it to. Hope you have a nice weekend!
What are these scallions you speak of, they look just like spring onions! You'll be cooking with zuchini and cilantro next! Love your camp cooking mate and as a veggy, quite a few of your dishes would still be delicious if you took out the meat. I've just taken delivery of a Trangia Mini set which I've been testing in my kitchen, it's far to bloody cold for me to venture outside yet!
I would call these scallions. Spring onions look identical except that have a small white onion bulb at the end of the onion 👍😀. Glad you enjoy the cooking. The chickpea curry portion of this dish is very tasty all by itself. I definitely recommend giving it a try. Love the trangia mini! It takes a little bit more finesse because it’s tiny, but it’s perfect for one person. Really appreciate the comment.
That food looks great. That wind was absolutely horrendous and that sleeping bag looks fantastic. I lost bags because I did not put them on a pocket. Great video. Stay safe.
Thanks! The winds were definitely howling all night on this one. The sleeping bag was great! Will definitely be nice when it’s extremely cold out 👍 but overkill for most of my camps here in the UK. Appreciate you watching another video!
Gourmet food, holy shit dude! Well done 🙂 That Thermarest bag is on my list, it's an absolute killer product, enabling adventures to very inhospitable places! You're not the first person to report issues with the "8.5 R value" Tensor. Thermarest X-Therm is unbeatable, and combined with that Polar Ranger bag, you can pack for Antarctica. PS. What are those gloves? They look awesome!
Thanks! I do enjoy a nice meal on these long winter nights at camp 👍. The polar ranger is incredible. Such a warm comfortable bag. I agree the thermarest is top notch and nice warm. I’m just not a fan of the comfort. I’ve been so happy with my Nemo Tensor over the years that I wanted to stick with the comfort I am accustomed to. I’m assuming the pad just needed to warm up. Especially since I used the air pump instead of my warm breath. It did warm up eventually. Definitely need to test it further though. I use the Hestra Falt Guide Gloves. They are fantastic 👍. Really appreciate the comment!
Really nice video thanks, with some useful tips. Had my BeFree freeze a fortnight ago so having ordered a new filter. Hadn’t thought of inverting my water bottles! With the Unna I do find it really difficult pitching just at the moment when the poles go into their cups and the tent arches upwards - very vulnerable to a gust of wind. I never open the zipper from the bottom, but half way up - I step through into the tent. It saves having door fabric swirling in the dirt or needing to furl it.
Thanks! I agree, that can definitely be a vulnerable moment with the tent but no issues thus far. Definitely one of the benefits of the models that have the clips like my Soulo. Hopefully you won’t have to replace another filter 👍. In really really cold temps I will typically just keep it jn my coat pocket and in my pack. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Good to see you back out. Incredible views. Touchy place up and back down. The Hestra gloves? are they wool lined or acrylic? Swimming hole, heck yeah. Nordic tradition, bust it wide open. Hilleberg time. Some cold and winter winds. The 10mm will hold it but since you have the 9's good idea to just use them.. No doubts about it then. I do the same with my Jannu. Much enjoyed. Kind of outer jacket you wear? Take care.
Good to be back out! Yes, these are the Hestra Falt Guide Gloves. They are wool lined and the wool inserts easily come out so you can dry them or use the gloves without them. I agree, I think the 10mm poles alone would have been fine. Because the forecasted winds kept consistently increasing as I got closer and closer to the day I was camping I just figured I’d have the 9mm poles with me as well since I don’t trust the weather here in Snowdonia. I’ve been blindsided by terrible winds here too many times. I’m wearing the Fjallraven Keb Jacket. Really appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Hoping to get out in next few days. Ity's been spring to summer weather all winter here in Kentucky. It'd crazy. Some storms and cold coming for the next week. I'll see@@GoingSoloOutdoors
Looked an amazing spot to camp.ive got the hilleberg niak and i swapped to the 10mm poles it makes a massive difference im just waiting for the unna to come back in stock in the sand then i think i will get it and definitely get some more 10mm poles not sure I'll double pole tho i think for most occasions the 10mm will do.
Thanks! I would agree. The 10mm poles probably would have been fine by themselves on this camp as well. I have just been surprised by crazy winds too many times in Snowdonia to trust the forecast 😅. And this is the first time I’ve had this tent in strong winds. Since I hiked the poles up the mountain I figured I would just use them. Overkill but extra piece of mind 👍. Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Thanks! You definitely don’t get much stronger than a Soulo with 10mm poles. That tents not going anywhere 🙌. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! ATB
Another great video. I'd love to see you experiment with a coffee brewer like an Aeropress, if you're a fan of coffee like that! I appreciate it adds a bit of bulk and weight, but for me it would be one of the luxuries I'd bring on a camp.
Thanks! I have an aeropress and a nanopresso at home! Both make an absolutely fantastic cup of coffee. They usually come with me when I’m traveling with my family. Definitely a good luxury item 👍
Your videos are alway's awesome. I am amazed that you could bring all your extreme winter gear in such a small pack ! Maybe you should consider a balaclava in your pack to help protect your face from the fierce winds on the mountains . Thanks for the video !
Thanks! I was very happy I could fit all of this in my 45L pack. It made the scrambling portion of the trip much safer. I carry something similar to a balaclava called a buff. I used it at night to go retention the guy lines and in the morning to cover my face. Definitely helps with the cold winds 👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Awesome video! I wonder if the sleeping bag might be easier to get into the compression sack if you left the arm zips open? It looked like they were closed and were trapping air? Have you thought about anything from UGQ in the States? I got a custom made quilt with 950 fill. Absolutely incredible bit of kit. Not sure if you ever travel back there, but you’d save on Import Duty if you brought it back with you 😉
Thanks! Unfortunately not the air, the seams and antic let the air out relatively easily. It’s just an incredibly small opening to the compression sack. I tried squeezing it into a different bag when I got home but it’s nearly impossible to compress it to the same size you can with thermarest compression sac. I suppose they knew what they were doing when they designed it but I still think they could maybe make it a tinny bit wider. Yes I’ve looked at UGQ stuff before 👍. Looks quality! At this point I think I am now good on sleeping bags for quite a few years to come. Gotta save my money for my tent addiction 😅. Really appreciate the comment 👍. ATB
Yeee, double poled Unna with Delta anchors, going nowhere for sure! thanks for sharing. Going Snowdonia next week by train to Betws-y-Coed. I have 3.5 days to find that lake/Llyn! What spare guy lines do you recommend to purchase in UK? thank you
I was very happy with how the tent performed in these conditions 👍. The extra guy lines definitely helped. I actually borrowed these from my DD superlight tarp.
Stumbled upon your channel absolutely brilliant I,ve never hiked or camped but do find it fascinating May sound like a daft question but doesn’t the cooking attach wild life 😅 Sorry if thats a dumb question just wondered
Thanks! There isn’t really any wildlife to worry about here in the UK. Back when I lived in the states I would cook away from my shelter when in bear country 👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
That sleeping bag looks hilarious 😆. I was thinking getting back down would be a bit on tricky side. I got sent some Grfiti X bands from a friend in the US they are perfect for keeping your Trangia stuff together also lids on on things, they work a whole lot better than single elastics 😊
Nice one Todd - great watch in a brilliant area. Tent performed well and food looked nice as per. What pack are you using ? Not sure if I've asked before; I probably have. ATB - Chris
Thanks Chris. It was nice to see the Unna can survive those kind of winds. But I probably would have brought the Nammatj if I knew I was going to have this much space to pitch it. Assuming I could still cram it into the same size pack. I’m using the Fjallraven Friluft 45L. The old version. It’s been a great pack! ATB
I had to stop the cideo and comment on the cooking. It looks like youre feeding an army! Crikey. Looks delicious tho. Sadly ive never been bothered. Ive just used dehydrated meals with a cup of rice as back up. The double poles is a brilliant idea and incsn clearly see the huge difference that it made. All very enjoyable to watch!
Thanks! I really enjoy cooking so on these long winter nights when the sun sets early, cooking a nice meal for myself gives me something to do and just tastes great. I was very happy with how the tent handled the wind double poled. I probably would have been fine without the second pole put the added security was a nice. Really appreciate the comment. ATB
Good sir, I just started following your videos and love the inspiring hikes you share. I used to hike a lot in my 30s in Switzerland and would like to start again. I am looking to do more alpine camping and wondering what your favourite tent is so far? A few that I am thinking about are: Hilleberg Unna, Hilleberg Nallo 2, Hilleberg Nammatj 2.
I absolutely love my Nammatj 2 and Unna. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those choices you listed. It just depends which features are most important to you. I think the Nallo 2 might be a good choice because you get the wind stability and space of the Nammatj but it’s similar in weight to the Unna. So that might be a nice compromise between the two. Whatever choice you makes I think you will love it 👍. Hope that helps. Really appreciate your support! ATB
Thanks! I would actually prefer more snow though. But I suppose the grass is always greener. Wow -40°C is intense. Definitely don’t have to deal with those extreme temperatures here. Really appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend.
Oh man what a day it is when Going Solo uploads. I wish these Videos were a fortnightly thing, the production quality to subscriber count does not match needs to be a couple hundred thousand🏔⛰
Too kind. I wish I could do these trips more often as well but this is just a hobby. I’m a dad with young kids so I get out when I can. Really makes me happy that you enjoy the videos though. Hope you have a great weekend! ATB
Epic! Double poles sure made a huge difference and lamb is a “comfort food” for me as my gran used to do roasts on an old stove that were utterly delicious. As for the sleeping bag well you knda looked like a “grub” lol!
Wow you have some gorgeous places to camp. The climbing would be too much for myself because of injuries from a fall off my horse’s head. I couldn’t go off the side, I went all the way over her head. Then 3 years later I fell and broke my hip and femur. So it’s flat ground for me. But that’s why I watch Thanks
The UK has many beautiful landscapes. Oh wow your hip and femur! That’s a brutal injury. Completely understand wanting to remain on flat ground. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! ATB
Quality video, funny I've been experiencing the same with mats lately. I was looking at those winds thinking I'd be sleeping through the my Nortent, shame you didn't like it. I tarp a lot and use a lanshan so used to the challenges of a single skin even the way the PC copes, it's not perfect. Looking forward to your next adventure. 👍🏻
Thanks! The Vern 1 would have done really well in these conditions. I don’t think I would have been able to squeeze it into this 45L pack though. Which was the priority on this trip. I hate that I may have given that impression that it’s a bad tent, because I think it’s an excellent tent. Just not when the conditions are great for condensation. These conditions would’ve been perfect 👍. I will be out with the Vern 1 PC again! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors ha yeah I don't know how you guys squeeze everything in. Like Mary Poppins stuff just keeps coming out. Oh I know you thought its a solid tent. I mean it's amazing in wind. I get the condensation part. I was in serious clagg the other day for nearly 3 days. Condensation was bad. But exactly like you said if you leave it as a film it's fine, wind doesn't even flick it off, touch it and it will bead, need re wiping a few times until it forms a barrier again. British weather you just never know, was meant to be brilliant sunshine that trip. I use a water resistant sleeping bag (ME xeros) and dry bags for my kit. Some people use bivvy bags or synthetic bags 👍🏻
Yeah I’ve set it up near home in some terrible wind and it handles it like a champ. Much quieter than a double wall tent as well. Next time I use it I will bring a light bivy bag as well just in case the weather is the opposite of what’s expected 😅.
Quite invigorating winter camp. Your audio is great, but there is always a place to improve. Have you ever thought about a two-day camp and have the opportunity to make it happen in this hectic everyday life of all of us? Stay safe and healthy you and your love ones and all the best.😊
This was definitely one of the colder camps I’ve had in a while. I would love to do more multi day trips but I just haven’t really had the opportunity. I barely make time to get out for these single night trips. There may however, be a potential opportunity later this summer for a multi day trip. Definitely can’t make any promises though. As always, really appreciate you watching! ATB
Nice. I’ve been to this area many times but I’ve still yet to go up Tryfan! I need to change that. These are the Hestra Falt Guide Gloves. I wouldn’t recommend scrambling with them as they are not really designed for that but they will absolutely keep your hands warm 👍. Appreciate the comment!
The Hilleberg Unna! During my last trip I slept 115 nights in it. Almost every night I pitched it in another spot. Absolutely love that thing! Very well made video and story telling, loved it.
Wow 115 nights sounds like a proper expedition. If you don’t mind me asking, where were you traveling? I have many tents and the Unna has quickly become one of my favorites. Such a simple but strong design. Really appreciate the comment! ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoorsHi, I paddled solo in sea kayak from Arnhem (The Netherlands) to Spain by the Atlantic ocean. So I camped on countless remote beaches, rocky shores and little islands. Those places often don´t offer much natural protection against the elements and I have seen some pretty intense storms. But no sweat for the Unna! I did not double poled it, but I did use the 10mm poles of the Staika, which are suitable for the Unna as well. And -most important I guess- I doubled the amount of guylines. In addition I brought two sets of snow/sand stakes and also both inner tents ( the normal and the mosquito one) to adapt to the changing season. And also a footprint (sharp rocks...) I enjoyed seeing you in these strong winds in the Unna.
that sounds like an absolutely incredible adventure 👍. At some point I will probably try to get the mesh inner as well. I probably didn’t need to double pole the tent on this trip but figured why not since I had both sets of poles. The 10mm would have definitely been more than enough. Thanks for sharing!
@@peteredwards7616Likewise, I haven't seen a mesh for sale on their website in a while. Jeez, it's all very expensive... :( I'll have to stick with the full inner on mine for now.
@GoingSoloOutdoors reminds me of hiking the Sandias in New Mexico. The major difference was the diamond back rattlers, Gila Monsters, tarantula, scorpions and other little critters that were a normal occurrence. Still pretty and fun for sure.
@@kokopelau6954yeah we have NOTHING animal wise to worry about no bears no snakes no wolves nothing …the British seagull is so hard scared them all away The midges are the deadliest lol
You are insane, my man! I wouldn't climb up that cliff for a million dollars! Well, I'd try, but I couldn't carry the pack, it'd take me hours and I'd need a helicopter rescue to get down. I'm loving all these videos. Be safe.
😆👍 I think it looks worse on the GoPro than it actually is. Definitely makes for an interesting hike to get up here. Really appreciate you watching! Hope you’re having a nice weekend. ATB
Thanks! Thats a really tough question. It would be between the Soulo and the Unna if I was getting a single man tent. The Soulo is more storm worthy but the Unna is more versatile. After how the Unna performed on this trip, I might lean more towards the Unna. But sorry I can’t decide 😂.
Just brilliant as always! The way you explain each step of your trip in such a simple yet educational way is excellent. Thank you. PS - apologies if you have already been asked but what gloves are they that you are using?
Thank you so much for the feedback 👍. I am using the Hestra Falt Guide Gloves. They have a removable internal wool liner and are very warm and durable.
@@GoingSoloOutdoorsteaching us to hike camp and cook and be a nice chill Person Your children have a great role model and will have amazing skills for life 👏
Great video and camp! Those camps in high cwms/corries can often be the best. However I've certainly had some of my worst nights in locations like you chose. It seems like the wind speeds and directions are very erratic with big gusts sweeping downslope but coming from all directions! Did you get much sleep with the roaring gusts?
Thanks! I agree, the winds are always stronger and typically more erratic every time I come camp in Snowdonia. You just never know what conditions you will get but the views are just stunning. I was able to sleep some but I would occasionally be woken when the tent would get hit with a really big gust. Definitely wasn’t the best night sleep but I was happy I finally got to test the tent in high winds and I was really happy with how it performed. Appreciate the comment. ATB
😂👍 that’s a great comparison. This is probably my most used pack so I’ve definitely had a lot of practice fittings items into it over the years. Really happy to hear you enjoying the videos. Thank you for your support! ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Funnily enough, since watching this video I've purchased an Unna. Really excited to test it out in Scotland in a couple of weeks riding the HT550. It looks like just the tent I was looking for. Cheers. 🙂
@@david-pascoe It’s become one of my favorite one man tents. It may not be as bomber in the wind as a Soulo but the simplicity and space inside is just great. I was really hesitant getting a tent without a vestibule but it’s incredibly easy to unclip the inner corner to create a huge space for cooking 👍. I think you’re gonna love it!
@@GoingSoloOutdoors Thanks, I’m sure it will be fantastic. I used to work with a lot of Hilleberg tents, mostly big black labels and was super impressed with the build quality. This is the first hilleberg that I’ve owned personally. Looking to get a Kaitum 3GT later in the year and super excited about that one too. How do you find the Unna in the summer? I saw the video where you had the crabs under the floor and assumed that was summer? The mesh inner looks a good option for the Unna and I might go down that route for summer use. Anyway, thanks for your videos and the responses. Cheers. 😎
@@david-pascoe I’ve found it to be great in the summer even without the mesh inner as it really never gets that hot here in the evenings. My only critique of the tent is that I wish the small mesh section at the top of the inner door wasn’t so small. I wish it was the size of the entire door like many of the other RL Hilleberg tents. Either way it was comfortable in the evening. I just used a light summer sleeping bag.
Wolv, nice to see Snowdonia hills in such harsh windy conditions and with freezing ice, very difficult to record while walking specially still shots as it requires to go forward and backwards to operate camera, kudos to go on solo. Just one small request, quite few places camera moved to fast on handheld camera. Bit difficult for eyes, but I can see your running to pick tent cover , thank you. Rams, Wolvs
Thanks for the feedback. I agree I moved a bit too fast with the GoPro. I will try to be a bit more conscious of that next time 👍. Appreciate the comment!
Welcome to the channel. It’s nice when the weather actually cooperates and I can use the drone to show these beautiful locations. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you enjoy the rest of your week.
That was a serious scramble up. Buff Headgear is something worth considering, multiple configurations for covering neck, ears, head, cheeks, nose - it's a piece of gear is always have with me summer or winter. They make lighter/thinner fabric Headgear for summer which can be wetted to provide evaporation for cooling, heavier/thicker fabric for warmth in colder temperatures. A partial - full face balaclava configuration would be ideal for the cold/wind you experienced on the way up. 15:10; I would have looked for & placed big heavy rocks atop the tent pegs. 20:00 You just now donned your Buff Headgear just around your neck. To this day I prefer center/top zippers on a sleeping bag instead of right side or left side zippers. 35:45; I see you added some big heavy rocks atop the tent pegs. 45:45; repacking my backpack is always a time consuming & challenging task. Hilleberg has thought of everything when designing their tents - sleeves large enough so the shelter can be double poled. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
I absolutely love my Buff 👍. Come with me on every trip and was particularly useful in the morning to cover my face. It was surprisingly hard to find loose rocks up here that were small enough to lift and not frozen to the ground. These rocks I had to get from the flowing stream coming off the llyn. The top zip is really great. I absolutely love every Hilleberg tent I own. Incredibly reliable with a fantastic attention to detail. Really appreciate the thoughtful comment as always
@@GoingSoloOutdoors One of the "details" with all Hilleberg tents that rarely get mentioned are the zippers which are YKK "COIL" instead of teeth - smoother & they're not as likely to snag as a "teeth" type of zipper AND the "zipper tie down toggle" for keeping the zipper from unzipping during strong gusty windy conditions.
@@azclaimjumperI didn’t need to with this bag 👍. There is a big foot pocket within the base of the sleeping bag that you can slip your feet into. It was very warm!
Thanks! With a pad that has 8.5 R value I shouldn’t be feeling any cold from the ground 👍. Luckily it did warm up from my body heat after some time. Appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Loved this film, your film making skills are very good. I have a question, I have a Unna (I have the 10mm poles as well) but never had it out in extreme winds. You seemed to be getting some major wind and gusts, do you have any idea what they where, I',m trying to gauge the upper end of the tents wind performance is with 10mm poles, so I know what to avoid, do you have any thoughts on what that might be ?
I didn’t measure the gusts but i believe the forecast called for 35 to 40. I’d say they were at least at 40 when I went out to retention the tent and check on all the guys. I wouldn’t bring it out in anything above 40 mph personally. I would just rather bring the Soulo or the Nammatj for anything higher. The tent does pretty well in the wind though. As long as the side is pitched into the wind of course. The additional guy lines help a lot 👍. Hope that helps. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoors thanks so much thats really helpful to know, I had it out in 15-20mph a couple of weeks ago and the vent cover was really flappy and quite loud, I was surprised that was happening at that wind speed, maybe its my user error, have you found this happens at fairly low windspeed, once thanks again for you advice
@@FindingTheGoldenThread-nf8yv that is interesting. I haven’t found that the top cover flaps at much at all. At least not enough that the noise would bother me. Other parts of the tent. Particularly the large front and back panels can definitely flap a bit though. Did you use the tension straps to tighten the top down?
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I did tension the straps, I thought it was strange it was doing that, I will see if it does it next time and if so I'll contact Hilleberg. Thanks
Another great video! Just recently got into your channel and love it so far. I'm looking into purchasing a new set of durable gloves and yours look really nice - whats the brand and model youre using? Keep up the good work! Cheers from Örnsköldsvik, Sweden
Welcome to the channel! On this camp I am using my Hestra Falt Guide Gloves. They are my go to winter gloves. Hestra makes many variations for all kinds of activities 👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Thank you for this beautiful video, the recordings are breathtaking, especially at 47:40. It seems as if you were in the high mountains, fascinating. I've already seen a few videos of you using the Hilleberg Unna and I'm really excited about the versatility of this tent. I'm really considering getting it. Since it was just mentioned that the inner tent made of mesh material is now available again (thank you very much for this hint!) I would like to ask you for your opinion as to whether it is worth purchasing this accessory in combination with a new tent. I saw your video in Devon, it seemed pretty hot there. Were you able to handle these temperatures with the Hilleberg Unna and the standard inner tent? Some people say that with the additional mesh inner tent you get a 3-season tent, but I somewhat doubt this. There's just too much mesh material. What would be your opinion on this? Another completely different question: Is it an unwritten law in the UK that people only camp in muted colours? The unna is also available in red, which I would prefer for safety reasons; in terms of taste, sand would be my preferred colour. It's funny, in Germany we tend to be „safety fanatics“ and buy flashy colours, while in Scandinavia and the UK no one would ever think of buying a red tent, i believe. I apologize for my long post. Thank you for the time answering all these posts, this is extremely helpful and valuable! Martin
The Unna is an extremely versatile tent. It is not as storm worthy as some of Hillebergs other tents but as you can see on this trip it was really able to handle some tough weather when guyed out properly. Personally, I don’t think I really need the mesh inner here in the UK. I was very comfortable in the tent in Devon once the temps cooled a bit a night. It just doesn’t get that hot here. I may at some point pick up a mesh inner made my Hilleberg or possibly someone else so I don’t think it’s necessary to purchase that as well when getting the tent. Though, it really just depends on what temps you normally camp in. As for the color. I just personally prefer sand because it blends in with the environment. I don’t like to stand out on the mountainside. It’s just personal preference. For filming, a red tent is also not ideal because it really throws off the white balance of the camera when the light shines through the tent. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB
Great video. I guess there was no lack of ventilation that day, but what precautions do you need to take against carbon monoxide when you cook inside your tent? I'm very much a fair weather camper so never really thought about what to do in Winter.
You just have to make sure your tent is well ventilated when cooking. These stoves are also extremely efficient so they produce very little CO. This tent has a large vent at the top. I just make sure that’s open while cooking. But in winds there is also plenty of air circulating at the bottom of the tent. Almost nearly every camp I am forced to cook in my tent because of either wind or rain. Appreciate the comment
Ey up me duck. Tis always a pleasure watching your hiking and camping videos but I'm a little disappointed again, chuck that Hilliberg and use a Fjallraven tent, lol 😉 Ay a good'un me owd 🙂👍
Appreciate you watching another vid. As you can see from my clothing and packs I absolutely love my Fjallraven gear but I just prefer the quality and designs of my Hillebergs tent 👍. Hope you’re having a nice weekend!
I have done that with my other sleeping bags 👍Unfortunately that could never be done with this bag though. It’s just too thick. I could do it but I would have needed to bring a larger pack and I wanted to take the smaller 45L bag. Appreciate the comment. Hope you have a nice weekend!
The videos are fantastic but when you start cooking in the comfort of your tent, I could watch that all day
Glad you like the videos!
Thank you for adding Turkish translation to You tube, your videos are legendary, I'm watching them with pleasure, my friend.
Glad the auto translate is working. Please remind me if I ever forget to turn on the captions 👍. ATB
@@Lysandre-km6ct both great tents 👍
ATB
No probs! And by the way, that curry was an impressive camping meal 😅. Look forward to your next video, take care - Alistair.

Thank you! Really happy to hear that you are liking the videos. Hope you are having a nice weekend!
Double poled with standard AND 10mm poles! That’s one rock steady tent 💪🏼
Great area, snowdonia has a real wild feel to it.
Absolutely blown away with the cinematography as always. Feels like I'm watching something filmed with a crew of 3 to 4 camera persons.
Thank you. That’s great to hear. Makes me feel less silly for moving the camera around as much as I do 👍. Hope your having a nice weekend. ATB
ATB
I was just thinking about the colour of this tent. It looks very co-ordinated with the scenery but would be so hard to find you in an emergency.
ATB

Thank you so much! Despite it being a bit windier than I would have preferred, it was a really fun trip. Appreciate the comment!
Nice! I camped in the roughly the same spot a couple of years ago. The temperature was a lot warmer, however we were attacked midges!! Think I would take the cold over midges.

Thanks for the info.
Love your videos man. Just found your channel. Love your cooking too
Thanks and welcome to the channel! I really enjoy making a nice meal at camp 👍😀
Cant believe how well your new sleeping bag packs down.
👍😀 it’s pretty impressive. Definitely one of the reasons I chose this bag over others that were less warm.
I like how the zip goes, it's like jacket, rather than side zip, nice sleeping bag.
I do as well. It also makes it much easier to get in and out of the bag regardless of which side your door is on.
Thanks so much for another great video! You have me shopping the Fjallraven online store lol.
Thanks for watching. Fjallraven makes really reliable gear!
Great video, I've also added an extra 10mm pole and extra guys on my hilly soulo bl, it's like a limpet!!
I am getting pleasure of this trip. I saw Full video 🥰
Thanks for watching. It was a cold camp but a beautiful spot.
Found your content 2 days ago. Best thing!
Thanks! Welcome to the channel 👍😀
ATB
Made feel very cold ha ha but what an amazing video thank you so much .
It definitely got a bit chilly but overall a really fun camp. Appreciate you watching.
Stumbled upon your channel absolutely brilliant
I,ve never hiked or camped but do find it fascinating
May sound like a daft question but doesn’t the cooking attach wild life 😅
Sorry if thats a dumb question just wondered

I got sent some Grfiti X bands from a friend in the US they are perfect for keeping your Trangia stuff together also lids on on things, they work a whole lot better than single elastics 😊

This is fantastic thanks so much for this, I wild camp in the Chilterns and so its rather more tame.

ATB
@@GoingSoloOutdoorsi totally get it 💯 i just find for me im totally rooted and cant be bothered lol. But it looked fantastic
ATB
Great vid. As usual. Loving the non snowy landscape. As I text it’s -40 c here with wind chill near -50c Thx

I’m definitely going to have to revisit this area at some point 👍

Amazing country and backpacking meal at 27:20. Lamb coconut Curry with rice is nice!
I have never even thought of double poling a tent. I get the logic.
Thanks! A pretty simple meal to prepare but very flavorful 👍. Appreciate the comment.
It’s a nice option if you have two sets of poles. Especially for some tunnel tents which ordinarily only have 1 pole. Extra piece of mind.
And also a footprint (sharp rocks...)
I enjoyed seeing you in these strong winds in the Unna.
that sounds like an absolutely incredible adventure 👍. At some point I will probably try to get the mesh inner as well. I probably didn’t need to double pole the tent on this trip but figured why not since I had both sets of poles. The 10mm would have definitely been more than enough. Thanks for sharing!

@GoingSoloOutdoors reminds me of hiking the Sandias in New Mexico. The major difference was the diamond back rattlers, Gila Monsters, tarantula, scorpions and other little critters that were a normal occurrence. Still pretty and fun for sure.

Thanks! Thats a really tough question. It would be between the Soulo and the Unna if I was getting a single man tent. The Soulo is more storm worthy but the Unna is more versatile. After how the Unna performed on this trip, I might lean more towards the Unna. But sorry I can’t decide 😂.

ATB

Rams, Wolvs

@@GoingSoloOutdoors
One of the "details" with all Hilleberg tents that rarely get mentioned are the zippers which are YKK "COIL" instead of teeth - smoother & they're not as likely to snag as a "teeth" type of zipper AND the "zipper tie down toggle" for keeping the zipper from unzipping during strong gusty windy conditions.
@@azclaimjumperI didn’t need to with this bag 👍. There is a big foot pocket within the base of the sleeping bag that you can slip your feet into. It was very warm!
@@azclaimjumper the red toggle definitely helped to keep the door closed on this trip 👍

It’s not easy, but earplugs help. As long as the tent fabric isn’t hitting you in the head 😂

That cold you feel on your legs can be avoided . Its the strength of the cold in the ground
Hi mate we’re are you from ? You sound Canadian 🇨🇦??? Brilliant videos watching you all time.
Originally from the states but moved to England around 4 years ago. Really appreciate you watching my videos 👍😀
