Hello Max [MAXIMUM Entertainment] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air (Germany) in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. After several rescheduling, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the concert took place at the beginning of September 2021 in 3 consecutive days. However, it is recommended that you wait until you have acquainted yourself with more of the Nightwish portfolio before diving into it. When you get to it, be sure to listen to the live at Tampere 2015 version. It is over 20 minutes long and it is a world class masterpiece.
Think it’s not too bad to do Greatest early myself.. If you’re a music lover and do a bit of research on the song, you’re pretty much in good shape to go in..
Poet and Pendulum, now that one should be kept in the fridge a bit.. If you have built up a love for the band (and it’s members), that one hits just sooo much harder

I'm Dutch and I'm so proud of Floor Jansen. But Tuomas (keyboard player) is the true mastermind behind the band. He is a real treasure.

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6)
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot.
Also , Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.
Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist and songwriter of Nightwish) is the main composer for Nightwish.
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a
synth you can do a lot.
Marko Hietala is "The Viking" ( is a Finnish heavy metal vocalist, bassist and songwriter).
Internationally, best known as the former bassist, male vocalist and secondary composer to Tuomas Holopainen, of the symphonic metal band Nightwish. He was also the vocalist and bassist as well as composer and lyricist for the heavy metal band Tarot. He was also a member of the supergroup Northern Kings, and portrayed one of the main characters in Ayreon's 2013 album The Theory of Everything.
Emppu Vuorinen is the Electric Hobbit and trickster (Finnish guitarist, most famous for being a founding member of Nightwish and occasional songwriter).
Vuorinen is primarily a rhythm player, often supporting the keyboard or orchestral parts of Nightwish songs. However, he plays lead melodies and solos as well. Vuorinen's solo techniques usually include alternate picking, tapping, sliding, legato, and minor to extreme whammy bar use; he also employs sweep picking, although very rarely. His solos are more melodic than those of most metal bands, but he sometimes shreds (notably in "Nightquest," "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion," "Romanticide," and "Gethsemane" by Nightwish, and also in "Traitor" by Tarot, for which he provided a solo). Nightwish's first three albums feature a larger amount of lead guitar work from Vuorinen than their later albums.
Vuorinen is also a creative force in Nightwish, having co-written songs with Tuomas Holopainen from Oceanborn until Dark Passion Play. The song Whoever Brings The Night on Dark Passion Play is written by Vuorinen alone.
Vuorinen recorded guitar parts for Almah, a Brazilian metal band, order to help his friend and vocalist Edu Falaschi (former singer of Angra). Vuorinen did not stay in the band because of his obligations to Nightwish. He was also involved with Brother Firetribe, an AOR band, which as of 2018 has released four albums worldwide: "False Metal" (re-released as "Break Out"), "Heart Full of Fire", "Diamond in the Firepit" and "Sunbound".
Jukka "The Pirate" Nevalainen is the former drummer in the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish (left for health reasons, but is still a member behinde the scenes).
He Is famous among Nightwish fans for wearing a bandana on his head, even during shows, his energetic drumming style, and for his spinning of his drumsticks. Joined Nightwish at the age of 17.

Awesome tune , although it is kind of a popish sound (originally sung by Anette), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER !!!
Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.

Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a spinto soprano with a range of almost four octaves (D3-G#5-F6). When listening to her sing, it is apparent that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and is a Master vocal coach. It is incredible how she is able to take any song from any genre and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal, Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet. There are no bad songs and each one you hear is very different from the other. And each one will become your new favorite. That might sound ridiculous but we have seen it over and over again. This is a live band. This is a rarity that the live music is better than the engineered versions. Stick with live.

Well, Max, I'm no pro, but I've listening to music probably as long as your grandpa (I'm 75) and I can tell you this is the best band I've ever heard. Of course, I love classical music as well as metal, so symphonic metal really synthesizes two of my loves. Just saw Jinjer a couple of weeks ago, Phoenix symphony last year.
I'm sort of with you, I'm 73 and have heard and listened to everything. Classical and Nightwish are my cup of tea also, but only discovered Nightwish 2 1/2 years ago. Nightwish with Floor live concerts (Wacken2013 is unbeatable) are the best, along with all of Floor's solo projects. Then I guess I have to go back to the 60's, 70's, 80's for my favorite bands. I'm a professional critic, and most of the super heavy, power, and progressive metal bands just don't cut it with me, along with Rap. This version of Storytime is mine and my grandaughter's favorite Nightwish song.
Jinjer is on my list and has been requested a LOT. I love orchestral music so combining them is always amazing

Hey man, like FFDP as well, and I am an old school metalhead. This band is completely amazing, and I am hooked bigtime. Their lead vocalist Floor Jansen, has the most perfect and versatile voice you will ever hear. I liked and subbed for your journey, you will be shocked and amazed if you give it a fair listen.
I see Gabriel made it here quickly. It's only been 2 years since I discovered this wonderful band and you'll find that "Live" is best as you get to feel the additional energy they bring, and most of their live stuff was preplanned to be put out on DVD's, so they are well mixed and a great listen.

Storytime is great rock song, but it's just an apéritif for the emotions Tuomas and the band will serve up. Welcome down the most rewarding rabbit hole in music! There are no set fillers or duff songs, every single composition is masterpiece and with Floor Jansen there's a generational talent to take you on the ride.
Hey Max. Best option when starting your journey listening to the Nightwish catalog is follow Gabriel's list. You will get some laidback songs, some pop-sounding songs and some metal sounding songs but regarding your question that you have asked all the listeners, The lead for Nightwish is Tuomas Holopainen who is considered "The Metal Mozart". I would listen to Nightwish and to Auri. Also listen to Epica who have a fantastic Piano player who also has worked with Aryeon. Lots to discover in this style of Music. Also, if you have 25 minutes (not kidding) and you want to hear some great piano, play "Greatest Shot on Earth" Live at Tampere, Finland.

Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. I'm genuinely surprised and blown away that wig stayed on while you were doing that lol. But welcome to the world of Nightwish. There's sooooooo many songs to recommend, like a lot of us have said they're had 3 different singers and all 3 have bought something unique to the band. Like this song Storytime for example. This was made during the Anette Olzon time which I'd highly recommend listening to the studio version as well to hear the difference. From the Tarja Turunen time I'd recommend FantasMic, Romanticide, Planet Hell, Slaying the Dreamer, Nemo, and I wish I had and Angel. From the Anette Olzon Time. That version of Storytime, Last Ride of the Day, Bye Bye Beautiful, Amaranth, I Want My Tears Back, and Scaretale (takes about 2 minutes to get going though). And from the Floor Jansen time so far - Noise, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, Alpenglow, and any previous song sung by Nightwish she does them all justice.

Nightwish is on another level, and I love that yet another person is getting into their music. If you want a song with great piano that rocks, try the album version of "Going Down" by the Jeff Beck Group. It is from the '70's I think but it still cranks today. And yes, I am that old lol.
Yes, the Greatest Show On Earth Has great piano music. Stunning in every respect. Don't do it until you have several more Nightwish songs under your belt. You should mostly follow Gabriel's list. The order enhances your listening experience.

Glad you liked the song and the band.. I know many will recommend you the song Ghost Love Score and it's one of their epic songs in a bit of the mellower spectrum with more symphonic elements. If you want to make a flat transition to it I would recommend to do Song of Myself first (same concert) which combines the epicness and more chunky metal sound..

Fortunately Floor Jansen is a vocal coach and many reacting vocal coaches rate her very highly. LOL The studio version of every song (15) at Wacken 2013 will be by one of the previous singers as all written for them and Floor joined mid tour and learned setlist in 48 hours, there is a video !! So only with band ten months at this concert and blew the 82,000 crowd away.

They are a pretty damn good band. Far better than most, and those better when Live??? I have seen bands since '73 and Nightwish is the best, imo. Their execution on stage is flawless and the complexity can get out of this world (I play about 10 instruments.. they aren't bad).
The only thing fake on that stage are the pipes in front of Tuomas' keys setup... back in the very early days a few were loaded with pyro (can be seen on a 2008 Finnish performance, iirc) but as a former pipe-organ tech/voicer at the Rodgers Organ plant, I can vouch for the stage-prop-ness of those tubes. (oh wait, that might make me both a professional music listener AND sound manipulator... nah, that was back in the early 80's... no current street cred on that one).
