Sons of Winter and Stars is one song, with a little 'acoustic' guitar (no drums) section in the middle. It gives Kai some time to drink some water, wipe his face and check his kit. As other's have mentioned it is one song but that interlude, the part where you were questioning this is acoustic and does not have drums during it but Kai went nuts here. As if 15 min song is not hard enough he had impromptu drum solo in the middle of it! x)
damn, I've always loved Kai Hahto, but never actually thought about his accuracy. He's like a machine, 100% locked in to the tempo. Alex Rüdinger is the second one that comes to my mind with as precise playing. In those straight parts the groove is so precise it almost doesn't sound human at all. Thankfully he also has great humane groove on the not-so-straight parts lol
It‘s really worth watching the official video of that song, which is filmed in a studio. Another great song by Wintersun and Kai is „Time“. Also filmed in that studio.
it's the same song, it just has a little drum free part in the middle. gives poor Kai a chance to wipe off some sweat and have a breather, lol. his legs must be shaking after this one!

It's just a calm and clean part in between the two parts. You hear it goes back to the same pattersn in the end, tho there is usually no drums on that part, he just put a drum solo in. for the clinic purpose I assume.

You should have checked this out in the live studio rehearsals. There you can hear all the instruments and how crazy this song accually is.
9:13-9:16
You can see Kai's technique in his right feet to 'stop' from double paddling to give way for Jari's Guitar pluck to be heard more. What a beast.
Truly awesome 😎 So many styles nice to enjoy another drummer new to me!!👍👍🔥
As other's have mentioned it is one song but that interlude, the part where you were questioning this is acoustic and does not have drums during it but Kai went nuts here. As if 15 min song is not hard enough he had impromptu drum solo in the middle of it! x)
"The accuracy is out of control" 🤣 that meant something else
I was giggling a bit too at that 😁
damn, I've always loved Kai Hahto, but never actually thought about his accuracy. He's like a machine, 100% locked in to the tempo. Alex Rüdinger is the second one that comes to my mind with as precise playing. In those straight parts the groove is so precise it almost doesn't sound human at all. Thankfully he also has great humane groove on the not-so-straight parts lol
jeezus!!! dude is balls! I'm floored.... just started and I feel the need to comment
Kai is ultra top nice, kind and humble guy!
I believe it!
How have I not see that video of Kai, what legend
Kai explains parts of the song here:

This!
Hardly. He has to keep on going full set when they play at live, and Wintersun has some pretty fast and technical songs.
Kai Hahto perfection live is insane too, rotten sound in general had some insane speed with Hahto on the drums.
Kai has been or is in 3 bands
Nightwish - for fun "relaxed and simple" drumming
Rotten Sound - for insane speed
Wintersun - for completely sperging out on technical stuff
Swallow the Sun - for insane slow-mo
@@tespiii Aha, didn't even know that.
Sorry, a late addition, I'm just listening to the album entitled -Hour of the Nightingale-, which is suitable for this rainy autumn day mood. With the mention of -Swallow the Sun-, Kai's work in similar spheres with the band -Trees of Eternity- should not be forgotten.
@@soundworks1554 It's a deeply touching, sadly beautiful album. Last voices of that nightingale, Aleah Stanbridge (Starbridge), the singer, wife of Juha Raivio, the guitarrist. She died at 39 years (for cancer), and they already knew it coming. Many/most of the songs reflect that - in the mood, but also the lyrics.
An album you cannot listen to without crying

This one will be...🔥🔥🔥
He was destined to be a legendary drummer... his name is an anagram of HI HAT A OK
😮🥁🙏🙌
@@AndrewRooneyDrums and Andrew Rooney is an anagram of "Annoyed Rower"
@@WynEvans1 That's something ANYONE can REWORD
@@anttipere7220 you are absolutely correct Trainee Pi
@@WynEvans1 Yep. I read it on navy news
Yay. I made it into a drummer video. And I am a former bassist. And it was only my comment.
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy, finally. 😁
Hahto is a great guy, he was my drum teacher for a while back in the day. I was a kid but i remember thinking his house was the best ever. It was all metal cd:s and a bed in the middle of the living room cause the bedroom was converted to a rehersal studio... just drumkits and chinas everywhere xD
There is also a drum cam of this with his double bass setup.
If you haven't already have a listen to the Sonic Pump Studios version of this track (full band live rehearsal), seen them a couple of times and Kai was good enough to indulge my fanboyism and take a few seconds to shake my hand on his way off stage one of those times. Great drummer and a nice dude :)
2002 Kai went to New York to learn more about drumming. His teachers there were Freddie Gruber and Joe Morello.
He was learning to play jazz which he integrates into his fills at times and also plays in his off time.
And Jim Chapin and John Riley as well, jeeeze! That's a quartet of drummers!
We have pretty good metal musicians here in Finland 🤘❤️🇫🇮
You have some of the best. The more I delve into Finnish metal the more awesome artists I keep discovering.
You should also check out Kai's work in a band called Rotten Sound. All I'm gonna say is that it's surely less melodic than this or Nightwish 😂
And Kai hits those drums hard.
The studio recordings of "Hate Eternal - Faceless One" or "Hate Eternal - Behold Judas". Derek "One Take" Roddy is quite possibly one of the most technically and musically advanced drummers in the extreme metal scene, and he record directly to tape, no edits. His new project "Serpents Rise" is also amazing.
It's just one song but the composer (Jari Mäenpää) had instrumental part in the middle which allows Kai to have a pit stop.
I subscribed and now I’m above average size, wish I knew !
Thank you Andrew :D
Kai really can blast like 2 hours easily for sure! Been playing with him lot’s of tours!!!! It is just you can’t never ever play these Finnish grooves! And He is a drum educator, one of the best . So wanted to see ya even try that 😃🤣 you don’t have enough Skills 😂😂🧐
You forgot to mention that he didnt miss a beat on the kick drums, regardless of what was going on up top :)
Kai is the beast!!!... Hail from Indonesia
Awesome. Glad you got to this song/performance.
I wish there was a version with better quality sound. Can still appreciate how much of a beast this man is, so much going on with all limbs
It's the symphonic metal genre that Nightwish is in, usually long songs but usually a start, climax, and finish. Kind of like acts in a show
So now you've seen the symphonic stuff by him, time to check out his grindcore past - for example, Rotten Sound - Obey. I don't even think you've covered any grindcore before on this channel, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that.
Or "Perfection" or Tuska Open air drum solo.
It's just a calm and clean part in between the two parts. You hear it goes back to the same pattersn in the end, tho there is usually no drums on that part, he just put a drum solo in. for the clinic purpose I assume.
And you haven't seen him at his fastest yet. You should dig deeper and get into his grindcore days with Rotten Sound. 😳
Kai is a god, there is nothing else to say
It's so funny seeing him playing this after all his work with Nightwish.
Andy, please, PLEASE review Dirk Verbeuren - Late for the kill, early for the slaughter recording. I don't think that you have seen this guy play drums yet and you totally need to!
Yup, this is a great one, also from the Nordics 👌
