  • All to often I see techs chasing their tails trying to fix in an issue and assuming the new part they put on was the wrong diagnosis simply because the symptom they were attempting to repair is still there. Always go with the data and never assume NEW means GOOD. -Enjoy!

I was a young mechanic at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer. They traded for a couple of years old Caddy and the automatic temperature control wouldn't work. Since I was fresh out of school, they had me diagnose it (no manuals or service information). I checked everything and it came down to the control head. It wasn't a big part, but it was expensive. Got a new one from the Caddy dealer, installed it, and the ATC still did the same thing. My credibility is now in the toilet and I was the youngest guy in the shop. I retraced all my diagnostic steps and still came up with the control head. As I was getting out of the car to tell my sad tale to the service manager, I noticed that I had been setting on the new part. I had reinstalled the old part by mistake. The new one did take care of the problem. I don't think I told anyone at the time.

I remember working in a small Gas station from 1976-1980. 2 pumper out front, 2 bay garage. Mostly general repairs, water pumps, valve cover gaskets, etc.
Carburetors ruled the roads. In the absolute bitter Indiana winters, we would tow them in, push them in, pull all the sparkplugs, drain the oil, blast the kersosene salamander to the grill. That was the fix. A huge SUN brand tune up tester would be our go to tool. We thought we were all that, looking at the oscilloscope, wave patterns, cancelling cylinders to compare cylinder balance. We even had a sniffer to put up the tailpipe. Timing belts were popular replacements in the 2.3 ford's.
I recall they had only stationary tensioners, so too tight against the belt, she would whine like a blower ! The GM's ate ignition rotors. Like Eric showed, they would burn a hole through the rotor and ground out to the distributor. Some customers would carry a spare rotor in the glove box/ just like many would carry a spare bal. resistor when driving a Dodge! Anyway, I am sure as Eric and Ivan would agree, it's a bumpy learning experience. I learned much about car's and even more about people, working there. Today, that little 2 bay garage is still there, what memories ... Thanks guys for your video's. Both of you.

When I worked at international, customer ran engine(DT466) out of oil, burned up the bearings. Quoted an engine from our part dept, customer selected to get an engine from Jasper. Gets dropped off, I install it, I go and start it up, has a horrible rod knock. I pull the oil pan and can wiggle rod #3 up an down on the crank. I pull the cap and find that they forgot to put a bearing on the rod cap. They just totally forgot it. I check the delivery crate and it had dyno info for the engine even. Called jasper, and the very next day they sent an engineer. He looked at the rod cap, then looked at the dyno paperwork, shook his head, left and made a phone call, and came back in and said a new engine would be here next day. It turns out, the guy who was "running" the dyno was falsifying paperwork and not actually running the engines in the dyno. Jasper paid every cent in labor and extra parts to replace the second engine(second engine was fine) to this day I do not recommend Jasper. And that's how I spent most of May 2017.

That made it maneuverable so you're not picking the whole thing up and bouncing it around. Not sure if your camera will allow but the older Sony we used allowed you to hook up to a monitor that I placed on the base and used it to see the scene as it was being setup It helped a lot. We sold a Golf like that once. Customer drove 30 minutes home and it overheated. We only ever drove it 10 minutes when it was on the lot. They took it to Canadian tire who pressure washed the engine to see where the coolant leak was...... Then the car was a no start after that. They towed it back to me and I found a huge crack in the plastic coil pack. Sure enough one of the secondary windings was open... Put a new coil in and no start... Tried another new coil still no start. Boss had me pull that car apart for 2 days, looking at wiring diagrams and trying to figure out what was going on. I had no scope then and this was before I went to trade school. Finally I determined that the wiring diagrams I had didn't match the car. Dealer supposedly found a broken wire in one hour. So the next 1999 VW with mysterious no start we sent straight to the dealer. They again charged us one hour and gave us the part because a tech had one in his box. It was a relay with an integrated circuit. The next 1999 no start was a 2.0 turbo passat. The dealer couldn't figure that one out and we sold it as a no start.

Defective new parts is one thing if they just don't work.
But when that defective new part takes out something else...
Euro GMs for a time used a twin relay in a yellow case for the indicators (turn signals).
They were common for the contacts wearing out after a few years, easy diag and fix.
However a local shop replaced one and on this occasion they tried the left turn and suddenly the door locks went crazy and the wipers and washers started on their own.
I went to diag, found the relay had an internal short from load side power to control side ground so cooked the driver chip in the body control module. That driver chip controls 6 other circuits.
Luckily a local component supplier had the automotive spec driver chip in stock, for about 50p ($0.60) and it took way longer to get the module out of the vehicle than it did to replace the chip.
Put a claim in to the local factors with a report and they did pay labour and consequential damage.

I experienced something similar on a Dodge Charger 2.7 V6, thinking that what was new would be good. It was leaking water from the driver-side of the engine block. Only two things are there, one is the thermostat, and the other is the weep hole for the water pump. So I replaced what was easiest, a new thermostat + thermostat housing, but the leak persisted. So I went ahead and stripped off the front of the engine, timing chain and all that to replace the water pump. Leak still persisted. Couldn't figure it out until I removed the thermostat housing again... the brass bushings for the bolt holes that limit torque had seperated from the thermostat housing. So while I did properly bolt down the thermostat housing, the bolt was only holding down the bushing, which would remain attached to the block. The housing however, now being seperated from the bushings, would just lift away from the block and leak, just sliding along side the bushings for the bolts (much like a brake caliper slides back and forth on the caliper bolts + bushings). Thank you Dorman for excellent aftermarket quality thermostat housings.

The worst new to me part I've ever seen was a rebuilt master cylinder. My buddy had a Dodge truck I think 1984. And his master cylinder was going bad. He could tell pedal was getting soft pads are good no leaks around the caliber or the wheel cylinders. And the brake fluid was badly discolored. So we figured it was an aster cylinder. Got a new one or new to us rebuild and put it in flush the whole system in the process and lo and behold that one was softer then the one we were replacing. So we got to do that twice. It was a local auto parts store if anyone can remember what one of those are. They fixed us up with a replacement and they gave us brake fluid to flush the system again, no charge. I miss the days when you'd walk in and talk to the guy actually owned the place and had a vested interest in you coming back. I replaced all the abs sensors for about $45 each. Found out that the ABS bulb in the dash was removed. Every time I replaced a sensor I went back to oreillys and had the codes read. It seemed like I was making progress but I ran out of funds and the ABS still doesnt work. The trac control doesnt work either so now Im just used to it. Sometimes the easiest fix is to just remove the ABS bulb. The trac control off light stays on but its a button and cant be removed though. Maybe when the weather warms up Ill revisit this but there was also a code saying something about the abs actuator. Not sure what that meant but I had to many other things to fix at the time. Thanks for the great videos!

On 2006 Subaru Legacy GT. Power steering pump failed. Went on CarID and got a new (not remanufactured) PS pump. Installed it - all foaming letting air in. Replaced all the gaskets with new OEM ones - still letting air in. Went to dealership, bought OEM Subaru PS pump. Installed - works great, smooth no air.
Out of curiosity, I inspected the hole where PS fluid intake is. There was a groove in the wall of the hole letting air in!!! The tough part came when CarID was refusing to take the pump back, claiming that it was installed and installed improperly!

@@volvo09 well, it happens largely because not everyone can afford a $6000 scope with all the attachments and a $2000 bi directional scanner with a $500 a year subscription fee just to fix their own crap that probably should be more reliable if it was less complicated in the first place.
And to note, it is sometimes cheaper to replace every component in a system yourself with aftermarket parts store crap than it is to pay a shop to put OEM parts in after diagnosis. This is especially true when they load up the parts cannon too. But an example is I just recently had a catalytic converter go bad in an 09 malibu. The OEM cat replacement from the dealership was $1300 for the front cat, another $900 for the rear cat and it turned out the exhaust manifold was cracked in 2 places with leakage.
I didn't check the manifold price at tge dealership but I replaced all three plus both o2 sensors for less than a grand. It's an 11 year old car with 197k miles on it. Paying someone to do it with OEM parts would have cost more than the car is worrh. I likely didn't need to replace the rear cat but whatever, the symptoms are gone, it's drivable and I put 80 miles a day 6 days a week on it going to and from work.

When it would go bad you could almost bet that the new part would be bad also. The parts store said that about 7 out of 10 "new in box" were bad and would come back. Early lesson learned for me. JS

Shortly after reassembly, I ended up on a wild goose chase trying to figure out what was causing intermittent terrible misfire conditions and cat overheating. It all boiled down to one of the new spark plugs having an internal crack that only showed up when it was sufficiently hot. I can't believe how much time I wasted on that bs.
