- In this video I have a look at a customers 2017 Honda Civic. He replaced his own rear brakes and then after doing so the red brake warning light was on along with the service brake system light and warning alarms going off! He did take it to another shop before bringing it in to us and they told him he needed two new parking brake actuators! Boy that would have been an expensive mistake. Let's use some logic and figure out what is really wrong with it. -Enjoy!

When the customer picked up the car told me he had actuators in the back because he had already taken it to another shop to find out what went wrong. Good thing he came to SMA before losing a few hundred dollars in parts not needed. Or better yet good thing the other shop didn't put them on and have to eat the cost of them for being wrong in their diag! Let this be a reminder to keep it simple folks. If something worked before you touched it, it's likely something you did. Accidents happen, but double check your work and use a little logic. Could an actuator have failed? Oh for sure. Stuff happens I know, just take the time to make sure before you unload the cannon.

We stock that harness at the Honda Dealership I work at it’s super common. I had no clue it was repairable I always thought it was broken always learning from you great repair Eric!!

When a roll of electrical tape has about 1/3 left I keep it in a special place for special circumstances. Use the new rolls for wrapping stuff in the open. Love the tip with the socket!
Good idea on that one.
Put the socket on the 1/4" impact for faster spooling. Should tale all but two seconds to get a whole roll of tape on there.
@@kain0m That's what I do --- but I use a Snap-On 11mm x 1/4" drive 12 point --- the oddball in my socket rack - and I can always use a 7/16" SAE if I should happen to need an 11mm. Easy-Peasy.

We run a large fleet of Honda's here in the UK this particular problem happens alot when we do rear brake jobs. I knew as soon as you pulled up the code what the fault would be. 😋 pleasure to watch as always 👏👏

Hey Eric. Well done. BTW, I work for the company that makes that cable assembly. The connectors are specified by the customer, so it is what it is. The 4 wires.... 2 for the EPB (electronic parking brake) and the other 2 are WSS (wheel speed). The combined cable has been created to simplify the routings. This is getting more and more common with other OEMs too.

Just a guess but I assume that those connectors are engineered that way to do exactly what they did in this situation. The owner dropped the caliper and the pin pulled apart instead of destroying the connector. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again….this is hands down the best channel on UA-cam. Keep up the good work.
Eric and ChrisFix are at the top of the automotive channel heap. I learn a _lot_ from both.
ChrisFix recently became the YT automotive channel for subscribers, passing Top Gear and currently standing at 8.19 million subscribers (including me, of course.) If his subscribers were a US state it would be the 13th most populous state in the union, with almost a million more people than my own state of Arizona.
I believe you are on to something with that observation. Probably one of the few times an OEM experienced an issue while developing a system and essentially fixed it with that type of connector.

I found this channel randomly a while back, and i must say i'm hooked! I'm not much of a car guy or really mechanical, but the content is riveting.

The Engineer specified an electrical connector to use, then the Accountant found a "similar" connector that would save the company 5 million dollars over production. The accountant got a $10,000 bonus and then the CEO pocketed the difference.
And the engineer got nothing :(

I’d agree; most electrical connectors are the result of the most cost effective way to join the components already designed. So I’d really blame the poor design on the actuator motor’s plug. Throwing a stabbing guess the actuator manufacturer was maybe focused on the most weather sealed design connector, then the OEMs are left to deal with how do we join our harness to this plug. Idk fun to speculate though.

With SMA's fair prices and honesty, if I lived within driving distance I wouldn't be doing my own auto repair.
i would still try to do jobs on my car that are within my ability because fixing your own stuff is very very satisfying and there are handful of things on this world that can give us that level of satisfaction.
Problem is; we don't know what his prices are! He certainly knows his craft......

I'm no EE, but I think they may have known this might happen. The double/triple piece connector is for strain relief. Instead of breaking something, it just pulls apart.
Makes sense being that connector is most likely gonna see some strain every time a brake job is done.
That very well could be in case the DIYer gets frustrated and yanks on the cable cause he didn’t take tire off.

I don't agree. Strains induced by the part being dropped never is a consideration to a design engineer. They just want compliance of the part under NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES --- and falling isn't normal.
My favorite part of the whole video is you saying that you think Mrs. O looks real nice today. A man should have this kind of love for his wife on a daily basis. Good for you for cherishing the wife of your youth all of your days!

Great tip Eric , something simple can and often is over looked and can cost the customer a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$ and they still have a problem after the parts cannon is loaded and fired .

I actually took the tape tip and modified it. I put my "mini roll" socket on my drill and and spun it slowly to get the tape on and all I had to do was hold the tape roll! Great video, great presentation!

What I learned from this video: cars suck and there should be a South Main Auto everywhere there's a Main Street... Erik, you have to clone yourself for the greater good
I found our SMA where I live. It's such a relief to have a place you can count on. I am a car guy but don't have the diagnostic tools for some of these issues. I had a CEL on my daughter's Mazda that was kicking my but. Thought I had it figured down to an intake manifold air leak. I took it to this shop to confirm and they showed the PCV hose was cracked. Had to remove the manifold to get to it. Worth the $179 diagnostic charge to confirm before I tore into it. They were right on.
Another great tip for getting electrical tape (or teflon, or ...) into a tight spot, is make a wrap around the end of a pen or pencil. Because it's small, and has a built in handle, it makes it super easy to get into tight spaces.

Two things,
1: why four cables going to a two pin connector
2: with the tape and socket trick, if you put a short extension in the socket it would be much easier to wind the tape onto it.

I was used to seeing those seven-segment figures roll up into “8s” and roll-back into nothing on those 80s era Buicks and Chryslers with those vacuum fluorescent digital display instrument panels.

I came across a "double donger connector pin" the other day on a VW EOS trunk lock , I was very surprised it was a first for me 👍

Thanks for the video! Your troubleshooting techniques are top notch. I’ve been teaching industrial electrical maintenance for many years and your way of finding the root cause of the problem is one of the best IMO. We need an auto shop like yours in northeast Indiana. Keep up the good work!
When the light fell it gave me flashbacks. Back in the day the light had a bulb that would go out Every Time it fell. Even the heavy duty ones.

South Main Auto... The connector is made that way so if the technician drops the caliper when performing a brake job the two pieces will come apart and not damage the actuator, plastic connector or the wires so that the actuator and harness doesn't have to be replaced.
"Hey I did my brakes and now everything is broke". Story of my life there fella.....story of my life.
That looked like a pretty high quality contact. Nice weather seals, even has several layers of them. You should send a bungee cord back with the car, so the guy has one to hang the caliper in, for next time.
The Japanese make nice wiring harnesses. Cuts out most of the faults their competitors cars get.
I suggested your channel to my daughter's boyfriend who is studying in college to become a Class A mechanic... mentioned to him that you are one of the best channels for learning... he seems to agree.

Hey Eric - we also have a South Main Auto clone of our own here in Springfield illinois, its called Verns Auto Repair. Family owned, great shop, capable mechanics, fair prices and honest as the day is long. Only place I take my truck.
"If I can do it, you can do it..." - this always makes me laugh. I most certainly can't do it. The only tool that works in my toolbox is my credit card. It's a good thing there are guys who can fix things...
Here's a free tip Friday. If you're using an Android-based scantool that has bluetooth, you can connect a BT mouse and keyboard to it, prop it up on your bench and essentially have a scantool workstation. Not entirely sure this works on scantools, because I can't afford one, but I know it works on all Android-based phones and tablets, so I'm guessing that it works on anything Android. Enjoy.. O yeah, and thank you so much for your videos. This is by far my favorite channel. Thank you for sharing.
Even more pro tip With the tape trick, use a 17mm 3/8s fits perfectly in the end of your finger and you can take your drill on a low speed to put the tape on the socket and don’t you have to sit there manually taping the socket
Not if you have man-hands. I need 24mm. LOL
I always used a short piece of 3/8 polypropylene tubing. I could hold the ends of the tube between thumb and forefinger if I needed to unspool more than an inch or two of tape in quick order... also, the Super 88 was the only tape I'd ever use. Eric's correct about it being the best!
@@greatnortherntroll6841 I’m from a Benz dealer never actually heard of that tape but for our wiring jobs we have to make it look factory as per Mercedes Benz.. so we just use the tape they supply us but it’s the best I’ve used. Basically feels and looks like hockey tape
Does Benz use the self shrinking tape? That stuff is amazing but equally scary. Once the backing film is removed there’s some chemical activated witchcraft that makes it self heat shrink. Folklore has it that if you wrap your finger it will cut the circulation off.

I'm glad to see that your not just a parts changer as most mechanics are these days! I'm 72 and only twice have had a vehicle in a shop to be fixed; but today it's hard as most things are not serviceable, but just replace. I miss the days when I could take things apart and grease and put back together. I'm not impressed that there are no more greasable joints/drive line parts! I guess that a service now is change the oil and fill the windshield washer tank; HaHa!

Hey Eric O., Nice diagnosis and repair job. I am a retired E.E., and that repair was nothing short of genius. The connector was probably engineered this way to prevent a broken connection due to vibration. I like the Old style manual hand pull E-brakes on my Hondu Element. Push button shifting, push button E-brakes, etc. are trendy but a PITA when things go wrong. I just got smarter b/c of your video. Thanks, Eric. Keep Wrenching!

Not gonna lie, i just did a 19 civic rear brake job. After putting it in maint mode and doing the job, the scanner wouldnt put it back in norm mode and threw a left rear open dtc. Gotta thank you on this video i watched a while back and it reminded me of the problem, i stressed out that one wire and it popped out of the connector. Easy fix thanks to SMA

I can imagine the engineer that designed that connector giving his evil laugh when imagining a mechanic looking at the pins and seeing two intact pins in the holes.
look closer and you'll see the inner one is missing or recessed(the actual conductive electrical terminal), the outer piece is a stainless/spring steel for greater tensioning and anti-vibration of the inner terminal(if I'm remembering correctly).
that kind of thing is dealt with a lot in other fields which have tons of wiring and connectors.

It isn't so much the complexity increasing prices - it is inflation. My first car, a 1970 Mercury Capri, cost me $2790 out the door. My mother bought a house in Hayward, California for $15,000 the year before - Zillow estimates the "value" at more than $600K now.
The practice of "replacing hardware with software" actually lowers costs a lot. Electronics are pretty cheap to make and software costs only whatever the development and maintenance costs are. Ten or ten million... same costs.
@@flagmichael actually the average cost of a vehicle is significantly more today than in the 70s even taking inflation into account. Atleast from when I've researched it. However, cars are much much safer today.
When you need a clip to hold the pins in the connector, it's over-engineered. Some of these newer connectors were designed by committee.

Thanks for the tip. heard ab out these finicky connectors before. When I did the rear brakes on my 2016 civic I was fortunate to look up the ebrake on youtube first. So I remove the parking brake motor and screwed in the shaft but did not undo the connector on it. Just laid the whole works aside. Luckily it all worked out fine with no error codes or warnings after. Just had to cycle the electric park brake a couple of times before driving it. Thanks for posting and for your help!!
so make sure the wires are longer than the hose when letting the caliper hang...

Or just use a coat hanger to hold up the calipers to the strut/coil/etc, e.g., if you need to pull rotors or have calipers off for extended time.
@@SouthMainAuto Years ago I bought a cheap roll of soft iron wire. I cut off a piece of it and use it to hang calipers, always worked great and so cheap you could use enough to hang from wherever was handy for the vehicle being worked...

The funny part is the “automatic parking brake” actually started waaaay back there as “hill start assist” for vehicles with manual transmissions. Essentially if you rolled backwards on a hill it applied the parking brake. Kept people from burning up clutches for the most part.
Some Class 8 trucks still have this system, works the same - applies the rear axle & trailer air brakes to keep from rolling backwards.
My 2015 Volvo day cab has this system with an auto trans… kinda redundant.
@@rpp1348 the AMT in your Volvo still has a clutch so the hill start is still effective at saving it. No torque converter in a class 8 trans, it’s an “Automated Manual Transmission”. Some now even have a dual clutch setup. The XE package from them I think is one that the dual clutch AMT is an available option.
VW's variant of the hill start assist is based off of not releasing the brake fluid pressure, and is available on cars with mechanical parking brakes and electronic.
@@panzerveps My Challenger works that way as well. Uses the ABS system to keep the rear brakes applied until there is a second or 2 of throttle input.
Studebaker had that in the early 60's. They called it the hill-holder clutch.
