Yes, more small space videos, please. WE downsized from two homes, approximately 3500 sq. ft. total, to just the smaller home about 1400 s ft and sold the other. I can tell you that I will never go back to a big home. I just love my small home. I have already incorporated some of these tips, especially using vertical space (we are blessed with high ceilings in the common spaces, as well as lots of windows/light) and having fewer things but bolder things. We also let go of almost all decor that didn't mean anything to us personally, and am left with things that we have made, things that were made for us, items collected on travels, travel photos, etc. So, when I sit in my small home, I am surrounded by objects of importance....to me.

Having lived in 400 sq ft for our family of four for almost 4 years, we definitely needed to maximize our space, especially vertical space, and multifunctional furniture pieces really helped! We had to custom make a couple of our pieces so thankful my father in law is a carpenter! We used oak pieces that should last forever and are also so beautiful!

Great video! I'm in 1330 square feet, and just replaced my overstuffed sofa and loveseat with a low profile modular sectional - it's the only seating in the room, but it comfortably seats 5 people, I can stretch out with my dogs, and it looks fabulous. Now I'm working on my high-drama canvas to hang over it.

Long time viewer from Australia. I love your passion and warmth toward your chosen career. I agree with almost everything in this video. I own a two bedroom apartment and I can say from my own experience that upscaling the quality and finishes, while minimising the amount of 'pieces' is the way to go

We have a smaller house but since we need fewer items we choose nicer things. We can splash out on the details like silk blend curtains and wool rugs because the overall cost is lower than if we had to dress a larger space.

Vertical space/hanging curtains from the ceiling works the same way for the bathroom shower curtain too. Combine/hot glue/sew 2 shower curtains together vertically, or get regular (fast drying) room curtains and hang them close to the ceiling. It will create interesting drama not found in most bathrooms!

I definitely agree about the paint colors! I redid my mobile home with light blue toned gray all the walls are this color and all cabinetry got painted a dark medium gray almost looks charcoal and these colors are cool toned but I paired this warm lighting and my space just feels cozy and sophisticated very homey

I live in a 400 ft2 studio apartment in Brooklyn, New York so that is my small living! I’m watching this while putting together an IKEA wardrobe that was just delivered today because, of course, I also don’t have a a single clothes closet! I live in the apartment with my dog and it’s usually just us but my niece is coming to stay with me for the 4th of July and I have a friend coming in September so I also have to make my studio work for when people visit as well. So everything has to do double duty and I really have to plan things out well.

I too have a tv room painted entirely in black, something most people would balk at but they are missing out. I love the depth the colour brings to the room and of course the drama. And as a viewer in Europe (Ireland) I came here because of course as you said our rooms are on the smaller size, loved the advice. I'm off to measure up some rooms.

My 1300 sq.ft. ranch style home has a semi-open space concept. The Dining space is approximately 10.5 x 12. When I viewed this home prior to purchase, there was a small dining table in this space framed by a large picture window. I went with an 8ft x 3ft table, that comfortably seats six. The scale fills the space while providing enough "maneuvering" room and makes the space feel Grand and welcoming and provides a much needed large scale work surface for DIY projects and entertaining for special occasions. Love your tips.

I invested in a few nice pieces and it feels really full and cozy but I moving into a bigger apartment and Im afraid every thing is going to feel like its floating around in a big space. love small space videos, but I also feel as if I don't have a good sense of how to decorate in general. I have an awkward small space living room. Currently in a 1300 square foot home, although a good portion of that is an open finished attic, Given my indecision in decorating and a living room that still looks unfinished after a year and a half of living here I am trying to find what helps I can! current question, any thoughts on putting open shelves for photos over a sideboard table, or rather hanging photos on the wall....family and friend photos.

Gotta tell you - the BEST pic you showed was the comparison of the two windows showing how to hang curtains! I've been telling friends this for years but they can't visualize it. Your sketch showed precisely what a huge difference it makes - both windows ( the glass-framed area ) are exactly the same yet, with the curtains hung higher and wider, the window on the right looks WAY bigger and more elegant. I actually took a screenshot of this so I can show my sister who is about to invest in new draperies.

My apartment is waaay too small to buy BIG anything.
The items I feel need to be proportionate to the space, a large lamp.. in here? mmmmm...not in here, its 14x10. I have to walk a tite rope with decorating and its taken me years to edit and size things. I do have a giant photo on metallic canvas above my apartment size sofa, and yes hang things high. I agree, I find mirrors good also, if you can fit them.
Hanging pics and mirrors on fronts and sides of bookcases works too! A mirror there will reflect the room behind it to appear longer and larger and bounce light around. Great ideas! Thanks :)

Dear Valentina, could you maybe soon make a video on colours in rooms and how to work with the colour of the floor one got? We moved to a flat in centre Germany which we renovated completely. Yet, the living room became my biggest problem. We have a beautiful wooden floorboard in this big room, as well as huge windows and stucco moldings. The predominant colours are white, light wood which is a bit yellowish and we painted the walls in a warm creamy greyish white. Now we stuck! What furniture? White or black ? Or anything else? I love it cozy, dramatic, personal but minimalistic and wide in the same time… maybe you have ideas to share with us. Thank you so much! Best from Germany

Great video. I’m moving to a small space that mid totally open with windows on one wall and a solid wall where the TV goes. I am stuck on the furniture. I started buying before I moved in . I purchased 2 small chair and a 36 in ottoman. The chairs are brown and the ottoman is dark gray, light gray, some gold on a cream background. Needless to say, they do not go together. So, decided to create a den with the chairs but don’t know how to use the ottoman. I want an ottoman for a coffee table because people think they can use coffee tables for putting their feet on.
The way the model home is decorated is light and airy but it also doesn’t have any window treatments. I need furniture that will hold people over 250 lbs because when I do have family over they are pretty good sized.
I’m just at a loss. I will be working with a designer at the furniture but the furniture store is about a 45 minute drive. Also, I don’t know if my kids will ever come to visit but I would need a sleeper sofa for that. Just venting and scratching my head.

Fabulous video thanks V... One idea I always use in small spaces is to have as many items as possible be multi use items. Eg. My kitchen pantry that I made out of a balinese tv cabinet, and created extra shelving inside for a panty. I used the backs of the big doors, to create a panelled hook system to hold all my necklaces and earrings. Another idea, was to use the 6 inches behind the front apartment door when it opens, to create a 36" wide x 7' high taylor made shelving unit to hold shoes, and hand bags, covered by a neutral curtain, the same colour as the wall.

We are a family of four in 400 sq ft up until a few months ago! We just moved into a place almost double the size and I'm missing our small home!

@@oursimplestory Oh wow! My mom lives in 400sqft in the back portion of our lot, and I cannot even imagine 😳😂 Are your kids little? How was the sleeping situation?

@@maymayrays our kids our 4 (just turned a few weeks ago) and 1 (turning 2 soon)!! I did a home tour so you can check it out! Thankfully we did have a huge patio/balcony area that made our space feel a lot bigger! That and floor to ceiling windows!! Sleeping was fun lol - and not much of it happening on my end lol!

@@oursimplestory Aw - I just watched it! I can see why you miss that space 🖤 so much gorgeous light and you decorated beautifully. Yes, we have two large porches, as does my mom, and that makes all the difference. Haha - mom never sleeps until that third year, hang in there!! Mine are 7 and 9, and the literal out-growing of this place feels very real 😂😬 But we’ll hang on as long as we can because it’s our little home in the city and the location cannot be beat.

@@maymayrays aw thank you so much for watching it! :) Location is definitely key!! :) I would love to have a smallish/tinyish home with a veranda all around the entire home one day, nestled in the woods but close enough that we can bike into town! Thats the dream lol

Hi! Do you hang curtains high on a patio window even if the space doesn’t allow extra width for curtains? 💗

Good information. I hate the guessing game when you get to the store. Will it work or not. 😘😘

I have the biggest fear of starting over especially when I JUST spent a bunch a money on things that I quickly lost joy over. I hate wasting my money. But ever since I started watching your channel (this week), I really want to get rid of everything that either doesn't fit my space, doesn't make me happy or is no longer my style. One of my 2022 goals is to make my home a place I truly enjoy being in. 1000%!

Great professional video, thank you! Measure everything! Trying to organize and decorate our 800sf space is why I just started a UA-cam channel also - it’s such a different challenge from the bigger home I left in Texas.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO! I’m looking to move into a 220 sq ft apartment by myself this year. I have two questions:
    1. Do you suggest having bold, patterned curtains or neutral curtains? Having bold curtains draws the eyes to the windows, but could it make the space seem very busy?
    2. What do you think of overhead cupboards lining the room? Will it reduce the sense of space too much? Or will it help draw the eyes to the ceiling?
    Thank you very much!

Neutral curtains and like 50cm high hanging cupboards, hanging with the middle on 1/3 of the floor-ceiling hight.

Do what makes you HAPPY & makes sense for the space. For example I’m in 400 square foot studio with 2 full closets + a linen closet. There’s no reason for me to have extra storage- but I definitely need separation for the living space & sleeping space.

We really love our small home but need help with design in our eat in kitchen. We have an eat in area that has three small bay windows that I want to use a round table and bench seating area. Your small area ideas are great. Please share some ideas for dining seating in small areas
