Thank you for the presentation. A small doubt: Why bioguide in compromised sockets and mucograft in intact sockets in particular?

      Dear Paul Mathai
Thank you for your question. We might start with some clarification of our products before answering and diving deeper into the question itself:
Geistlich Bio-Gide® was developed as a collagen membrane for guided bone regeneration with the goal to be a temporary barrier between fibroblasts, osteoblasts and the bone filling material. Geistlich Mucograft® was developed as a collagen matrix for soft-tissue regeneration with the goal to support soft-tissue formation and wound healing.
We recommend using Geistlich Bio-Gide® (Shape) in compromised / defect extraction sockets. The definition of an intact extraction socket varies among experts and includes buccal bone defects of 0 to 50 %. The reason of using Geistlich Bio-Gide® (Shape) in compromised / defect extraction sockets is the same as for conventional Guided Bone Regeneration: Geistlich Bio-Gide® (Shape) is used as a barrier membrane to exclude soft-tissue and fibroblasts from the bone filling material (e.g. Geistlich Bio-Oss® (Collagen)) and to ensure undisturbed new bone formation. Geistlich Bio-Gide® (Shape) needs no further coverage and is known for uneventful wound healing with restoring the soft-tissues very nicely to provide later a functional keratinized tissue.
In intact extraction sockets with a complete buccal bone wall, the bone walls itself take over this part. This is the reason why we recommend to use of Geistlich Mucograft® Seal on top of the bone filler (e.g. Geistlich Bio-Oss® (Collagen)). Geistlich Mucograft® Seal is sealing the socket to prevent the bone filling material from dislocation and helps the soft-tissues to heal uneventfully on top of the socket. Furthermore, the use of Geistlich Mucograft® helps to regenerate keratinized tissue at the ridge to later ensure functionality of the soft-tissues at the restored site.
In both cases/both treatments require of course an appropriate post-surgery care and instruction of the patient.
We hope this answer helps you. If there are any questions left, feel free to come back to us again.
      Best Regards
      Geistlich Biomaterials
