e39 BMW M5 Interior Leather Restoration

  • I had a few weeks off, so decided to finally refresh my 2001 BMW M5 interior using the ‪@geist.leathercare‬ system. The interior was in pretty good shape, considering the 180,000 miles on the odometer, but at some point, it had been re-dyed with a crappy shiny paint job :(
    This had bothered me since day one of my ownership so I was excited to finally be able to do something about it.

    That moment when you put the airbag back in and run your hands up and down the wheel - i would totally do that too! Amazing job, that is amazing work, thank, thank, thank you !!!! I think you have saved me the cost of re-trimming my steering wheel when it just needs a clean and refinish.

    LOLing at leaving garage on Pilot Sports in winter! Did same w/ my M5 E39. Got out of garage, instantly stuck in snow 5 meters out and spent next 2 hours trying to get it back in without sliding into the door frame.

    • @maciejstalmach
      @maciejstalmach 3 роки тому

      You can swing them on snow in a subaru. BMW - no chance. I caused a traffic jam on my residential street trying to back into a 4m wide gate after driving 5m into the street and getting stuck. Only took 5 minutes to back in though LOL.

      @OtoGodfrey 3 роки тому

      @@maciejstalmach It was from 12 to 2am for me and I was worried I might have to give up leave it outside, blocking the other garages LOL. Eventually I woke up a neighbor and he got outta bed and came outside and helped me get it back in. I just wanted to see how the Michelin PS3 All Season work in snow. Surpise: They don't. Worthless tire that PS3 A/S, no good in summer, and worse in winter.

      @@OtoGodfrey Damn. Shoveling for 2 hrs sounds like a workout. Props to your neighbor. Definitely a harmless story to share with car guy buddies. Mine pretty much saved my life one occasion or at least prevented great bodily damage right in the nick of time. It's all good if you can share a glass of whisky afterwards.

    Just unplug the airbag ECU in the center console during the process. You can then turn on the car without the risk of it throwing a code.
    The Airbag light will be on during the time the ECU is not connected but no codes will be saved since the codes are saved on the ECU.
    That is how i always do it. I have 4 E39s and at one point had even more, swapping interior and exterior parts around like a madman.
    Fun fact: If the Airbag light never goes off : ECU not connected or no communication to ECU. If it goes of for a short second and comes straigt back on: you have a code.

    Just for future you can use battery from any drill or equivalent by directly using jumpers from battery pack to switch. Polarity only changes movement of motors. It’s how I move or remove seats when in salvage yards and tell if motors good or not. Excellent video

      @@AvianaAircraft go to a junkyard and get a set of interior trim. Then buy a carbon skinning kit for around a 100 bucks and make yourself a set of forged carbon trim. Its for only for looks but you did such an amazing transformation with the interior that the car deserves something better. I had wood over tan leather in a 530d and it looked good. Darker interiors look best with the brushed aluminum or carbon fibre trim. I still cant get enough of your interior though. Ive wanted one of these cars for a better part of 15 years and yours is beautiful. As long as you keep on top of maintenance it should last forever

      I think some of the supplies I use are more in their pro-only line, but but to get you started, I think the Colourlock Leather Fresh product line would be the easiest ( I used that on the steering wheel and interior panels) since it doesn't require topcoat or primer. In addition some leather filler and sanding blocks, as well as cleaning solvents would be helpful. You can find all of it at www.colourlock.com/
      You could use an airbrush, I think its easier, however, it will take quite a bit longer. I use this set: amzn.to/37gXlKf
      I use this HVLP gun: amzn.to/3q15NGx but have also used the Harbor Freight variety with decent success.

    What is that bracket on the floor attached to the side of the passenger footwell at 1:05? Is it a water bottle holder? Where can I get one of those?

    Just found your channel and after this video, definitely subscribed. I’d love to do this to my black interior e46. Would you be kind enough to post links to the different products you used for all this in the video description? Would really help this DIY guy tackle such a project. Do you have videos on your preferred tools to leather/interior work? I’d love to learn more about mixes for spraying and what type of airbrush guns the experts prefer. Huge thank you.

      First off, thanks for subscribing! Have you found this playlist yet? ua-cam.com/play/PLAYm4FlnXrjwieqhrnk4h57z7P61FFx7x.html
      Those are great video suggestions for future content. I will keep them in mind, but to get you started, I think the Colourlock Leather Fresh product line would be the easiest ( I used that on the steering wheel and interior panels) since it doesn't require topcoat or primer.

      @@AvianaAircraft I appreciate the reply. I'll definitely check out that playlist. Colourlock seems to have a number of neat products. The color matching tool to get paint codes is particularly neat. Can it also specify Pantone codes?

    • @AvianaAircraft
      @AvianaAircraft  3 роки тому

      It reads in LAB and cross matches that to the corresponding Colourlock recipe. You could probably find a online converter to go LAB to Pantone.

    I haven't heard of colourlock, but the results look very good. Do you have any opinion on the Leatherique rejuvenation kit? That's what I plan on doing to my e39 m5, but I don't think it has any paint on it like yours. Would just like to make sure the leather is soft

      I did the leatherique thing back when I first got the car about 10 years ago. Was not impressed, and now I know better. There is a narrow window of problems that leatherique may fix, but this is a wholly different service.

    Do you have any idea how long ago was the previous paint correction done? And how long you expect this one to last? Because I had bad experience with some similar work some time ago, didn't last a year and flaked off. IMO its not realistic to say treat the leather every 3 months or it will last only a year because its too much work for very little result. Thanks for the video.

    • @AvianaAircraft
      @AvianaAircraft  3 роки тому +1

      So this isn't a daily driver of mine, so it won't be a good durability case study. If you have flaking and pealing, generally that points to either poor surface prep, or the paint was applied too thick. In many cases when dealing with colors other than black, when folks can't get the color match right, they end up using way more paint than they need to, which then looks like crap and is more prone to pealing off.
