How To Time A Fairbanks Morse D

- This engine was found in a junk pile in a shed that had been building for about thirty years. the condenser and points were cleaned and the engine ran. but it ran very hot and that was because the mag was stuck with tar that ran off the coil to the rotor. i had to use an acidic chemical(WD-40) then i had to clean the mag off with dielectric cleaner. then i had to reset the timing on the engine. once i got this figured out a new plug (Autolite 3076) ,plug wire ,and exhaust was put on.

Young man…your determination is most impressive and is equaled by your obvious knowledge of the internal combustion engine.
Good video!!!! I agree with most of comments. Recheck timing. May be 180 out
Clean check ball in tank.
You'll find it. I like your knowledge and willingness to learn!!!!!! 🙂
Clean your check valve in the tank. Then double check your timing. Good luck 👍!
I did not hear any clicking when you were spinning the magneto. I would assume something like this would have an "impulse" magneto. The click should be the trigger release mechanism. It makes the magnets spin momentarily very fast (impulse) past the coils to make a quick burst of electricity. Not hearing the click might mean it is not an impulse mag or the impulse part of the mechanism is not working. This would make for hard starting for sure. Something to check anyhow.
YOUR FIRST BACK FIRE MAKES ME THINK THAT YOU HAVE THE TIMING 180 DEGREES OUT OF PHASE.
Nice engines! Yeah... Fairbanks Morse engines tend to be harder to start than some of the other manufacturers of that time.
Mine is giving me same problem not wanting to start it was running 2 years ago
good afternoon could you give me information about this engine so that I can start to restore it and be able to evaluate what are the missing ones that it has
Did you get the hot mag sorted out?
get some copper core wire. that new resistor stuff isnt good for these old mags
Using easy start will only make it harder to start in the future
Did you get the hot mag sorted out?
