Building Log Cabin Roof Alone in Forest of Sweden

- My Story:
When I graduated high school I sought a big challenge in life. To alone, with only simple hand tools and raw power, build my own traditional off grid log cabin by hand from the materials of the Swedish forest. I film everything myself and edit these videos so you can follow my journey and hopefully learn as I do. I have no earlier experience in any of this, just a visualization of what I want to achieve and willpower to learn and improve everything necessary. So I enjoy reading good advice in the comments. Enjoy!

Same here. The videos help my brain stop over thinking and puts me in the right frame of mind. Once the video is over im ready to sleep
I suffer from anxiety and his videos help me relax and sleep I guess is all the sounds and the calm of him not talking.
Same. They’re just relaxing and calming and encouraging.

I admire your work ethic. I built a log cabin a few years back. 16'x20' with an 8' overhanging loft in the front. I used tractors, chainblocks wheelbarrows, chainsaws and battery powered tools. Harvested all the logs of my farm and hand peeled them with a drawknife and ice chipper. Bought all the lumber and used recycled materials for doors and windows. Picked up some nice second hand tin for the roof and used soffit from another project (I built my own house). It might've been due to time restraints and having two very young kids but I couldnt imagine tackling this project with an axe, a hammer and freaking handsaw. Well done man, well done...
How long did everything take with the power tools and machinery?
@@stevens1-o7s id guess around 2-6months but im not this guy so just a grain of salt :/

The cabin is looking splendid, love the hair and of course the hats, a definite pluse. Axe skills are amazing to me. The wild life is great. Thanks for another delightful video. Bye for now
For real tho. His skill with an axe is masterful. Also his usage of those temporary boards for footing it really smart.

Here's the deal, I'm Canadian, and when it comes to building structures that need insulation, well then .... THAT IS A MAJOR PRIORITY HERE IN CANADA. That said young man, from all the log cabin building videos here on UA-cam, you are the ONLY builder that has done it right when it comes to the roof!
It's incredible that others think that 2-inches of roof insulation will be enough in the middle of winter, along with others who are incorrectly insulation their roofs with leaky vapour barriers and insufficient R-Value insulation! It just blows my mind to no end !!!
Some of these structure are so well solidly built, but then when it come to insulation the roofs, it's a loss-of-heat and moisture-catastrophe yet to happen! I just do not get it that how can someone put their hearts and souls into proudly building a structure.....AND TOTALLY FAIL IN SUPER CRITICAL FULL-FLOW ROOF VENTING DUCT WORK, ABSOLUTELY SEALED VAPOUR BARRIER PROTECTION AND EXTREME R-VALUE INSULATION GUIDELINES.
That said son .... you are truly a MASTER by doing your 'homework' and effectively but most critically CORRECTLY build your roof within properly engineered blueprint guidelines! I personally endorse and confirm that your cabin will outlast and outperform most of the failed builds here on YT. The proof will definitely show the failures once condensation and overly perpetual heat loss factors kick in!
Congratulations son .... I would hire you in a heartbeat !!!
Swedes are crazy about insulation of our houses, we see iciciles forming on the roof we shake our heads and rethink.
And from a Hoser at the north tip of Lake Superior I agree !!!
I want to grammar nazi you so hard rn...
Canada and Sweden are about the same distance from the equator so we share a lot of the same building techniques as well as wildlife and nature
Yeah some modern houses cheap out on insulation. I got cold a couple of nights ago. At my parents house, I can't turn off the heat for two days when it's -40 and be fine. I have to turn on my heater at the end of September :/
There is no aspect of human endeavour that cannot be improved upon by the introduction of a cat, especially a ginger one.

Possibly one of the most beautiful documentaries I have seen yet on this planet. Simply building a log cabin by a young man. This would be a dream come true for me if I were young again. It has brought me great peace and I am going to try to do it myself. Thank you Erik. I would like to donate to your cause. This is what young men need to do all over the world to break the insane addiction to all this technology. Being outside in the fresh air in a beautiful forest. Euphoria!
Amen!

Truly amazing journey you are on. Lots of sweat and pains did your journey gave you. I know from own experience. But the satisfaction, the hours of deep meditation during work and the pure joy of making something in a place to die for.
It can only be experienced by the maker it self. Thank you for giving a glimps of all the work.
Hey Eric....just out of curiosity were you cleaning the logs just to be cleaning them or was there another reason for doing that? I can't wait to see the cabin when it's finished. You're doing an amazing job!
It makes the logs brighter and cleaner after a few days 29:33. Also protects a little. It is a soap called "grönsåpa" in Swedish, made from pine oil. Instead of sanding the logs inside (modern technic) you can use this soap for same effect and keep the natural shape of the logs.
I wish I would have filmed a before and after shot.
@@ErikGrankvist thanks for answering my question. I've been watching your videos on the cabin over the past months . To be as young as you are and to take on such a project says alot about you. It's such a beautiful landscape. It must be an amazing place to live. I live in Florida so I'm just use to beaches and Pine trees...lol. Anyway thanks again for answering my question
Hey Eric...are you gonna make your own windows are just buy some pre-made that'll fit in the opening? And what kind of floor are you gonna put down? I hope you don't mind me asking questions.
'Grönsåpa' or in finnish 'mäntysuopa' was invented by Alfons Hellström in 1913 while working for Wood industry company Enso-Gutzeit Oy. It's is made from side products of paper industry
@@martinlehtonen very interesting. Thanks ;-)

2:42 nothing is impossible with time
.... Thank you for such beautiful video (again), Erik :)
With no previous experience, you sure put a lot of craftsmanship into the cutting and fitting of every piece of wood and log. So you either read how to do that, or you have a talent beyond even your own ideas. One thing for sure, that log cabin will be there for the ages... Solid in design and quality technique. Thumbs Up!
This is what the content on UA-cam is ment to be
Not like not some kid who is always shouting freeze and is clickbait
But you are wholesome educational fun and inspiring

Is that your cat at 26:00?
Today, "slowly" is almost like swearing in church, but when you work slowly, things turn out right and your soul becomes content. The house took a year to build and will stand for hundreds of years.
Patience pays off. Turtle vs Hare tale.
True
You're such a hard worker, I remember you pulling the logs out of the forest by hand. It must be great to wake up in a beautiful cabin that you are building yourself. Well done
well, the dog and the cat did supervise him.
Lovely to see a young man working on a project like this. It gives me hope that my daughters will be lucky enough to find a partner like him. There is hope. Lol

Hi. very interesting video, I'm doing the journey of living in the forest alone, growing vegetables, raising fish, raising chickens.... living in harmony with beautiful nature
The mix between work and the views of nature is the reason why I subscribed when you first started bringing down the stones for the foundation. Blessings from New Orleans.
I like this videos a lot. What else to look for: a very handsome young man building an extremely beautiful cabin by hand in the middle of Scandinavian nature! Thnx Erik, also for the fact you take your time to show what a patient effort you make. I had many relaxing hours looking and hope you will not be ready soon. Ha det meget bra, vi sier på norsk.
It always makes my day so much brighter when I see a new upload. It gives me great joy to see how far you have come making this cabin, makes me feel like I could do somthing just as ambitious in my life.
Hello Erik - I thoroughly enjoy your videos and I happy to say I have been inspired to build my own log cabin. Not as big as yours, only 12 feet x 16 feet but it will meet my needs. I was curious what the wash you were using to clean the logs inside was? Is it a chemical or just a soap & water wash?
I am curious about that as well.
Thank you so much for making these videos.
It is very kind of you to share this sense of solitude with the world. Many if us dream of this but can never find, or take advantage of, the opportunity. So you have my gratitude for being generous enough to let us tag along.
Why did you scrub down the interior walls? Was it for asthetic purposes or something else such as rot prevention?
It's cleaning. Most probably a chlorine solution. It leaves the wood as new.
Its sap. Makes the wood brighter and preserves it.
@@carlosdelascuevas6140 Chlorine!! Of course it wasn't! It's the most damaging to nature and wildlife you can pour in.
@@60plus01 It's "såpa" a kind of mild soap from the old days, and water.

Well done young man. I was impressed with how he took care of his tools and used them well. A making of a master craftsman. I do think if he applies this focus to his future life all will be well with him. Old time Spirit as my sister says.
What's the purpose of removing the shavings underneath the floor?
Fire risk perhaps?
It would've turn into compost, and would've added heat and humidity to the cabin. Also, mold and worms.

Any father would love to have a child like that, this boy is a blessing.
Care to expand on that?! Why wouldn’t a father love to have a child that was *not* like that, etc?!
Undeniably, any parent would be proud of a child like this. Hardworking, determined, independent. To do such a project successfully is only possible if you have certain great qualities. You wouldn’t love for your child to be lazy and useless would you?
He's a hard worker and his work is good, can't knock it, but he doesn't work in an optimum way.
Taking one fork load of wood scrapings and walking them across the joists was so inefficient and a waste of energy. No idea why you'd clear the space that way.
So he could spread it evenly across the forest, to nourish the forest floor, not harm it.
Wauw dit is prachtig! Observing your work really makes me think along with every hard work's step. Very relaxing. And sometimes I wonder, why can I smell the wood and forest while watching :)
Hi Erik. Mark here in California. I am leaving in 2 days to start on site planning for my first cabin build. 95 acres with 15 of it on the Klamath river with a class 2 stream running through it. I am planning on buying a wood mill but I love so much of your design. I have now in a couple days watched almost all your videos.
I didn't see if you anchored your house so it can't shift or hop off foundation in an earthquake. It can be easily done after the building start...an "earthquake retrofit" we call it here.
Thank you for sharing and I hope to be able to do as well.
