    I bought one in the 70's. It had a four inch barrel. I only fired one box of ammo through it. Thought my hand was broken. Sold it!

    I enjoyed the video. I bought my S&W Model 29 Silhouette in January 1992.....the one with the 10 5/8" barrel. I believe production was stopped in December 1991.....so I got one of the last ones. I have a few guns, and I spent quite a bit of time in the Army. This is still my favorite. I understand your concern with heart surgery, blood thinners, and firing this thing. I had the same concern as I've had significant cardiac surgery and am on Warfarin with an INR between 3.0 and 3.5. That's thin. Last month at the range, I put 80 magnum rounds through mine. Yeah, my hands were sore that evening, but no significant bruising of note. Don't let that hold you back. I'll say that the shotguns I fired left much more of a mark (bruise) than the 44 did. Enjoy!

    Pre 29 was first 44 mag then the 29 no dash a so on I have a dash 3 ,5 ,6 and 9 proformance hunter and looking for 29-2 ,8 3/8 barrel . Factory issued 29s dash 3 forward were not pinned and reassessed but you could order it as such .I had a dash 4 pinned and reassessed it was 4 inch for me that is too short but I have a 629 -6 that is 3 inches . The 629 is stainless steel there are many different types of S&W 44 mag ,s that is my favorite handgun caliber but my pride is a no dash 686 357 mag 4 inches I have many S&W,s my favorite package is target hammer and target trigger pinned and reassessed .now I reload so it is more likely to have ammo I can load it up or down depending on what I need .It took me 40 years to get my collection and aquire knowledge and experience to have this much fun target shooting thanks

    That's a nice piece of heat. NOT cheap at all. I found a S&W 686, 8/38 and I love it.

    I own the 629-3 with 8 3/8 in barrel with full underlug and is quite heavy but manages recoil nicely with that added weight !!! It was one of the most accurate revolvers that left the Smith&Wesson factory that shot an 1 7/8 in. grouping at 50 yards benchrest test with the open sights no scope envolved in that test !!! Mine came with the pachmayr grips as well as the nice wood grips and 4 other front posts sights !!!! I still have it with less than 50 rounds fired thru it in mint condition with box and paper work and a custom alloy finish on it to boot !!!

    This is a great revolver and I shoot it often. I mostly shoot a light special, easy on the recoil and quick to stay on target. My wife has shot magnum loads with this revolver and did quite well. At 6'5" I carry this revolver quite often in a hip holster with no problem concealed under my shirt. I shoot this revolver quite accurate with the 6 1/2" barrel, much better than with the 4" model...just a very fine revolver!

    Hi Matt, My Dad had a couple of those. He was an Collector. I used to shoot a Thompson Center and I had alot of barrels for it. And, I had several Hand Cannon Jones barrels too. 1- 7mm Mag, 1 375 JDJ, & a couple more of them. I personally knew JD Jones back in the late 70's & all though the 80's when I was doing a lot of pistol hunting.

    That is a robust round, it hammered my hand at first. A range officer recommended I ease into it with 44Special rounds first, then alternate with 44mag. rounds. Keep up the great videos, I always learn something new from your videos. Thanks.

      The first 44 I shot had a hogue rubber grip and I was really surprised the recoil wasn't too bad.

    I like the .44 magnum. I also like the Ruger Super Blackhawk. Handles the recoil better and a good one is extremely accurate.

    Remington built the round, Smith & Wesson built the pistol, all at the comments and behest of Elmer Keith who kept experimenting with the .44 special pushing the edges of the loading data to new heights. Barrels that are not pinned are threaded with no pin. They are NOT a "press fit." Dirty Harry used a 6" .44 Magnum, never a 8-3/8" version. I have a plethora of these and can tell you that the action on everything after the 29-2 does not feel the same as the 29-2 and before. There actually was a time when Smith took great pains to send out a really smooth firearm with a silky action. Not like today where these revolvers are gritty and have "clinton locks" on them. They are disgraceful.

      You better contact the NRA museum in Arlington and tell them that
      the 8 3/8" barrel pistol that was presented to them is just a lie. Also
      a 6 barrel was not available or even cataloged. It was a 6 1/2". Only
      later Model 29-3 and on, could one get a non cataloged barrel length.
      The 5 or 6 inch could be had, if you knew some one. Your credibility
      is zero!

    I just bought a beautiful 29-3. I took it to the range and fired six rounds of Winchester 240 grain magnums. Upon my attempt to eject the spent cartridges, they would not eject. I had to use a small punch and hammer to drive the cartridges out from the cylinder. I did shoot some lead LRNFP 240gr mag reloads through the gun without a problem, but they were much lighter loads. It appears that the pressure from these very hot loads can expand the spent cartridge so much that it becomes impossible to use the ejector. Can you expand on your experience and solution to this problem? BTW, I have also had the same problem with my Blackhawk, so I am inclined to suspect the ammunition. Thank you for all your videos!!!!

    That is one beautiful weapon. The firearm that is my favorite is a Ruger GP100. Although it does not kick like a 44 magnum, I have had to go back to shooting .38 Specials because I am also on blood thinners. I did not have a bad heart, but a bad leg and had to have 3 stents put into my right leg (B"H we caught it just weeks before the leg got too bad and would have required amputation). Once the blood gets thick again I will be shooting .357 magnums. I am happy to shoot lighter loads and be able to walk up to the shooting bench instead of shooting heavy loads and being wheeled up to the bench :-)

      @personaldefenseandfirearme1046  7 років тому +1

      I'm glad they found it before it was too late. With regard to blood thinners and recoil, that's in unknown territory. I haven't found any documentation on it. On the day I go to the range with a 9mm, I'll probably fire 5-10 rounds, and then walk away and see if bruising develops. If not, great! If so.. then at least I know. But no long guns for quite a while!

    My 629 snub nose humbled me and got me shooting. I had always assumed since I could hit pretty well with dad's 22 that it would apply to any gun. Yes that did cut my hand up, so blood thinners and 44 mags, might be a bad idea. Still good with a 22, not bad with the 9mm or 40cal. The 45 could use some improvement. I did get it from a fellow from Alaska, who used it for bear. If I'm carrying that in the back country, I hope I run into a special bear. I'm afraid, with my aim, a magnum bear just might win.

    • @personaldefenseandfirearme1046
      @personaldefenseandfirearme1046  7 років тому

      Yes, you're correct about blood thinners and .44 magnum not being a good combination. I won't be shooting it any time soon! You're also right about how a larger caliber can humble you compared to a .22LR. But practice makes perfect. Thanks for watching!

    Can I find a dependable gun for around $250, but under $300? Something for someone that's a beginner when it comes to owning a hand gun. I am in the process of getting my concealed carry permit and I am looking for a hand gun that's easy, safe and effective to that I could keep with me mostly in my home for protection, but sometimes on my person.

      Yes! You should check out the Walther PPX in 40SW or 9mm but CDNN only has the 40SW in stock at this time and I am not sure if they will get them back. I have 2 of the PPX both in 40. I bought one when I saw advertise for 299 and I figured give it a try if I do not like it I can sell it for the same amount and not have an issue. Well I really like the trigger and hammer system which when you rack the pistol to chamber a round the hammer is cocked in a 1/3 to 1/2 of the way taking about half of the trigger pull out and the pistol will fire with a Very Crisp and clean trigger. The pistol comes with 2 mags and extra mags are about 25 dollars not bad for a Walther. When I took the pistol out for the first time my wife was with me and she tried it and liked it too so I ordered her one too. She normally carries a Gen 4 Glock 19 but that is a range and home defense gun. I am big fan of Sigs, 1911s, Glocks and the PPX was my first Walther and it was a barging then and still is. Here is the link:
      www.cdnnsports.com/walther-ppx-m1-40s-w-cerakote-black.html?___SID=U#.WYrDkVF96Uk
      If this is going to be your first CCW pistol the PPX will give you a solid service life.
      Hope this helps you if you have any additional questions send me a message.
      P.S. my PPX has about 800 rds thru it and I have had ZERO malfunctions.

      I like bluing, especially when it's done right. Stainless is hard to beat in harsher environments, though.

      My service revolver was carried on and off duty for 20 yrs . I bought it from gun shop after deputy sold it after his dept went to Sig. That deputy used it for 10 yrs. There is no wear on the stainless steel. I even won a plaque for 1st place of shooting out of 120 guys. BY the way the deputy also won award for firing the same weapon before me. I'm glad it was SS wearing it steady daily.
