Smith and Wesson Model 29 - 4 inch versus 8 inch

  • I did some reloading and shooting with my Model 29's. I wanted to see how much difference in velocity there was between a 4 inch and a 8 inch barrel. After several tries, I was able to catch a 240 grain XTP bullet and did a little more shooting. My camera battery was fully charged when I started but decided to die anyway. Thanks for Watching.

Smith & Wesson should've never stopped making the 29-2's.
    THAT is revolver perfection!!❤👍

    I have an 8 3/8, 6.5 in blue. 4” in nickel and a 629 no dash 8 3/8.
    Love the pinned and recessed.
I guess I’m after a 4” blue and stainless to round off the collection. Maybe a nickel 6.5
I guess I want all of them! OCD collector mindset.
    Beautiful craftsmanship

Very nice pair of N frames. I lucked into a 6.5 29-2 some years ago, and I'm not sure why i haven't picked up an 8 3/8 and 4". I will say the 6.5 balances about perfect.

Wow the blueing on those is great for as old as they are. I had to sell my 44 years ago, now I have the yerning for a Taurus Raging Hunter. Love those wheel guns. Very nice.

Excellent video brother, Nothing else like the iconic 29 love all of mine. 4 inch is always fun. Been looking at getting some enforcer to try currently use 2400

4” is so handy but long 44’s are very fun. The funny thing was back when hunting gun shows the long ones where cheaper and harder to sell vs the Dirty Harry model. 😂 📺

Yep, I like shooting the longer barrel. The shorter one is handy and the 6 inch models are scarce and expensive. Darn that Harry Callahan.

These chrono results are quite good out of the 4 inch. I fed a max charge of Enforcer with 240 plated, and out of a 6 inch 29-3 i barely touched the 1300 fps. I think these plated slugs i have here are just too slim to give a good seal. Even my powder coated cast slugs did a better job. The XTPs would be even better from what i see here, but i am way too stingy to get those.

The four inch is a handy size but it is handful with stout loads. They are great guns. Thanks for the comment.

I have a 8”44 with a scope on it. Got it cheap. I was surprised how accurate it was especially with me shooting it. I’m hoping to get a shorter wheel gun some time in my future. Definitely got some nice pistols there

44 mag performance is always optimized in the longer barrel.

@@bustabass9025 True, but the 4 inch is much easier to carry around all day, especially getting in and out of a vehicle. It’s just a better packing pistol than a longer barrel version, and the deer can’t tell a bit of difference between being shot with a 4 inch version than a 83/8 version.

All good points. But the deer won't have anything to worry about, if the bullet loses terminal velocity before it gets to him depending on the distance between you and the deer. That's what optimization means.

@@bustabass9025 I’ve shot over 10 deer with my 4 inch 629 anywhere from 15 yards out to 80 yards. None of them could tell the difference , all one shot kills.

Never said you couldn't kill a deer with the shorter barrel, or even 10 for that matter.
