@@FloraandNote The Black Thorn mother tree in Malaysia originated in Penang, grown from a seed brought back from Thailand who then cultivated and hybridized the variety with a local Malaysian durian. So you could say half of it strain from Thailand descent as well.
Rice? Never done that, as for us in Kelantan, we prefer sticky rice with coconut milk and fresh bitter durian, well ..most like sweet durian. Come over!..it's durian season now.
well, i enjoy pulut (sticky rice) durian, and some of my family members have durian with regular white rice. As for me, it's either with sticky rice, or thai fragrant rice at least. Guess it's more enjoyable compared with consuming durians by itself alone.
Growing up, Ive had durian with rice mixed with some salted water. At that tme, the quality of durians were inconsistent.. buy 5 durians and 4 will have worms, are overripe or have rockhard or tasteless flesh. So eating this way help large low income families to stretch out the meagre quantity of durian flesh. Im told that Kelantanese eat durian or fermented durian with budu (combined with lime juice, sliced chili and onions) as a condiment to a rice meal. Maybe for the same abovementioned reason.
I have tasted durian from Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia. My personal opinion is that durian from Malaysia land is the best in terms of taste and choices.
I just came back from bangkok, tried Monthong! I am not a regular Durian consumer in Malaysia.. I eat durian outside of its season even though its more expensive coz I cant wait for its Season (usually June - August). 😂 i Agree with you guys.. Monthong is more forgiving to those who wanted to try for the 1st time. It is tasty on its own way, smell doesnt stick on your mouth for too strong and too long.. The taste is similar to a Good Kampung Durian however the texture is totally different.. Some malaysian just arent fair commenting that Monthong are tasteless.. hahaha.. for me, you guys described it best especially Flora and TK. Note seems like he is still digesting and contemplating from the Long argued Malaysia vs Thai Durian.. 😅 But he has a fair point too.. Thanks for the Vid Guys!
As a Thai, I also do like Musang King durian from Malaysia, too. I disagree with you guys that Thailand has less varieties of durian than Malaysia. Monthong durian may be the easiest to grow and it gives a plenty of fruits comparing to the other types of durian. There's a lot more varieties of durian in Thailand (at least 100 if classifying them in details). My father grows durian trees as his hobby after his retirement, 1 or 2 durian tree(s) from each type, and he has around 20 types including Musang King. We found that Monthong is the easiest one to grow and taking care of the tree. They start giving fruits after 3 years of plantation while the others not. We're waiting for Kan-yao, Puang manee, Nok Yip, Kop Chai-nam, Longlap-lae and a lot more durian fruits from our trees.
We accept that Thai durians are harvested before they ripe. This is the problem that Thai people blame the farmers as well. But the truth is - the farmers aren't harvest durian fruits themselves. The buyers (especially the Chinese buyers) will come to the farm and harvest the fruits without caring the ripeness. I have many relatives who have durian trees. They always give us durian fruits so I know the real taste of perfectly ripe Thai durian (not overripe ones), it way better than durian that you buy in the market. FYI, Thai people call overripe durian as 'pla-ra' (northeastern Thai and Laos style fermented fish). Not many of Thai people prefer overripe durian while most of the Chinese love them and the westerners who try durian for the first time got overripe ones, too. That's why we always see their funny reaction. My father selected to grow a Musang King durian tree himself hopefully to try perfectly ripe Musang King durian b/c I found only overripe (for me) Musang King in Malaysia and Singapore.
monthong is hybrid varian same like Musang king but if u take unripe Musang king from tree it will remain unripe then rotten compare to monthong that trew was lab genetics tree that y everything was changed
In Malaysia Durian is not just a fruit but a culture, back in the old days in every Malay and also Chinese Kampung there will be a Durian feast when the Durian seasons is coming. I still remember when Durian season came my grandad will sleep for weeks at the Durian orchid to wait for the Durian to fall of the tree and fend of Elephants and Tiger and wild animal from eating it. YES in Malaysia TIGER and ELEPHANTS LOVE DURIAN and especially in the Northern and East Coast state tiger and elephant will come to villagers Durian orchid to steal Durian, they love Durian so much just like the human in Malaysia. When Durian season came every village will have a picnic at the Durian orchard and all relative from all over Malaysia will come back to their hometown and eat so many Durian and Durian based food. Its Durian maniac in Malaysia when the season comes.
My colleague's family has a few trees at the kampung. So many baskets of durians were harvested and no one to eat. So all relatives and cousins were invited. She even packed some to the office using tupperware. We quickly eat it to hide the smell. Lol. But it was kampung durian. Nice too.
Yes, remember my grandparents gathering all relatives to have feast in orchard and have funs, and we stay overnight, only the boys....😅😊 Girls will go back home after feast.... memories..
durian from both country are good. its only a cultural difference of eating durian. Thai prefer slightly hard durian & they pick durian from tree meanwhile, Malaysian prefer soft ripe durian & we dont pick from tree, we wait until the durian naturally drop from tree. so both durian are good ,just cultural different & personal preferences. both Thailand and Malaysia has their own variety.
The people who will decide who durian is better are other nationalities, not Malaysians, who say Malaysian durians are better than Thai durians. Only Malaysian people say this, everyone in the world knows that Thai durian is the number 1 in the world.
It's funny how you say that Thai prefer slightly hard durian is something you should know. Thai durian has everything you want. Do you want hard, soft or mushy up to you
We also got another class of durian we call as durian kampung "village durian". It is basically a mixed of different types of durian from our rural areas. Back then no one knows what type of durian they planted, they only know the results once they harvested the fruit. So these unknown type of durian collectively called as "village durian". The price usually cheaper as the quality varies from fruit to fruit. But some of it actually on par with the famous durian variety like XO and musang king.
Yes. I'm lucky because my village not many new varieties. Only kampung durians. We know which trees are the very good ones. Our grandfathers grew them. I am now sixty four years old.
It's really, to each their own. Even as Malaysian, when people here mostly said Musang King is the best, I remember the best one I had was only a durian kampung (common variant, found easily in any villages in Malaysia). I never turned back to those premium durians no more. Except maybe when people pay them for me lol..
@Flora and Note - OMG salivating watching you savouring all those different types of durian. Love durians Heaven! TK is a good guide/friend He is so informative and knowledgeble.👌👍. Note most of us who take rice with durian eat it by mixing salty warm water, durians and rice. Or opt salty water for santan (coconut milk with pinch of salt). Thank you for coming to Malaysia❤
In the US in southern states, we sprinkle salt on our fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, it makes it taste sweeter! However, I’m a supertaster(highly sensitive) and anything bitter I cannot eat or I can’t taste much else for about 3 or 4 days even a week! So a bitter aftertaste I won’t do. I DO want to try once at least but no bitter please. 🙏🏻❤️
Thanks for coming and enjoying...we are hoping you will return soon as well, believe more to see/do, ie: homestay, farms, trekking, ...etc, and planning around some of Malaysia's big festive seasons to try more cultural food.
You can dissolve a pinch of salt in drinking water and pour a little bit into the rice bowl before you eat them with durian. That's how I learnt to eat durian with rice long time ago. Nowadays I just prefer to eat durian as is.
As a neutral foreigner who tried Malaysian durian first (I didn't hate it but I didn't really like it), I thought durian in Thailand would be the same so I never even thought about touching it. But I did notice that Thai durian doesn't really smell, and last week my family bought a durian while we were in Thailand and to my surprise it was ABSOLUTELY tasty! It was firm but a little soft on the inside and it was very fruity with a taste of 'freshness' (as opposed to Malaysian varieties lacking that refreshing fruity quality, with a taste that feels more fermented and mushy, with an aftertaste which I can only describe as 'onion-y'). I can definitely see how hardcore durian fans might prefer Malaysian varieties because it's more of an acquired taste, since foods that require acquired tastes tend to me more addictive. But like I said, as a neutral who doesn't really eat durian much, I would say the Thai variety is much more palatable.
Personally I like sweet durians more than the bitter ones so it's a matter of preference or acquired taste. You might want to ask a local Malaysian which variety is sweet with the least bitter taste to get that fruity fresh taste. We do have those. It's definitely good option for newbies. The more bitter taste is for hardcore enthusiasts or adults who prefer bitter coffee. My family love the bitter taste but I always go for the sweet ones if any. Just last night my bro brought back a few varieties and I ate each one but more focused on the sweet ones.😂
Thai durian....it's good for you as a beginner because it less smell and light taste. Malaysian... It's a next level... For the durian lovers 😊 I love both.
My favourite is the kampung variety from Kampong Pangsun, Hulu Langat, Selangor. Look out for Pak Din. He's the boss. Ask him for the best durian in his Kampong. No special accorded variety. Just by word of mouth passed down by generations.
Pretty fair comment from Flora and Note. Malaysians will forever love their local durians and vice versa ...go hunt down many more local desserts and food
In my childhood days, around late 80s, there is durian that we called it Durian Gempita Alam because when the Durian is fall from the tree (my village in Perak), the sound is like bomb. The taste was buttery and sweet. Uncomparable with today's durian. Sweet memory for me.
I don't know if anybody covered this in the comments. I didn't read all the comments. 1. Drink plain water (num plau) from the shell to refrain from getting heaty from eating to much durian. 2. Wash you hands from water also filled into the durian shell to get rid of durian smell from your hands. I luvvvvvvv durian.
As a westerner I’ve never tried durian but this may make me curious enough to try it , also how did you come across TK ? He looks like good fun to have new food experiences with. Love your videos keep going 😀
interesting... durian is not very popular here in Canada and I am not sure which species or type is available in my local supermarket here. I have never had it... was always put off by the smell. But after seeing this... I will give it a shot.
Probably Thai's durian since when it comes to volume, Thai beat Malaysia by miles. We're talking 94% market domination by Thai. Malaysia simply doesn't produce that much.
Thai durian also taste better when they're truly rip and fall but then there is a risk of typhoon come in and make them fall of the tree and become worthless that's why most Thailand durian is harvested not in their best condition possible. Still if you love it creamy and pungent then musan king is your goes to but if you like it more lite ,easy and most value on your money then Thai Mhontong is the best choice
Oh my gosh, that’s a lot of durian! So many different ways to eat it. I didn’t get to taste any Durian when I visited Thailand because I wasn’t adventurous enough. All the signs in the hotel rooms about no durian allowed scared me 😂
Glad u guys enjoy our durian! Next round of durian feast/buffet then u will fall in love with Malaysian durian 😛 Whenever I visited Bangkok, durian chips is a must as souvenirs snacks to be brought home!
Its a version of lauk tempoyak ikan bilis. My friend dont like the taste of tempoyak, so she eat it your way. I sometime eat fresh durian as a creamy condiment with my rice meal. Quite similar to Pakistanis adding yogurt to their plain rice meals.
You guys got the best food guide in TK. Look at the size of his tummy. I'm surprised you didn't try the black thorn durian. It's actually a mutated version of the Monthong.
10:32 yes you can eat durian with rice. in Northern Malay tradition, we add one more ingredient, air garam(salted water) or salted coconut milk with durian and rice. it will taste best!
eat the whole seed, scoop everything from the seed while its in your mouth. thats the best way to get full experience or taste of durian. never have a small bite, because it will not have the full bodied...
To eat with rice, some state add more sweet things. Like palm sugar or just sugar. Some cultures like from Perak, will add salty things, ikan masin, ikan pekasam or just fried fish and chicken. It's a balance between sweet and salty.
Nice video.... Monthong also good with thick meat and less smelly... Malaysia clon durian got more than 120 varieties with name starting with D1- D199 ... If you are hardcore durian lover... You should try all of this varieties... Some really hard to find at durian stalls....and Some only can be found once a year...
The best durian in my opinion : 1. Musang King - Malaysia 2. Super tembaga - Indonesia 3. Black thorn - Malaysia 4. Kanyao - Thailand 5. Tekka - Malaysia 6. Bawor - Indonesia 7. Chanee - Thailand
Malaysian durian are the best because they ripe naturally and fall from the tree. Thailand and Indonesia usually pluck before they ripe.. thats make the different
Hey there...just to share. If you're eating durian with rice, it's best if you can add in some warm salt water and perhaps if you want to add some sugar also it will taste good though. Take care
the next level would be fermented durian with sambal budu mixed with rice, mostly popular along the east coast in kelantan. if you find a restaurant that has sambal tempoyak(fermented durian) or budu durian have a go with rice. I'm personally a fan. also, I like the tekka variant of durian alongside musang king, and if you like pure sweetness D24 is the go to.
Tourists should try the wild durians in East Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak) whereby the flesh itself not only comes in yellow, but orange and red colors as well. The durians grow around the ground level, rather than above the trees. The taste is different as well. More earthy and peanut 🥜 kind of scent, fragrance or flavor to it😊. If one knows how to eat durian with rice 🍚, then one ☝️ is surely more local than the ordinary locals in Malaysia. As it’s the old and traditional way of eating durian for the older generations or village people in Malaysia back in the days and even so, not the general population practice. It’s a minority tradition or culture here in Malaysia😊 Quality of durians in Malaysia are generally better than the rest of the world due to geographical factors and the way they are grown and cultivated. Due to its variety, people tend to eat the types of durian based on the variety of taste, texture, flavor and scent/fragrance. So it’s about self-preferences or self-gratifications rather than what most people choose to. Pricing of durians are not important as it’s not relevant to the quality of the products but driven by the demand and supply of the products and market. Thus, the price of durians fluctuates according to internal and external factors, instead of quality of the products. In general, the older the durian tree, the better the quality of its durian. For example, a 100 years old durian tree with unregistered code/name/type/variation that sells at RM20 per durian, will taste far more better and of higher quality than a 30 years old Musang King durian tree’s durian that sells at RM50 per durian in the market. Before Musang King and Black Thorn top the table of the durian list in Malaysia in recent years, it was the era of Red Prawn and D24😎
Another tips eating durian ...the durian skin has 2 purposes, 1 two preserve the temperature and 2 to preserve the taste. Therefore its better to eat it almost immediately once it open.
My neighbour got a Muthong durian. Fruit and flesh is bigger but the taste is so terrible. More acidic. Some fruit is a little watery. Had to chop down the fruit coz it's a lousy variety. I prefer the durian Tembaga, a kampong variety. Small fruit but taste is very heavenly !!!
I think the summary is on point. Thai durian is for beginners, Malaysia durian is for connoisseurs. That's why Thai durian is more acceptable in world market, as it is easier to eat, but Malaysia varieties is more for experienced eaters looking for deeper taste. Thai like to eat durian with other things like rice, Malaysia like to eat it just like that.
Not really. Ask warga mas Malaysia, northern and North Eastern Peninsular Malaysia people. If there are any any Sabahan or Sarawakians reading this, share your culinary thoughts.
When was this? I see firecracker paper on the ground, around Chinese New Year? I've always wondered about "XO" - maybe it smells like alcohol because it's slightly over-ripe.. in Malaysia durians start to ferment after a few days, people turn it into "tempoyak", which is used in Malay cooking.
Thailand and Malaysia Eat durian differently style. Malaysia harvests durians when durians are ripe more than Thailand. Therefore, Malaysian durian has a strong aroma and taste and a stronger smell than Thai durian.
Among all SEA countries that got Durian... only thai people eat unripe durian.. all around the world eat ripe durian but thai people are different.. 😅😅😅

Pretty fair comment from Flora and Note. Malaysians will forever love their local durians and vice versa ...go hunt down many more local desserts and food
It’s still a lot fun trying all the varieties. Seems like we have 200 more varieties to try 🤣
@@FloraandNote my favorite are D24, XO and old trees durian kampung
If you ever visit Sabah again you must try the local durian Dalit and durian Sukang. You can only get it in Sabah.
Such joiceful to watch one eat durians especially so many varieties im so missing out thanks for the posting go the distance!
You can eat durian with sticky rice and coconut milk and you can put some sugar if u want..it so good..
As a westerner I’ve never tried durian but this may make me curious enough to try it , also how did you come across TK ? He looks like good fun to have new food experiences with. Love your videos keep going 😀
We actually met TK during a food tour in KL! He's awesome - so knowledgable and fun!
wow... this is quite an amazing comparison... nothing like having an expert with you! thanks so much
interesting... durian is not very popular here in Canada and I am not sure which species or type is available in my local supermarket here.
De' Musang King Malaysia... 'The Never Ending Story' 😊🎉🎉🎉
Such a lovely and adorable couple. Very fair in their statements and full of smiles. I am a new subscriber to your channel. Taiwan, September 2024.
Oh my gosh, that’s a lot of durian! So many different ways to eat it. I didn’t get to taste any Durian when I visited Thailand because I wasn’t adventurous enough. All the signs in the hotel rooms about no durian allowed scared me 😂
Malaysian Durian have a stronger smell, so you better prepare xD
Glad u guys enjoy our durian!
Next round of durian feast/buffet then u will fall in love with Malaysian durian 😛
Whenever I visited Bangkok, durian chips is a must as souvenirs snacks to be brought home!
Should try the hot rice with fried durian mixed with fried anchovies and dried Chilli paste.
Its a version of lauk tempoyak ikan bilis. My friend dont like the taste of tempoyak, so she eat it your way. I sometime eat fresh durian as a creamy condiment with my rice meal. Quite similar to Pakistanis adding yogurt to their plain rice meals.
Congratulations on almost 100k subs kruuppp
We’re getting there! 😁😁😁
You guys got the best food guide in TK. Look at the size of his tummy. I'm surprised you didn't try the black thorn durian. It's actually a mutated version of the Monthong.
So you notice the tummy
Flora & Note u should try our Cendol Durian...it is marvellous.
You should try eating durian with chocolate flavoured ice cream. The best combination for desserts.
Bang non?
I've never tried it, i do know it smells but the taste is awesone. Will definitely try it when I'm that side.
10:32 yes you can eat durian with rice. in Northern Malay tradition, we add one more ingredient, air garam(salted water) or salted coconut milk with durian and rice. it will taste best!
Totally agree. It’s to be taken with santan + salt on rice.
@@mrals6874 yummy 😋
my grandma used water, sugar, rice and durian..in 1 combo..try it..its good..u can use sticky rice also
eat the whole seed, scoop everything from the seed while its in your mouth. thats the best way to get full experience or taste of durian.
never have a small bite, because it will not have the full bodied...
To eat with rice, some state add more sweet things. Like palm sugar or just sugar. Some cultures like from Perak, will add salty things, ikan masin, ikan pekasam or just fried fish and chicken. It's a balance between sweet and salty.
I love bitter sweet creamy durian so definitely Malaysian durian is my choice. ❤
Malay durian and Thai durian both are very delicous
Nope. It's not true, Malaysian is better and tastier.
Manthong durian from Thailand 30 years ago in Perth Australia was like $5 a kilo now it’s $20 kilo Australia
Enjoy the differences and varieties.
And jungle durian in borneo is red colour
durian is better with sticky rice and mix with coconuts milk like malay style and the results is so good and creamy
That sounds wonderful 😍
The best durian in my opinion :
1. Musang King - Malaysia
2. Super tembaga - Indonesia
3. Black thorn - Malaysia
4. Kanyao - Thailand
5. Tekka - Malaysia
6. Bawor - Indonesia
7. Chanee - Thailand
In Malaysia it is call Durian Buffet...
I from hong kong, and hong kong durian is the best in the world (the durian imported from Malaysia)
You guys should've tried black thorn durian, Apparently better than musang king. I will be there in June , will look out for this store.
Black thorn was even more expensive than musang king 🤣 we’ll add that to our list to try for next time 👍
Black thorn is very very expensive. Even I haven't tasted it.
@@FloraandNote Yes thank god I will be sharing with a friend. You guys had too much durian already. Wise choice not to have durain buffet lol.
@@keangwooichoo6138 come to australia and you will see what expensive means especially durains.🤣🤣🤣
Black thorn very expensive lor .. One seed is not enough 🤣
Petaling Jaya not in Kuala Lumpur area. Petaling Jaya are in the state of Selangor
I m thais
I like both monthong and musanking ..i think both r best of durain
feedback from the world market clearly is enough to tell you which Thai durian or Malaysia durian better. am i right?
you need to try patin tempoyak(fish with gravy durian)
Agree
Malaysian durian are the best because they ripe naturally and fall from the tree. Thailand and Indonesia usually pluck before they ripe.. thats make the different
Petaling Jaya are in state of Selangor not in Kuala Lumpur
Yes, my mistake there!
Hey there...just to share. If you're eating durian with rice, it's best if you can add in some warm salt water and perhaps if you want to add some sugar also it will taste good though. Take care
What an awesome experience of tasting Malaysian durians, Flora and Note. I'm like you, Flora, dislike eating durian with rice...😂😅
Maybe if it was coconut sticky rice like the one in Thailand it might taste better 😄
@@FloraandNote yeah, you are right...durian with creamy coconut sticky rice is better. I have tried it before...😋😋😋
@@chaw294durian cook with coconut milk n little bit gula melaka.... eat with sticky rice.... Malaysian call it seghawa durian 🥰🥰🥰😋😋
@@LalaLala-gu6fzOh, interesting...thanks for sharing
the next level would be fermented durian with sambal budu mixed with rice, mostly popular along the east coast in kelantan. if you find a restaurant that has sambal tempoyak(fermented durian) or budu durian have a go with rice.
It’s a minority tradition or culture here in Malaysia😊
Quality of durians in Malaysia are generally better than the rest of the world due to geographical factors and the way they are grown and cultivated.
Malaysian Food and Fruit
Are the best in the Wolrd.
Only on internet.
Next time try durian kampung, black thorn and, D14.. i promise its amazing too..
My neighbour got a Muthong durian. Fruit and flesh is bigger but the taste is so terrible. More acidic. Some fruit is a little watery. Had to chop down the fruit coz it's a lousy variety. I prefer the durian Tembaga, a kampong variety. Small fruit but taste is very heavenly !!!
bruh, we malaysian also eat durian with rice, but not ordinary rice, we eat it with glutinous/sticky rice + coconut milk + durian flesh 🤤🤤🤤
To reduce the body heat, pour water into pod and drink from it....
Malaysia durian has complex flavour unlike others which is taste like raw potatoes
I never thought durian stall could be a dating spot too 😂
If you like sweet and not bitter, you should have gone ne for D24. That's the sweet custardy variant especially if you are used with monthong type.
I've always wondered about "XO" - maybe it smells like alcohol because it's slightly over-ripe.. in Malaysia durians start to ferment after a few days, people turn it into "tempoyak", which is used in Malay cooking.
im from africa and i have taste singapore thai indo , malaysia is the best
I actually prefer durian kampung (village durian). 🤩
We have to try that next time 😊
Thailand and Malaysia Eat durian differently style. Malaysia harvests durians when durians are ripe more than Thailand. Therefore, Malaysian durian has a strong aroma and taste and a stronger smell than Thai durian.
Sedapnya tengok cat sleep 😍🤤
Never put the durian with seed into your mouth as it may cause accidental choking if it falls back into the throat.
now no 1 is Black Thorn Musang King become no 2🥰😋😋😋
Durian + rice + sambal belacan + remember me!
🤭I only tried one bit in my life 😜 that's so amazing
🙌🙌🙌🙌 OX , I must try that, Flora

SS2 is not KL. SS is somewhere Petaling Jaya.
season starts now in April!
Try Hot rice + Salty Water (just to mushy mushy) + half spoon of sugar + 3 or 4 durian. Not healthy but yummy.
Among all SEA countries that got Durian... only thai people eat unripe durian.. all around the world eat ripe durian but thai people are different.. 😅😅😅
