Janis was a goddess, she left us at just 27 years old. The studio version of this song is phenomenal, but Janis's best song is Me and Bobby McGee, written by Kris Kristofferson. He and Janis dated for a while, he did not hear it until after Janis died. He said, “I walked all over L.A., just in tears. I couldn’t listen to the song without really breaking up. So when I came back to Nashville, I went into the Combine building late at night, and I played it over and over again, so I could get used to it without breaking up.”

In 1967 Irma Franklin, Aretha's sister, recorded this song and it went to #10 on the Billboard Blues and Rhythm chart. Janis recorded it in 1968.

Janis just had a raw and powerful voice. At the time no one sang the blues like Janis. Her performances were from the soul.

❤ Insightful reaction - perceptions about Janis were spot on - except that she didn't have control of her voice ❤
🎶"Me and Bobby McGee" (studio version) showcases all Janis' vocal range and ability.

Love Janis and her soul. I'd love to see you react to "Cry Baby" which is a somewhat lesser hit of hers, but it shows off her vocal awesomeness better than most of her other songs.

My Janis recommendations- Summertime Live 1969, and Ball & Chain live at Monterey Pop Festival. Imo, this one wasn’t one of her better performances, she was just having fun, but she was something special.

Janis was a force of nature. But she had a terrible self image because of being bullied her whole life. In school she was once voted the ugliest boy in school. The saddest thing I ever heard her say was "I make love to thousands of audience members each night, then go home alone." I love Janice and miss her dearly. Great reaction. Peace.

I love your comments that she is free spirited and moved in a hippy dippy manner. LOL a lot of us were shaking it in every direction back then. Sad about the drugs that claimed her, Hendricks, Morrison and others...

That was filmed in Germany, if i recall correctly. I've always thought those fit looking, short haired boys surrounding her on stage were likely U.S. soldiers enjoying a rare moment. They were lucky not to be in Nam but I doubt they expected one of the then reigning queens of rock to dance with them. That poor girl looked absolutely star struck and stage frightened.

Check out "Ball and Chain" at Monterey. It's where she was first introduced. She blew the crowd away so much that the film crew (who hadn't planned to record her - she was planned as a second-tier performer) asked her to come back so they could include her. We're lucky she did. Momma Cass was astounded by her.

This is certainly not one of the better performances.. but I have a hard time saying the effed up. These events tended to get somewhat chaotic and she was just having fun. It sounds like she was a bit exhausted as well, as she usually has more energy and a bit more control of her choice (though she is known for her rasp and nontraditional singing style). I have been to a couple of festivals and been somewhat disappointed with the direction that certain artists took their spot. I still enjoyed them, but sometimes you do leave knowing you didn't get the full experience.

New sub., I like your animated reactions, listen to the studio version of this, also react to "Combination of the Two" and "Summertime" from the album "Cheap Thrills" with Big Brother one of the all-time classic rock albums of the 60s. Janis was the Queen of Rock, and a great blues singer, she had a tortured life, a very beautiful soul.

Janis was a 5-foot-nothing, nuclear bomb with horrible stage fright. pain and Janis go hand in hand. she couldnt get on stage w/o a bottle of Jack or whatever was closest. her own band was horrible to her. this talent literally went through hell before she died. her being on stage was literally her only escape once she was on it. you really need to check her studio version. Pearl is a revelation in every aspect.
