The upward flip of the barrel begins ever so slightly before the bullet exits the barrel. It doesn't take much at all to affect the impact. It may exit before one "sees" any recoil, but even a practically immeasurable amount can have quite an effect on a pistol bullet, especially at longer ranges.
A heavy fast load works, but speed is a very important factor, regardless of caliber. For example, the .45 ACP is a highly respected cartridge, but it is too slow to really blow up a watermelon very impressively.
@@LilOutdoorsmangoogleplus I bought the redhawk.Nice revolver.Feels good in the hands.Appears to be made of good quality.Hope it’s a good one.Just gonna change out front sight to fiber optic I think
You'll love it. I'm a "Smith" guy to the bone, but I have to say that I enjoy the Ruger revolvers, too; otherwise, I would not have owned so many of them, including this one. :-)
I guess one indication that a person is a hopelessly addicted gun nut is when he gets equally excited about a 7" revolver, a SCAR 17, or an old surplus bolt gun!
I have the Redhawk with the 5 1/2 inch barrel.I bought it in 1987.It is my favorite out of my collection.Love shooting it.Really enjoy your videos Hickok45.
My friend was bragging bout how big is Taurus .357magnum, until he saw the Redhawk. I told him I got it for $600 and his jaw dropped. It is one of the best revolvers hands down. It isn't pricy, it can take what you put in it, it is easy to clean. Down side is conceal carried is hard.
@@colinstanley4456 if you’re a big dude with big hands like Hickok you should be fine. I wouldn’t let my gf shoot it. It’s intimidating for sure. Pulling out that cannon after shooting my 9mm is intense lol. Nothing someone with shooting experience and a little body mass couldn’t handle though
Bought a Super Blackhawk Bisley 44 Mag with 7.5 bbl a few weeks ago and it is awesome. It is my first 44 Mag and I already love this cartridge. Now you've got me thinking I need a Redhawk 44 Mag DA, maybe even this Hunter version... Your videos have taught me a lot and I enjoy watching them. Thanks!
Glad to know I ain't the only one. I once passed on a boxed set, Security Six and Redhawk, matching numbers, first year of the big brother 44 and only 5 bills !
I've owned a Super Redhawk .44 for app. 15 yrs. And love it. I've taken several deer with it and of all my guns it's the one I enjoy shooting the most. Long range target shooting is a blast. The load options make it so much fun.
Thanks for doing a review on a large Ruger. They may be heavy and overbuilt, but I think they are beautiful. Sort of reminds me of my big Harley Davidson Electra Glide.
I agree with all your comments. I have a Smith 629 and shot heavy 300 grain loads and it started damaging the gun. I now shoot much lighter loads. The Ruger is a tank!
I have a 5.5" .44 Redhawk that accompanies me on any outdoor excursion where I'm likely to encounter bear (7-shot GP100 .357 otherwise). One of the best-shooting revolvers I've ever shot, I absolutely love it. If I were a deer hunter, I'd definitely use it for that, too. Extremely accurate with my Holosun 507cx2 green dot (have one on my GP, too, as well as my Marlin 1894 SBL in .44). Fantastic revolver.
First off, what a wonderful shot! you are! I have just purchased a vintage redhawk 9 1/2, and look forward to viewing all videos on it. Yours are the BEST! Thank you!
When I was in the market for a 44, I found a beautiful S&W 29. Hated it - shot like crap. Bought a Redhawk w/ Hogue grips - LOVE IT - shoots like a 9mm
I was at outdoor range and a gentlemen next to me had one. It had a Leupold scope and he said he was shooting bear loads. He planned on deer hunting with it so he was zeroing it in. I let him use my spotting scope and he allowed me to fire it. It was really cool of him letting me try it out. The gentle was the coolest person I met at a range.
I am a Smith & Wesson guy, I have 8 of them, but I may have to make room in the safe for a RedHawk, or a Snubby Alaskan. Hickock is the best, his videos are funny, informative, and John could get work as a professional Camera Man.
.44 mag is indeed a great round, just shot a bunch of it today with my 629 and then I finished off with some of my own cast 44 specials, just such a great gun/caliber combo.
Very happy to see a review of the Redhawk. I bought one about 6 months ago. My model is just the standard Redhawk 7 1/2 in barrel. My first 44 magnum and I really enjoy shooting it. I was surprised how managable the recoil was. I put a set of pachmayr grippers on it and they feel better in my hand than the wood grips. Anyway thanks for the enjoyable video and congrats on your new 'aquisition".
I don't know a lot about handguns. But, I have 2 Rugers. One is the Mark II Target model with a bull barrel and the other is this gun. Of course this man can shoot but, both of my Rugers are ridiculously accurate. Both are overbuilt, heavy, and not extremely aesthetically pleasing. But, if you don't care how it looks or what it weighs and just want a gun that gets the job done, you can't go wrong with a Ruger.
There's a lot of magic taking place in this video. 1-shot, multiple hits, seeing the bullets flying before they hit the gong, awesome stuff! I've always like the Ruger revolvers, and the Redhawks in particular. They just feel like you're holding a significant, substantial piece of gear.
Loved to see you smack the tree around a bit with that thing. One of my fav parts of your vids is when you shoot at the tree. Love to see the difference in how various guns/calibers send the plates around. Some not making them flip at all while others flip them so hard they bounce back. Fun stuff.
I would have bought one if it had the same style hogue grips as the gp100s. I absolutely love the way the hogue grips feel. They fit PERFECTLY in my hands and handle recoil like a dream
Love Ruger - presently own the Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag 5" barrel, Ruger 357 GP 100 5", Ruger LCR 357 and the Ruger 357 Security Six. I have loaded 300 grain Hornady XTP and just love shooting this beast. All Rugers are built to withstand anything shot through them - and I might add without being concerned about it falling apart. Glad you posted this video - enjoyed watching it.
Man what a beautiful revolver. That thing puts one heck of a piece of lead downrange. The tree spun at light speed when it got a taste of that .44. Thanks Hickok for another great vid. I look forward to your new vids everytime I get on the tube.
I love my mod. 29 8 3/8" and thought is was a large, heavy revolver until the Redhawk 7 1/2" joined the arsenal. The S&W is more graceful in appearance and handling but the Ruger is the one I have used most often over the last 30+ years. Little things like the locking bolt cuts being offset from the center give the chamber a bit more meat where it counts and make this one seriously reliable and resilient.
Hickok, your featured Ruger reminds me a lot of a security six that i started policing with many years ago. I purchased it because it was much more affordable on a Police Officers starting pay in 1978. Loved the gun and still own it today. An observation of Rugers i have owned and fired over the years is that the factory trigger always seemed a bit stiff to me but perhaps thats just me. I am a big fan of ruger revolvers and enjoy all the Ruger videos (and the others) that you do for us.
Physical this gun looks like a mixture of a modern revolver and the old cowboy pistols with that tall frame. A perfect combination! Also, while I love the history and styling of the S&W weapons I think more and more that a Ruger is the way to go for a heacy pistol - especially if you are interested in reloading and experimenting with really hot powder loads.
Bought on of these when they first came out. They were introduced with the 7 12" barrel. Still one of my favorite guns to shoot. Have shoot targets at 100 yards.
Hickock is right. With my .45 Colt SAA, when I line the sights up on a target, the bore will actually be pointing below my point of aim. The recoil of the 250 grain bullet pushes the muzzle up a bit before the bullet exits thus hitting where I'm aiming. I learned a long time ago to hold onto the fore arm of my shotgun while zeroing it with slow heavy slugs. Whether or not I held the fore arm down when firing changed my point of impact.
Thank you for demo'ing the second greatest handgun ever. OK it slips to third if I have been watching Westerns, but still one of the three all time greats!
That Red Hawk is a nice 44 mag,,I had a Black Hawk 44mag to go with my Marlin 44mag carbine,,,but the Black Hawk was so difficult to control due to it's light weight, I gave it to my friend for a B-day present,,,he liked it...

Rugers used to be one of the guns of choice with silhouette shooters along with the Dan Wesson revolver. Dan Wesson was the gun of champions a lot, too. As far as recoil: The slug is out of the barrel is less than 1000th of a second. (Bullet goes 1200fps in a short barrel less than a foot long.) The immediate and opposite reaction of recoil is always straight back. When the recoiling energy hits the resistance of your hand it has to go up. By that time I think the slug has left the barrel.

Lately shooting 44 in a Henry Lever gun Big Boy with that octaganal barrel is just a whole lot of fun. Plinking with a 44 special is such a pleasure, I have even looked into trying to find a revelover subby in 44 special.
Hickok i had the ported version loved it but was stupid enough not to get the reloading equipment needed to not pay at the time 25 bucks for a box of 20 to shoot it, I miss my 30 carbine Blackhawk as well. Good memories thanks.
My dad has the exact same version of the Redhawk. We had to replace the grips years ago for something that would fit his hands better. I love Rugers, but I always end up wanting to replace the grips.
I realize this is an old video, but I love the 44 magnum round. Without a doubt, it's my favorite handgun cartridge to hand load.
The upward flip of the barrel begins ever so slightly before the bullet exits the barrel. It doesn't take much at all to affect the impact. It may exit before one "sees" any recoil, but even a practically immeasurable amount can have quite an effect on a pistol bullet, especially at longer ranges.

its a revolver..some "flash" from the round goes out the side between cylinder and barrel, love these guns so much fun to shoot and never fail
I love your .44 Magnum reviews.I have Colt Anaconda and love and love it.Thanks for your videos.
My favorite revolver!!
My dad has the exact same version of the Redhawk. We had to replace the grips years ago for something that would fit his hands better. I love Rugers, but I always end up wanting to replace the grips.
I was waiting for the dirty Harry reference, I bought a sw model 29 classic last year and love it. Thanks for the vid.
ruger makes some fine revolvers
Best part of the video is at 54 seconds where hickok goes, "Yehes!!!!"
