In Vietnam, the agriculture industry holds immense significance for the nation's economy. However, a crucial question arises: should the government persist in promoting growth within this sector, or should it prioritize the development of more advanced industries? Let us know down below!

Kinda torn here, invest in other sectors will definitely help get rich faster but it’s because of the focus on agriculture that the supplies shortage wasn’t as bad as other countries during the pandemic and also the Ukraine conflict.

My take: VN will overtake M'sia.... Phillipines will stay stuck in 3rd world. Indon will be a 'an economic powerhouse simply because of its pop. size
Hopefully as VN move into higher income, it will devolve into more democratic norms..... just like S.Korea

Vietnam desperately needs more investment in industry. industries that will pull the country faster. most developed countries are strong in industry. Vietnam needs to promote strong industry that will be a bigger source of revenue than agriculture. However, we also need to promote diplomacy so that developed countries can transfer technology so that new industries can develop.

Glad VN is growing not only industrial and service sectors but also agricultural sector. This balanced growth will allow rural provinces to retain its population, maintain its multi-generational household culture, prevent mass migration of working people to urban center which causes stress on the infrastructure of large metropolitan cities. Socially and historically, VN's farmers had made the most sacrifice in its effort to gain independence so this economic growth will provide emotional rewards and social harmony amongst different social classes in VN, preventing domestic discord. Financially, a healthy agricultural sector helps bring in crucial foreign currency to enhance VN's foreign currency reserve to import crucial high tech equipment for its manufacturing sector.

$64B export in agriculture products means that $64B import of machine, parts etc... for local companies not FDI ones. This is very important since when Vietnam reach UMI status, a lot of low value FDI would find other low cost countries to manufacturing, only local companies would and still creat massive jobs opportunity for Vietnamese then

Mostly smokes and mirrors. Vietnam has greater population than Thailand, but its agricultural products have much worse reputation. Thai's products are streamlined, well packaged, sold for decent margin while Vietnamese products are mostly feeds for low end, factory inputs. For instance, dogs and cats food are made from Vietnamese exports. Cheap frozen catfish sold at supermarket that's stuffed into frozen nuggets are from Vietnam. Most famously, Vietnamese coffee, one of its national pride, is imported to make powdered instant coffee. No respectable, high margin coffee house would use Vietnamese coffee. That's the reality of Vietnamese agricultural sector. Huge focus on volume.
What's the harm you might ask? To produce that much volume, the strain on natural resource is astounding. Water and soil are abused to power giant corporate farms which churn out low quality agricultural products. Their farm frequently employed tons of chemicals which seeped into ground water and pollute waterways. More alarmingly, climate change had transformed many once fertile regions into barren land, requiring even more intense pumping of groundwater and more chemical to be used on top soil. Another huge drain on water resource is aquaculture. They preached the old model of combining aquaculture with farming to naturally enrich the soil, but in practice that's very hard to achieve. Thus, major corporations simply pump their fishes full of anti-biotics, on tiny patches of water and pump the polluted water back into the waterway.
It gets a lot worse too, more than 40% of their export in value, not volume, if they report volume I suspect it would reach 60-70%, are sent to China. Chinese influence on Vietnamese market is astounding. They cause many panics among Vietnamese producers by closing the border over CV restriction, doomed tons of export waiting at the border. Part of why Vietnam never moved up in the quality chain is due to its main customer, China, low expectation. The Chinese export market allows low quality, tainted with chemical Vietnamese exports, so producers have little incentive to improve their process to producer higher margin, safer and more environmental friendly product.
Not just that, China have a stranglehold on Vietnamese agricultural sector through its dams. Vietnamese major rivers experienced crisis in recent decades thanks to Chinese funded and constructed dams in Indochina, as well as Chinese dams within Chinese border. The Chinese government had frequently filling its reservoir during dry season to protect itself, at the expense of other nations who rely on the river for their agricultural activities. One of China's "blessing" to the region is its control of flooding season. While seemingly "charitable", the flooding season helped transport nutrition down the river network and enrich its embankment. By controlling the flood, China inadvertently holding back this nutrition transportation to Vietnamese farmland. They supplanted it by whatever but increasing fertiliser and chemical use. Most alarmingly, climate change also brought about seawater incursion to Vietnamese river. The low water level from Chinese dams have accelerated this phenomenon, rendering a large swat of Vietnamese farmland unusable for the moment.
Finally, there had been rumours over the years about Chinese tradesmen buying agricultural damaging products such as certain fungi and insects. While these are still mostly rumours, their frequency suggest a lack of knowledge among Vietnamese farmers whose pursuit of profit can lead to self-destruction and its government inability or unwillingness to support and protect its agricultural sector. Another such example of Vietnamese government incompetency and corruption is a strange practice of importing goods from neighbouring nations to export to meet national quotas. They have done similar things with oil exports, but more relevant to the topic is importing Thai's fruits to export to China.
Vietnamese agriculture might have reached its peak, in a few years, the reduction in Chinese demand due to shrinking population and economy, climate change causing soil erosion, drought and exhaustion of natural resources will take its toll. I don't see a complete collapse, but if can make a bet, I will bet against its agricultural sector long term. It's going to be rough for their farmers.

thanks for pointing out some disadvantages of Vietnam agriculture. I admit that there is still huge room for improvement. Vietnam is making plan and implementation improvement on agriculture sector in more "thuận thiên" methods - following the nature to establish sustainable eco-agricultural chain, and marketing more of Vietnam agri products in other countries. Vietnam's agriculture is still in the progress of transforming from quantity targets towards profit, environment and farmer income targets.
Agriculture would always be the base of economy and assure food security, especially country with population roughly 100 million as Vietnam. For export, the world population, in the near future still continuously grows, and demand for food is not weakening soon

    • @DanKann86
      @DanKann86 Рік тому +14

Though there are some merits (especially in the past) to what you stated, overall it is very one-sided with some inaccuracies. Very significant improvement in the quality of products which are exported to many countries in more recent years. Vietnam export many high quality agricultural products (fruits, seafood, rice) to many countries having very strict and high requirements such as Japan, US, EU, Australia, S, Korea, UAE. Those countries do very stringent testings and inspections. A country (local firms) has to work very hard to gain approval for export into those countries. Btw, even Thailand now is exporting quality Vietnamese lychee into their Gourmet Market stores. On the heavy use of pesticides and such as mentioned, but such products are normally not intended for export, especially to developed countries. Even China is getting very strict on their agricultural imports in recent years. The heavy use of antibiotics in animal feed is VERY common in many many countries including the US, nothing new here. In the US, a newly hatched chicken only takes 1 month to ready for the meat market and more cheaply to produce than those raised in Vietnam. Don't even mention about the farm-raised salmon in Norway. Agricultural runoffs and ground water depletion are also big issues in many countries including the US, European countries, Australia and many parts of the world as modern heavy agriculture do take a toll on the environment. As for the robusta coffee, it was a more favorable variety to grow in the region and Vietnam has gained that very lucrative market share. Lastly, the largest export markets of Vietnamese agricultural products are the US (24.6%), China (22.6%), Japan (6.6%), and South Korea (4.9%).

@@DanKann86 This sounds like a government official defending their shoddy work. Let's break it down:
"High quality" needs to be defined because fruits, seafood and rice are not high quality. They can be of low quality, low margin, high volume, used in cat food for instance in seafood, and the infamous cheap, chemically washed cat fish, or "saba fish".
The next defence about the abuse of chemical is laughable. Not only did the defence make use of "what-about-ism", it also completely fell flat on actually addressing the issue. Someone else is destroying the environment to produce contaminated product, we must do the same! "Such products are normally not intended for export" should be alarming and not used as a defence of a rotten agricultural sector, in an agrarian country. Everyone use chemicals, but not learning from their mistake is not a defence. In fact, it's shameful how terrible the industry was run that a rather famous story of Japanese entrepreneurs went to Vietnam to grow organic produces to export back to Japan. It speaks to the local standard that the produces cannot be used to export and there's a class of "export grade" products. I wonder why other countries do not have such division?
Lastly, coffee and the problem with export market. If one was to look into what constitutes the export products to China vs the U.S., despite the value in export to the U.S. is higher than China, most of the value in export to the U.S. are dominated by nuts, coffee and pepper. Everything else combined are lesser than coffee alone. This means that should any events negatively affect these 3 produces, export to the U.S. market would be disrupted. Meanwhile, export to China are more diverse with rice, starches and especially a variety of fruits. The reason why there's a value gap between export products to the U.S., Japan, Korea and so on, which are all propped up thanks to coffee, is simple. The quality of other produces are simply not good enough for these markets. Only the easy market like China, South East Asia or Africa would accept Vietnamese fruits and rice, that's the unfortunate reality. Just look at the data for fruits, China dominates across the board.
Speaking of domination. Vietnamese coffee seems to generate a ton of value, isn't it? After all, in term of tonnage, Vietnamese coffee export is the 2nd largest in the world. This unfortunately is where it gets really bad. Looking at the U.S. share of value in coffee import, for instance. Vietnamese coffee barely touched 3.7%, lower than Guatemala - 5.6%, Honduras - 5.5%, and far below the likes of Brazil - 17% and Colombia - 19%. The U.S. constituted 11% of total export value for Vietnamese coffee. What about the German market? Which constituted 16% of Vietnamese coffee export. 10% of the value, while Brazil got 28% of the total value. High volume, low quality described essentially the state of Vietnam agriculture sector. More importantly, all other Canephora coffee producing nations such as Brazil, Indonesia and even India had Canephora coffees that won awards in blind taste test. Can't say the same for Vietnam produced Canephora. The 2nd largest exporter in the world can't produce coffee good enough for awards while others have? Something is fundamentally wrong with Vietnamese agriculture.
The next 2-5 years could demonstrate how fragile and unsustainable Vietnamese agriculture sector is. Climate change and El Nino threaten Vietnam agricultural industry, and potentially trigger a food crisis. If the Chinese close their dams to preserve water, nobody knows what can happen. Better live in reality than starve in a dream.

@@ca-ml1rs You can stop with the long writings and I'm no govt official and other insinuation. You may not like it, but as a commenter I was trying to present other aspects to get a better picture. That's what people do here and they don't have to agree on everything. I'm from a country in the West and I keep up with the news and developments in Asia. As previously mentioned there are some merits in what you stated. Overall, it is very one-sided and without any positive points to be balanced and fair. One of your main point was agricultural products from Vietnam don't meet the high import standards and demands of advanced countries and are mainly sold to China. I have shown this is not an accurate picture. Even China have strict agricultural import standards. Also, values are MUCH more important and relevant than volume in trade and economics. Your attempts to paint/focus on a dark, one-sided picture on the whole is unbalanced. You certainly write a lot here. An unbiased and objective writer would try to be balanced and fair pointing out the negatives and positives and make reasonable comparisons. You can rant all you like. Vietnam still have many isues to improve on as a developing country. There's an interesting research done on the sustainable living and socio-economic development of various countries. One can look up: "Vietnam, the unlikely poster child for a sustainable lifestyle" and the included research for a worthwhile read.
