If it wasn't for Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath probably would've broken up. He provided the creative spark this band needed and they created a fresh brand new sound going forward into the 80s. What a set of pipes this guy had! All of his work in Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio is pure gold! It's too bad that him and the band didn't get along too well. Imagine the music they could've continued making to this day.
Yep. RJD was a major shot in the arm for Sabbath, at a time when they were really needing one. Those last 2 albums with Ozzy (Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die) were pretty forgettable. No dis on Ozzy, it just wasn’t clicking with that lineup anymore. RJD came along and really breathed new life into them. I saw them on this tour and again a year later with Vinnie Appice on drums. Both shows were f’n great. Ronnie’s voice couldn’t be touched. He was a real one of a kind. I couldn’t get into anything Sabbath did after he left.
I've read Dio's autobiography! they'd kicked ozzy out and sabbath was about to break up, but Dio and Tony met by chance at a bar and Dio offered to sing and keep the band together, he really did save it!
@psyxech3408 I haven't read Ronnie’s autobiography but, that's the first time I've EVER heard that story. Back in the late 70's going into the 80's, it was known that Ronnie wanted to go solo after leaving Rainbow but his wife, Wendy, convinced him to hook up with Sabbath. She knew it would be a good stepping stone for the direction Ronnie wanted move in, in the first place. HEAVY! Rainbow was going more Pop with songs like "Long Live Rock 'n Roll". Ronnie saw what was coming with the NWOBHM and wanted to seize on that. But his wife didn't feel he was well established enough on his work with Rainbow alone. Joining Sabbath completely revitalized them AND gave Ronnie much needed exposure to the world. He was contracted for 3 albums. He did 'H&H' and 'TMR' then bailed out after Iommi released "Live Evil" without his approval on the final mix. Apparently Ronnie was unhappy with some of his performances that were used. Regardless, he was done with Black Sabbath and DIO was born, which carried him for nearly the next decade until he rejoined BS for "Dehumanizer". The man definitely has a long, lustrous history that all of us should be thankful for. RIP RJD ✌️💖

Without a doubt, one the most overlooked rock songs in history, when I talk to people who came of age in the late 70's early 80's and they dont know this song, I just shake my head !
Late 1982. I was just out of NAVY bootcamp in Orlando. Was sent to MCAS El Toro near LA for some schooling. One night at the Enlistedmans Club a "tribute band" played. We arrived early. It was RJD in the time between Sabbath and Holy Diver.. He stepped up off the stage onto our table and sang "Man on the Silver Mountain".

Ronnie was MADE for this song! PERIOD! Thank you Black Sabbath for growing up with your music and to this day, I still listen to this masterpiece song!
This is one of the best album openers and also how you make an opening statement and Dio certainly made one hell of an opening statement on this awesome track
I was lucky to go to an Ozzy and Dio show and both are ICONS. Hope anyone who reads this gets a chance to see Ozzy, unfortunately Dio has passed, but I got to ride up an elevator with him and a TON of group-pies at his forum concert in LA, what a wild time. He was SUPER nice and humble.
By '79, Sabbath were pretty much at the 'end the road' as far as the first ten Ozzy years went. Then, it turns into a "win-win" situation for everyone. Sabbath picks-up Ronnie Dio and Ozzy gets introduced to Rhoads after Sharon cleans Ozzy up a little and creates the Blizzard of Ozz. Both parties bounced-back with a vengeance in 1980. As did AC/DC that same year with Brian Johnson on the phenomenal "Back In Black" right after Bon Scott had just recently passed. I was a junior in high school then. What a year, man. 😎👍🏻
This is the very first sabbath song with Dio that I've heard. I was 13, to be honest was in my birthday, the disc was a birthday gift from my father. This song changed my life and this CD is keept with my most precious things, because I'll give it to my first son, to keep the rock alive in my family.
That guitar bit right before the solo has no right being just a short tidbit of a fantastic song. It's so fantastic that it should've been the riff of its own song. But alas, it must instead be part of perfection.
One of the greatest vocal performances in one of the greatest songs on one of the greatest albums by one of the greatest bands of all-time. It really doesn't get any better than this.
The album Heaven & Hell literally changed the course of my life. It was heavy metal or NOTHING from that point on FOREVER!! If I were forced to name ONE SINGLE ALBUM that redefined a musical genre, it would be H&H, for sure.
Such a great song. RJD will never be forgotten, and neither will this music. Bill Ward was pretty much about dead here, with his drinking and drugging. He watched Bonham die and thought "well, guess I'm next." So glad he got sober!!!
After two less than stellar albums like "Technical Ecstasy" and "Never Say Die!", "Heaven and Hell" was a much welcome relief to a band like Sabbath looking to reinvent themselves in The New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Times were changing, and the band needed to change with them. It worked out well for Ozzy too, with Blizzard and Diary climbing the charts.

The live evil version of mob rules 🤘
How am I going to explain my kinds in 10 years from now that I'm still listening to music from the 70s and 80s and nothing can match it?!
Show them this with 120 Dezibel... and they do the same
Omgosh RJD had suuuuch a badass voice!! This is one of the baddest songs in history metal!!! ❤️❤️🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
His voice is like a heavy metal Version of Freddie Mercury. It’s so unique and I love it🎤💀🤘
I couldn't have put it better myself
Dio > fredie mercury
Dio is better than Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant.
Little man, BIG voice
@@srinath6247 I love Dio voice, but please... Freddie Mercury is another level...
What a great singer! An inspiration to so many R.I.P. Ronnie
Ronnie James Dio had one of the best voices ever in the world of Rock, no one can hold the torch to his vocals. the man was gifted
Perfection.
Ian Gillan in his prime . Halford Damm close
@@planetbard1 I agree but Klaus Meine, Bruce Dickonson and Ian Gillan is not far behind.
YES
1980 gave us some real bad ass albums. Like this one!!!
This is one of the best album openers and also how you make an opening statement and Dio certainly made one hell of an opening statement on this awesome track
I wonder who's call was that because they did it again the following album when Turn Up The Night kicked off The Mob Rules
@@ReflectionOfPerfection that's a good point you brought up there you are right on the money thanks for your comment
I have seen Ronnie several times in concert and he is one of the top 10 vocalist.
He could really belt it out. Awesome.
Great point m8
This is the very first sabbath song with Dio that I've heard. I was 13, to be honest was in my birthday, the disc was a birthday gift from my father. This song changed my life and this CD is keept with my most precious things, because I'll give it to my first son, to keep the rock alive in my family.
Cool Father!
that sounds like Nazi-ism

One of THE BEST Albums Ever!
Most epic band of heavy metal history
This Song Is Great
greater than your ass is sideways'''''''''
Greatest rock singer of all time
HEAVEN AND HELL IS A MASTERFUL PIECE OF MUSIC HISTORY, EVERY SONG ON THE ALBUM IS EXCELLENT ~
He was an amazing vocalist..raw. No special engineering required.
DAMN!!! This song was the shit when Heaven and Hell came out. Don't get jams like this anymore...
What a voice. I don't think RJD ever lost his range. Fantastic video... thank you for posting - brings back such good memories.
The album Heaven & Hell literally changed the course of my life. It was heavy metal or NOTHING from that point on FOREVER!! If I were forced to name ONE SINGLE ALBUM that redefined a musical genre, it would be H&H, for sure.
The best front man for Sabbath by far!!!!!!!!!! I wish that I got to see him in concert !
Classic ...Jamming out until I cannot anymore !!!
This may be the best single vocal performance in the history of metal..
Such a great song. RJD will never be forgotten, and neither will this music. Bill Ward was pretty much about dead here, with his drinking and drugging. He watched Bonham die and thought "well, guess I'm next." So glad he got sober!!!
but hay Bill ward Still Rocked them Drums he was so good In with Dio Tony and Gezzer
My first ever gig in 1980, my hearing was never the same but never looked back still rocking at 62
The studio didn't gloss over this man's vocals even one note
Best song on the album!!!
One of the blessed bands in the world which had the luck to have two exceptional vocalists: ozzy and the unforgettable Dio.
Great Song To Hear While Driving On The Freeway !!!
This comment is as stupid as you look
I think you need to give them a another try especially NSD…it’s aged very well.
@@williamcarnes6794 I just purchased the Super Deluxe Edition of Technical Ecstasy yesterday. Not bad, with a remixed edition of the album on disc 2, it's like hearing it anew all over again.
@Caped Critique All of the Dio albums were heavily played at my house…They were a different band with Ronnie
@@williamcarnes6794 Yes, they were. And that's a great way of puting it. Different. Not better, not worse. Ronnie had a different style and range that allowed Sabbath to explore new territory. Personally, I like every Black Sabbath album ever recorded, as they were all special in one way or another.
🤔took me this long to say it', but this is probably the best song, recording and live video ever made''''.period'
This track and the whole album was a pivotal moment in what shaped and defined power metal .
my black sabbath journey ended when i first heard heaven and hell. it was just too different from ozzy. what's funny is power metal is where i ended up and i'm not sure i listened to this one and dio fucking rocks it

I went the other way as a snotty adolescent. Already a fan of Dio from his time with Rainbow and got into Sabbath when Heaven and Hell was released. Following this, went on a quest to check out Ozzy era Sabbath and was blown away big style.
Rock Gods right there!
Rhino, Black Sabbath, with Ronnie James Dio on vocals, doesn’t get any better, Thank You
What a voice
Oh yes it does....rainbow in the dark was the calling card for rjd's death...he ain't slapping me nor anyone back again.
@Chatsworth Osborne, Jr. the music was much better with Ozzy tho.
@Chatsworth Osborne, Jr. and Martin, GOAT #2
@@demonrats7887 ....Not so much, really. Ozzy was at his best with Randy.
Second song 🎵 on the setlist @ Offenbach Stadthalle in June, 1980 after War Pigs. So many great songs on Heaven and Hell. A Renaissance and musical departure for Black Sabbath.
I remember hearing this for first time when it came out, and being blown away, I seen Ronnie live on his first tour Holy Diver and Killing the Dragon, Ronnie is the greatest rock metal vocalist of all time, I was fortunate to see him live and be pretty close to the stage, it always amazed he was not a big man but what a set of massive pipes, Sabbath and DIO match made by the Metal Gods,
The second concert I saw was Van Halen opening for SABBATH at M.S.G N.Y.C in 78 BLACK SABBATH being my favorite band it breaks my heart to even think anybody would leave let alone the singer but I loved the three RAINBOW album's so I was really happy to hear how they came out with a great new sound the first two album's are a masterpiece and TONY MARTIN the first two album's are a masterpiece too TONY IOMMI is just one of the great one's so I was lucky to see DIO with SABBATH about six times and by his own but never saw him in RAINBOW . RAINBOW RISING is one of my favorite album's the last time I saw was at RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL the HEAVN AND HELL tour my friend who went to the first SABBATH show with me said he had tickets for the show what a show that must have been about the six time we went to a SABBATH show not counting OZZY solo career. I have ramble enough. ROCK ON my friend LONG LIVE ROCK

Ronnie was a serious vocal athlete vs Ozzy. Ozzy just had the vibe on Geezers material. I think Ron was more prolific on his own. Love his Sabbath stuff too don’t get me wrong. :) Rip Ronnie James Dio !!!¿¿¿
Absolutely brilliant, song and the whole album. Dio, we missed each other in space and time! ❤️

what an awesome tune. and they really did a pretty good job of editing, superimposing the studio version of the audio on to a live performance
