replacing mountfield lawnmower carburetor - because of engine surging and hunting

- Rogers faithful RS 100 mountfield lawnmower has been struggling for a few months, the engine was throbbing / surging and although it would still cut the grass the engine needed sorting.
Apparently the engine surging is usually due to either not enough air / fuel getting through the carburetor - so we cleaned the filters, and still the problem persisted, so we took off the carb and cleaned that - squirting cleaning fluid into he jets etc etc ... stil the problems was there so we had to buy a new Carburetor (about £50 ... but that is cheaper than a new mower!)
In this Video my mate Alvar show us how to remove the old Carburetor, and replace the gaskets and then fix the new carb ... and there is a happy ending - the lawn mower fine now!

Great video, I did attempt to clean my carb and the problem still persisted, so I replaced the carb completely and works like a dream. Looking back when cleaning the old carb the gaskets were quite worn so maybe that was what the main issue was, because the older carb seemed to work correctly when inspecting.
Thanks, good to hear that it's working well now - enjoy!
@@rogthegardener1 i have just bought a brand new carburetor on line for my RS100 and its now started hunting, but was okay before, what i have done wrong do you think
Good effort.. I find with the carbs on here.. if you rim out the main jet and the small plastic slow jet it will work fine.. I have lots of videos on this model..
Thanks mick, we’ll take a look 👍
Thanks both just picked a free one of these with same issue and purchased cheap carb. from amazon with gaskets . Jobs a good one
@@nickcrossfield915 great to hear - well done
As said, at 14:00 take your time and don't over tighten the nuts. They a
e all 10mm and a small socket set will fit most of these.
Thanks for your comment - much appreciated
Thank you gentlemen
I could manage to replace the carb gaskit ....its working.❤
That's good news!
Thanks for your comment!
thanks guys, just did this on mine, surprised how easy it was.
simple striaght forward, saved a fortune.
Ah thats great to hear - thanks for letting us know
If you take out the plastic throttle stop screw (tickover adjustment) that you can see on the left of the carb at 4:30, that allows you to pull out the plastic jet that's fitted below it. Give this a clean with compressed air or carb cleaner as it is nearly always the cause of "surging".
Can you tell me where to get the exact same carburettor ?
Good question we searched online for this ' Genuine Mountfield Carburettor for RS100 Engine Found On HP414 SP414 and Others '
Managed to get the genuine part rather than a cheaper copy as we wanted the best possible chance of success - does that help?
Can you say why you chose to fit a new carb and not try to service it as I have the same issue on my 464pd. Thanks.
Hi Geoff - thanks for your comment, we had tried servicing the carb previously but it wasn't working .. it seems to be a fairly common problem after a few years .. in fairness probably about 10 years of good service in our case. So we gave up trying to fix it and found one online and replaced it - and it has been working well ever since (in fact I have been cutting 2 lawns with it today!) Good luck with yours - I think it is a good machine for the money?
by the way this is watched we searched for to find the genuine part ... good luck!
@rogthegardener1 Thank you. To start with, I have changed the spark plug. It appears to have made a difference straight away. I will monitor it and see how it goes before I go further with the carb. Keep up the great work. Watching with interest.
@@geoffwilletts4683 Thank you!
Question - should the first gasket not be on the outside of the plastic shield? When you removed the plastic shield you left the original gasket which mated between plastic shield and the engine block and then placed the new gasket directly on top of the old one. I think the first new gasket you put on should be between the plastic shield and the carb.
Thanks guys. Really helpful video. Just replaced the carb on my mower. Running like a dream.
Great to hear- thanks!

@@rogthegardener1 It's a Honda TBF, but similar stuff. Cheers! Let's resist getting electric mowers for as long as possible, they'll ban petrol in the end!
How much was the carb?
I think, from memory it was about £50 including delivery
@rogthegardener1 thanks. I'm about to change my carburettor. This video is a great help👍
How does that throttle cable get activated... i cant see how it gets used ... your help is appreciated.. kind regards
Hi, thanks for your comment, I am not sure if this is what you mean but the throttle is set a fixed running speed without the ability to change it .. if that makes sense?
@@rogthegardener1 thanks for your reply .. ..
Hi there ,could you ask Albert ,what is the long thin spring for which he fit back onto the carburetor along side what he called the throttle cable, thanks.
@michelod.i.y.5202
I have messaged Alvar, who will be in touch soon, thanks for your comment
Sorry for the slow reply, I'm pretty sure the part you are referring to is the governor spring basically it helps regulate the engine speed. Thanks for you enquiry.
