- Therapist analyzes the lyrics to Know Your Enemy by Rage Against the Machine. There is so much value in knowing our enemies. For Rage Against the Machine, the enemy is the elite. In our mental health journey, the elites in our life are often our beliefs. These beliefs quietly control us and our experience. The first step is knowing what we are fighting

The best thing about Rage Against the machine... their music will always be relevant. The worst thing about Rage Against the Machine... their music will always be relevant.
💤
Politics only go in circles.thats why this is always relevant.
Duuuuuude 👏🏻
You are so RIGHT!
That and Zac is not patient enough to make music that is not thrash... Sure anger is a muse but does not need a gritty background.
Tom Morello basically turned the guitar into a science lab.
Also, everything you hear on RATM albums is guitar/bass/drums. No synths, no turntables! Tom Morello is just a genius when it comes to making noises with the guitar. He's using a killswitch on this song, which is a button that allows him to cut the signal which is why it sounds like beeps and then you get to see what's like live.
That isn't a kill switch on his guitar. On this guitar he is using the Pickup Selector switch with one pickup volume turned off. It's how they accomplished this sound before the kill switch was invented.
Tom Morello and Zach de la Rocha are musical and lyrical geniuses
Tom is a Harvard grad .. serious they are all book smart
You should do testify .. from this. Concert . .. best part this concert was free
They are revolutionary. "The system is set, never change it with a ballot pull..."
I found you a couple days ago and I’m enjoying watching your videos. I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and Rage was my jam!
Tom morrelo went to school with Adam jones. Met Maynard while going to Harvard in Boston. Encouraged Maynard to move to LA. Where he became friend with Adam and the rest is history no Tom no Tool
I heard Tom tell a story on his Sirius XM show about showing Maynard what drop-D was
Why are you bringing up MJK? He’s not even in this video. Even though there are lives where he actually shows up to do the bridge. Hate this video because this is the one reactor’s react to while there are videos out there with MJK in it. That’s because of lazy ppl not posting links to the better ones.
@@frankiek2269probably because he has a guest verse in the song, dude. It really shows when you don't know about the song
@@Nannada1212 You aren’t very bright. I knew everything about this band back in ‘93. And it sucks that they don’t react to MJK being on stage with RATM for the bridge. Because Zak’s deadpan reading of it is absolutely horrendous. And there are at least three live videos on YT where Maynard shows up and sings it. Do you even know how they [Tool & RATM] became friends?
I love your channel. And just seeing your reaction and smile makes my day. Keep rocking.
Taylor's so good, love her advice!❤❤❤
One of the very best live performances I’ve ever been to. I saw them in 96/96 and they blew my mind RATM ✊🏽👊🏽
The concert was held in Finsbury Park London as a celebration of a successful campaign which propelled Killing in the Name into the Christmas number one spot on the UK Singles Chart in December 2009, beating out that year's The X Factor winner for the first time since 2005.
6:50 I agree completely, and have experienced this myself a few times. One that has always stuck with me is singing the opening to War Pigs at Ozzfest back in 2007. "Generals gathered in their masses" sounds unreal, and hits different, when you sing it at the top of your voice with 20,000 people.
Saw this song live on July 30th 2011 at LA Colliseum. I was heart broke that they broke up and wouldn't play this again for another 10+ years. Go see live music people. Total therapy 🤘😎
I was at that show! Pit Zone 1. Personally, think Muse out shined them that night but the tension was THICK when it was time for Rage came on. Everyone from zone 2 and zone 3 jumped the fences and swarmed zone 1. I felt like a sardine in the crowd right before they played. When that first beat dropped, the whole pit jumped as one and it was INSANE. Then the mosh pits started breaking out and the fires started. What a night!
@@R6Pirate I'll never forget when they first started playing the power went out and the energy of the crowd just dropped like a lead hammer. So much tension like you said being built up for so many years and then the power goes out. Cool facts in that pit that you were in, if you search UA-cam Dana White Rage Against the Machine you'll see him right in the middle of it
I literally have waited for you to do a song by RATM since I discovered your channel 😀 Thank you! ❤
I grew up on these guys. Best music of the 90s! They taught me, more so than my formal education, the importance of questioning everything. Check out their cover of Springsteen's "Ghost of Tom Joad"
That entire album is fire. Their version of Dylan's Maggie's Farm gets me every time.
the energy of this band is insane 😍🤘
Love that Maynard is on this song!
Settle for Nothing would be a great song from them to analyze.
Gravity is raging against that bookshelf almost as hard as Zack is on the Government.
Rage Against the Machine
✊️
Nice ! I saw them play live for the first time right after this album came out. Was an amazing concert ! Always come back listening to this album. Hope you enjoyed it too albeit not live
Calm Like A Bomb.
Ignite , Ignite, Ignite Ignite!
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras. I bet that would be a cool song to do a video on!
Those musicians and Chris Cornell had a band called Audioslave. Worth checking out
Like a Stone would be a choice pick for this channel, when you realize Chris was singing about waiting for death
Nothing like a little rage and psychoanalysis with my morning coffee. Thought tool Time was over? The fact that you mentioned that brings joy to your channel. 2006 Bonnaroo Manchester Tennessee I was watching tool and Tom Morello came out on stage and played lateralus with his teeth. Tom Morello and the guys from tool were all around each other when tool was formed play The Green Jello room. I believe Tom Morello was Adam Jones's roommate or maybe Maynard's roommate. Little tidbit I should definitely have remembered I'm getting old
As a therapist, you've gotta listen to "songs for no one" by Caligula's horse. That song has gotten me through some tough times, and I'm sure you would have some awesome things to say about the lyrics and tying it back to mental health. It's such a powerful song, you will love it.
Ooooh I love the comparison of looking at your own beliefs about yourself (or about others, imho). It's so important!
To put another mental health spin on it (and showing my age). I was a pretty wild teen metalkid when this came out. This band's energy totally gave me an outlet and direction for all that angsty, hormone driven, undiagnosed ADHD struggling energy and rage. (like injustice and abuse of power, instead of the annoying kid or adult that just somehow got on my nerve)
Plus it inspired me to learn a lot about alternative viewpoints of history and the wide range of philosophical and political views to explore. Something that school never inspired for me and really helped me form a clearer picture of my own identity as a teen was and what I wanted it to become growing up.
15 yrs ago !!! Wow this song is as relevant today as it ever was
Kublai Kahn TX has a song called "Swan Song" that would be great for people to listen too, very strong and deep message that people need to hear.
One of the greatest bands of the 90's. They shaped my life. KNOW YOUR ENEMY!!!
Should have reacted to the live version with Maynard in it.
Great breakdown! ❤
Megadeth A Tout Le Monde is a must listen
How about The Offspring - Self Esteem, definitly has something most of us could relate to one way or the other
So much to say. I'll do my best to be succinct. First, thank you for going straight to the reaction. No read in, no preamble, just reaction. The title the video says it all. I appreciate that. Secondly, as for the song, it works in so many ways even to this day 30+yrs latter. Tim's bass line after Tom's solo is infectious. Then Tom's siren call on the guitar sends chills as we anticipate the song's finale. So good. Thirdly, on a personal level, this song has always been relatable to me, and even more so after the events of the last 4yrs. My father used to call me Oscar; not because he thought I would win a golden statue, but rather because I was a grouchy kid. The line in from the song "I was born to rage against 'em" really embodies who I'd always been and blew me away when I first heard it. The song was part of the grunge era, but set itself apart by really saying what so many other angsty bands were trying to, but seemed afraid to say.
Much love, cheers!
I don’t know about you guys, but this song is ringing so true right here right now in this day and age we’re living in
Wake Up should be next on your playlist!
i have that song as one of my alarm clocks on my phone, same with wake up dead by megadeth and wake up by korn
I'd also recommend the lyric video of this. Not the matrix one, but the one that covers the background samples delving into some of the conspiracy "theories" that were just that in the early 90s, and later turned into conspiracy fact.
@laxative_goofy I also use "Rise" by BoySetsFire. If she looks into them at any point, I'd say try the track "Rookie"
Aaah the nineties were amazing
More Rage please! (More Ren too!). Great reaction.
I love the fact that you know that Maynard sings That part of the song on the album! 😃 🎉
I think this channel is great, such positive views, and great reactions. Still suggesting Motionless in White, Thoughts and Prayers! Be easy, keep them coming.
MOAR! thanks
Correction REN reminds you of these guys, they blazed the trail. They will be the soundtrack to the revolution if it ever happens again.
Tool guitarist adam jones went to school with Tom from Rage his mother was their homeroom teacher... they played together in a high school band called electric sheep 💯 thanks for another great reaction
I have two song requests for you to react to:
Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars
Rainbow - Stargazer
I'd love to hear your analysis of those!
6:55 Me after I watch one of your videos. "Hmm.."
Fun Fact. Tom Morello (Rage Guitarist) went to school and jammed with Adam Jones (TOOL Guitarist). Not many high schools have 2 students that both became musical icons.
When did RATM get political /S/? This song was from their debut album in 1992 yet those of whom they've been singing about finally realized THEY are a part of the machine Zack et al are raging against and that always delights me to no end
Zack is part of the machine too 😂😂 He’s a Democrat. Democrats are all about CONTROL and war now. They want the government to tell us how we can live our lives. RATM is a joke now 😂 one of the best bands of all time but politically, they’re frauds.
We don't NEED THE key, WE'LL Break IT. LOVE RAGE
Love seeing your vids pop up!! Please do 21 Pilots!! Redecorate or Neongravestones or at the risk of feeling dumb so many good choices!!!
The Anchor “Masterpiece” or “One More Day” would be great for this channel because of your specialty and Deadlands “Villain” for the metal part.
Excellent videos. Love the content. Please take care of yourself though! You aren't a slave tovyour schedule! Take a break when you need to! This is for anyone reading this
I think the first time we listen to a song is better with the studio version, but well, live concerts by RATM are great.
All of them is simply great, and Know your enemy, for me, is in a top 10 by them for sure.
Not that I read every comment, but surprised I see anyone else pointing out that Maynard (Tool) sings the ”I got no patience now” interlude on the album version.
You need to review the original live performance with Maynard James Keenan from Tool singing the breakdown part when it said I’ve got no patience now. Look it up. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Overall, it’s better.
You should listen to boy with uke, he is a great artist!
Do more rage please so much of it matters and it was long ago it's crazy
Killer Mikes song “kill your masters” off his album R.A.P. Music is along the lines of your interpretation of this song too.
Would love to see your reaction to some of Nahko and Medicine for the People. I think you would appreciate his song writing and themes. Haven't seen many reaction videos to their music.
Rage is truly amazing and unlike any other band in its lyricism and messaging. Still wild that you got to rage before Chris Cornell in a mental health channel though :P
You should check out the song Bother by stone sour...
I personally suffer/deal with depression (yes in therapy) I have part of the lyrics tattooed on my fore arms.
"Once I hold on"(left arm) "I won't let go" (right arm)❤
interesting take on the song, I like it
When do we finally get some reactions to Venom Prison??? How have you not done tracks like Pain of Oizys, Judges of the Underworld, or The Exquisite Taste of Selfishness yet?
have a look at the story behind this concert. i love the internet sometimes
-
When Zach de la Rocha tells you to stand up, you stand up
today they all vacciners and Trump hater.. silent & ...vaxxed and boostered... oh and vaxxxedd again
Check out killing in the name of by them great song and incredible message in the lyrics.
I love your videos. I would like to make a recommendation. You should listen to some tracks from "Hell's Winter" by Cage. There are a lot of tracks by Cage I would recommend to people, but for this channel, I would start with this album, and I would pick these three songs in the following order: "Stripes," which is about when Cage's father, who was kicked out of the military for dealing heroin, took him and his pregnant mother hostage and tried to suic ide by cop, but ended up arrested instead. Next, "Too Heavy for Cherubs," which is Cage basically reliving when he was six years old and his father forced Cage to help him shoot up H. Finally, "Shoot Frank," which is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's about Cage's stepfather, and I think the title speaks for itself. Daryl Polumbo from Glassjaw is in that song. Listen, Cage was institutionalized, he was hooked on angel dust at one point, and his music and his life is THE rabbit hole for a channel like this. I would put Cage up there with Korn, NF, and Ren when it comes to real and raw music, especially if a therapist is analyzing it. Cage was Eminem's biggest rival back in the day, and no one has been on that level since. As someone who's watched tons of your videos, I promise you, Cage will make for some of the most interesting videos you critique. Once you look at "Hell's Winter," I would then look into the albums "Movies for the Blind" and "Depart from Me."
Rage against the machine wind below
Sun Tzu's Art of War quote about knowing your enemy is, "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles"
Excellent reaction.
Not sure where I’d go for requests but this seems as good of a place as any:
Day 1 of asking for Here Until Forever - In Flames
Need some 🌵back there. Snake plant needs new company. I'd give you enough plants to make it look like a jungle in there, but I get lost getting to NYC really easy ✌😁
Knowing my enemy is not about politics to me. All politicians speak to our weaknesses. Those weaknesses are what need to be addressed. Things may not, and probably will not, change by knowing your enemy. But it makes the enemy easier to deal with. And also much harder to side with any politician regardless which one you're rooting for.
What? The land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy. #armthehomeless
Awesome reaction and love RATM! I hope you can do a reaction to some Audioslave! They're RATM but teamed up with Chris Cornell as the singer. :)
I would love to hear your take on Silent Planet's "Panic Room." I looked for it but didn't see that you had done that one before.
I really recommend you check out Orbit cultures song Behold. It is about fighting inner demons as we age.
Tom Morello is a wizard 1100 years ago he was running around the English Isles calling himself Merlin
powerful
Maybe I'm the only person who shares this opinion, but I respectfully request that you react to studio productions, prior to the live renditions. The reason? I want to see you experience the same version of the song that we all did back in the day. Prime example, missing out on Maynard's contribution to the song, which is absolutely epic. Thank you.
Awesome as usual! I dare you to react to 'I Have a Special Plan for This World' by Current 93',
down in a hole by alice in chains please... just make sure you do the live one like you did nutshell
Man we need RATM right now
Muito bom
Thanks for doing Rage Against the Machine. Any chance of more Alice in Chains?
Dirt, Down in a Hole , Junkhead, Angry Chain to name a few ❤
Can you do “How did you love” by Shinedown (acoustic)?
Hi Taylor!
On the music side though, Tom Morello is a true master of melodies.
"It reminds me of Ren, in a way." That statement would make Ren so happy. He is a big fan of RATM.
any chance we could get more NF anytime soon?
I wud luv to c ur reaction to mourh for war by pantera if possible.
Michael from Cape Town South Africa
this is my favorite Rage song and much better than Killing In The Name.
Always interesting and exciting in this day and age to see and follow how subsequent generations, younger people and kids of today, think, perceive and feel about bands like Rage Against the Machine! My God, how we lost control as young people in our early 20s in the 90s at live concerts and festivals in Europe when these guys got on stage and blew you in the face with their sound and message - their opinion - it was simply indescribable!!! Unfortunately it never achieved anything, no, it got and is getting worse and worse, particularly in the USA, when you look at the psychopaths that got into the White House and want to get back in, and the billionaire friends of their supporters! They were a great band, great thoughts, messages that unfortunately most people today are not interested in and don't have the balls to take to the streets to really get the broken US system back on its feet and help its people far down and in the middle, and to ask the top 10% to pay up and severely restrict them so that they never get so much power for their own interests and accounts, familys Like Trump's, Musk's and Friends!
😂😂😂Keep voting blue. Liberalism is a DISEASE. Everything it touches, turns to shit. Look at California and New York. I bet you vote for Kamala 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You think the Democrats aren’t the machine? They literally want the government to have more control over us!? Are you seriously this blind? Billionaires!? You know that 75% of billionaires in this country donate to the DFL? You know why that is? You’re BRAINWASHED.
There is not a single reaction to the band Infant Annihilator, I suggest you check out one of these songs: Soil the Stillborn or Blasphemian.
Nice! RATM 👊 Next A CHANGE OF SEASONS - DREAM THEATER, my favorite song!
@heartsupport, please do a Circa Survive video
3:14 one of many reasons ppl joining the System baffles me
Please PLEASE DO Alice In Chains “Don’t follow”. I’m going through some stuff and it would mean a lot to me
'Testify' next
Analyze their first two full records.
5th request for the super group Hellyeah- Love Falls
Who would have ever thought Rage
would turn For The Machine?
Rage on behalf of the machine
