I always love a moss pole video! But do you know what has helped me just as much? Not being scared to snip a leaf or stem when needed! You helped me get over that apprehension :) We are all nervous about clipping our plants but sometimes its for the best!
You have inspired my 7 year old son a lot. Recently he shared his love for gardening and passion for plants in Ted Ed students talk. More power to you :)
I have more challenges extending my plastic backed poles. Besides attaching the garden stake to the back, the plastic backed aren’t as sturdy as my wire only poles and the weight of the wet pole can be a problem Trying to engineer my way through!! Thanks for your regular videos. They do help a lot
I have experienced success using a clear Grow Vertical Propstick 60 pole extension for my Splendid. So nervous about doing the cut during our winter, but both plants are thriving (the bottom now having two growth points). Very grateful for all your advice Jan 😊
Thank you for this tutorial. It was very clear and you answered all my moss pole related questions. My main issue has always been stability, esp. when it is wet and top heavy (my moss pole is currently over 1,2 m tall, after the previous chop, and needs extention very soon, it´s 11 cm wide plastic, which supports 3 plants). I´ll try some more tips from your video to improve its stability. I´m also considering adding some smaller stones to the bottom of the pot around the pole to increase its stability and bottom drainage.
Great content! In June this year, I started growing my small-leaf monstera this way, and it's doing so well! I was skeptical at first, but this is definitely the best way to grow them big indoors!
I was thinking about chop & extend this weekend, and was going to search through your past videos. I've had my adansonii on a moss pole for less than a year. This is my moss pole trial. I've chopped and extended it 3 times. It started off with 3" leaves & spindly stems. Leaves are now 8/9" long with very think stems. Three stems on the pole. I always chop a few inches off the bottom and extend from the top, now I'm going to chop about 10". At the moment it's nearly 6ft. Hopefully, next year I'll be able to extend the way you do. Thank you. Hi to Brad 🪴😺 ps sorry for the long message and yes the rod does keep the pole upright 😊
WOW the chopstick hack was extremely valuable to me, i can't tell you how many cuss words are floating around out there from me with those damn zip ties 😅
Holy cow Jan I'm the first comment buddy! Heck yeah! Have you ever considered putting something unconventional on a moss pole like a dragon fruit cactus? They climb trees and require support to retain a good growth structure and reaching for light and nutrients similar to aroids.
First comment, shmirst comment 🤣 Congrats! It is exiting and I think those of us that attain this unique title should deserve a prize of some kind… 🥇 🤣 🤗 you’re rad and so is Jan!
My first mosspole is now 2 years old. Even with knowing everything about extending it, I struggled big times with the last extension. xD Mainly because I had to add a plastic backing afterwards because the pole would dry out to fast during summer. The pole is now about 170cm high and a collection of trials and errors. :D As my segments are quite short, it already had 2 extensions. And... it stands without a garden stake... in a 17cm pot and decorative pot. But! Do not do this at home! 😂 It's getting unstable. And probably only didn't collapse until now because of the added plastic backing. But my Adansonii loves her life on the pole, so I probably should go and buy a garden stake soon... 😅
Hi, Jan! It was great meeting you at IAS plant expo in September!! I know you said these larger pots in this video you’re repotting was 20 cm diameter. How high is it on the outside please? Thanks so much.!😊❤
@@sydneyplantguy thank you so very much for the answer!! wonderful video as usual!! I’ve told so many people about you and your website. I feel like I’m the poster child for Sydney Plant guy.!🤣🤣🤣🤣
great tutorial! My only question is what do we do with the moss pole when we go on a vacation for a week and your moss pole require watering?! how do we go about that if you don't have someone to come and water it for you?
Hello! For pole stability I went a but extreme but would like to share it. So I have the pole tied to the plastic nursery pot, a cache pot that is a perfect fit for the nursery pot (I use an Ecopot for this), and then an outer pot for stability. Then the space in between the Ecopot and outermost pot I pour plaster with the Ecopot still inside (weighted down with weights so it won’t float). Once the plaster is cured that f**ker is going nowhere. Just don’t accidentally drop it on your foot. 😂
Any tips for keeping moss poles moist for extended periods? I can usually go a week, but going to be taking a longer vacation next year and not sure what to do.
I have a Rhapidophora tetrasperma with multiple thick vines. I have a wooden trellis that came with it but it really doesn’t work great and the plant needs it to grow leaves rather than runners What I’m curious in is whether you’ve made a super wide (8-10in maybe?) moss pole with a plastic backing to accommodate a plant like that?
all my plants are in chunky mix, have two in moss pole, now say moss pole is dry but chunky mix still moist not dry, can I just water the mosspole only, or I need to main medium and mosspole?
Last year I put a couple of m. subpinnata cuttings on a pole. Only one of the vines has been growing vigorously, and it's about time to chop and extend, but it looks kinda dumb having only one vine. Not sure what I should do exactly to fill it out at this point. I dont wanna harass it so much that it stresses it out so much I have to start over from square one, because it's the biggest climber in my collection 😫
You could do a chop & extend, and plant the top & the bottom next to each other. Extend them with just one pole in the middle & then have both bottom parts grow up one vine onto the new extension so u end up with 2 vines on that extension .... then you do it again & again and eventually you end up with lots of vines on the extension
So can you technically just chop the plant with a moss pole and not repot it? I mean you did say it was an extension so, is it possible just to have plant with a moss pole with the plant to act almost like a hanging plant?
I've been bingeing your videos lately and you're the only person I've come across who also has a cat called brad
Itsm definitely a superior cat name 😻😻

I agree, I think the open style poles are just so easy to work with :)
My favorite things in your set are the bowl of seedlings on the table and the Monstera by the kitchen, so fabulous. 🍀🌳

Oh lol I just asked for your advice on watering tips. Could have just waited for this vid 😅

They would need full sun to flower or fruit? I've seen lots of people growing them outside on structures.
Not really my cup of tea aesthetically tbh so I wouldn’t :)
@@sydneyplantguy have you ever considered anything other than aroids for a moss pole?

better safe than sorry hehe :)
What do you do if you dont want to extend your moss pole? - due to room of the ceilings
I have a video in my Moss Pole Playlist where I give 3-4 options of what u can do when ur plants reach the top :)
I think a cable tie gun would be a beneficial tool to add to your gardening tool kit.
Omg that exists ?! :O
😻🌿🌱😻
Any tips for keeping moss poles moist for extended periods? I can usually go a week, but going to be taking a longer vacation next year and not sure what to do.
You could set up a drip irrigation system but I personally just ask a friend to help out & then return the favour :)

Yes :) I have some videos about my adansonii & dubia in my moss pole playlist that are on thick plastic backed poles :)
Very informative as usual ! Love how you can’t stop adding more details 😄
Haha I can just see the questions coming through so I’m trying to anticipate them haha
Do you have a link for the clear plastic pots?
All going ok ?
💕
And I have a question... What do You think about mineral wool, the cubes? I'm thinking about making a mineral wool (moss) pole...
Mmm never used or heard anything about it, so i have no thoughts :)
A moss pole is it just for support or can this keep the roots moist ? Do we still have to water the same or ?
yes its a vertical pot extension
all my plants are in chunky mix, have two in moss pole, now say moss pole is dry but chunky mix still moist not dry, can I just water the mosspole only, or I need to main medium and mosspole?
Just water the pole :) use less volume lf water
@ Awsome thank you kindly.
what fertilizer do you use for moss? also only moos
Linked in the description :)
Why when you chop and extend do you put the top in a pot since their is no racine? Is the plant going to grow racine in the pot or only in the pole?
assuming racine = roots?! Roots will grow from the pole into the pot
@ merci🫶
Yes racine = root :-)
I don't have moss where I live, can I replace moss with cocopeat?
Would be way too fine and make a mess but u could use coco chunks :)
Nice hair by the way ☺
