Hey all :) Hope this video helps you get through the colder season :) Forgot to mention: be realistic with your expectations .... you will see yellow leaves, you will see a lack of growth, you will have failures. I had HEAPS of struggles over winter which I shared with you over the last few months ! So don't see it as a reflection on you as a plant parent :) just hang in there & better times will come :) Stay warm & happy growing Jan & Brad xx
Awww you are so sweet to be thinking of us over here in the northern hemisphere! I love Brad 😻 you can tell how well you take care of him based on his personality, I find with my cats now and one i had in the past, the more room you give them the more their personality will shine. Like how you talk to him like an individual, and treat him with respect as his own being, he notices that and loves you more for it and he can really be himself ❤ I love it! Anyway thanks for all the help I have 1 moss pole right now with a silver sword on it, and learning how to only water enough to dampen the pole. Idk why I thought you just need to drench it everytime lol, I'm a bit of a Neanderthal sometimes, so you have helped me refine my ways 🎉🌿💚
5 minutes in and for sure I’m going to have to rewatch because I can’t stop watching Bradley! I really want to hear what you are saying Jan but the cuteness 😂
I live in Virginia in the US. It feels like walking into a sauna when I open the door to go in my south facing plant room🥵🤣 I keep the humidity around 70-80% and the temperature around 72-76 F (22-24 c) I have a lot of grow lights too and run them 12 hrs/day. I think the kids are happy so we will see as colder weather sets in. It hasn’t really been cold except for 1 wk in October. Love your videos and love Bradley❤
❄Great tips! I'm in Niagara Falls, Canada, and my plant room (and office) is in a North-facing sunroom with single-pane windows, so winter is challenging. I have a space heater, humidifier, and grow lights and I also use heat matts. Last winter I even gave my plants little sweaters. :)
I heard saran wrap helps hold the heat in if you wrap them while it’s warm in the room during the day. Maybe some of those Weather proof, glass, and metal IKEA cabinets , converted to extra large terrariums wouldn’t be a bad idea to holding some of the heat from the heat mats.
Unfortunetly ❄️❄️❄️ even though I know how to take care of my plants during the winter I like to hear you and it's always a pleasure to do some plant chores in your company 😁🌿💚
All great tips Jan. As we approach Winter, I remember last year we went down to -50 Celsius for one week in January in Edmonton Alberta (very cold). The lighting was the easy part. With the furnace running steady to keep the house warm, it affected the humidity levels. It was very dry in the house. My plants did well, and were happy to see Spring come :)
❄️ Already getting down to freezing here in Norway and it’s getting dark around 17:00 (5pm) now, and it will getting dark earlier. Luckily for my plants the grow lights are on for 14 hours a day:) Bradley was so cute today just laying there
Keeping my whole flat heated throughout the day, and having grow lights on for at last 12 hours, has really helped me care for my plants this autumn. I shocked a monstera and two epipremnums during a too vigorous repotting. Keeping them moist and under a growlight has allowed them to recuperate, with only a few leaves lost.
🌞 Central Queensland the garden is exploding in to life with the heat and my watering! My kangaroo foot fern fronds are up to my waist already. Love this time of year😎
There’s a lot of things people can say about Florida but I can garden all year round and I’m very grateful for that 🪴🥰 Loved chatting with you in Miami IAS show. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge with the world. Best channel on UA-cam!!! xo
❄️ I really appreciate the good tips! It’s pretty humid in the Pacific Northwest in the winter time. Just keeping up with the lights, so I can at least help my plants stay alive and hopefully thrive.
I keep a lot of mine grouped together, great for humidity, awful for pest control… just did a major treatment for spider mites, mealies and 1 solitary thrip 1.5 months ago… just found green aphids, white flies and mealies took over my collection… I’m on my 3rd day of treating and cleaning… however! All the treating and washing plants has brought the humidity up by 15%! Lol
Thanks Jan ❄️ for the winter tips. I was just saying to myself I need a video on winter survival just to motivate me. First time having anthurium babies and I don’t want them to die. Because I have grow lights, humidifiers, and heat mats for my sweet potatoes slips, and I need them survive the winter.
Thanks to the good Tips i'm from Germany and we are going into winter, i need all times of the year a dehumidifier because if i don't have one the walls all get moldy 😢😅 Give bradly a good cuddles from me.😊
Fill a big pot with water indoors use a kmart fish pump and heater for perfect warm humitidy your plants/animals will love to drink plus the sound of running water in your plant rooms magic the warms so nice and natural I have aerial roots growing like crazy at the moment 😂❤❤
@sydneyplantguy it's been perfect for south Australia I wish I could show you a photo of my aerial roots trust me it's a game changer you have nothing to lose by trying :) won't be able to have it on much longer with the heat coming
☀️ here but my cuprea is struggling after 3 inflos in a row. Old leaves are yellowing and dropping. New growth now has been stuck in limbo for like weeks. Always jelly of yours. ❤🐈
I buy 20 inchX30 inch sheets of clear acetate paper from the local art store for a couple dollars and line the back half of the wire moss pole. Just slip it inside the back half before you add the moss. I suppose you could just use the acetate for the d shape as well and only add the wire to the front. You could add holes to connect them with a drill or sauntering soldering pen. Clear acetate helps hold in some of the moisture and keeps the roots from growing out the back.
First year going into winter as a houseplant (aroid) owner! I can use all the tips I can get! ❤ thank you! ❄️ hearts from Los Angeles! Hopefully we get some rain, we are still having wildfires! 🐈 hi Bradley!
Sorry Jan, Bradley stole the show :D ❄ With the point I heard I definitely agree, even though my experiences are quite different due to different climate. I live in Denmark, it rains a lot in autumn/winter, it´s still relatively dry inside because of the heating, definitely below 50%. I don´t think I have ever noticed a plant struggling due to that. But I don´t have that many big aeroids as you. I have a big adinsonii and already had it last winter and it was just fine. and my alocasia are also fine in winter. My plants are in lechuza pon and selfwatering pots if that makes a difference for that and I feel that with this setup temperature is more important. If the plant is on a cold surface it sits in cold water and they don´t like that and I see that less with plants in soil. I cling wrap my poles for vacation, definitly works and I didn´t see any mold even after being wrapped for 2-3 weeks and the pole still being moist.
I totally agree with what you say about conditions, there are plenty of plants that I would LOVE to grow in my house ,but i'm not getting them since i can't offer them enough light and humidity, so they will not grow to their potential and look great which is what i'm looking for in the first place. so, they'll stay in my wish list till i move houses or get them a greengouse and grow lights ready.💰💰💰
Hi Jan, I'm getting ready with my plants and fur babies for the season🐈🐈🐕🪴. Autumn has been mild so far here in the US, but I've got my humidifiers ready to go. Winter will be here before you know it. (Soon, I'll be singing Jungle Bells, lol)It's a cozy time for us, but honestly, I'm pretty consistent with the conditions, so my plants just keep growing. I'll have a few that will go into dormancy still, but for the most part, they just keep doing their thing. I love it!! Thanks for the advice!!❤❄️
❄️Thank you Jan for the video! I live in Finland and now is getting darker and darker each day do just needed to order some growlights more. Humidity is gonna be a little problem, at least when snow will arrive.
Great tips thanks Jan 😍 looking forward to vid on dormant plants 🤗 I reckon Brad loves to hear you talking. You can see his little ears responding 😺😻 🌞
yes, in subtropical climates (as you have in Sydney and we have in south Florida), having the heat on isn't a problem for humidity. While it is our dry season, it is also very humid (our lowest humidity is actually late spring when it might drop to 40%). I keep the house at a minimum 73 (22.7) and even with the heat, the RH is still 65%.
❄️☃️ Here in Germany I realized I have now 20 grow lights I use everyday. Just took the last one I had saved today. Luckily I always had some in storage. The change of light in the last month has been really dramatic.
Brad is so cute 💚💚 Thank you for this helpful video. I already knew most of the winter care rules but some are new and also it’s always good to have a reminder 😄 My tropical plants are still on the balcony and actively growing as the beginning of autumn is very mild this year where I live. I hope that I can leave most of them outside till the end of November 🤞🏻🤞🏻 because they need so many grow lights to survive in my appartement 😅❄️❄️
🍁🥶 awesome tips as always..I started my moss pole this summer looking at ur video so it will be my first yr learning about this moss pole in my apt..will keep temp at 70 F. Happy summer to you!
Thanks for accommodating Northern hemisphere current seasonal information. To grow mildew/ mold, I've noticed as outdoor temps drop, windows stay closed, so mildew forms where high humidity condensation forms. You might have too much airflow and consistency in temps and humidity to grow mold?? Luckily I haven't found any in the actual moss poles.😻
❄It's funny, every fall, I forget what did last year to help my plants survive the winter (mainly my window plants). I think I just move them away from the glass a few inches. 🤷😁
Hey Jan, thanks for the video! ❄️❤ Going into Winter I unfortunately See mold building Up on several of my Moss poles.. 😩 I tried spraying them with 3% Hydrogenperoxide and I could literally See the H2O2 eat away the mold, Jet it was Not all gone and/or came right back .. in all Fairness this is my First Winter with Moss poles and I hardly ever let them dry out until they are crunchy 😅. During Summer I got away with it, but I suppose there is No way around it now. 🤷 Lots of Love 😊
❄️☃️⛄️❄️❄️ I truly thank you for this content and thinking of us in the colder winter months! You are inspiring as you are selflessly helping others with different challenges than you are going through simultaneously! Lots of love ❤️ Ginger
Haven’t really thought of that! It’s not really that good of a photo compared to professional photos taken there (it’s a very popular location hehe) so wouldn’t feel comfortable charging ppl for it
❄ You saying in 6 months time you will go back to winter and we will move into summer really made me sad. I dislike cold weather and I did not like to be reminded of the fact that I will be running around in multiple layers of clothing for at leat 5 months now :( Great video though, and I guess I ever get depressed about winter in europe I´ll just watch one of your videos!
❄In Canada and winter is starting! Electric heat saps ALL the humidity so we have many poles in groups and water more frequently. Miss seeing AJ and Tim...youre hogging the spotlight ;) LMAO

Thank you! I think I need to adjust my watering to match my new conditions, cooler temps! My spiritus sancti got a yellow leaf ❄️😢😭

❄Winter's comming! I'm looking forward to ⛷
I've bought lamps for my plants and they are happy and new leaves are growing. So I'm also happy.
Thank you for the info. I’m in Canada and we’re heading into winter 🥶 ❄️
❄Installed my first grow-light(s) this year. Last year during autumn and winter a lot of plants looked so... sad. So, 'light therapy' it is! 😁💚🪴
Light is just the most important !! Ur plants will thank you:)
I cant focus on what youre saying when bradley is on camera - hes just so adorable!!
it's my sneaky way of making you all watch the WHOLE video haha :D

Pests are definitely having a harder time in winter too from my experience so hopefully u’ll have better lucky soon :)
Thank You for the Nice Video . In this time it's difficult to bring our Plants over the Winter ❄️

Sydney plant guy try it out for your self I promise you its a game changer ❤
Sounds interesting
@RavenChick_23 try it I promise you your indoor plants will grow FASTER and in winter is a super cheap way to heat bedrooms
Sounds great in theory but it’s already too humid in winter as it is but maybe a good option for ppl in dry climates :)
@sydneyplantguy it's been perfect for south Australia I wish I could show you a photo of my aerial roots trust me it's a game changer you have nothing to lose by trying :) won't be able to have it on much longer with the heat coming

Thanks :) yes ease up on watering & keep airflow up :)
17 Celsius is good for me and my plants in winter.
Think anything above 15 should not cause any issues with your plants … but I personally get really cold so I don’t enjoy anything under 22 😂
❄️ I can't find pot of gold emoji but in south Florida we really don't get too many cold days
❄
