  • Today we are converting a cheap Pit Bike into electric power with a 6000w 72v electric motor I purchased from Electro & Co. Instead of removing the gas engine and replacing it with the electric motor, I wanted to still have the gears the Pit Bike originally had. so I figured out a way to remove the crankshaft and replace it with a sprocket so I could run it with the electric motor. I'm very excited to finish this project and see what this thing can do!!

      @@marcthefastz1000 I actually just bought a fully loaded cat trike that came with a 49cc motor on it already - the way I see it, with the regen I can ride the battery till it's empty, run the gas motor and regen battery + solar panels, if I can get enough back in the battery there's potential for 600+ miles of travel without having to find fuel. Being able to select your own motor/battery/controller combination allows you to really tune the application. I plan to upgrade it with a belt drive and enviolo CVT hub - it works if I limit the continuous torque under 125Nm, and in a range/road specific application high torque isn't needed especially if you've got gear reduction.
      I want to build some hotrods but to handle the amount of instantaneous power EV can apply without shredding the drive train I'm looking at junkyards for HD belt drive trains and old shaft drive yamaha/hondas to upgrade, the powertrains are easy to find/source but getting a nice husk that doesn't have an engine already in it is the same problem I'm having launching my Kei truck EV upgrade. I'd have to buy one and sell off the power plant which usually doesn't recover the extra cost because they're *tiny* motors, subarus or not.

    Thank you! I've been waiting for someone to do this. I get that there are losses but think it would be sooo much more fun to still have a manual transmission. Get the best of both worlds. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

      u loose some power to friction but when cruising i think it will be as efficient or maybe more ! his project is not for cruising but u get what i mean

      @@m.i1343 Absolutely will not be more efficient than direct drive under no circumstances. The amount of additional friction is substantial.

      @@bradley3549 i really don't know what to expect m8 ! my ebike though tend to have shitty efficiency when approaching its full rpms and while keeping it full throttle . i was thinking that maybe when cruising , u will be able to keep the rpms low hence having the same or slightly more range

    just a suggestion, you no longer need the gas tank, gut it out , make the outer shell a battery cover.

      Exactly. Have done this a few times. Works great. Just make sure you get some air flow through there to cool the battery and speed controller.

      I kind of don't understand why you want the gearbox, I understand that the actual engine is part of the structure but the speed controller usually becomes the gears,well I know nothing about this but in say electric vehicles the speed controller is usually the reduction for lack of a better word even electric forklifts use only the differential.

    I was wanting to do that with an old dirt bike years ago but then I ended up in a wheelchair. Glad to see someone doing it. Always thought it was a good idea. The electric motors and batteries are better nowadays and I think easier to find useable ones. Good job. You put a lot of trust in JB Weld.

    27:50 I recommend you to use a piece of glass if you want to sand something flat, and just glue the sandpaper with tape on the corners, because the glue interfere under the sandpaper making it not flat, on PC overclocking we use glass with sandpaper to sand our processors IHS to flat it out to get better heat dissipation so the CPU can run faster and cooler and it works really well.

      a certified ground surface plate can be had for not much money if you look around.. most people don't even know what they are or care and almost give them away... gives way better results than ordinary glass although glass trick does work in a pinch ive used it myself.. glass tends to flex a bit and not get things "perfect" but close enough for most jobs it seems...

      Agreed, I used the glass for lapping mating surfaces on waterjet pumps🤙 it was usually a 600 wet so I would just soak it and it stuck to the glass pretty well on its own.

      granite surface block is cheap. throw down water. toss your paper on it. more water. get to work. no adhesives used.

    I've thought about doing this for years but I was gonna run the sprocket on the outer part of the crank like where the stator goes so I could completely seal the bottom end so the crank could get oil as well. super excited to see this unfold love the crawler cant wait to see it in real action thanks for the great content Chris

    A tip for welding on cast aloominyum cracks- grind a slot into the crack (let's be honest why else do you normally weld it) on both sides, like a beveled plate joint you'd do for some big bevel plate- assuming you learned as a boilermaker- never mind. Grind a slot in both sides to get that surface that absorbs oil cut out, and run a cold bead, then burn in slowly on the other side making sure it's a fully melted in joint (no edge lines- just puddle), using the other bead as a backer and letting the shittiness of the casting get homogenized in the excess. Then grind what you need to off with a die grinder, ideally air.
    I learned a lot of tricks once I stopped welding in basically a cleanroom setting..

      LOL, I spent many years welding tubes, cast casing, and everything else you can find on a Boilermaker job. I learned alot of tricks working with the older guys that made me a much better welder in the long run. Dont see many mentions of Boilermakers on here and its good to read one now and then. We did quite a few tank jobs using the process you mentioned above of welding both sides. Usually we would weld one side then gouge out a nice clean seam in the backside to weld up
      Edit; One of the few metals I never welded on a boiler job is aluminum. Welded tons of chrome, stainless of every grade, carbon the same, some titanium and even did some brazing. But never aluminum, played with it a little on a pipe job a few times but thats about it

      6kw is also the rated output. Depending on how the controller works, peak output could be much higher. Should be a little ripper

    DUDE! That crank replacement was a work of art, you should be proud of it. And I totally agree, even though gears aren't really needed for electric motors, having gears makes them a million times more interesting. I only hope electric cars will have them someday.

    Would have looked good with the sprocket on the side in the cover that the electrical went in then the motor would have been more centered. Looks grate as is though. Can’t wait to see it preform.

      Agree, then also by just covering the top part would make it oiltight and no welding would be needed. Also the seal plate would double as electrical motor mount.

    I like that you retained the clutch and gearbox. I electrified a KX 125 about 15 years ago. Direct drive. Still in use today. Registered for the street. Way more fun riding something you created yourself.

    For a good base for trueing surfaces with Emory cloth I use half inch plate glass. That works great, very flat. I use it to true up hand planes. Love this build.

    One upgrade would be top use pinion gears - more work, but you could mount the motor vertical in line like the former top cases.

      Thinking the same with counter rotating crank halves but then arrived at a one piece crank with a bearing mounted gear on the non drive side to take up any gear climb forces. Definitely worth giving a lot more thought to. I suspect you're on to the best solution possible especially if a bit of gearing is needed for the electric motor RPM. Haven't seen the specs yet.

    Awesome Chris. I seen one of those Asian channels do that and that guy is brilliant. I’ve seen him take the same kind of motor you’re working on and turn them into V-Twins and in-line 4 cylinders. But I was very excited to see you do something like that. I’d love to see you convert a single cylinder engine to a multi cylinder engine too. I know you’re smart enough to do it and it would be awesome content.

    I know you like to try different things, but I'm wondering about the additional width and additional weight how this will really handle in the dirt. And with a gear box there will be additional friction which the battery will have to power, so you'll probably need a bigger battery than you would without the gear box. It will be interesting to see the conclusion of this project.

      it's really insignificant. You have advantages using the clutch and gearbox just as the ALTA Redshift did. As someone who has done the same thing with a CR 125 dirtbike direct drive to the rear sprocket and changed to using the 125 gearboxes. It's much better with the gearbox. Especially with an inrunner-type high RPM motor. Direct to the rear sprocket with a chain lacked torque. You would need a hub motor converted to accept a pinion gear. In the end, the weight is still the same. The inrunners just like Chris is using don't have much torque like outrunners. A gearbox or a major reduction is a must.

      @@FarmerFpv yep its far easier for a small motor to trade high RPM for torque then tor try and make a motor deliver that torque directly. also motors that can deliver that much torque directly draw fairly high currents that means bigger inverter and more cooling.

      @@phalanx3803 From what I am seeing, most bldc motors only run 5-6k rpm. The build I am planning is a 96v 250amp (higher volts = lower current) and trading some of the excessive torque for hp. Hopefully making it actually highway worthy.

    JB weld will hold for a bit but the proper way to fix a crack is to drill a small hole at each end of the crack to stop it from spreading then grind it to Grove the crack and weld from both sides basically replacing the fractured metal with new. But if your going to JB weld it at least drill the ends so it doesn't spread

      Steel stick would have been better for the crack. I've seen him use it before and was surprised he didn't use it this time. Oh well. That epoxy resin sucks!

    I just finished doing a full case split rebuild on my 85 ACT250R and I ended up putting my parts in a toaster oven to off gas the cases, cylinder, and head before painting. It worked great. 500°F for 15 minutes each.

    Couldn't you just hook up the sprocket to the flywheel side? That way there's already a seal, you would only need to machine a tapered sprocket to fit where the flyweel was. You don't even need to machine a new crankshaft, but doing it and getting rid of the counterweights is definitely better

    Hey, love all your videos-big thumbs up from a fellow tinkerer. So I just wanted to put it out there for future video ideas that an AGNI/Lynch motor would literally be perfect for an electric motor repower project on this or any other smaller vehicle project:
    The AGNI or Lynch motor is a unique axial gap permanent magnet brushed DC electric motor. The motor has a pancake-like shape and was invented by Cedric Lynch in 1979.
    The Lynch motor is built from ferrite blocks sandwiched between strips of metal, instead of conventional copper coil windings, and is held together purely by magnets. The motor is available in several sizes (6.6 lb) to (24 lb) weight and provides a power of 1.5 kilowatts (2.0 hp) to 11 kilowatts (15 hp) within an efficiency range of 80% to 90%.
    Any voltage battery up to 90 volts can be directly connected or a variety of controllers will work such as cheap PWM or golf cart controllers of many power levels. I've even ran mine (AGNI 15kw capable) off a 3Kw brushed motor controller for an ebike. What's amazing is the torque produced: I once hooked a single 18650 battery directly and the shaft spun about 90 RPM and had an incredible torque for such low voltage and motor speed. A 9v battery spun it about 300rpm and you could not hold the shaft from spinning with your hand, 48 volts is about 2,500 rpm and it will rip a back tire right off an electric bike. A very interesting motor so I thought I'd throw it out there, thanks again for excellent and interesting content.

      @@bgdwiepp They're actually small in stature for power output being pancake motors of a high power to weight/size ratio. When I got the 500lb 2 seater racing go kart it had one of these motors and I couldn't believe it was capable of moving the cart 50mph, but it did. So far I've (re) powered an ebike, a small dirt bike, a jet ski, an antique hand tractor, and now I'm powering a boat motor for my plastic bass boat with it.

    I know you’re duplicating another build, and it’s too late to change it now, but I think it would be really cool if the motor had mounted where the old cylinder was and drove the crank via some bevel-gears. It would have a footprint and planform much closer to the original engine, probably get a couple double-takes from people not realizing it’s electric.

    I use glass for smoothing those case halfs or atv valve covers or single cylinder heads. As a at home make shift smoothing leveling job. Great work, I hope to get a lath some day

    Im.with you on chain cover. Let's not over complicate the seal though. Piece of fuel line for weedwacker split with razor will slip over edge of guard and seal great. I've done with in a pinch when didn't have grommet for hole in metal to run wires through. Love ur hard work for sure

    This is freaking cool, with the battery situation you could possibly find 2 slimmer batteries and run them in parallel and mount them on both sides of the frame where the gas tank was.

    I think instead of doing all the welding on the cases, I might have built a new shaft as you did but not put the sprocket on the inside of the cases. I would have made the new shaft to have it come out far enough on the alternator side to mount the sprocket. Build a plate as you did to seal of the cases. Build the motor mount off this plate to hold the motor over enough to line up with the sprocket on the new shaft.
    This way you wouldn't alter the cases enough so they couldn't be switched back.
    I have thought about doing such a swap on one of my parts bikes just to see if it would work. It has an oil pump that would have to stay functional. It pressure feeds the crank bearings and up to the head to oil the cam, lifters and valves. It also pressure lubes the bearings and shift forks in the transmission.
    Being a larger bike than the one your working on I would want a larger motor. At least 30 HP.. The stock engine is a 50 HP.

    cool project .. but if u want a real challenge put a pinion gear on the electric motor and a ring gear on the new crank you made ,, not only would it fit perfect in front of the case it would make no noise and seal every thing up as well . just a thought ...

    OSET has every part you'd want, including frames, on their site.
    Not an affiliate, just another person who found out the hardest thing about making your own EV is finding frames that ride like you want them to that *don't* have a power plant in them already. I'd be building a trials-like bike up, but took a bad step after a rafting trip about 5 years ago and smashed up my legs and spine.
    I am disabled so I'm working on building up a fat tadpole as I get money for the upgrades - even with one functional leg I've broken the stock unit a bunch of times (I ride hard, why do it if you're not gonna). Some things you can't exercise your way out of so I'm finding out what I can build onto a recumbent frame. So far, it's not aggravating my actual injury site (residual damaged spinal column after rafting trip) but I need a pretty smart pedal assist to work around a couple things I see might be a problem once I can get further out into woods, both in the EV's range/capability and mine (if I offload the bad leg correctly, it will reduce my pain/seizure trigger management a LOT) and trying to go 100% like I used to just because the bad parts are somewhat offloaded ended like I hoped it wouldn't...
    I literally can't get back out until I can get the conversion completed - not everyone can afford 4500+ USD for a handi-capable vehicle of any sort and the only way I'm going to get back into the woods is to build it myself, because nobody is going to do it for me and I'm lucky to even have a place to live at this point.
    The capability that EVs put in the footprint they occupy is incredibly enabling, in product design and quality of life. My ultimate goal is to get an EV service and restomod shop off the ground at some point, but first things first - getting untrapped from the house has to be done before anything else can happen, and my rides are my way back to freedom and complete independence again.
    People taking the time to record, edit, produce, publish, and manage channel are making it possible for me to figure this out myself instead of spending all that time just trying to figure out who has the parts and knowledge for me to learn from. I have a LONG list of Patreon I need to support when I get out of this bastille my body has trapped me in.
    If you keep getting up, gravity doesn't matter. Remember that whenever you're feeling heavy.

    This is sweet. The automotive program at my vocational school has been converting a 5 speed Chevy s10 to an electric truck using a forklift motor paired to the factory transmission with a custom machined bellhousing. It’s pretty sweet having different ranges and is probably the only way I’ll ever be into EVs lol.

    Great build. I want to do this to a former two stroke scooter keeping the variator. Crank already sealed just not sure if rpm is high enough for the variator. Motor was at about 7k rpm. Else could go through the stator side.
