This amazing creation is the first and only quad core 13 inch Unibody MacBook Pro- a model that Apple never made! But Apple fan and certifiable mad lad @dosdude1 didn't let that stop him. This MacBook achieves a record by taking advantage of a weird quirk of Intel processors from this time period... How much faster is it compared to a stock dual core 13 inch MacBook Pro, and can the chassis cool such a beefy chip? Let's find out!

Really glad you got a chance to take a look at this one, as it is probably the most worthwhile CPU upgrade I’ve done yet to one of these Macs. Brings it almost up to 15” levels of performance!
Meh, still stuck on Catalina, which is unsupported
Hey @dosdude1, thank you for your contributions to the Mac scene. Thank you for all your great work on the patchers.
Can I pay you to upgrade my 13 inch 2015 mb😂
@@yomommastupid dude, just buy a new MacBook Pro. Don’t waste money on that ancient crap
@@emilsecker7881 I know they gotta use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to run Ventura on them. The quad core would run it great.
My aunt recently passed away, when I cleaned up her storage I found a SEALED IN BOX 2012 13" MBP. I paid $25 for RAM upgrade and swapped out the platter drive with my excess SSD. Followed the hack to install Ventura, etc. Now it's quite usable for non-demanding tasks.
Sealed in box - a better use would be auction it for $$$ among collectors and Mac lovers.
Dosdude is such a great guy. I'm happy to see him get more recognition;
By the way, thanks for the shout out guys. I’m doing my video on it currently ❤
Oh my God, it’s the man himself! Absolute legend. Awesome video! Love how Apple said 8GB max RAM when this bad boi could hold 16GB.
I had a mid-2012 MBP 13, it was my project computer and I really enjoyed upgrading it as far as it would go. That included installing Catalina using Dosdude's excellent instructions.
I still remember Hrutkay’s video planning that 3.0GHz upgrade, and wondering for all these years what happened to that project. Well, here we are!
I can't give you guys enough likes on these vidoes. Dosdude is a freaking genius.
He’s not ! Put m1 in there then that’s impressive
@@Poochie78 Dosdude is still a genius; but let's take the bar a few steps higher-put an m1 chip in a 12-inch macbook, and upgrade that macbook to have a Thunderbolt port instead of just the USBC port. Of course that'd require a lot of custom board design, but wouldn't it be an impressive feat?
Who besides me would like to see more Luke & Dosdude collabs?
Keep it up guys!
Still using the 2012 Pro till today. Light Ps, 100+ frames figma, 20+ chrome tabs, no issue (occasional max-out fan speed). we just had 10 year anniversary recently🎉 this macbook lasts really well
Same I'm watching on this MBP mid 2012 13 inch
Dosdude is amazing. I love this stuff!
Luke Miani and DOSDude1's powers are increased when they collab on videos.
Indeed!!!
I love this sooo much. Thanks, Luke & DOSDude! 💜
DOSDude is THE man! I have a lot of respect for him! Never knew what he looks like though so great to put a face to the name! Him and I briefly chatted back in 2018 about him bulletproofing my 15 inch Late 2011 MBP. But it still hasn’t died on me yet! So I never needed it so far! 😂 I’m so impressed by how far he’s come though. Would love to send him one of my machines someday…
Time to upgrade that thing. It’s stuck on High Sierra which has been unsupported for YEARS
@@emilsecker7881 It can run ventura I think with OCLP just fine
DosDude1 is my hero! Been using his Mac OS unofficial upgrade patchers for years and so thankful for his work (:
Those featuring with dosdude are always cool & fun to watch, can't wait til the next video with him!
Certified mad lad
I was just talking all excited like this with my dad and he got overwhelmed.. glad to be in good company!!!
Bro Dos dudes like everywhere YO! Love his channel. Super useful. All the best
Love to see this fellow, so simple and humble yet so bright and motivated.
Awesome work, so interesting. Thanks for sharing, it would be nice if any of the retina early 2013 or macbook air could also achieve this 4-core upgrade.
Dosdude really IS a cool dude! He should be very proud for the niche he's carved out. He's on his way to legend status.
Nobody cares lol after you watch this video you don’t even mention dosdude so shut up
Love your content man :)
I really enjoy watching the videos featuring the mad lad legend dosdude1. Those moded old macs are punching down later models 😂
DOSDude is honestly a legend! Need to see that Quad Core Air!
Cool. I have the 2.9ghz, 16 gb ram and two 1 TB SSD (a fortune in storage in todays MacBooks lineup 😀). Now I have to get a quad core processor! One of the things I like about this unibody macbook is that it is cool most of the time. The only intel mac I had that could comfortably be used as a laptop😀
Should really upgrade that thing. Get onto Apple silicon
@@emilsecker7881 Like he already said a 2TB SSD would cost a lot on Apple silicon MacBooks
@@Pasi123 so? That hardware on whatever he’s using is still crap
@@emilsecker7881 You don't need fast hardware for simpler tasks like web browsing etc.
@@emilsecker7881 It is not my primary mac, and I bougt an Macbook Air 2020 M1 Air - it was the first mac that was as comfortable to use as a laptop as the MBP2012😀 I sold it afterwards since I still use Windows and use a 2019 MBP 16" i9 as my primary machine (it is very hot - not good laptop material).
I think it is a bit fun to see how long the MBP mid 2012 will last. 11 years, and it is very usable. The most lacking thing is probably going to be the OS.
Love your work man!
I wish it was in the form of the 2008 unibody MacBook, but I am happy that dosdude is now getting the recognition he rightfully deserves
Two legends!!!!! Woooooooowwwww!!!!! Thanks for the upgrades!!
Yes! A thousand times yesss! You and Collin need to do all these swaps!! Maybe a livestream?
Id love to see a quad core MBA and retina 13 MBP! Thanks for the video :)
Wow, DosDude are a genius, I'd love to see a MacBook Air quad core haha
After running a MBP 2013 13" Retina thingy for over a decade, I was just blessed with a birthday surprise of a MBA 13" M2 base model. I've always loved the 13 inch format and unibody design (my first was a 2007 MBP 13"). Cool stuff. $0.02
given that I had a 2014 MacBook Air and I did start my video editing carer on it, I know it takes seconds for that machine to thermal throttle with a dual core i5 4th gen, I can only imagine how much time will it take a MacBook Air quad core to thermal throttle
If you have a Setapp subscription, Clear VPN can be had for no additional cost.
YES!!!!! DOSDUDE. Love your work.
Dosdude upgraded my 13” to the quad core chip and installed iBoff’s NVMe board. The speed that the MacBook Pro has now is amazing! Before I get the “why would you spend the money on this?”, this Mac is special to me. That said, Dosdude is the man and I couldn’t be happier!
I’m still using my mid 2012 and I’ve been thinking about getting the 15” air. Honestly I would do this instead. Too many memories with my Mac.
Thank you for everything dosdude 🐐
Amazing stuff! I also love a good crossover the channel.
Nice to see this shown off here. Makes me want to buy some cheap MacBooks and upgrade the CPUs.
I had a 2011 17" quad core macbook pro and enjoyed using it till sadly the graphics card on mother board failed. Its now gathering dust somewhere.
I own the late 2011 base model MBP, it's pretty dope, restored and upgraded. If I ever get around to buying a 2012 one in great condition I'll probably restore and upgrade it all, CPU swap too.
Soon as I read the title of this video I wondered what delightful abomination DosDude's cooked up haha
Nice!
There should be enough room to put an additional heatpipe!
Looking forward to those videos
Quad Core11-inch MacBook Air mod would be a lot of fun to watch
I wondered when you’re gonna feature it as soon as I saw it on dosdude1 channel.
i dont miss my 2012 mbp. that thing was always running hot.
dosdude looks like the kind of guy to put a quad core cpu into a macbook that wouldn't normally come with quad core cpu
WWWHHHHAAAAATTTT?? Luke and DOS Dude on the same project video. Super cooooollllio! Great project too!
holly shit Dosdude
i have been keeping a 2012 mbp as a daily driver until june of this year thanks to The Dude
I have a 2012 13" MBP with an i5.. id absolutely LOVE to have it upgraded!
I definitely want the Quad-Core Ivy Bridge MacBook Air video.
Thanxs so much for this video...
My mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro was my trustworthy and upgradable friend for 9 years. In 2021 I finally put it to rest (via trade in) and bought the new 2021 14" MacBook Pro.
Seems like a very cool dude, and although I'd never use it, a VERY cool mod! Too bad resoldering cpus is not feasible for most of the population like a socketed CPU, but at least it's POSSIBLE for the very technical with practice and equipment. Wonder how much the equipment to do a swap like this would cost?
Think this would of been even more interesting on the early 2013 Ivy Bridge retina!
Yep, agreed. I love seeing people like Dosdude perform these upgrades.
Whenever I happen to be looking at everymac lookup, I always laugh when I see ‘it cannot be upgraded later’ 😂😂😂
Love the guyyyyy!!! He's a living legend! I love that you guys are friends. Apple Fam! 🤣
While the 17 inch mod was more interesting to me this is still interesting to see. Quad core Air sounds very cool or should I say hot since I doubt it will handle a quad core well. There was only the 2020 MacBook Air that ever had a quad core chip.
9:49 PLS DO THE QUAD CORE 13" RETINA, i would watch that vid at least 10 times, i love old Retinas omfg yes yes yessss :D
Would love to see a redo with Liquid Metal or a diamond based thermal compound on the quad.
Thank you! You have inspired me to make such an upgrade. I ordered the same i7-3615QE processor for my MacBook Pro Mid 2012. Waiting for it from China to be installed on my laptop.
Dude, just get a new Mac. That thing needs to die. Get onto Apple silicon. Stop polishing a turd with a turd
Awesome, just make sure you use a good preheater, go easy on the top heat, and you should have no issue. The chips from China seem to come reballed with leaded solder, so installation is a breeze.
@@dosdude1 advocating that people polish a turd with a turd rather than just get a newer and better machine. Good job 👏
@@emilsecker7881 Dude, it’s just for a fun upgrade... As I said before, everyone ALREADY KNOWS Apple Silicon is worlds better than this. That’s not the point, some people actually want to learn and tinker with machines, better to do with old machines that aren’t worth much than risk an expensive modern machine.
@@dosdude1 something that old isn’t even worth spending money on at all
Dosdude strikes again
You know what is missing? dosdude ASMR. It needs to happen. ^^
Ok, ok, everybody agrees Dosdude is a walking legend! I think so too.
but could you please explain a simple guy how long I can continue using these cool 2012 machines?
This is a serious question.
Still using this even watching this on my MacBook pro mid 2012 13inch it's been a year and it's working amazing with 2+4= 6gb of ram and 256SSD.
Can you do this with the 17 inch?
It's kinda surprising you don't need any extra modifications to run this CPU in those MacBooks. I thought he'd need at least modify power delivery since the TDP is a bit higher but I guess it can handle it.
Tdp is not the max power it draws.
Dosdude rules! greets from Croatia!
I want to see Quad Macbook Air!!
Dosdude1 should defiantly do cameo appearance in Hollywood movies as a tech genius . He deserves to be immortalised !
Defiantly? 🤣🤣🤣
Whenever you see titles like this on Luke's channel you just gotta' assume DosDude had to be involved
Immediately I was like ok where is DosDude
Now that was cool and cudos!!!
dosdude saved my work computer from the scrap pile, kudos!
I also have MacBook Pro mid 2012 13 inch I need to update the os still Mojave can I upgrade into later version??
This is absolutely mad
I would think the MacBook Air would not have the thermal dissipation to do well with the quad core upgrade.
I need to see a cpu swap for a Macbook 5.2 (the last classic macbook) and macbook pro 4.1 (last calssic Macbook pro).
Looking forward to the MB air swap
would a 4tb ssd be compatible with a the 2012 macbook pro? Curious cause I want to remove my optical drive on my macbook for more storage
Can @dosdude1 solve the problem with the Radeon graphics on 2011 15" and 17" models by replacing them with some newer chips?
To ask the most obvious , can this be done to the 2.5 gig i5 logic board ? Or does it have to be the i7 logic board ?
It's the same. The machine dosdude upgraded was originally a 2.5ghz i5.
Read the title and thought "Dosdude is in this video" :D
I had already seen it on dosdude channel, but won’t the 10W difference make the Mai board components die early?
I've definitely seen this done before on UA-cam, you should have gave credits to who tried this first. I was even thinking stocking up these cpus from china expecting that everyone will want to take a shot on this mod (the price went from 35-45€ to over 70€).
I installed a Q9200 (quad core) from a P8700 (dual core) into a Precision M4400 made a difference in multi core programs.
looking at my faithful old late 2012 13" retina now.... 😲
Yes, do the quad core macbook air
I'm a believer in the quad core !
That is fire
My Mid 2012 13” MacBook Pro keeps being my main laptop, it has died two times due to faulty hard drive cables, the first charger died, I’ve changed the hard drive and it keeps working like a beast
Time to upgrade that thing. Get onto Apple silicon
could you show spec of this processor?
Oo yeah baby, you know that 2012 MacBook Pro’s fast when its multi core finally matches up to a single core in my M2 Max MBP 😂
Great video as always, Luke! Ur the GOAT
Man Dosdude is pretty awesome. And that machine is so cool… would you sell it to me 😂
I love DosDude....he's so cute!
Maybe u should hit him up 😂😂😂
Only real ones remember the original video title “The worlds first QUAD CORE 13 inch unibody MacBook 4K”
DOSDUDE HOLY FRICC yes yes yessssssss :D
better performace than my 2017 13 inch no touchbar 😳
Yeah no. You should probs upgrade that MacBook Pro. It’s not getting Sonoma
WE NEED THE QUAD CORE MACBOOK AIR!
