- A fire broke out at a fire station in Huntington Park early Wednesday morning.
Crews responded to a second-alarm structure fire at Fire Station 164, at 6301 Santa Fe Avenue, around 4 a.m., according to Fred Fielding, spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Video captured by KTLA shows firefighters - some in street clothes - mopping up the mess in the aftermath of the fire; additional footage posted to the Citizen App shows crews on the roof of an adjacent building battling the blaze.

I am a fire alarm technician with over thirty years experience and I have yet to do testing at a fire station where the alarm panel hasn’t been neglected. One I did was completely down and had been for at least 6 months. When I asked if they had a fire watch the captain looked at me and said no we don’t have the time nor money to do that and yet they will red tag buildings for not having a working fire alarm

There are smoke alarms in the living areas, not in app. Bay do to exhaust from rigs

They do not put them in the actual bays as exhaust fumes would set them off.

I lived in Washington, and within about two weeks of each other, the Local PD had a patrol car stolen as an officer went inside a night club to respond to a fight, and a fire station had a small fire (due to ground power) that only damaged an electrical line and slight damage to a fire truck.
As an European, I can't understand why the station wasn't updated with fire alarms downstairs... In Europe even older stations have to be "upgraded" - it's mandatory over here...
Only in LA would their fire stations not have fire alarms. Wow, can't even make this up.
$15 dollar smoke alarm would have saved a million. Not to mention possibility of loss of life
MILLIONS. Probably like at least 5 million and if station is a write off, more like 15 million at least.
Imagine other fire stations get the call at 4 am. "Is this a prank call?!"
Nevermind the guys there, imagine youre at a different firehouse, passed out sleeping, hopefully for the night. All of a sudden you get woke up to the sound of a call, a fire with the address being the next fire house over. That would be wild. Glad noone was hurt

They did mention it being an old building - probably something faulty.

my guess is it started in a fire engine or truck.....it happened to me when I was a fireman, but we woke up and put the fire out before it spread...but, who knows until an investigation is completed.
I get it, no smoke detectors as fumes from truck engines running inside the building as they are leaving or backing into the bay.
Then use InfraRed or UV Flame Detectors.

You definitely right just look at the fire damage and smoke damage that entire station has to be torn down and built back up from scratch.
When the trucks are parked there's a lot of chargers with lithium ion batteries recharging could be possible that the batteries went up and took everything else with them

CA: you don't need guns to protect yourself because we have police, just like you rely on the fire department to protect you from a house fire while you are asleep.
Also CA: our fire departments cannot protect themselves from a fire while they are asleep.
Moral of the story: don't rely on the government to protect you when they need a good Samaritan to protect themselves.
Most likely one of the rigs started the fire , wiring issue

It's an old building, older structures aren't equipped with fire protection systems in the apparatus area.
Don’t they require older civilian buildings to be up to code ?
@rd8370 nope, that all depends on where you live some cities require it but others don't and residential homes don't require anything besides a smoke alarm on each level of the house and many fire departments are older especially volunteer departments and they're not able to be upgraded due to funding and how old the structures are , in order to modernize a fire system the electrical wiring would need to be installed in all of the walls or ceilings which costs a lot of money which is difficult for many departments to get because they're not funded by their city government much of what many fire departments get in way of gear or other necessities is donated generously by residents that live in the community or businesses that help care for the people that keep them safe.
@@josephbennett3482 you don't need to have fire protection systems installed. It says they didn't even have smoke detectors in the Bays. They could have ordered them off Amazon and put them on the ceiling themselves. 🤷♂️
@eriksand9262 fire stations are classified as Type B buildings, which mean that they are public buildings in which the general public can be inside of and go to so they're required to have wired fire protection systems in which someone can activate the alarm by pull station or the alarm would activate on it's own and send a signal to the 911 dispatch center of an alarm activation , that station technically wasn't up to code since they didn't have alarms in a location where there's vehicles filled with flammable fuel and is a place where civilians would visit during daylight hours or if the bay doors would be open the alarm could be activated by a passers-by if there isn't anyone in sight.

You would think given the importance of fire departments for the community they serve not to mention the cost of the apparatus and associated equipment that the station houses the building would be equipped with a fire sprinkler system, alarms systms that are monitored by a third party and building materials meeting a minimum of 1 half hour burn time as per several of the NFPA standards that apply to industrial, commercial and residential buildings. Really does not make sense.
Look as a trained U.S. Navy Firefighter, those guys are NEVER GOING TO LIVE THIS ONE DOWN! Their own station burned down, ouch.😣😣😣

No detector/alarms or sprinklers in the station - certainly not good stewardship of public resources.

How does the "apparatus Bay" not have smoke and fire alarms ? Aren't all buildings including homes (no matter the age) required by law to have smoke/ fire alarms ??? Something smells fishy here.

I'm surprised there aren't heat detectors in the engine bay.
Also rather curious what started it. Maybe there was a cheaper LiPo battery that failed somewhere, but typically nothing rated for heat has those batteries in it (radios, flashlights, pagers, etc.).

The rest of us are required to have smoke alarms in multiple rooms no matter how old the building. But they don't require any in the apparatus bay. Sounds like typical government policies. Required for thee but not for me.

There is a significant number of new fire trucks with digital controls and computers that are spontaneously combusting. It strikes me that more people should be concerned about that.

No. As stated above, LACoFD doesn't run those kinds of rigs. Only Los Angeles City FD runs one, Engine 82.
Strange, how that's always the first question on somebody's mind... anyone seriously interested in this matter could find out that ICEs are a lot more likely to burn.

These issues won't be any more frequent with electric trucks; these fires happen all the time with liquid fuel apparatus as it is. Firetrucks are unfortunately susceptible to fires more than other vehicles because they already have increased electronics on board for various motors, emergency lighting, etc.

I thought it kind of looked like the fire station used in the pilot episode. It was two stories with three bays like this one. The opening scene everyone is upstairs asleep, the callout tones go off everyone jumps into their turnout gear, slide down the pole, and roar off to a paint factory fire.
