    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
    The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

    It seems that most players want to reduce Ulfric to either a selfish and ruthless villain out only for his own gain, or a pure hero. I think the truth is that he's just a person who believes in himself and his cause, but also has flaws. He's a well done character and I wish that Skyrim, the game, did more with him.

    One thing I think would have been interesting in Skyrim, though: during the main quest line, during the part where you infiltrate the Thalmor embassy, you all know it, there's a bit where you come across the Thalmor dossier on Ulfric Stormcloak, and in it it is mentioned how the Thalmor allowed Ulfric to believe that the Imperial city fell due to the info he gave up.
    Imagine being able to take this information and show it to Ulfric. Maybe it changes nothing, maybe it changes everything. He'd have proof that it wasn't his fault.

      The fact that he believes it’s his fault the Imperial city was sacked and the war almost lost completely, then still has the ego to black mail a young man into combat and further break the empire is all the proof I need to know he’s not the right man to fight for. He may be loyal to Skyrim and believe his grand speeches, but deep down he’s a foolish, rash, and when it counts cowardly Jarl. Also short sighted.

    The Thalmor have a long history of making horrible mistakes.
    In the Black Marsh, they tried to make the argonians attack morrowind to destabilise the Dunmer. However, they lost all their influence in the region as the extremest An-Xileel hated all outsiders, not only the Dunmer, and that's not even considering the fact that Redoran managed to hold off the Argonians much more efficiently than the Thalmor wished.
    Hammerfell was going to be part of the Dominion as well, but the arrogant elves underestimated the redguards and they got kicked out, losing quite decisively to a small foe.
    So, is Ulfric really in such a precarious situation? Even if the Thalmor had planned for the Imperials to be distracted by such tactics, I doubt it'll do them much good and it'll possibly even backfire on them.

    I like the idea of a free Skyrim under Ulfric moving forward. I can imagine a possible alliance between the Redguards and Nords against the Thalmor, respecting the way that Hammerfell rejected the empire and fought back against the Dominion. That would make for an interesting questline in Elder Scrolls 6, where in Hammerfell you do work with a Nord ambassador to strengthen the alliance.

    • @luisrincon4672
      @luisrincon4672 Рік тому +1

      Yes i would love nothing more than that myself. However they won't have any time to even think about an alliance with anyone. The Thalmor want the Stormcloaks to rule Skyrim. They secretly helped the stormcloaks without their knowledge throughout the civil war. They want to rule all of Tamriel. The civil war will give the Thalmor a perfect opportunity to strike while they fight each other. Helping the Empire take Skyrim is just asinine, not once considered an option. Helping the Stormcloaks on the other hand is genius. They aid them in secret because they know Ulfric would never allow it and also to stay in the shadows. If the Stormcloaks take Skyrim and drive the empire back to Cyrodiil it's over for Ulfric. There would be absolutely NOTHING stopping the Aldermi Dominion from attacking the Stormcloaks who are extremely exhausted from the war and in fewer numbers. On top of that, the Stormcloaks have absolutely no allies. However the return of the dragons was unexpected and threw a massive wrench in the Thalmor's plans.

    Bethesda does seem to have been going the route (since oblivion) of a crumbling empire, which might give credence to a Stormcloak victory cannon. On the other hand, they're also seemingly building up the Thalmor and their secret/notsosecret plan to collapse the time of Mundus by destroying the towers, which would make you think that having an Imperial victory in the civil war would be cannon (as then the Thalmor have their influence there).

The speech Ulfric gives the first time you enter Windhelm is better than the military talk from Tulius, and at the end Ulfric talks about future plans like fighting the elves and rebuilding Skyrim. while Tulius dose not talk about the future. • @JeFilm94
    @JeFilm94 3 роки тому +15

    Here's my personal wish for an outcome of the war and future for Skyrim:
    The Stormcloaks successfully defeat the Imperial forces and win the civil war. Ulfric is named High King by the Moot. From here he begins rebuilding Skyrim from the aftermath of the war and grow Skyrim's military strength. Having now successfully established an independent rule, Skyrim reaches out to Hammerfell to propose an alliance between the two independent nations.
    Meanwhile the Empire is in a much different situation as Emperor Titus Mede II has been assassinated by the DB in Solitude, and an emergency government is formed by the Elder Council. Having now been reduced to an empire of only two provinces (Cyrodiil and HighRock), their future relies heavily on cooperation with the other non-Aldmeri nations. The Empire has no other option than to officially acknowledge both Hammerfell and Skyrim as independent and sovereign entities, and from there- negotiations of a new alliance emerges between the nations.
    Now that the Empire no longer need to worry about keeping control over unruly provinces, the Dominion loses direct political influence in the region. The Empire is incentivised to follow sentiment from its allies and cut ties with the Dominion and break apart from the White-Cold Concordat. Effectively ending the peace agreement, leaving the Dominion with far less political influence over the Empire and its former provinces- war erupts anew.

      I think another thing another thing often overlooked is,
      1: the redguards left the empire and fought off a weakened dominion whilst running their own country.
      2: ulfric was crossing thr border and headed into hammerfell so, in my head he was going to form a truce with the redguards and an alliance. I think it makes sense on many levels both are warrior people who have deep seated hatreds of the elves and both feel let down and failed by the empire. It may not have been why he was headed that way but I refuse to believe he was running away to escape the empire coz after escaping Helgen he just goes home and is like "come at me bro" to the empire and thalmor so if he was worried wouldn't he run again? I think he may literally have been attempting what I said

  • @HK-vq1xb
    @HK-vq1xb 4 роки тому +6

    Ulfric winning is best narratively. It parallels the recent independence of the empire from all of the other provinces with the exception of high rock. For this reason I think it would be interesting to have ES 6 take place in High Rock, with the culmination of events in the main quest coinciding with the events of the next Great War, similarly to the civil war coinciding with the main quest of the Dragonborn. The armies of each individual province should indepently have an important reason to bring their troops to High Rock to deal with whatever event is taking place there. High Rock should be recently independent at the outset of the game to create social and political tensions in the region while the Great War is currently raging across Tamriel. This would give the player several interesting options. Join the thalmor and fight for the aldmeri, join the empire to help reunite High Rock under imperial rule, or join the Bretons to assert independence. With the presence of each of the other provinces armies in the region, it would give the player a choice of ten different armies to join, each with different motives and quest lines, allowing for several replayable options. The only question that would remain is what the main quest would be. I’m most in favor of the Dwemer suddenly reappearing in the distant future as this would be an unexpected event that would upend the plans and political influences of everyone in Tamriel, and thus would have the meta shifting historical influence that is common with the main quest of each ES game. It would also potentially allow the player an eleventh option of a race to choose in character development, being able to now play as a dwemer.

      The Dunmer have their sympathizers among the Nords, and I'm sure people like Brunwulf Free-winter, who may or may not be a candidate for Jarl after Ulfric ascends.
      Ulfric isn't an evil man. He simply puts Nords first. His father embraced the Dunmer, and he himself has never expressed any real disdain for them. If the Nords rally behind the Dark Elf cause, I'm sure he would at least entertain the idea.
      Galmar would object of course, and Ulfric would be inclined to listen. But ultimately, he's not an idiot. He knows that Skyrim is a fractured shadow of its former self and has no chance of taking the Thalmor on their own. They need allies, and the Dark Elves need help after the Empire abandoned them too.
      Plus, how beautifully poetic is it to see these eras-old enemies join together against a common threat in a context that actually makes sense and isn't the "plot" of ESO?
      I don't recall there being any dialogue of Ulfric mentioning an invasion of Morrowind, and I sincerely doubt he gives a shit about warring with Cyrodiil beyond the secession.
      Ulfric isn't a warmonger. Every war he's taken part in or threatened has been for a very legitimate reason, and he has grown quite weary of it. If anything, my head-canon would be rendered null BECAUSE he refuses to go to war pointlessly.
      Yeah, left alone, I dont think Ulfric would spare a thought, and frankly I don't think he would lend much to the endeavour. But ultimately, I don't find it hard to believe Skyrim and Morrowind would end up as allies, even if tumultuously so.

    • @ohauss
      @ohauss 5 років тому

      Yeah, as put by General Sir Alan Brooke, the Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS) − the professional head of the British Army in January 1943 "I had heard of him (Patton), but I must confess that his swashbuckling personality exceeded my expectation. I did not form any high opinion of him, nor had I any reason to alter this view at any later date. A dashing, courageous, wild, and unbalanced leader, good for operations requiring thrust and push, but at a loss in any operation requiring skill and judgment."
      Patton was good at winning battles, but he had no fucking clue how to win a war and achieve a peace. He was a good commander of troops, but a piss poor large-scale strategist.
      And that's precisely why Ulfric will fail the moment the war is over. He's incompetent in pretty much everything BUT fighting - and the typical guy who, having naught but a hammer, believes everything to be a nail.

    Why I chose the Stormcloaks? Well first off the Empire tried to kill you in the beginning for no reason, and if they had succeeded in that, there would be no dragonborn and the end of the world would happen. The Empire is too weak to protect Skyrim because as it is they can barely protect their own home. At least from a gameplay perspective I think the Stormcloaks are in general stronger warriors seeing as how whenever I see them fighting I barely ever see the Empire win without me coming in, which makes them have a better chance against the thalmor when they come over. You can be a dark elf in a full set of imperial armor and the Stormcloaks will still give you a chance to join them. The new emperor is weak and cowardly and if the Dark Brotherhood questline is canon, that means he's gonna die which means the Empire doesn't even have a leader anymore.. And the dark elves in Morrowind have gone through much worse situations than Skyrim and still survived without the empire. Also as a bonus fuck you from the Empire they leave Maven Black-Briar as a jarl, and I hate that bitch.

    • @marielenapotts848

      clay stedman I'm pretty sure that FudgeMuppet's video on why the empire will die soon no matter which side you join in the civil war he mentioned that the ending of all of the joinable factions is canon in the elder scrolls timeline. This means that whether the Dragonborn chose to join or destroy the Dark Brotherhood, or not bother with them at all, Titus Mede II will still be assassinated, whether or not it was the Dragonborn or an unnamed person who fills in the role. Or whether or not the assassin who does the deed is aligned with the Dark Brotherhood or not.
      No matter what, Titus Mede II will canonically be assassinated

    The Dominions geopolitical objective seems to be to ferment conflict. They fought Hammerfell and lost despite the civil war there; the Redguards united against the common enemy. Lesson learned they sign a peace agreement and let the local divisions do the work for them. In Skyrim the country is similarly divided between pro/anti Empire, Dominion interest is only that the conflict continues to sap the strength of both nations. Since the Dominion hasn't the strength to conquer Hammerfell a united Skyrim would be beyond their abilities too.

    thank you so much for actually doing an unbias biography on Ulfric Scott. A couple things of note however to consider...The situation with the Dunmer is in reality a very old old problem . Let us not forget the history between the Nords and the Dark Elves. I believe both side are equally at fault there and at this time Ulfric truly does not have the time to deal with ancient bitterness. Mind you there are elves living in the upper end of town, High Elves even. Ulfric has not run them out. and as far as his approach to things ...he is running his campaign the only way he really knows how. based on the old Nord traditions all Nords are fed their entire lives.he never got the chance to learn diplomacy or any of these things. he thinks he is doing it the right way and it's the best way he can. is he imperfect? absolutely. flawed? highly. but the empire is over. the provinces will go independent and then eventually will have to negotiate an alliance of cooperating individual states. because we don't have The Stormcrown atop the Numidium this time around...

Ulfric follows all Nord traditions especially politically. AND you say the Empire isnt over? All empire has left at this point is Cyrodiil and High Rock with Emperor whos likely been assassinated. The Nords of the Fourth Era weren't the same Nords as those of the Third and before, they were kind-hearted. At least until Ulfric took the throne in Windhelm.
      The Nords of Skyrim allowed the Dunmer to build grand shrines to the Daedra that they worship, so the idea that a hatred stems from that is baseless. Nords follow the Imperial Cult.

    I usually play Stormcloaks (mostly because I love Ulfric's voice) but honestly, I would rather be independent. I'm a peacekeeper by nature and play Seasons Unending before choosing the Stormcloaks.
    However, with that aside, I can't side with the Imperials. Ever. I can't when there is little justification as to why my character was on the chopping block other than sheer convenience, or even more, just to torture Ulfric with watching another be put to death in front of him. I don't care if they wanted a speedy execution for Ulfric. My name was not on the list yet I was still sent to be executed only to be saved by my worst enemy.
    I have yet to find a source that states it is illegal to cross any border in the game and am more inclined to believe the 'wrong place, wrong time' situation instead of you being an actual criminal somehow without a reported name for the list. You're only assumed that due to being at Helgen. It's also pretty damning when you think about it: You weren't caught by any border guards, you were caught by Imperials who were had tunnel vision for capturing Ulfric. They most likely couldn't care less about provincial border crossings.
    I have tried playing Imperial but bailed once I interacted with Tullius the first time to join the Legion. I was not happy with his answer as to why I was nearly executed. A 'misunderstanding'. Yeah, well, that misunderstanding cost you the support of the Dragonborn. How many innocents were put on the block and didn't escape because of a 'misunderstanding'? Tells me you don't care about the citizens of Skyrim. Don't get me started on the Thalmor. I liberate anyone who is considered their prisoner.

    I usually side with the Empire during my Skyrim playthroughs, if I choose a side in the Civil War at all (about half of the time I don't pick a side). My only logic behind that choice is simple foresight. A fully united Empire has a much better chance of defeating the Thalmor than a fledgling independent Skyrim. Though I figure either nation would probably ally with Hammerfell, to that end.
    *But,* I can't deny that Ulfric Stormcloak is an absolutely fantastic potential ruler or antagonist for the player character, no matter which side you support during the Civil War quest line. The depth of his personal tragedy and personality is like something out of Shakespeare. And even if I play a Legion officer storming his palace, I could never keep myself from cringing when he died.

      @@americanrebelking8337 Yeah, you're probably right. And it isn't as if the Empire is weak without Skyrim, either. Compared to Cyrodiil and High Rock it isn't very well populated. What bothers me was that I couldn't hand Ulfric his own dossier that you find in the Thalmor embassy. It could have ended the Civil War and given the Aldmeri Dominion something to really be nervous about.

    Siding with the empire always appears to me like a bad choice. The consequence of the Empire victory are: Talmor keeps killing and torturing peoples under the guise of Talos worship until the next rebellion arise or the province is completely broken. Consequences of Stormcloak victory is possible xenophobia. I don't really know if Ulfric would make a good or a bad High King, but it seems like the only way to possibly stop the Talmor machinations. My prediction for future TES, Skyrim will gain independence but it will not be specified if it was Ulfric doing or by another mean.

    Though I'm vehemently against Ulfric and the Stormcloaks, I do think that going forward in the series they should be the canon winners of the civil war. If only because it would make it much more interesting for a much more fractured empire, especially after Mede is assassinated. There's little to no hope for the empire, so how are we going to get rid of the Thalmor and stop their conquest? I feel like it would be much more rewarding to do so with this ending rather than the civil war being squashed and the empire basically going back to normal with just a little hiccup.

  • @sercastamere9853

    The racial aspect of the Stormcloaks was always ridiculous to me, and very clearly a videogame-y addition only. Realistically, Morrowind, and specifically Blacklight, Ravenrock, Ald' Silgrad, and New Gnisis etc. would be the Stormcloaks' MAIN TRADE PARTNERS, and would obviously necessitate a decent relationship. Trade with Solitude would likely be nixed/difficult, so Dawnstar and the above-mentioned would be their only options.
    Morrowind is in no position to take sides (as that lady in Windhelm states), and wouldn't bias themselves toward either side, trading with both on their northern and southern borders.

    Ulfric seems to heavily imply like general Tulius that Skyrim's independence war is only the first step and his true enemy is the Thalmor. So the Thalmor's plan of telling him that they'd threaten him probably wouldn't work at all like they plan. Because that would make him lose his guilt towards the empire and focus his hatred against the Thalmor for their past actions even more. He's also referred to as an uncooperative asset.
    Secondly, his true followers likely wouldn't betray him as he points out his hatred for war and its horrors and Galmar says that his words give voice to how they all feel. Cracking under torture wouldn't be a death sentence for his reputation as people who suffer in war likely know that that's inevitable.
    In conclusion an allied but unified Skyrim is probably better than a bitter forced ally under imperial rule for both Skyrim and the Empire. Look at how unstable the Reach is and how often Markarth has to deal with the forsworn, imagine in the middle of the next war if Skyirm's Nords rebelled against the empire again. The imperials winning doesn't stop the hatred by Ulfric's supporters of how they were treated and how they felt the empire sacrificed their rights and religious freedoms to save the emperor. It just means the person they hoisted on the throne is dead and they are too weak for a rebellion at the moment.
    PS: Obviously the Thalmor want the war to go on forever as well because its heavily implied the Thalmor weren't as strong as the Empire believed them to be at the end of the war.
    PSS: Despite what Elisif and the court wizard says about the supposed admiration of King Torygg for Ulfric. It's pointed out by Balgruff and others that Ulfric probably challenged and killed him as he likely believed that to be the only way to prove his point of how far Skyrim has fallen and how serious the issue has become. Torygg being an inexperienced leader and not making a stand during the previous meetings of the moot is a major cause for Ulfric's desperate actions.
