Unlike fiberglass, rock wool is water-resistant. The foam board will melt behind the fiberglass. The furring strips are R1 per inch, transferring heat. You will definitely have moisture gain in the fiberglass due to the freezing point location in the insulation on the roof. That metal roof will collect moisture. Instead of an expensive metal roof, use white Roofguard 700 on the shingle roof to eliminate summertime heat gain. That greatly reduces your cost and if applied every 3 years, you will probably never need to replace your roof. Inside, I'd have the 1" gap at the roof, 1" double-sided aluminum Celetex, R-19 Rockwool, 1" double-sided aluminum Celotex, 1" gap, and another 1" Celotex. That should get you to r-35 with a much better result.
hi free range people ,i have a cuestión ,in what State u are ,the electric Bill is Lowe now Sincé i see u post this vídeo 2 years ago ,i live in Phoenix Arizona and over here the weather is hot , thanks for watching
Thanks Cassandra. Things are on hold for a while because we recently welcomed our second child into the world. I'll probably post some more updates in the fall or early winter.
How did you attach the 1" boards? I'm thinking of doing something similar, but my attic has trusses and a flatter pitch, which makes it difficult to do this work. I'm trying to come up with the easiest way of attaching the 1" boards.
Did you put an air gap between the foil and the roof? That is required to make it work and would also be the proper channel to vent the eves up to the ridge vent.
y dont u spray cellulose behind the foam board u have now that its up? great vid, keep em comin....luv to spray celulose in my attic but the thin joyces freigten me, luv2 a video on how safely do that with a hopper from lowes!
For the reflecting of radiant energy from the sun using foil backed insulation to be effective , I thought that it has to be a few inches (at a minimum) from the underside of the roof.
last part of video u said ,new metal roof?so that wont interfere with the rafters structure, theyll just rip the roof shingles off and replace with aluminum/copper roof? u didn't explain technically y u hav2 do the switch, r u concerned about ice dams buildup now that the attic is warmer?
I did the thing rigid foam in my cathedral ceiling maybe 10 years ago. The 2" board I used is R13.1. Looking around today it's the same. Where did you get R13.6 board?
Very nice work, I need to do something similar to my attic, where did you get the 2" rigid insulation with foils on one side and the cost per sheet? Thanks
I got mine from Lowes but any big box store should have something similar. If they don't, they should be able to order it for you. I believe the price was around $24 per sheet normally but I bought in bulk and got a 5% discount. Good luck on your project
Hi Eric,. The large air gap I built between the roof and the insulation combined with the vents at the top and bottom will keep any condensation from forming. Normal air gaps are between .5" - .75" and mine is a full 1" so I shouldn't ever have a problem. Thanks for watching.
Free Range People I recently saw your reply to me from a couple of years ago. Thanks you. How did things work out with regards to condensation ? Did it worked out as expected?
@@FreeRangePeople I dunno, watching the closed cell insulation being blown in was pretty satisfying, lol. How has your project worked out in the meantime?
Question? What did people do before they super insulated their attics? And why do these new homes have these large strange looking roofs? To keep the roofers in business? Because that's all they seem good for plus driving up the cost of a house! Who lives in the attic? They are hard to stand up in for an adult! Kids like them if finished. It's a place to get away from their parents. And cities charge you more taxes if the attic is finished! Why even have an attic? For the squirrels and bugs? Depending how you insulate your attic determines how long your shingles last! And why shingles! A metal roof is better. And cities have regulations about having a metal roof! Well one that looks like a metal roof! They have metal roofs that don't look like metal! A metal roof is a lot less heavy than shingles! Face it a home is a money pit to keep the home stores in business. Homes are not made to last for one's lifetime! You have to fix something! For me renting is how to go! You get a neighbor from hell you can move. And I always seem to get a neighbor from hell. And hey! Homes are haunted! I've seen and even felt a ghost! People are more strange when dead!
Cannot find input or help in months. Insulating/Foaming holes-cracks in Attic. 1940 Ranch. Where the Front Porch was connected to House is a HUGE cutout Access Hole in the Attic Wall facing street, made to get to the Porch ceiling to install a Fan way back when. When you sit on the Porch, if you turn around is where the Alum. Siding is on the front of the house. Cutout hole in Attic measures 18 feet wide by 6 Foot high(exposing the Ceiling of add-on Porch), then the remaining wall UNcut has the other Gable vent(back of house has Gable vent also). No animal or pest problems ever. Is this the BEST ventilation in the world to keep the Attic Cool or Warm in winter??? I wanted to seal it up. I have never seen anything like this. Chimney chase only has basement Furnace/ and Water heater vents( no fireplace). There's even in Attic ANOTHER Chase that has no purpose(no exposed pipes etcetc UN sealed in Attic). It's like when they built the TWO chase's to basement, they said, " NO you idiot Chimney goes OVER there. Any help thanks......WISH I could provide Pictures, you guys wouldn't believe it when it was constructed. ALL your Videos I have learned intently and taken notes and acted upon to-do my jobs. 👍👌👍
Looks great so far!!
Thank you!
I like the project.
Cost and effort are key to this type of project. I'm wondering if you costed out spray foam insulation for this project?

I would like to see an update on the results the pros and cons of doing all this ... I'm thinking of doing something similar...
Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/ram64igFPr4/v-deo.html
Nice transformation you've done...
When are we going to see more updates?
Thanks Cassandra. Things are on hold for a while because we recently welcomed our second child into the world. I'll probably post some more updates in the fall or early winter.

I just picked up at my local Lowes.

How far up did you have the foam board go? Did it go all the way to the peak?
No, it stopped about 18 inches short of the peak
How do you prevent condensation in the winter?
The roof will be cold outside, and the attic with the chimney pipe will be warm.
Hi Eric,. The large air gap I built between the roof and the insulation combined with the vents at the top and bottom will keep any condensation from forming. Normal air gaps are between .5" - .75" and mine is a full 1" so I shouldn't ever have a problem. Thanks for watching.
@Mircea soffit to ridge
Free Range People I recently saw your reply to me from a couple of years ago. Thanks you.
How did things work out with regards to condensation ? Did it worked out as expected?
Allen Loser I am accustomed to not using a vapor barrier due to the area of the country where I build (warm and arid most of the year).
Did you consider closed cell spray foam instead?
he said he wanted low budget !!!
Like @davetileguy said, I was going for cheap AND what fun would it be to shoot a video about blown in insulation?
@@FreeRangePeople I dunno, watching the closed cell insulation being blown in was pretty satisfying, lol. How has your project worked out in the meantime?
Omg, whats a scaleton hand
What part of the country are you? Thanks.
New England
