  • We have basically finished insulating our entire attic. In this video I show the roof framing, recessed lights, 3 layers of roof insulation, end wall framing and end wall insulation.

I might have missed it, but aren’t you concerned with mold forming in the batts between the foam if it isn’t perfectly air tight?

The work you have done here is amazing! I would like to know if you treated the band joist? This is the area below the floor where it meets the slopes (eaves).

Thank you! No, I did not apply any treatments to any part of the house. I prefer to just focus on making sure things are water tight, have good ventilation and are built using high quality materials. Thanks for watching!

How much did it improve the comfort of the room?

Did you make a 5th part yet? Was there any venting anywhere??

Should have taped all seams with foil tape and continued the foil air flow pocket and sealed it clear to the ridge board but well done though.

Thanks for sharing these videos. A few questions: 1. How is the size of the room and how tall is the ceiling that you built? 2) How much do you estimate you spent in insulation for walls and ceiling? Thanks

+David Slabaugh The room is roughly 16' wide (to the knee walls) and 38' long. I bought the insulation in bulk to save some $ but I believe the insulation ended up costing about $1700. That doesn't include strapping, tape, screws etc...

+Free Range People Thank you very much. Have a similar sized bonus room and want to insulate it well. This is very helpful!

+David Slabaugh By far much cheaper than the alternative methods using a Dr. Energy Saver like product like Silverglo I'm assuming. Thanks for the ideas!

Could you do the same rigid foam sandwich on the ceiling also?

+Michael Mulville For my bonus room I ended getting a company to do spray foam and got an awesome price! I got about 7" of open cell spray foam on the ceiling b/c the builder originally furred out the ceiling joists against the roof. The room is so quiet too. Thanks for awesome video once again.

+Michael Mulville Yes, you definitely could do that sandwich technique on the ceiling but with my project I didn't need to. The reason for the sandwich was that is didn't take up as much space as normal batt insulation to get a high R value. In my ceiling, I had a bunch of extra dead space so I just used two layers of batt insulation to get my R value and save some money.

Is there an air gap that you left for ventilation? Kind of curious isn't wood rot a concern being so sealed up...
