I have a history of diverticulitis which has been under control for years. After listening to this video I decided to try popcorn again. OMG... I am in agony... it took a few days before I felt the throbbing which has become full flared and very painful. I know how to take care of this... I go on just liquids for about three days and give my colon a rest. Just a warning to others who may want to try popcorn again. Not worth the pain. Thanks for all your valuable info that I have applied to my life. Feeling better. Losing weight slowly. Keep up the good work.

Well very well thanks Kim Little lies to him diverticuli carving of the swell becomes diverticulitis, and that I can call you all a pain bleeding from the rectum will your store. My Dad had surgery for diverticulitis in the 1970's. (He was not overweight nor did he smoke.) I remember the family sitting, watching a tv show & eating the kernels off of the popcorn so that he could have a tiny bowl of just the white puff of the corn. He was so grateful! My grandmother would laboriously peel the seeds off of strawberries for him & he would blissfully have that bit of fruit with some cream. His doctor was ahead of the curve and reversed that directive in the '90s. I still remember Dad's joy in eating fresh, whole strawberries and a big bowl of popcorn for the first time in 20 years! Medical science marches on. Thanks for jogging this sweet little memory.

The only time I got diverticulosis was when we bought a 25 pound bag of raw peanuts and I was really working my way through them until I had to go to the emergency room. I was given an antibiotic and was pain-free by the time I got home so I don’t know what it was. We gave the remaining peanuts away.

Hi frank, I read a while ago ( sorry, I can't remember where!) that the Spurs are formed due to much acid forming in the blood. Main causes were coke consumption. The blood needs to remain at a constant acid/alkaline level, and surge like drinking coke alters this to acid. To compensate the body sucks calcium from the bones to neutralise the acid. Once this is done the blood then needs to dump any excess calcium and so forms Spurs as a result. Sticking to foods more inclined for your blood group can help avoid such ailments and basically avoid coke and high acid forming foods if your body is not a happy bunny on them..good luck.

After the two weeks of zero fiber, patients were told to try to keep their fiber as low as possible. Patients were their own control. Follow up at 1 month and 6 months showed constipation dropped to zero. Perhaps the advice to consume more fiber is the wrong advice.

I didn’t suffer any less following what was told to me, but decided to go back to same healthy foods I enjoyed. I then concentrated on total my gut health, & feel I’ve had way less issues, although I still have the occasional niggle.

Dr Berry I know that this is an old video with new information. A month ago I ended up in the ER with lower gut pain...thinking it was a UTI or bladder infection./ 65 yr old woman and the doc asked if anyone ever told me I had divertuculosis. I said no. Well turns out I had a diverticulitis attack. I have fallen off the Keto diet a year ago and am trying to return by growing an organic garden with blueberries, strawberries black and raspberries. My diet HAD returned to eating processed foods(some : Ice cream, tortillas, some processed meat: bologna, salami❤ and esp. bacon❤ ) I want to trust,... and I know that I already have some food allergies including wheat, grains and shellfish. Should I eliminate the corn (and definitely wheat) based on this info? I do love nuts and seeds. And...is carnivore an option for people like me? The pain seemed worse that childbirth UGH! BTW thank you for these videos, I did read the study.

Everytime my mother ate strawberries she had a flare up. Every time!!!! She never smoked, was never overweight, she did eat processed meats. Processed meats may have caused it, but she never had a flare up after eating it, only the strawberries, nuts and seeds. We don't all respond the same way. We all need to pay attention to our own bodies, I have reactions that others don't have. I believe it's an error to tell everyone with diverticulitis to just eat the nuts and seeds without testing it for themselves.

    • @AlexVonCrank
      @AlexVonCrank 9 місяців тому +1

It's probably not the seeds that cause flare ups. For instance strawberries might cause a FODMAP reaction that coincides with the fact that the food has seeds. Correlation is not causation, right? So the strawberries might have caused her reaction but not the seeds.

The last few times I was in the hospital, I mentioned that, and the doctor said "We're getting away from that idea. We're finding that not to be true anymore..." As you said. Then, on the same day of being discharged, a dietician told me the lie. I can say that I do have a coincidental flare up after eating popcorn. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do recreational drugs or otherwise, except as needed by a doctor, or OTC aspirin, Tylenol, Naproxen.
I can also say that I am overweight, and when I eat popcorn or cashews, I do have a flareup and definitely avoid them while I am having a flareup.

@@anoodono1841 As they study and research more information comes to light. I was told that the husks from the popcorn kernels get stuck in the pouches of the colon, much like they get stuck in your teeth and irritate the gums, even cutting them. Then you can't get rid of them and they start to get infected. A flare up. So then you have to have antibiotics to kill the infection until it breaks down enough to get out of there. Same way with nut fragments that don't break down. They just get caught.
I don't think they're safe, nor unsafe, though they're not supposed to be in the human diet anyway. It's just that the forbidden foods are always more tasty and the fact that they're forbidden makes them all that much more desirable. Oy vey...

Research that was done by placing inflated balloons in the colon and measuring the pressure created by segmentation indicated that diverticular form because of a lack of sufficient bulk in the colon during segmentation. The powerful contractions working against insufficient bulk , (fiber), create a pressure so high that it causes the colonic walls to blow out. In other words eating those seeds and nuts which contain a good bit of fiber actually help prevent diverticulitis , not cause diverticulitis.

It is interesting that a pouch outside of the intestines would not be passing stool the same as the rest of the intestine. It's also interesting that if I completely avoid fruit and vegetables I do not have any intestinal problems. Another interesting point is fruit juice causes absolute pain in my guts and gas. It's also interesting that the pouches could have food parts mainly from fructose and fructans that will cause fermentation.

@KenDBerryMD - I've gone ahead and read the 2008 study from JAMA. One point of confusion for me is that the study states at the beginning of the study none of the patients had diverticulitis. It then continues to detail the inverse of the 800ish patients that developed diverticulitis, the ones that ate less seeds and nuts were a higher percentage of the 800ish patients.
Question, for someone that already has diverticulitis, what are the concerns (if any) of eating nuts and seeds? From reading the study, in appears to only focus on individuals that don't already have diverticulitis and when they do eat nuts and seeds does that cause the disease. However, it doesn't appear to address the question of someone already having the pouches due to diverticulitis and if eating nuts and seeds they can get caught in the pouches.
I appreciate the help, if you see this comment.

I find stress to be one of the worst culprits. If you'll pay my medical bills, I'll try it, but it costs too much to get sick anymore.... My mother was in the beginning of her 3rd week on keto. She weighed herself and was disheartened to see that she hadn’t lost any weight yet, then a few days later she began having some abdominal discomfort and cramping. She said she had eaten nuts and that the diet gave her a “diverticulitis attack” so she decided to stop altogether. It is unfortunate that she didn’t do some research before making this decision. I believe she was experiencing symptoms of electrolyte imbalance and the need for more fat and green leafy fiber in her diet. I attempted to explain this to her but she didn’t seem to believe me. Sometimes it’s hard to teach a loved one a new concept or idea when they have been so used to the same information for so long. It’s hard when we have the best intentions but we have to kind of tone down our excitement and enthusiasm in order for our loved ones to take us seriously when we are going up against the old medical establishment that me and my dad were trained in as RNs. I graduated in 2005, had one nutrition class and learned about the food pyramid and also that nuts, seeds and popcorn cause diverticulitis. My father who graduated in 1991, was taught even more dated information. These are the nurses out there in the hospitals and doctors offices taking care of us and counseling us on diet in 2019. This is who my mom is sitting next to at home as she complains of stomach pain after eating a portion of nuts and seeds. My dad, the late 80’s/early 90’s trained nurse is telling her “it’s diverticulitis. Stop this crazy diet! Look what it’s doing to you. Eat some pasta already!” Oy! Am I a little disappointed my mother won’t be getting the great benefits of keto and taking this journey alongside me (I’m in week 7, feel great, down 15lbs!), yes, but it is her decision and I will always love and support her.

I am 65 and chubby but I eat a low-carb diet with protein, vegetables, low-carb fruits, eggs, etc., and very little junk food or processed food. I am wondering if this isn't truly a digestive issue caused by perhaps low stomach acid. After an overnight in the hospital and a round of antibiotics, I decided to add Kimchi, Sauerkaut, and pickles (fermented foods) in hopes that they would aid in overall digestion. I must say, the fermented foods do keep things moving!

I had eaten some popcorn, and went to lay down after (nap) and I woke up an hour later with pain on my left lower side of abdomen, I did not know what to think, the pain got worse by evening, but was not sure what was going on, I had nausea, then fever, the next morning, so went to ER, they diagnosed diverticulitis 😲. It feels like it came out of nowhere. I have not had that much pain since acute pancreatitis. They gave me antibiotics and sent me home, but did say if pain got worse to come back, I was told to avoid seeds, grains, nuts, and no popcorn. I do have the three main causes overweight (around abdomen, smoker, and bouts of constipation). I am happy If I can eat popcorn again, will avoid microwave popcorn though, as not sure what they use to make it taste like butter.
